From Martha Thomases’s column of August 4: Last week Heather Antos, an editor at Marvel, went out with a bunch of her colleagues for milkshakes at a nearby Ben & Jerry’s and posted a selfie on Twitter. She said “It’s the Marvel milkshake crew! #FabulousFlo.” The hashtag refers to Flo Steinberg, who had just died.
So, you know, a Friday after a long week, Heather and a group of her pals went out to remember a woman who was their friend and mentor. They didn’t go to a bar. They went for ice cream. They posted a photo on Twitter because that’s what the kids do these days. I don’t know what could be more wholesome.
Naturally, there was an upset. To some, this photo represented everything that was wrong with Marvel today. Women and people of color in editorial offices apparently is a menacing concept to them,...

If only we could go back to the days when mid-life crises happened at fifty-years old and at best meant buying an expensive car (at worst asking for divorce to marry younger). Now this existential breakdown occurs much earlier — let’s say thirty-years old. This is what happens when millennials are born of an era with more time to think about their futures. Rather than needing to buckle down and secure a career straight out of college, your drive for the “best fit” leads to multiple wrong turns and changes of heart until adulthood can’t help but slap you in the face via financial burden, familial responsibility, and waning energy. Even so, I never anticipated this infamous rite of passage would eventually include homicidal tendencies. Welcome to Trump’s America.
Or I should say welcome to Kasra Farahani‘s metaphor for Trump’s America entitled Tilt. I think that...

Burbank, CA, March 29, 2016 – The classic beloved animated tale The Iron Giant returns to home screens when The Iron Giant: Signature Edition is released for the first time on Blu-ray on September 6. Also available on September 6 will be an Ultimate Collectors Edition. The 1999 film directed by Brad Bird (The Incredibles, Ratatouille, Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, Tomorrowland) has been fully remastered and enhanced with two all-new scenes.
When The Iron Giant arrived in theaters, it was hailed as an “instant classic” (Joe Morgenstern, The Wall Street Journal). “Imagine E.T.as a towering metal man, that’s the appeal of this enchanting animated feature” (Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times). And the world soon learned another “giant” had arrived as well: filmmaker Brad Bird, who made his stunning directorial debut with this film and has gone on to win two Oscars®, as well as worldwide acclaim for his work on both animated and live-action features.

The Cold War spy drama Bridge Of Spies is Steven Spielberg’s best film in years. This Oscar-bait film, based on the real events around the American U-2 pilot was shot down and captured over Soviet Russian airspace, features a script co-written by Joel and Ethan Coen, a cast headed by Tom Hanks and Mark Rylance, the renowned British actor some audiences might know from the BBC’s bloody historical drama series “Wolf Hall” that played on PBS, and photography by the Oscar-winning cinematographer Janusz Kaminski, whose past films include “Schindler’s List,” “Saving Private Ryan” and “The Diving Bell and the Butterfly.”
All that talent comes together in the perfect blend to create a highly entertaining film. The film is set in the late ’50s-early ’60s Cold War, the period between the Commie-hunting hysteria of the McCarthy era and the Cuba Missile Crisis. Bridge Of Spies dramatizes two interconnected spy cases,...

Earlier today, HBO Signature began a marathon of the remastered, high-definition version of "The Wire." As previously discussed, this isn't the optimal way to watch the show, which was filmed with a 4:3 aspect ratio image in mind throughout its run, but David Simon and company did what they could to not compromise the look too much (and, on occasion, found that certain scenes looked better in widescreen). If you happen to have some time off at the moment — say, due to a ubiquitous holiday break — and are watching the marathon, you might want to keep my reviews of each episode handy, whether you're a first-time viewer who's been waiting all along to see the show in high-def, a former viewer curious to see how the new versions look, or simply a fan using this as an excuse to watch "The Wire" again for the umpteenth time. Because I wrote these reviews across two sites,...

Well, this is energizing. Katniss and company come under heavy fire in the latest clip from "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1," which debuted exclusively via the film's official Facebook page on Monday. Yes, it's all-out war this time, and yes, Jennifer Lawrence looks spectacular running from aerial bombers. Duck and cover, everybody. Duck and cover, women and humanity, because Chris Brown is back with another music video, and guess what: he's still a virulent misogynist. Why no, he hasn't evolved as a human being, are you surprised? Of course you're not - and below are five reasons why "Loyal" will make you dislike him even more than you already do (unless of course you're a die-hard Chris Brown fan, in which case you're probably going to call me a cunt or something). 1. He's still referring to women as hoes and bitches Hey, remember that time Chris Brown beat up Rihanna and then learned nothing? Yes, four years later he's still spitting choruses like "These hoes ain't loyal" and ogling scantily-clad women in music videos. Are you happy, people who continue to buy Chris Brown albums? 2. This hat On the list of hats that should never be worn by any man ever, the...

You already know by now that we here in Los Angeles tend to overreact when it comes to environmental happenings. Temperature drops below 70 degrees? Snowmageddon. It rains for longer than three hours straight? Tsunami. Earthquake that registers 4.4? Duck and cover! To be fair, it's definitely better to take precautions during an earthquake, but the reaction from the Ktla team when the quake hit their live broadcast on Monday morning keeps making us laugh, even after the fifth viewing. The last line in Pandora’s Promise, Robert Stone’s new documentary about the environmental advantages of nuclear power, comes from Michael Shellenberger, co-head of the Breakthrough Institute. “I have a sense that this is a beautiful thing, the beginning of a movement,” he says. Provoking a new environmental movement in favor of nuclear power is a tall order, but a recent screening of Pandora’s Promise suggests that it might play a part, for some intriguing reasons.
Stone’s film premiered at Sundance to positive reviews (Variety, Slate) and is scheduled for theatrical release this summer. It makes a convincing case for nuclear power as a carbon-free source of energy to reduce the harm of climate change in a world in which population is rising and the demand for electricity is soaring as the developing world develops. (For the record, I...

It’s difficult to read a statement like “Happy Earth Day” and not read it as “Happy Earth” Day. Which feels rather trite, as the Earth herself does not seem happy at all. In fact, recent years have proven her to be sort of a bitch, stomping around passive aggressively in response to hundreds of years of humanity using her resources, under-appreciating her majesty and killing off their fellow man so that they can do more of the resource using. She’s not happy, so why should we be happy? Nihilism aside, it is Earth Day after all and we’re not one to turn away from a good party. However, it’s important that while you’re out there celebrating by buying organic, recycling beer bottles and picking up trash and used condoms down by the boardwalk — the boardwalk — that we allow our weekly Scenes We Love feature to remind you of Earth’s fragile state...

Dirty Sexy Things comes to E4 this summer with a line up of eight beautiful models ready to bare all for an eight-week project led by noted fashion photographer, Perou.
He sets out to create a series of stunning photographs which will challenge his own abilities as well as pushing our models to the extreme.
By following what goes on in front of and behind the camera lens, this brand new concept-doc gets under the skin of modelling and reveals what life is like as a living beauty commodity. Is it one big glamorous party or a battle to stay on top?
In the first episode Perou holds an open casting. He meets the models putting themselves on the front line of fashion and selects eight who would never normally work together based on their individual look and character:

"Brave" heroine Princess Merida might be royalty, but she's no shrinking violet. And now we have the photographic evidence to prove it.
Pixar has released its first official still from the film, which will be released next summer, and it features the fiery Scottish redhead aiming her bow and arrow right at the camera. Duck and cover! Merida's interest in archery is discouraged, of course, and after a rebellious tussle with the 'rents, some unknown horribleness descends upon her daddy's kingdom.
We're hoping that means it's up to her to save the day and not some dorky prince dude with a butt chin.
Merida is a brand-new Disney leading lady, and there's been some considerable backstage drama leading up to her debut. "Brave" was originally titled "Bear and the Bow" and was written by Brenda Chapman, who was initially tapped to direct. Although she co-directed "The Prince of Egypt" and...

Is the release of author David Moody's Autumn: Purification too much to bear? Then today is your luck day. Moody has just released a novella, titled "Duck and Cover," from the Autumn universe. This is a 10,000 word read available at Last of the Living for free!
In this novella, Councillor Ray Cox attempts to deal with a developing tragedy in the town of Taychester. One councillor versus the hordes of undead will clearly leave only one winner. More details on "Duck and Cover" are below, along with a link to said pages.
The outline for the novella is here:
"Councillor Ray Cox never wanted this level of responsibility. He went into local politics for the social status, the financial benefits and the personal perks, never to actually try and help anyone.
Things have suddenly changed.
The population of Taychester has been wiped out, and Ray's the only council member left alive.

"Dead Money," the first Dlc pack from Bethesda Softworks for "Fallout: New Vegas," hit Xbox 360 in late December and the rest of gaming's digital download services in February. We haven't heard a peep from Bethesda yet on the next Dlc pack, though there were strong hints of what is to come buried in "Dead Money." Now there are a few (admittedly tiny) screenshots for a pack called "Honest Hearts," pulled from an accidentally posted trailer on YouTube.
The largest of the three screens is an action shot, with the player character smacking what appears to be a scantily clad woman with some kind of primitive mace.
That really doesn't sound good, does it? Presumably she attacked first.
The other two tiny images offer up a title screen and an expansive red rock vista. The images all come from a poster at Duck and Cover (via Kotaku). They're so small that...

When Edgar Bronfman Jr gained ownership of Universal Studios he got into some odd marketing campaign practices. One of which is this rare, employee orientation video, that enlightened people about how things were going to change under new management.
Created in 1995 by Matt Stone and Trey Parker and commissioned by comedic filmmaker David Zucker, Your Studio and You was to be played at a party Seagram threw for its employees acquired as a result of its Universal Studios take-over. It parodies the style of 1950s educational films such as Duck and Cover, while poking fun at Universal and its talent. Edgar Bronfman Jr didn’t like it, so they scrapped it but the film is notable in that it was Stone and Parker’s first Hollywood gig. The film is also notable for its use of a number of celebrity actors, musicians, writers, producers, and directors in the Universal family,...

Walk like an Angel
Simon remarks that he is far from an angel, The seems to imply fallen angels. As mentioned previously, this is interesting.
From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fallen_angel The origin of the term lies in the Hebrew word for "giant". The Hebrew word translated as "giants" here is nephilim, a plural, which itself derives from the root word Naphal, which means to fall.[improper synthesis?] The apocryphal Book of Enoch explains that a group of rebellious angels "left their first estate" (heaven, or the sky) and came down (fell) to Earth to marry human women and have children with them. Jude makes mention of these angels in the New Testament:

Airing immediately after the NCIS season premiere, NCIS: Los Angeles offered its usual change of pace from its parent series - much faster-paced, action-packed and more explosive.
We've enjoyed the show since the beginning and have never once come away disappointed, but it never quite compares to the original. It just isn't as character-based or compelling.
That said, it can still be a hell of a lot of fun.
Duck And Cover: The 198th near-death experience for Sam and G.
Even the opening sequence of "Human Traffic," which turned out to be Callen's dream, was exhilarating. This show will get your pulse pounding with scenes that aren't even real!
Between that chase scene, the car bomb explosion and the revelation that Det. Mary Deeks is missing, we knew we were in for a thrill ride from the onset, and were not let down.
While Deeks going missing evoked memories...

Bethesda might have slipped the beans on a new Mmo they’re working on during a preliminary injunction hearing with Interplay. Apparently they’ve been working on a “secret” Mmo for quite some time and are trying to keep it hush hush. As King C from Dac leaks,
The big trade secret?: Bethesda has “tens and tens of millions of dollars” and “close to a hundred people”working on a “secret” “World Of Warcraft” type Mmo and they don’t want their competitors knowing about it. They’ve been working on it pretty heavily since 2007 after assigning the team in late 2006. According to testimony given by Bethesda, the development timetable for an Mmo is 4 years, so that would mean they would be releasing this game next year.
The real question is what game is the Mmo based on? From the court transcripts we know it’s not a Fallout...

A-bomb drill, stinking rose get their due
WASHINGTON -- Although this year's additions to the National Film Registry help make up for some overlooked entertainment icons, such choices don't make up the bulk of the selections. Films ranging from a Cold War PR campaign to a documentary about a misunderstood herb are among the picks made this year to bring the list to 400. Duck and Cover (1951) might be the most famous film the government ever made, as millions of schoolchildren learned the untested maneuver with the help of an animated civil defense employee named Bert the Turtle. The latter urged children: "Remember what to do, friends. Now tell me out loud. What are you supposed to do when you see the flash?" "It's a public process," said Gregory Lukow, who runs the film preservation program for the Library of Congress. "It was the second-biggest vote-getter from the public this year."...
