The Academy Awards shortlist for Best Original Song contains 70 different tunes, which a pedant might say isn’t very short at all. Frontrunners have emerged, like “Remember Me” from the “Coco” soundtrack and Sufjan Stevens’ two contributions to “Call Me by Your Name,” but there’s a variety that may not be reflected when the five nominees are announced January 23. Until then, avail yourself of this playlist.

Films with more than one submission include “Beauty and the Beast,” “Call Me By Your Name,” “Cars 3,” “Elizabeth Blue” and “Pulimurugan.” It’s worth noting that “The Greatest Showman,” a musical featuring original songs from last year’s winners Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, only submitted one song, “This Is Me.”

The holiday season is nearly upon us, and anyone with a yen to perform should seriously consider asking Santa for a fraction of Ringo Starr‘s musicianship, stamina and stage presence. The 77-year-old rock icon commanded the stage at Manhattan’s opulent Beacon Theater Wednesday night, spoiling a sold-out crowd of New Yorkers with over two hours of peace, love and music.
He was flanked by the longest incarnation of his ever-evolving All-Starr Band, featuring luminaries like power-pop wizard Todd Rundgren, Toto guitar great Steve Lukather, Richard Page of Mr. Mister, and Gregg Rolie, who recently reunited with his former colleagues in Santana.

While October and November tends to be the time the big Triple A games start to bite at our wallets and steal all our cash, that doesn’t mean that Early Access on Steam doesn’t hold a few decent finds. One of these is Airheart: Tales of Broken Wings. A fishing and combat battle game that may be frustrating, but is also a hell of a lot of fun.
Airheart is a dieselpunk action game that puts you into the role of Amelia, a young woman with big dreams. Flying her plane through the skies doing battle against space pirates, she makes money from catching fish and salvaging parts from the wreckage of defeated opponents.
With its top-down view, there is an old school feel to Airheart, and the combat system does tend to back this up too. With the game also being a rougelike, expect a fairly frustrating...

With his feature directorial debut, My Dead Boyfriend, Anthony Edwards is enjoying life behind the camera -- something he appreciated long before becoming known as Goose in Top Gun or Mark Greene on NBC’s long-running medical drama, ER. “It goes all the way back to when I was 16,” he tells Et. “I always loved the technical side of film.”
And having acted for a decade before even joining ER, it was only natural for Edwards to take on the opportunity to direct an episode of the series, “Take These Broken Wings,” in the second season. “ER was a great place for my debut because I had the familiarity of all the crew and everybody,” Edwards says. “I could play and experiment with the ideas that I had of how to visualize it.”
The season’s penultimate episode, which aired on May 9, 1996, was a heavy one, with Susan Lewis (Sherry Stringfield) consulting a therapist to cope with...

Saturday nights are no longer for going out - The X Factor is finally returning to our small screens this weekend with new hosts, a fresh judging panel and a fair few format shake-ups.
But whatever happened to the finalists of the first ever series - "barking bloody mad" Rowetta Satchell, red-haired wannabe rocker Tabby Callaghan, cheesy best friend duo 2 to Go and eventual winner Steve Brookstein?
Roberta Howett
Roberta Howett went from unhappy telecommunications worker to Louis Walsh's Dublin darling after her successful X Factor audition. But perhaps it was the curse of the Walsh that resulted in her early exit from the series when she became the first act to be eliminated.
Now 33, Roberta appeared on the debut album of Spanish composer Toni Castells in 2007. She finally released her debut album in 2010, its lead single 'Beautiful Lies' became her first Top 40 single in the Irish Singles Chart,...

Winning film-makers are Ram Nehari, Nir Bergman and Elad Keidan.
Ram Nehari’s [pictured] “eccentric” romantic comedy Nils, a youthful tale about a gifted, mentally ill classical musician, Nir Bergman’s drama Saving Neta and Elad Keidan’s Our Economic Situation have won the top prizes at the Jerusalem Film Festival’s Pitch Point event.
The event aimed at connecting Israeli feature projects with international producers unfolded on the fringes of the festival on Monday and Tuesday.
Nehari’s Nils clinched the €7,000 Cnc Award sponsored by France’s National Cinema Centre (Cnc). Produced by Yifat Prestelnik, the film revolves around romance between two young patients of a mental hospital who escape together.
Director Nehari, who has made several successful romantic comedy series for Israeli television, said the work was inspired by his work mentoring and directing short films by mentally ill people. He said the key characters would be “chemically and emotionally unbalanced.”

Well, my friend the time has come: Lionel Richie is turning 65-years-old on Friday, even though he doesn't look like he's aged since he (and his mustache) popped that pink collar and stared at us from the cover of his 1982 solo album.
The Grammy winning singer, former Commodore and leather pants enthusiast looks like he can still karamu, fiesta, forever. On June 14, Richie made a well-received appearance at the Bonnaroo music festival – and he's currently on the road with his All the Hits, All Night Long tour. When we last checked in on Walt Reynolds (Brendan Dooling) on The Carrie Diaries, things were not going well. He survived a mid-80′s AIDS scare, but it drove him back in the closet, where he broke up with boyfriend Bennet, and begged his disapproving parents for another chance. Oh Walt.

The mid-’80s are an easy source of comedy. Boomboxes the size of Samsonites. John Cafferty and the Beaver Brown Band. Pac Man Fever. White teens trying to moonwalk. All of these sonic and visual punchlines get a workout in writer-director Michael Tully’s Ping Pong Summer — a fun-but-slight coming-of-age story about an awkward Maryland teenager who becomes, well, not a man exactly, but a slightly more comfortable teenager, on a family vacation during the magical summer of 1985.
If that description sounds familiar, that’s probably because Ping Pong Summer has the misfortune of coming after two similar — and better...

Alter Bridge are fast becoming a household name due in no small part to the angelic tones of lead vocalist Myles Kennedy’s stint as Slash’s frontman.
Take three of the four guys from one of the most (unnecessarily) hated bands in history; Creed, replace that bands’ Achilles heel with Mr Kennedy, coupled with the want to break away from all that’s gone before, and you have Alter Bridge.
Whilst their first album still appeared to be leaning on some subtle Creedian tropes with the likes of Broken Wings and Down To My Last, sophomore effort Blackbird was a knock on the door of the all-time greats, instantly propelling the band into their own category of melodic hard rock.
Kennedy was now fully on-board, contributing phenomenal melodies and a twin-guitar attack that would come to define them. Blackbird offered his genuinely jaw-dropping range powered by a technical beast...

Glint in their eyes notwithstanding, Terry McDermott says he and his mentor Blake Shelton never had a “devious master plan” for choosing songs to cover during his tenure on NBC’s The Voice.
“We tried not to overthink it,” says the man who would eventually become the Season 3 runner-up. “We just tried to be faithful to my artistry and to the people who were supporting me through the show. "The Voice" lived up to its name this season, showcasing plenty of powerhouse talents like Trevin Hunte, Amanda Brown, and of course the final three: Cassadee Pope, Terry McDermott and Nicholas David. One of them will be crowned "The Voice" on tonight's season finale.During Monday's final performances, Cassadee killed her rendition of "Cry," Nicholas had some fun with "Great Balls of Fire" and Terry and judge Blake Shelton's duet of "Dude Looks Like a Lady" was definitely entertaining. So, who do we think will win?Cassadee Pope seems like the obvious choice -- she’s been in the lead in iTunes chart sales throughout the competition. The pretty brunette has support from musicians like Pete Wentz and the group All-Time Low, and an (already) huge fan base from her rock group Hey Monday. Last night was the last opportunity for final three on Season Three of The Voice to sing their way into America's heart, and they each went at it from a different angle. They were showcased with one song for voting consideration, one duet with their respective coaches and a reprise of the song that was considered their "breakthrough." While both Terry McDermott and Nicholas David made valiant efforts, only Cassadee Pope's performance of Faith Hill's "Cry," seemed to be finals-grade. Pope went for what she knows works: grandiose country-pop balladry,...

The Voice's final live performances opened last night with a group rendition of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah," in somber tribute to the victims of the Sandy Hook Elementary School tragedy in Connecticut.
On a candlelit stage, all the contestants joined Blake Shelton, Cee Lo Green, Adam Levine and Christina Aguilera in holding name cards of the victims and their ages, leaving not a dry eye in the house.
Then it was down to business, although very little from last night was likely to change the outcome. Cassadee Pope, Terry McDermott and Nicholas David have already distinguished themselves this fall.
We have no way of knowing how close the voting has been since the live shows began, but the three clearly have diverging fan bases and musical styles. It's all going to come down to whose fans vote.

"The Voice" kicked off part one of the finale with a touching tribute to the victims of the Newtown shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School. With candles lining the stage, each of the four coaches, the Top 3, host Carson Daly and some of the former "Voice" contestants from Season 3 held a sign with the name and age of one of the victims as they sang Jeff Buckley's "Hallelujah."

Let out an audible “huh?” as Cee Lo Green declares he didn’t know voices like Nicholas David’s even existed anymore — at least until the “spiritual Minnesota soul man” showed up at the Blind Auditions. (Come to think of it, I think PBS may have run a...

Character actor best known for his role in The Italian Job
The distinctive character actor John Clive, who has died aged 79, will be best remembered by cinemagoers for his appearances in a string of films that gained cult status. In The Italian Job (1969), the British-flag-flying yarn about a daring heist in Turin using Minis as getaway cars, Clive was the garage manager gleefully receiving a wad of banknotes from the released convict Michael Caine as payment for storing his Aston Martin DB4 convertible. The scene was said to have been ad-libbed between the two actors, with Caine putting his enforced absence down to tiger shoots in India. "You must have shot an awful lot of tigers, sir," said Clive as he counted the notes enthusiastically. "Yes, I used a machine gun," retorted Caine.

John Clive, who appeared in films including A Clockwork Orange, the Pink Panther and the Italian Job, has died at the age of 79.
The actor and author, who was also the voice of John Lennon in Yellow Submarine and went on to become an international bestselling author, passed away following a short illness, his family said on Monday.
For many, his most memorable turn was appearing alongside Michael Caine in the original 1969 version of the Italian Job in a scene said to have been ad-libbed by the pair.
Clive, playing the manager of a garage that has been looking after a sportscar belonging to Charlie Croker (Caine) while he has been serving a jail sentence, names the final bill as £200. Croker, who tells him that his absence has...

In its' nearly twenty-five years of existence, the Sam Spiegel Film School in Jerusalem has become one of the best film schools in the world, a true garden patch of talented filmmakers have studied here. Equipped with the tools to create deep some of this country's moving films, several of the short films made by graduates have travelled the world to critical success. However, the school has also earned the belittling nickname "Same Spiegel", for most of the short films created by students of the school were simple dramas (esp. family dramas) with clear conflicts. Nir Bergman (Broken Wings, Intimate Grammar), a graduate of the school, is the perfect example of the Sam Spiegel method – creating very well made family dramas. But in recent years that façade has been cracked. Short films of Sam Spiegel graduates turned to more experimental genres. Benjamin Freidenberg's Guided Tour, which won Best Film...

[Editor's note: I've asked our team of world film correspondents to dish out their top 5 films of the year from their respective countries. Here's Eithan Weitz's take on the Best in Israeli Cinema in 2010.] Looking back on the year of Israeli cinema we first notice that there weren't any standouts such as Waltz with Bashir or Beaufort, meaning none of the films unveiled were exceptional in quality, however Israeli cinema did produce several strong and moving dramas, while the industry choose this year to test out the viability of new genre films. There was the hilarious and extremely successful comedy (a rarity in Israeli cinema) This is Sodom, and horror/slasher movie Rabies. It appears that audiences, both domestically and locally have come to expect excellence when it comes to Israeli movies, and while critical reception on the international an local front paled to previous crop years, and box office had several duds these next five films are worth the mention. #5. The Mission of the Human Resources Manager – Eran RiklisAnother adaptation of a book, this turned out to be a deep and moving drama...

A month and a half ago, everything seemed to be going well for Nir Bergman. His new film, Intimate Grammar was the favorite to win at the Israeli Academy Awards, and a release date was scheduled to a day after the ceremony. But then things took a turn for the worse. Being nominated for 12 awards, the Academy managed to ignore every single one of the people behind the film, and the film went zero for twelve. The outcome hit the movie hard at the box office. Originally the movie was released in medium release (in Israel, a theatre count of 20 or more is considered wide. Bergman's film was released in 12 copies all over the country), but now, with poor results, the movie is showing in about 4 or 5 venues. Bergman has a few successful projects in his resume, including the beautiful and successful Broken Wings, but right now, the number of...

Another moving film unveiled at the Haifa Film Festival was the documentary entitled, Sharon Amrani: Remember His Name. Sharon Amrani was perhaps the most promising director from the Israeli Movie industry in the late 1990's. Bonfire Night, his graduation film from the Sam Spiegel Film School in Jerusalem, won several awards, and his follow up, a 50 min. TV drama entitled Goodbye Cousin, picked up plenty of praise from both from critics and his colleagues alike. He even begun directing a TV series called Jerusalem Mix, but then disaster struck: the 31 year-old Amrani drowned. "It's like if I was dead before directing Late Marriage", says Dover Kosashvili in the one hour documentary. Since the beginning of the millennium, Israeli films became the hit of the international film scene, but still, the unique voice of Amrani, torn between religious and secular worlds, is missing. Amrani's story is brought to the screen by...

This wasn't just a surprising ceremony. It was total humiliation. Intimate Grammar, Nir Bergman's moving story of a boy who mysteriously stops growing, was the favorite to win. Nominated for 12 awards, it was so highly favored to win that the printers were just waiting to complete the one sheet tagline, "Winner of Xx Ophir Awards." With a release date set exactly one day after the ceremony, this beautiful film didn't win a single award. Not even one. There's something fishy about why this went home empty-handed, since Bergman is very much appreciated in the industry, being involved in high profile projects in cinema (Broken Wings), and in television (In Treatment). However, the winner of this year's Ophir ceremony is the lovely crowd-pleaser The Mission of the Human Resources Manager, by director Eran Riklis. The story of a human resources manager in a bakery in Jerusalem, who sets out on...

MacGruber Blu-RayUNIVERSAL Home ENTERTAINMENT2010/Rated R & Unrated/Running Time 91 & 95minsAvailable September 7 – List Price $39.98Just because it makes a hilarious series of SNL skits, doesn't mean it would make a good movie. MacGruber is one of those films I watched in a theater and constantly muttered to myself “What the f*** is this?” I don't mind the idea behind the story, which basically takes elements from TV's MacGuyer and adds them to a ridiculous mullet-headed fool, but the film gets sooo asinine and stupid by tripping on its own ambitions. Star and writer Will Forte along with director/co-writer Jorma Taccone try too damn hard. Their attempt to expand upon their original material with extreme vulgarity and bathroom humor is so over-the-top, its no wonder that Paramount Pictures, the studio which produces and distributes most of the SNL movie adaptions, passed on the project. Makes me miss the days of Jake and Elwood.

With nominations being announced tomorrow, here are a pair which I've yet to see, but who should nab some mentions. Nir Bergman's Intimate Grammar Eight years after his hugely successful drama Broken Wings, Nir Bergman return to feature filmmaking comes via the big screen adaptation of David Grossman's novel. It tells of a young boy in 1960's Israel, who's physical growth mysteriously comes to a sudden stop. Starring Orly Zilbershatz Banai (who also appeared in "Broken Wings" and in "Walking the dog", a TV mini-series Bergman directed in 2006), Evelyn Caplon, and a cast of unknowns. Most critics who've seen the film state that Intimate Grammar is a moving drama, with the last 20 minutes of the film elevating it to a masterpiece status. It won Best Picture in this year's Jerusalem Film Festival, and is likely to receive the biggest amount of nominations, making him the frontrunner for an award.

After dishing out on some of the possible contenders, here's my second entry on the race for this year's Ophir Awards. Here's an overview of some more films up for awards: Dani Menkin's Je t'aime I Love you Terminal Working with a Before Sunrise/Sunset-like template, this is a tale of two young strangers “forced” to spend a short time with one another. Danny Niv (Aka "Mooki") is a well known Israeli rapper, who moonlights as an actor (he had a small part in the 2002's Broken Wings) and despite his good turn here, he is juxtaposed to a female character that is closer to Sally Hawkins's character in Leigh's Happy-Go-Lucky than Julie Delpy in Linklater's classic, thus makes this fall into a mouldy sitcom territory. Menkin is best known for his doc film 39 Pounds of Love, but this attempt into the fiction film realm (see trailer) won't gain any traction among voters.

MacGruber is a movie adaptation of the short comedy sketches that featured on Saturday Night Live that was itself a parody of the awesome MacGyver TV series (Now getting its own movie) but with MacGruber being completely inept at what he does. The feature length film builds on the SNL sketches successfully and creates one of the most entertaining comedy characters I have seen in a long while.
Will Forte stars as MacGruber, a well decorated solider with 16 purple hearts to his name and the only American to be a member of the Green Berets, Navy SEALs and Army Rangers. MacGruber, who’s presumed dead, gets called out of his self-imposed exile in South America to hunt his nemesis Dieter Von Cunth (Val Kilmer), who killed his bride on their wedding day, and has stolen a nuclear missile which he has pointed at Washington DC. But after assembling his crack...

The MacGruber soundtrack. Co-written by and starring SNL comic Will Forte, MacGruber is effectively a feature length spoof of MacGuyver; a TV show that last aired round about the time the dinosaurs were still strutting their stuff and is these days primarily known for being Patty and Selma Bouvier’s fave small screen thrill.
At least the fact that MacGruber’s satirical target is marooned in the shadow corridor where the ‘80s tipped into the ‘90s gives the former’s tie-in record a semi-legitimate excuse for adhering to the current favoured blueprint for movie soundtracks targeted at a young male demographic, namely parading a mass of ironically-selected retro radio tracks, with a few contemporary college rock stompers thrown into the mix for credibility’s sake.
Some of the exhumed material takes us to dark places. Famed ass-clown Michael Bolton is the Black Death of music and should be kept sealed...
