This is the diary Angela Schanelec wrote when she visited Marseilles in March 2002 in preparation to making her film Marseille, released in 2004. And then, something happens. Something awful and irreversibly life-changing happens in this true-life portrait of an urban marriage threatening to fall apart under the strain of coping with daily vicissitudes.
Debutant director Raakhee Sandilya uses her two principal actors to mirror metropolitan mores and meltdowns with masterful vigour and a scrupulous authenticity. The camera is used not to accentuate or glamorize Mumbai’s suburbia but to simply serve as a functional topography for the lives of the couple Sahana and Karan played with such an absence of bravura and flourish that we forget Kalki and Sumeet Vyas are playing characters who don’t exist beyond the film.
At least not in the way we see them here.
The authenticity instilled into the couple’s lives is comparable with what Basu Bhattacharya achieved with Rajesh Khanna and Sharmila Tagore in the...

Having earned over $800 million, Wonder Woman has proven itself on many levels. In a year that started, more or less, with Hidden Figures, and with a summer that had three hits featuring women (the others being Atomic Blonde and Girls Trip) the female half of the movie going audience is finally receiving their due. Director Patty Jenkins has certainly shattered some records and glass ceilings along the way while Gal Gadot has now proven she can open a movie.
With Wonder Woman out today on Blu-ray from Warner Home Video, we have a chance to look back and enjoy it all over again. While it fits neatly in the larger DC Cinematic Universe thanks to the framing sequence, the movie largely works on its own with a vastly superior tone and vision than its predecessors.

I’m not particularly well-versed in comic book-ese, so you’ll have to forgive when I say that the Mother Boxes from the DC Film universe are essentially their version of Marvel‘s Infinity Stones. Um….right? At least they are to me. Essentially, they are some powerful doodads and, more importantly, the villain Steppenwolf in “Justice League” will apparently be looking for them in the upcoming film. That’s probably all you need to know to get this new epilogue to “Wonder Woman.”
As director Patty Jenkins explains, this summer’s blockbuster didn’t have much in the way of deleted scenes, but this new sequence — featuring Lucy Davis’ Etta Candy, Saïd Taghmaoui’s Sameer, Ewen Bremner’s Charlie, and Eugene Brave Rock’s Chief Napi — creates a little connective tissue between “Wonder Woman” and “Justice League.”

As we prepare for Wonder Woman to arrive on Digital HD on August 29th, a brief clip from a previously unseen Epilogue has now surfaced, and it focuses on the character of Etta Candy, played by Lucy Davis.
Details of the scene have already been announced, and it was actually teased earlier today, but this snippet is our first proper glimpse of a moment that’s potentially very significant for the cohesion of the DC Extended Universe. And that’s because it looks like the Epilogue is laying the foundation for Justice League.
Titled Etta’s Mission, the scene involves Etta Candy getting “the boys back together for a secret mission that could impact humanity’s future.” From the clip above, we can see that Sameer (Said Taghmaoui) and Charlie (Ewen Bremner) are the boys in question, and Etta seems to assemble them in the same London pub in which...

Legion‘s main villain will have a new face in Season 2. (But can he dance like Aubrey Plaza, we wonder?)
The FX superhero drama has added Saïd Taghmaoui (Wonder Woman) to next season’s cast, and in a key role: He’ll play Amahl Farouk, aka the Shadow King, the malevolent parasite that took control of David’s brain in Season 1. The casting news was announced at Legion‘s Comic-Con panel on Thursday.

This French disc release of the Jacques Tourneur classic gets everything right — including both versions in picture perfect transfers. Devil debunker Dana Andrews locks horns with Niall MacGinnis, a necromancer “who has decoded the Old Book” and can summon a fire & brimstone monster from Hell, no election fraud necessary. Chris Cornell was fully immersed in work and family in the weeks before his startling death on Wednesday night at age 52.
Although a medical examiner ruled that the former Soundgarden and Audioslave frontman died of suicide by hanging, his family insisted in a statement released through their attorney that the devoted husband and father would not have knowingly and intentionally taken his own life — and question whether any “substances” played a role in his death.

While fans of Chris Cornell knew him for his music, his wife, Vicky, will remember the late 52-year-old singer as a "devoted husband and father."
"Chris’s death is a loss that escapes words and has created an emptiness in my heart that will never be filled," Vicky, who married Cornell in 2004, said in a statement to Et. "He was my best friend. His world revolved around his family first and of course, his music, second."

The medical examiner ruled that Cornell died of suicide by hanging, but the family believes he was not suicidal and instead hint that the side effects of his prescription drugs may have led to his death.

The submitted motion pictures must be first released theatrically in their respective countries between 1 October 2015 and 30 September 2016. The deadline for submissions is 3 October 2016.
During the latest years and after 2008, when Yojiro Takita’s “Departures” won the award, there has not been much success for Se Asian films. The only film from the region that made the final five nominations was the Cambodian “The Missing Picture”, by Rithy Path. It did not won though, and its primary language was French.
However, it is always interesting to find out which film each country considers its most worthy to win an Oscar, so here is the list of this year’s Se Asian nominations.

Three new releases hit theaters this weekend as the "official" start of the summer movie season is now just one week away. This year, however, has had more than its share of box office blockbusters ahead of the summer movie season with three films already topping $300 million domestically and a fourth well on its way to doing that same. The fourth film is, of course, Disney's The Jungle Book, which will be unfazed by this week's new offerings as it will maintain the #1 position at the box office for a third straight week in a row. Said new titles vying for a position in the top ten include Warner's comedy Keanu, Open Road's Mother's Day and Gramercy's animated release Ratchet & Clank. Meanwhile, Captain America: Civil War began its international debut just yesterday and is off to a great start, banking $14.9 million from 15 territories, just behind the performance of Avengers: Age of Ultron last year.

Palm Springs International Film Fest Announces Premieres, New Voices/New Visions, and Modern Masters
The 27th annual Palm Springs International Film Festival (Psiff) has announced its line-up of Premieres, New Voices/New Visions competition and Modern Masters. Films from 60 countries, including 54 premieres (7 World, 17 North American and 30 U.S.), will unspool at the Festival, running from January 1-11, 2016 in Palm Springs, California.
“The line-up this year, while full of unexpected surprises, vividly reflects what is going on in the world around us,” said Festival Director Darryl Macdonald. “There’s a particular focus on stories about displaced people – immigrants, emigrants, refugees, those seeking asylum or shelter. There’s a concurrent trend toward stories revolving around new beginnings and escaping the shackles of the past, whether sexual, cultural, societal or self-imposed. Balancing all of these is a focus on family and romance, along with films involving a healthy dose of magic realism or absurdist comedy, and a plethora of exceptional films dealing with the usual obsessions – music, food, sex and art. All in all, it’s about as well-rounded, as thoughtfully chosen, and as provocative as it’s possible for a smartly curated lineup of new international cinema to be.”
“I am thrilled at the breadth and depth of this year’s program,” said Festival Artistic Director Helen du Toit. “While Modern Masters showcases such widely acclaimed filmmakers as as Apichatpong Weerasethakul, Barbara Kopple and Terence Davies, our New Voices/New Visions program is evidence that new masters are emerging around the world. The range of approaches is extraordinary. Highlights include Raam Reddy's 'Thithi' (India), which skillfully juggles myriad characters in a delightful low key comedy; Yorgos Zois’ 'Interruption' (Greece), which challenges the audience with a complex and highly compelling narrative; and Maris Curran's 'Five Nights in Maine' (USA), featuring David Oyelowo's nuanced and heartbreaking performance as a widower reconnecting with his estranged mother-in-law.”
Showcasing the diversity of international cinema, Festival premieres will include:

If the transformation is a character’s external change then the meltdown is the internal equivalent. Sometimes the most terrifying part of a horror film isn’t when the monster pops out, but when a character loses his or her grip on reality. The psychosis can begin gradually, exacerbated by stress, sickness, or an outside tormentor. Often the character begins a film in complete control of his or her mental faculties. But control is a relative term, and in a horror film, the illusion of control can be just as powerful as actual agency. The options: denial or embracement. The psychological break will come soon enough. The only question is, how broken will the person be once it does?

Writer-director-producer Greg Sneddon.s Bhutan-set drama Arrows of the Thunder Dragon is Australia.s entry for the best foreign language film Oscar.
Set in the 1970s, the story follows brother and sister Kuenphen and Jamyang who live in a remote Bhutanese village where they learn traditional archery from their old warrior grandfather.
Their mother's sudden sickness gives Kuenphen the opportunity to explore the world outside the village while Jamyang must stay home to weave, cook and get married- a fate she is not willing to accept without a fight.
The self-financed film was shot on location in the Himalayan mountains with a cast of local highland village people and a Bhutanese crew including DoP Leki Dorji, none of whom had worked on a feature. Jill Bilock is the editor.
"I'm thrilled to bits," Sneddon tell If. A former Buddhist monk, he got the idea for the film while on a pilgrimage to the country.

Best Foreign Language Film Oscar 2016: 'Viva' with Héctor Medina. Multicultural Best Foreign Language Film Oscar 2016 submissions Nearly ten years ago, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences changed a key rule regarding entries for the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar;* since then, things have gotten quite colorful. Just yesterday, Sept. 16, '15, Ireland submitted Paddy Breathnach's Viva – a Cuban-set drama spoken in Spanish. And why not? To name a couple more “multicultural and multinational” entries this year alone: China's submission, with dialogue in Mandarin and Mongolian, is Wolf Totem, directed by Jean-Jacques Annaud – a Frenchman. And Germany's entry, Labyrinth of Lies, was directed by Giulio Ricciarelli, who happens to be a German-based, Italian-born stage and TV actor. 'Viva': Sexual identity in 21st-century Cuba Executive produced by Best Supporting Actor Academy Award winner Benicio Del Toro (Traffic), Viva tells the story of an 18-year-old Havana drag-club worker,...

Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin's postsplit relationship continues to be nothing short of cordial. The two hung out with famous pals during a Goop event at a private residence in La on Thursday. However, the consciously uncoupled twosome did not pose for pictures together. Cameron Diaz, Nicole Richie, Leslie Mann, Jennifer Meyer, and Dakota Johnson were among the women at the house party, which celebrated the launch of Vicky Vlachonis's new book, The Body Doesn't Lie. Other guests included Jennifer's husband, Tobey Maguire, and Nicole's husband, Joel Madden. Despite her breakup news earlier this year, things have been looking up for Gwyneth lately. Just last weekend, the mom had a picture-perfect Mother's Day with her children, Apple and Moses, and made a smiley appearance at her Goop pop-up store near her home in Brentwood in La. According to reports, Gwyneth and Chris are still living together as they co-parent,...

Supernatural Episode 917
“Mother’s Little Helper”
Written By: Adam Glass
Directed By: Misha Collins
Original Airdate: 25 March 2014
In This Episode…
Sam found a case, and is a little bit hurt that Dean shows no interest in going with him. In Milton, Illinois, a guy is watching TV when his wife comes home from the grocery store. He hassles her distractedly about the fact that she is making meatloaf for dinner, and she responds by bludgeoning him to death with a candlestick. Frankly, it seems like a reasonable response to me. If he doesn’t want meatloaf, he can make his own damn meal.
When Sam rolls into town, he heads straight to the jail and finds the woman has covered the walls of her cell with insane ramblings, scrawled in her own blood - then hanged herself. Sam grabs dinner at a diner, when a local teen, Billy, comes in,...

The American Film Institute this morning announced enticing early details of its upcoming AFI Fest 2013 (November 7-14), including the North American premiere of "Saving Mr. Banks" which will serve as the opening night film. Bennett Miller's Steve Carell and Channing Tatum starring drama "Foxcatcher" will world premiere the following day. Inspired by true events, "Saving Mr. Banks" tells the story of how "Mary Poppins" came to be the family classic it is today -- and the testy relationship Walt Disney (Tom Hanks) had with author P.L. Travers (a feisty Emma Thompson) that almost derailed it. Also based on a true story, "Foxcatcher" stars Carell as an eccentric multi-millionaire who takes in an Olympic Gold Medal-winning wrestler (Tatum), and in the process lures the athlete into dangerous habits, leading Tatum's character on a self-destructive spiral. The festival also announced Agnes Verda, considered the Mother of French New Wave cinema, as the this year's Guest Artistic.

In the 2010 animated comedy Despicable Me, villain Gru (Steve Carell) adopts three girls and learns how to be a father. They become a family, including his cute yellow minions and the elder Dr. Nefario (Russell Brand).
But this wasn't enough. Despicable Me 2 has neighborhood moms trying to match Gru up with their friends, a frazzled Gru running a birthday party on his own, and motherless daughter Agnes preparing a monotonal speech for a Mother's Day program at her school. It seems Gru needs a woman and these girls need a mom, because God forbid a man should raise his children alone.
Maybe I'm reading too much into this animated sequel, but along with the abovementioned gendered thinking, the film throws a smidge of racial/ethnic stereotype (plus a tiny dash of misogyny!) into the mix. Gru suspects that the Latino man who owns a shop in the mall is a former baddie,...

Out of all the characters that you will come across in an Indian film, one that you will rarely see go astray is a mother. That too, the hero’s mother. She is an entity that restrains him with no physical bounds, gives him strength like no other energy drink, drives him to lengths beyond imagination (all within 2.5 hours) and without her, teaches him lessons universities worldwide have yet to discover. From being a sari clad soap opera box drama queen to a sophisticated career driven business magnet, she has transformed in front of us but one thing remains. The positive energy one feels from our filmi “Ma”. It may be a scene or a song, but she is there and her love unconditional. Yes, there may be some stories that forget about her, yet there is no denying, our cinematic mothers have sometimes been the saving grace for our films.

Great film comedies have memorable characters and incidents, usually showing a knack for brilliant casting, and covering turf previously untouched. In 1999, American Pie did all of the above and was a wonderfully funny bit of fluff. It gave us some fine performances, including a resurgent Eugene Levy, the bit with the apple pie, made band camp sound cool, and of course Shannon Elizabeth’s swell nakedness.
The sequels that followed, both theatrical and direct-to-video tried to cash in on the craze but merely retread familiar turf and got less and less funny. Poor Levy would back the truck to the bank to unload all the cash he got to make appearances to at least somehow connect the series together.
However, here we are nine years after American Wedding with American Reunion and it suddenly feels familiar and fresh at the same time. This time around, writer/directors Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg,...
