While innovations in technology have made it easier than ever to make a movie, it has become harder than ever to receive significant financial backing. Doubly hard when one is a director of an underrepresented background.
Black Americans have been a part of the film industry since the beginning, over a century ago, but one could argue that there were not any Black film directors given enough of a platform to become a household name until the 1990s. Though a diverse set of directors were able to breakthrough from that time through the aughts, the shift in focus toward solely blockbuster filmmaking has left many Black filmmakers out to dry.
In recent years, quite a few Black directors have seen a greater level of support and reverence, from “Get Out” director Jordan Peele to “Black Panther” director Ryan Coogler, “Moonlight” director Barry Jenkins to “Selma” director Ava DuVernay. And every...

Texas Congressman Joaquin Castro has nominated 27 Latino-driven films for inclusion in the National Film Registry. Among the suggestions are films that brought Oscar nominations to Latino actors and artists, including Salma Hayek, as Mexican artist Frida Kahlo in “Frida” (2002); Catalina Sandino Moreno, who portrayed a desperate undocumented pregnant immigrant in “Maria Full of Grace” (2004) and Demián Bichir, who played an undocumented worker in Los Angeles in “A Better Life” (2011). All were nominated for lead acting Oscars.
Other notable titles nominated by the congressman are Peter Sollett’s coming-of-age indie “Raising Victor Vargas,” Alfonso Arau’s romantic drama “Like Water for Chocolate (1992) and Darnell Martin’s “I Like It Like That” (1994), a story of a Puerto Rican family in the Bronx.

On March 8, 1991, Mario Van Peebles’ feature directorial debut “New Jack City” premiered at the Mann Village Theatre in Westwood. On Saturday, a little more than 30 years later, Van Peebles walked the red carpet outside the very same cinema — now renamed the Regency Village Theatre — for a special screening of his classic crime thriller, hosted by the American Cinematheque.
Van Peebles was joined for the special event by “New Jack City” star Vanessa Estelle Williams, plus his children — Mandela and Makaylo, who joined their dad onstage to record his introduction to the movie, as well as Marley and Maya.
As Van Peebles reflected on the full-circle moment, he called out one of the gangster movie’s most famous (and Bible-borrowed) lines, “Am I my brother’s keeper?” and the massive crowd yelled back, “Yes I am.” The call and response is a reference to the iconic scene where (spoiler alert...

Tuesday morning saw the announcement of the second-ever batch of TV nominees for the Film Independent Spirit Awards, and while the accolades represent a truly unique set of honorees, the mechanism for deciding those nominees remains painfully flawed.
But first, the nominations.
Film Independent didn’t appear to have any favorites with regard to TV this year, spreading the love to series including HBO Max’s “It’s a Sin,” FX’s “Reservation Dogs,” Starz’s “Blindspotting,” Peacock’s “We Are Lady Parts” and “Rutherford Falls,” and Amazon Prime Video’s “The Underground Railroad” and “Them: Covenant” all of which received two nominations. Also nabbing nominations were HBO’s “Black and Missing,” “The Lady and the Dale,” “Nuclear Family,” and “White Lotus,” FX’s “The Choe Show,” Netflix’s “Squid Game,” and PBS’ “Philly D.A.”

After playwright Jeremy O. Harris’ hit show Slave Play had its final performance at the Golden Theatre on January 19th, 2020, he was applauded by some for changing the way audiences engaged with Broadway theater — but also found many detractors. Harris had insisted on being a co-producer of the show, made sure to offer more affordable tickets ($39 rather than the average $124), and hosted a “Black Out” performance, which reserved all 804 seats for black students, performers, journalists, and artists. It seemed a shoe-in for Tony accolades, then the coronavirus pandemic shuttered Broadway...

When the British Invasion arrived in America in the mid-1960s, the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, and other bands introduced songs like “Little Red Rooster” and “Road Runner” to American teenagers who assumed they were originals. In fact, those bands’ catalogs were full of American R&b and blues classics from years in the past, originally written and recorded by black musicians such as Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, Bo Diddley, and others. Singers like John Lennon and Mick Jagger took more interest in this music than many listeners had at the time,...

During an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! Tuesday, the actor discussed the decision to bring the “I Like It” rapper onto the upcoming action movie, revealing that it was his daughter, Pauline, who initially suggested the idea.
“You’ve added some interesting members to the team, who have you added?” Kimmel asked the F9 star.
“John Cena, such a blessing to work with and is so incredible. Obviously, we have Helen Mirren. Obviously, Charlize [Theron],” Diesel began.

The Estonian director’s sophomore feature revolves around an Estonian intelligence officer who has to track down a mysterious Soviet double agent. Margus Paju is now shooting his second feature, a spy thriller entitled O2. The project follows Paju’s debut film, The Secret Society of Souptown (2015), which became the highest-grossing Estonian family flick at the time and picked up important awards at Stockholm, Zurich, Schlingel, Yerevan and many other international festivals. Paju, an alumnus of Tallinn’s Baltic Film and Media School, directed several shorts, such as My Condolences (2014), Black Out (2009) and Audition (2006), before working on his first feature. The story of O2, penned by Tiit Aleksejev, Eriikka Etholén-Paju and Tom Abrams, kicks off on 23 August 1939, when Europe started fearing an imminent war, and the Soviet Union and Hitler’s Germany shook the world to its core by signing a non-aggression pact. At that very moment, an...
Publishing has historically been full of horror stories about artists or songwriters signing away their copyrights for eternity. But Kobalt, an independent outlet, promotes a different model: more flexible deals in which writers retain ownership of the songs they have written, keep more income from their songs than they might elsewhere, and enjoy a high level of transparency, so that writers always know how much money they are bringing in.

Six black directors who found modest success with early feature films in the 1990s have spoken out about how they felt their careers were stymied by institutional prejudice in Hollywood that offered more opportunities for their white peers — and made more allowances for missteps.
“It’s like they set us up to fail — all they wanted was to be able to pat themselves on the back like they did something,” filmmaker Darnell Martin told the The New York Times in a story published Wednesday with five other African American directors.
Though Martin’s 1994 debut “I Like It Like That” was produced by a major studio, Columbia Pictures, and won the New York Film Critics Circle prize for Best First Feature, she has made only one theatrically released film since, 2008’s “Cadillac Records” — though she has found consistent work on TV projects.

If Ryan Follese looks or sounds familiar, it’s because he was in a band that were, at one point, one of the biggest in the country. Hot Chelle Rae had a brief run of invincibility from 2011 to 2012, where their singles “Tonight Tonight” and “I Like It Like That” were everywhere and went platinum. Even though that record had a couple more bops on it, no single caught on quite like its predecessors, and Hot Chelle Rae hasn’t had an official release since. However, that doesn’t mean music from the members stops – Ryan Follese has since launched a solo career and just debuted the music video for his new single, “Float Your Boat.”
“Float Your Boat” comes off Follese’s debut Ep, which has a bit of a different sound than he was used to playing with his previous band. His Ep goes in the direction of your standard country pop,...

The first ever Writers Lab, a program targeting female screenwriters over 40, took place at Wiawaka on Lake George, New York from September 18-20, 2015.
The group of mentors included Caroline Kaplan ("Boyhood," "Time Out of Mind," "Personal Velocity"), Kirsten Smith ("Legally Blonde," "Ten Things I Hate About You"), Jessica Bendinger ("Bring It On," "Aquamarine"), Mary Jane Skalski ("Win Win," "The Station Agent"),Gina Prince-Bythewood ("Secret Life of Bees," "Beyond the Lights"),Lydia Dean-Pilcher ("The Lunchbox," The Reluctant Fundamentalist"), Meg LeFauve ("Inside Out," "The Dangerous Lives of Altar Boys"), and Darnell Martin (“Cadillac Records” and “I Like It Like That”).
Launched by New York Women in Film and Television (Nywift) and Iris, a collective of women filmmakers dedicated to championing the female voice in narrative film, was funded in part by Academy Award-winning actress Meryl Streep, and with the collaboration of the Writers Guild of America East.
Motivated by its screenwriting members who were frustrated with the paucity of development opportunities, Iris founders Elizabeth Kaiden, Kyle Ann Stoke, and Nitza Wilson approached Nywift to support a screenwriting Lab exclusively for this demographic and The Writers Lab came into being.
I spoke with Iris cofounder Elizabeth Kaiden to follow up about the first Writers Lab.
Kouguell: How many screenplays were submitted for consideration?
Kaiden: There were approximately 3,500 screenplays submitted. The selected participants were Sarah Bird ("Daughter of a Daughter of a Queen), Vanessa Carmichael ("The American"). Tracy Charlton ("Raised Up"), Kellen Hertz ("Ashburn"), Anna Hozian ("Anchor Baby"), Lyralen Kaye ("St John the Divine in Iowa"), Jan Kimbrough ("The Glastonbury Cow Party"), Billie Jo Mason ("The Cargo"), Peres Owino ("Basketweaver"), Gretchen Somerfeld ("Face Value"), Janet Stilson ("Jaguar Trail"), and Kim Turner ("It Goes Like This").
Kouguell: What were some highlights from the three-day Lab?
Kaiden: Highlights included the chemistry, warmth and enthusiasm of the group, the bucolic setting in which serious and thoughtful individual meetings between writers and mentors took place, the outstanding, locally sourced, group meals presented by Wiawaka chef Meg, and evening conversations around a bonfire. Oh, and the weather was fabulous.
Kouguell: What is the next step for these writers selected for the Lab?
Kaiden: Writers are all revising their work and communicating with each other. They will use the feedback, resources, references, and friendships they took away from the Lab to further develop their scripts and their opportunities.
Kouguell: In addition to the one-on-one meetings, what other events took place?
Kaiden: There were three panel discussions in which the mentors addressed specific craft issues and general industry insight, informal conversations, group meals, as well as small, directed group conversations led by Nywift Board President Alexis Alexanian to address the challenges writers face in navigating the film world.
Kouguell: What do you feel were some of the most positive outcomes from the weekend in Lake George?
Kaiden: The most exciting outcome of this venture, for me, is uncovering and bringing to public attention the field of women screenwriters, particularly its enormous breadth and depth. The most positive outcomes of the weekend Lab, for me, include the sense of empowerment I believe the Lab gave the writers to continue their work and develop their projects, and the supportive community of writers we all discovered, which can only further our goals of ensuring that more of their stories will reach audiences.
Kouguell: Will the Writers Lab take place again next year?
Kaiden: Yes.
Kouguell: Anything else you’d like to add?
Kaiden: We were excited and delighted by the energy and enthusiasm at the Lab. It felt like an important event. It Was an important event. We discussed and debated issues of theme, tone, craft, structure, character, as well as production, representation, and target markets. The mentors were unbelievably focused, supportive and encouraging. Serious work was done. The writers left feeling, I think, that their voices had been heard, and that they should all continue to tell their stories. I think you will be hearing more from these writers and about these projects. And, although that would have been enough, everyone had a blast.
Award-winning screenwriter and filmmaker, Susan Kouguell teaches screenwriting at Purchase College Suny, and presents international seminars on screenwriting and film. Author of Savvy Characters Sell Screenplays! and The Savvy Screenwriter, she is chairperson of Su-City Pictures East, LLC, a consulting company founded in 1990 where she works with writers, filmmakers, and executives worldwide. www.su-city-pictures.com, http://su-city-pictures.com/wpblog...

Cuba Gooding Jr. received a profile boost recently thanks to all the attention directed at his upcoming World War II film Red Tails including a Veterans Day appearance at a New York Jets game. Gooding Jr. joined Terrence Howard and Nate Parker in director Anthony Hemingway’s drama about the Pentagon in 1944 putting into action the first African American military aviators, the Tuskegee Airmen. Gooding Jr. maintained the career momentum by joining Crew Nine, a Hallmark Hall of Fame TV movie about a counselor at a youth detention center who trains troubled teens how to battle forest fires and other natural disasters. Well I've been thinking things through over the last few months, Cinema Sharks.net being the big one. As you may have noticed there hasn't been a whole lot of activity for the last few months, and that all comes down to a combination of laziness and school. Time isn't exactly throwing itself at me,and so I had to put the site on hiatus.
Now after whatever lengthy process you'd like to credit it to we've arrived at what now is Cinema Sharks, the micro blog. Yeah, it may be basic but to be honest its the content that matters. Not the appearance. Just be glad I'm not opting for the Blogger Template Maker rendition of a blog. Its ass, not going to lie! Cinema Sharks is now what you call a micro blog. What does it all mean Basil(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QRt2_OLY3Ho)!?! The posts will be shorter,...

HawthoRNe, TNT’s medical drama, just wrapped up its 3rd season and for Michael Vartan, that means he’s looking for his next job during his hiatus. “I would say you never stop looking for work as an actor,” he told me.
I talked to Michael on a conference call about what he does on his time off, auditioning and if he’s ‘method’ in his work.

Yesterday I had the absolute privilege of meeting Josie Gibson, when I appeared as a sofa surfer on Channel 5′s Vanessa Show.
The shows topics were about food intolerances and playing games in relationships, a subject which was quite raw for reality show star and Big Brother winner, who has just split from her fellow Big Brother contestant, John James Parton.
When asked if she thought that games in relationships worked, Josie responded by saying that in her opinion it is always best to be yourself as you should always give your heart to someone who accepts you for exactly who you are.
As always, the staff at the studio and of course Vanessa Feltz and partner and co presenter, Ben Ofoedu, were wonderful company for the afternoon, and having Josie there too seemed to double the enjoyment as she displayed her addictive ability to light up the room with her lovely,...

It’s hard to imagine anyone not being utterly enthralled by the timeless charms and dazzling animation prowess of the new Dreamworks animated film Megamind. Though it comes at a time when this whole superhero genre is beginning to feel a bit overcrowded, the script is funny, the vocalizations are spot-on and the visuals so spectacular that Megamind turns out to be one of the best family films of the year.
Mixing antic, ingenious humor with action-adventure stuff, Megamind aims to do for villains what Pixar’s The Incredibles did for superheroes. “I was born to be a super-villain” the Smurfish Megamind (voiced by Will Farrel) opens as he describes his origins rocketing from an exploding planet Superman-style along with another baby who lands in a warm loving home while Megamind lands in a prison yard to be raised by cons. Viggo Mortensen as Sigmund Freud. Put me on the couch.
Keira Knightley as Sabina and Michael Fassbender as Carl Jung.
Yes, It's Viggo (my vote for the most consistently brilliant 50something male actor working), Keira, and the wonderful Michael Fassbender in David Cronenberg's Psychiatrists In Love. er... The Dangerous Method. I once saw a play about these three characters (not the Christopher Hampton play "Talking Cure" that this is based on) and I remember nothing about it other than that it was great subject matter but I was too drowsy to focus.

Steve James’ Hoop Dreams, Darnell Martin’s first feature, I Like it Like That, experimental filmmaker Eric Saks, and a report on non-linear editing, which was new at the time — those were all in our Fall, 1994 edition. But our big story was our cover — Hal Hartley’s interview of Jean-Luc Godard. Godard was in town for an exhibition of his work, including his new “self-portrait,” Jlg By Jlg. Hartley met with Godard at 9:00Am in his suite at the Essex Hotel, and d.p. and photographer Gabor Szitanyi snapped the smoky shot of Godard we ran. Nothing from this issue is online, but we rekeyed it so I could quote from it here. Peter Bowen’s intro: In the world of independent film, the element of dependence –...

A few months ago I wrote about Jasmine Guy directing a stage version of Ntozake Shange's famous 1976 play For Girls Who Have Committed Suicide When the Rainbow Is Enuf in Atlanta this summer.
Now Lionsgate has announced a feature film version of the play to be adapted, directed and produced by Tyler Perry.

Yes, that Tyler Perry — the man who made $125 million last year by bringing us movies like Madea Goes to Jail, the latest in his popular franchise of wacky-grandma movies he has written, produced, and starred in.
Because there's nothing funnier than movies starring a black man in a dress — especially to all the talented black actresses who can't get good roles if their names aren't Halle Berry, Queen Latifah, Jennifer Hudson, or Beyoncé.

A great ensemble cast and a terrific, blues-oriented '50s soundtrack make "Cadillac Records" a treat despite a script that crams in almost as many musical bio-pic clichés as the spoof "Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story."
Booze, drugs and various forms of corruption and racism pop up like clockwork in the loosely factual script by director Darnell Martin, who returns to theatrical features after years of working mostly in TV following her much-praised debut, "I Like It Like That" (1994).
