First introduced in 1993, Captain Benjamin Sisko (Avery Brooks) was a very different type of character than Trekkies had previously seen. Unlike the affable Captain Kirk (William Shatner) or the professorial Captain Picard (Patrick Stewart), Sisko was a bitter commanding officer. He had lost his wife in a Borg attack, and approached the world with an element of resentment, unwilling to suffer nonsense and appreciative of straight talk. Sisko could be warm, especially with his teenage son Jake (Cirroc Lofton), but more generally wanted to get down to brass tacks. More than Kirk and Picard, Sisko was emotional and passionate and possessed of a temper; when the trickster god Q (John De Lanice) first appeared on "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine," Sisko punched him in the face.
Sisko's character matched his assignment. On "DS9," he was placed in charge of a Cardassian space station that had been abandoned after a prolonged...

Jerome Coopersmith, who wrote more than 30 installments of the classic 1960s-70s police drama Hawaii Five-o and received a Tony Award nomination for his book for the 1965 Harold Prince-directed Sherlock Holmes musical Baker Street, died Friday in Rochester, NY. He was 97.
His family announced his death.
After earning a Purple Heart at the Battle of the Bulge in 1945, Coopersmith also wrote, among other stage works, the first act of the 1966 three-part Mike Nichols-directed musical The Apple Tree, starring Barbara Harris and Alan Alda. The musical was revived for Broadway in 2006 by the Roundabout Theatre Company in a production that starred Kristin Chenoweth, Brian D’Arcy James and Marc Kudisch.

Jerome Coopersmith, who received a Tony nomination for writing a 1965 Sherlock Holmes musical and penned more than two dozen episodes of the original Hawaii Five-o during the series’ first nine seasons, has died. He was 97.
Coopersmith died peacefully Friday in Rochester, New York, his family announced.
After earning a Purple Heart for his service during World War II, Coopersmith broke into television writing for quiz shows and historical programs. In the early 1950s, he and Horton Foote worked on the kids-focused Gabby Hayes Show and Johnny Jupiter, and the future Pulitzer Prize and Oscar winner behind To Kill a Mockingbird would become his mentor.
Coopersmith wrote 30 regular installments and two feature-length episodes of CBS’ Hawaii Five-o from 1968-76. Among those was the notable 1975 eighth-season installment Retire in Sunny Hawaii … Forever, which featured Helen Hayes in an Emmy-nominated guest-starring stint as the aunt of her real-life son, James MacArthur.

Photo: 'Tony Hawk: Until the Wheels Fall Off' Tony Hawk - The Life of an Eternally Hungry Athlete I watch documentaries every now and again, but I basically never cross paths with one of the more niche subspecies of the genre: the sports doc. I’m not an athletic person, and I’m not particularly invested in the lives of even the best athletes — never mind those who have fallen from grace, be it through drug enhancements or more serious deeds. Yet I find it hard to look away from the stoic majesty of Tony Hawk, who for someone of my generation is arguably more recognizable as a brand — no, an idea — than as a person. When you think of skateboarding, all the pain and effort that goes into it, you think of Tony Hawk, even if you know absolutely nothing about the man. Related article: Oscar-nominated -...

This review was first published on March 12, after the film’s premiere at the 2022 SXSW festival.
“Tony Hawk: Until the Wheels Fall Off” opens with a montage of failures. Hawk, now in his 50s and easily the most famous skateboarder of all time, is trying to land a 900. To pull the trick off, he has to complete two and a half aerial spins, essentially hurtling himself and his skateboard through several mid-air somersaults before landing neatly back on a wooden ramp.
Hawk already landed this trick, over two decades ago at the 1999 X Games. He is reportedly the first to ever successfully do so. It was a feat akin to Tonya Harding’s triple axel or Nadia Comaneci’s perfect 10. Yet here Hawk is, relentlessly determined to do it again.

Tony Hawk has never been one to back down from a challenge or stunt, and the skateboard legend is back in the headlines this week with the launch of a new blood-infused skateboard (no, really) with the canned water company, Liquid Death.
The limited-edition collaboration launches today exclusively at LiquidDeath.com, and features a macabre rendition of the brand’s “It’s the Thirst Executioner” character set against a blood-red background. The color was created by taking a vial of Hawk’s actual blood and mixing it with red paint.

Philip “Hawk” Hawkins doesn’t just dream about killing vampires – He eats, sleeps, drinks and freakin’ breaths it. After getting kicked out the Army for staking a fellow soldier with a blunt two by four, Hawk almost dies of boredom working as a night security guard in his hometown of Santa Muerte, California.
Just when it looks like all Hawk’s options in life have expired, filthy blood-sucking vampires appear and, of course, nobody believes him. With his back up against the wall and hordes of murderous vampires closing in, Hawk enlists the help of the one person who kind of believes him – Revson “Rev” McCabe, a dimwitted, vegan-pacifist groundskeeper. Together they join forces to save the whole entire freakin’ world.

The horror hit factory creeps on to streaming platform Amazon with two studies in psychological unsettlement
Blumhouse, the production outfit founded by Jason Blum, struck it big with unquiet souls terrorising American domesticity in Paranormal Activity – and not much has changed 11 years later, as the company launches Welcome to the Blumhouse, a diffusion line of eight thrillers in collaboration with Amazon Studios. Here, the unquiet souls are the domestic inhabitants themselves – at least that’s the case in these first two films, which slot more into the psychological thriller category than the pure horror the studio is known for.
Veena Sud (showrunner of the US remake of The Killing) offers an accomplished helicopter-parenting noir in The Lie (★★★★☆) – though what beleaguered divorcees Mireille Enos and Peter Sarsgaard engage in when trying to shield their daughter (Joey King) after she murders a schoolmate is probably better described as Black Hawk Down parenting.

Burt Reynolds would’ve celebrated his 84th birthday on February 11, 2020. The Oscar-nominated actor remained active up until his death in 2018, starring in dozens of movies and TV shows. But how many of his titles remain classics? In honor of his birthday, let’s take a look back at 12 of his greatest films, ranked worst to best.
In the 1970s, Reynolds was arguably the biggest movie star in the world. He had made his name through television, appearing as a regular for 50 episodes on the hit series “Gunsmoke,” then headlining his own series, “Hawk” and “Dan August.” But then Reynolds got his big break in feature films, co-starring in the John Boorman classic “Deliverance” (1972).
Though Reynolds was soon starring in such box-office hits as “The Longest Yard” and “Smokey and the Bandit,” he never abandoned television, utilizing such talk shows as “The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson” (where he was one...

Another day, another Netflix original movie. The streaming giant just premiered Tyler Perry’s “A Fall From Grace” over the weekend, which IndieWire senior film critic Eric Kohn called “a trashy Hitchcock riff.” It’s one of about half-a-dozen Netflix original movies premiering in January, and merely a taste of what’s to come throughout 2020.
The studio has now released the first trailer for “Spenser Confidential,” an upcoming action comedy starring Mark Wahlberg and Winston Duke, directed by Peter Berg from a script by Sean O’Keefe. It is based on the best-selling novel “Wonderland” by Ace Atkins, and on the Spenser character created by Robert B. Parker. The late Robert Ulrich played the first on-screen version of the character in the “Spenser: For Hire” television series, broadcast on ABC from 1985 until 1988.

Mark Wahlberg actioner Spenser Confidential will premiere on Netflix, arriving as a new adaptation of Spenser: For Hire.
Spenser Confidential is the next action thriller feature fielded by star Mark Wahlberg under the direction of Peter Berg, following their last effort, 2018’s Mile 22. However, this offering will manifest not at theaters, but on Netflix!
Interestingly, the film is an adaptation of the Spenser novel series of author Robert B. Parker, which were more famously represented on television with ABC’s popular 1985-1988 series, Spenser: For Hire, which was briefly spun-off in 1989 with the short-lived A Man Called Hawk. This film, however, bears a script by Brian Helgeland and Sean O'Keefe adapting the Wonderland series by Ace Atkins, which continued the Spenser mythos after Parker’s 2010 death.

As I wrote in January, with the release this Friday of the long awaited 12 Years A Slave, I thought it would be worth it to remind ourselves of the first filmed version of the book that Steve McQueen’s upcoming drama is based on. That’s right, 12 Years A Slave is actually the second film version of Solomon Northrup’s 1953 autobiographical book; the first being the 1984 TV movie, Solomon Northup's Odyssey, starring Avery Brooks (Spencer for Hire, A Man Called Hawk, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine) in the role of Northrup. It was the last film to be directed by the legendary renaissance man (film director/photographer/composer, and more) Gordon Parks, who passed away in...

For those you youngsters out there, you who don't know what I'm talking about, Hawk was a spin-off series from the ABC Network popular detective TV show Spencer For Hire. Hawk, who was played by Avery Brooks, was Spencer's sort of friend and occasional partner. Yet, thankfully, he was his own man, and never took risks or sacrficed his own safety for...
