David Seidler, the Oscar-winning screenwriter of “The King’s Speech,” died Saturday while on a fly-fishing expedition in New Zealand. He was 86.
“David was in the place he loved most in the world — New Zealand — doing what gave him the greatest peace which was fly-fishing,” his longtime manager Jeff Aghassi said in a statement. “If given the chance, it is exactly as he would have scripted it.”
Seidler won the Academy Award for best original screenplay for 2010’s “The King’s Speech,” directed by Tom Hooper and starring Colin Firth, Geoffrey Rush and Helena Bonham Carter. The historical drama also went on to win best picture, best director and best actor.
The stage version of “The King’s Speech” has been translated to more than a half-dozen languages and has been performed on four continents. After being staged at the Wyndham’s Theatre on London’s West End in 2012, the play was supposed to head to Broadway,...

“The Golden Bachelor,” the latest series in ABC‘s “Bachelor” franchise, finally has a premiere date. The season that will revolve around Gerry Turner finding a second shot at love will premiere Sept. 28 at 8 p.m. Et.
This marks a departure from the network’s previously announced schedule, which originally had “The Golden Bachelor” premiering on Mondays after “Dancing with the Stars.” Now, in this revised lineup, the new spinoff will be followed by “Bachelor in Paradise,” which is set to premiere at 9 p.m. Et.
A premiere date for “Dancing with the Stars” is expected to be shared soon, an ABC insider familiar with the matter told TheWrap.

Turning Disney theme park attractions is a relatively new-ish concept, but the movies based on Disney attractions vary wildly in quality.
The story goes that Dick Cook, who at the time was running the Disney film studio with Nina Jacobson, had originally come up with the idea to “mine the theme parks for movie ideas” (as James B. Stewart put it in “Disney War”). They had made “The Country Bears” and were working on projects based on classic Disney attractions Pirates of the Caribbean and The Haunted Mansion. At the time, Pirates was envisioned as a direct-to-video cheapie, more along the lines of “Tower of Terror,” which debuted as an inexpensive TV on “The Wonderful World of Disney.”
But during a meeting about whether Disney should invest in “Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World,” an expensive Peter Weir movie starring Russell Crowe (they declined), the idea was...

On October 26, 1997, Tower of Terror aired as ABC’s The Wonderful World of Disney feature presentation, initiating a trend that would go on to shift the paradigm that had long existed between Disney’s immersive theme park attractions and their successful movie slate. The line between rides and movies was blurring and soon the path that carried the silver screen to the realm of reality would no longer be one-way.
Twenty six years later, the studio is on the cusp of their twelfth ride adaptation and their second big screen attempt at a blockbuster Haunted Mansion movie. Far removed from the made-for-tv Steve Guttenberg starring spook fest that served as a gateway horror flick to so many young and impressionable minds, these multimedia ticket drivers have left behind low budget simplicity in lieu of multi-million dollar CGI driven set pieces and A-list casts. Still, with its on-ride filming sites, colorful...

Presidential hopeful Ron DeSantis once again called out Disney over Memorial Day weekend, and, come Tuesday morning, the hosts of “Morning Joe” were cracking up at the Florida governor’s assumption that invoking his feud with the company would help him in a state like Iowa.
During an interview with “Fox and Friends”, DeSantis argued that Iowans should vote for him over twice-impeached-once-indicted former president Trump, because Trump has “taken the side of Disney” and “I think a multi-billion-dollar company that sexualizes children is not consistent with the values of Florida, or the values of a place like Iowa.”
After playing that clip on Tuesday morning, the “Morning Joe” hosts and panelists were stunned before anything else.

ABC’s 2023-2024 fall primetime schedule leans heavily on unscripted series, which makes sense given the current writers strike. ABC’s fall lineup will include the return of Dancing with the Stars after a season on Disney+, along with a brand new addition to The Bachelor franchise, The Golden Bachelor.
The unscripted fall schedule also includes new seasons of Bachelor in Paradise, Shark Tank, Judge Steve Harvey, and America’s Funniest Home Videos. Celebrity Jeopardy!, Celebrity Wheel of Fortune, Press Your Luck, The 100,000 Pyramid, What Would You Do?, and reruns of Abbott Elementary complete the schedule.
The network’s roster of scripted shows, including 9-1-1, Abbott Elementary, The Conners, The Good Doctor, Grey’s Anatomy, Not Dead Yet, The Rookie, Station 19, and Will Trent, are sitting out the fall season.

With no sign of the Hollywood Writers Strike concluding, ABC has responded with a strike-proof schedule.
The closest thing to scripted we're getting is Abbott Elementary reruns.
Yes, this is by far the most shocking schedule for the fall in a long time.
Dancing With the Stars returns to its Mondays at 8 p.m. home in the fall, paired with -- wait for it -- The Golden Bachelor.
That's right, folks. The long-gestating aged-up version of The Bachelor has landed a series order and will replace The Good Doctor.
If the network is already thinking of replacing fall shows with reality, then there's a good chance we'll be getting fewer episodes of the shows when they eventually bow at midseason.
Tuesdays will feature Celebrity Jeopardy! and Bachelor in Paradise.
On Wednesdays, Abbott Elementary encores will air between Judge Steve Harvey and What Would You Do?
Thursdays will consist of Celebrity Wheel of Fortune,...

ABC is taking a realistic approach to its fall schedule given the current writers strike, leaning into unscripted titles such as the return of Dancing with the Stars and a new Bachelor spinoff.
The network has unveiled its schedule ahead of its Upfront presentation that has no original scripted titles, instead saving them for a hopeful midseason bow.
Other unscripted series on in the fall include Celebrity Jeopardy, Bachelor in Paradise keeps its fall spot, having previously been a summer favorite, Judge Steve Harvey, ABC News’ What Would You Do, Celebrity Wheel of Fortune, Press Your Luck, The $100,000 Pyramid, Shark Tank and America’s Funniest Home Videos.

ABC is leaning all the way into its unscripted roster with a fall schedule that, amid uncertainty about production during the writers strike, features no new scripted shows.
The schedule is the most strike-proof of the three announced by broadcast networks during the upfronts. CBS presented a mostly business-as-usual lineup, and NBC showed a slate with a mix of unscripted shows and already filmed scripted series, but also some shows that can’t move ahead until the strike ends. (Fox, as it did last year, is holding off on announcing a fall lineup.)
With a fairly deep bench of unscripted competitions and game shows, ABC opted to go for original programming that it knows will air for 18 of its 22 primetime hours a week. The only exceptions are a one-hour block of Abbott Elementary reruns on Wednesday nights and a Wonderful World of Disney movie night on Sundays.

ABC is relying on spin-offs from “The Bachelor” franchise and a stacked unscripted slate to fill up its fall schedule amid the ongoing Hollywood writers’ strike.
The network set its programming for the fall season, headlined by the premiere of new spin-off series “The Golden Bachelor” — featuring an older suitor looking for a second chance at love with contemporary contestants — along with the anticipated broadcast return of “Dancing With the Stars” to the network’s Monday night programming.
The network notably declined to set a timeline for the return of its renewed scripted series — including network fan-favorites “Grey’s Anatomy,” “The Conners” and the newly acquired “9-1-1” — as the ongoing WGA strike impacts productions industrywide.
Reruns of “Abbott Elementary” airing back-to-back at 9 p.m. Et/Pt Wednesdays are the only scripted show on the fall schedule.

The writers strike is hitting ABC right in the schedule. The network’s fall plan, announced on Tuesday as part of Disney’s upfronts presentation, includes a full hour of reruns of the hit sitcom “Abbott Elementary.”
The “Abbott” repeats are the only scripted series currently on the primetime schedule for the 2023-24 TV season. Instead, early on (at least), we’ll get more “Judge Steve Harvey,” “Shark Tank,” and game shows “The $100,000 Pyramid,” “Celebrity Jeopardy!,” “Celebrity Wheel of Fortune,” and “Press Your Luck.” As previously announced, “Dancing with the Stars” is moving back over to broadcast from Disney+, and the long-running hidden camera show “What Would You Do?” is also making a comeback, taking the 10 p.m. slot behind those “Abbott” reruns on Wednesday night.

In 1996, “The Wonderful World of Disney” premiered the made-for-tv movie “Ruby Bridges,” a true-life story about the 6-year-old girl who helped desegregate a Louisiana elementary school in 1960. Critics lauded the film for its exploration of racism, and it went on to become a prominent part of school curriculums on American segregation.
Now the film has come under attack, with a Florida school considering a ban after a parent complained. The backlash against “Ruby Bridges” doesn’t surprise its creators, who exclusively spoke to TheWrap about the difficult process of getting the movie made in the first place and their thoughts on the attempt to suppress it today. Their story highlights how much is at stake as politicians seek to reshape the teaching of history, and how authors and filmmakers are getting caught in the middle.

Rolly Crump, a legendary Disney animator and Imagineer, whose designs helped define the early days of Disneyland, has died at the age of 93.
Rolly joined Walt Disney Studios in 1952, working on a number of the period’s animated features in marginal positions, including serving as an in-between artist on “Peter Pan” and as an assistant animator on “Lady and the Tramp,” “Sleeping Beauty” and “One Hundred and One Dalmatians.”
In 1959, he was recruited by Walt to join what was then known as Wed Enterprises, later Walt Disney Imagineering. Sheryl Lee Ralph may have won the Emmy for Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy, but the victory has her feeling nothing but drama. After her emotional acceptance speech, during which she sang “Endangered Species” by Dianne Reeves, the actress — who took home the statue for her portrayal of Barbara Howard on Abbott Elementary — opened up a few veins when she talked to the media backstage at the 74th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards. Ralph, an original cast member of Dreamgirls, says she’s been dreaming about being in Hollywood since she was a child. “I’m a little five-year-old girl who watched TV on Sunday Night when Tinkerbell came up and went around the [magic castle] putting stars around everywhere [on The Wonderful World of Disney],” she shared with reporters. “I remember saying, ‘I’m going to Hollywood, I’m going to be an actress, and I’m going to drive a Mustang!

On September 8, 2022, Robert Zemeckis' live-action adaptation of the Walt Disney animated classic "Pinocchio" comes to Disney+. It is yet another entry in the House of Mouse's ongoing attempt to remake their classic animated films, repackaging them with a new veneer. Yes, it is easy to decry the increased commodification of art, the lack of originality from a studio once known for innovation, and crassly utilizing the work of talented artists in service of keeping people subscribed to a streaming service. However, we know it will at least be better than the last time Disney took the classic "Pinocchio" story to a live-action arena.
On May 7, 2000, as part of "The Wonderful World of Disney," ABC aired "Geppetto," an original movie musical that took the story of "Pinocchio" and told it from the perspective of the puppet boy's creator/father, starring one of the company's biggest stars at the time in the titular role: Drew Carey.

ABC is bringing fans a lovely night this week, with a reunion of “Rogers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella” coming on Tuesday. But if you miss it live, don’t worry. It’s definitely possible to watch it again elsewhere.
Back in 1997, “Rogers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella” came as part of “The Wonderful World of Disney.” In it, pop star Brandy starred as Cinderella, with Whitney Houston as her fairy godmother, marking the first Black Cinderella and Fairy Godmother ever. For a long time, it was, well, impossible, to watch it anywhere, as it wasn’t streaming. But, in February of last year, Disney rectified that. Now, in honor of the 25th anniversary of the movie, “Cinderella: The Reunion, A Special Edition of 20/20” will air on ABC on Tuesday night.

Richard Linklater’s “Apollo 10 1/2: A Space Age Childhood” is so nostalgic, personal and picture-perfect in imagining Houston in 1969 that it feels like it must be an autobiography of the Texan director. But Linklater explains that, like all his films that feel effortlessly conversational and natural, it’s all carefully constructed to bring you into that fantasy.
“You’re so pulled into the specifics that seem so personal that you buy the fantastic element that makes it seem real,” Linklater told TheWrap. “There’s still tricks you can do as a storyteller to lull the audience and pull them into a headspace. I kind of do that with a long take in actors: oh it must be real, it’s all so real. It’s not. It’s all written and rehearsed. Everything is a magic trick.”
“Apollo 10 1/2,” which premieres at SXSW, is one of his best tricks in years.

Over on CBS, The Equalizer had 5.6 million total viewers and a 0.4 rating in the demo.
The numbers were way down from recent results, but the series aired an hour later than usual.

Mark Elliott, who before becoming the voice of numerous Disney promos and trailers already had used his vocal skills to prepare audiences for Smokey and the Bandit, The Goodbye Girl and, through a radio campaign, Star Wars, died Saturday in Los Angeles following two heart attacks and a battle with lung cancer. He was 81.
“Mark was a true gentleMAN,” wrote friend and fellow voiceover artist Joe Cipriano in a Facebook tribute. “Getting to share all of our scenes in Lake Bell’s In a World was icing on the cake.” Elliott and Cipriano both appeared in Bell’s 2013 film about movie trailer voice-over artists.
Elliott’s career with Disney began with a 1977 trailer for the studio’s re-release of 1950’s Cinderella. His association with Disney would continue into the early years of the 21st century, with credits ranging from trailers to his narration for the anthology series The Magical World of Disney.
