Ah, Horrible Histories. The show that brings all the slapstick humour and wordplay of Blackadder and Monty Python to a young audience. When Leo (kind of) met Leo.
Leonardo DiCaprio, 43, was among the many to see legendary artist Leonardo da Vinci’s Salvator Mundi painting at Christie’s exhibition space in Rockefeller Center in New York City.
Filmed by photographer Nadav Kander, DiCaprio took part in a video portrait that captured the 16th-century work’s profound effect on those gazing at it. The A-lister was dressed in a black newsboy cap and color coordinated coat as he cracked a subtle smile while looking at the 500-year-old portrait of Christ as Salvator Mundi (Savior of the World).

Prince Harry is a British royal and Meghan Markle is an actress, but it seems the couple have more in common than we thought. According to a recent genealogical investigation by The Mail on Sunday, Harry and Meghan are cousins. Ok, distant cousins, but cousins nonetheless. Meghan and Harry are reportedly related through a late 15th century ancestor of the queen mother, High Sheriff of County Durham Ralph Bowes, who is connected to Meghan's father, Thomas Markle. Ralph's family was a part of England's Streatlam Castle, and his grandson Christopher Hussey moved to America in 1632 and helped discover Nantucket, Ma. His line of the family eventually produced Meghan. RelatedWhat We Will - and Won't - See at Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's Wedding Now onto Harry. Some quick reviews this week. Well, not quite reviews, as I’m not going to get much into plot synopses, but as always I will express some definitely personal opinions. (You know me.) There will be S*P*O*I*L*E*R*S inferred, so caveat emptor!
“The Lie of the Land” (Episode 8, Doctor Who, Series 10): The final episode of a three-episode arc – the first two being “Extremis” and “The Pyramid at the End of the World” – in which alien “monks” have taken over the world through the consent of Bill Potts, the Doctor’s newest companion. Forbidden love during World War II is a well-worn yarn in Hollywood, but The Exception factors in a new obstacle: The last king of the German Empire, banished to live in exile post-wwi.

We revisit Tom's Midnight Garden, Moondial, The Chronicles Of Narnia and a few lesser-known UK children's TV series...
Read our look-back at UK kids' fantasy dramas 1980 - 1984 here.
By 1985 British TV's children's drama had really hit its stride, achieving "a balanced diet of programmes" as Edward Barnes, the head of the BBC children's department observed. The late 80s, arguably, saw a new golden age for spooky and magical kids drama. Excellent production values, improved significantly by well-honed special effects work using Quantel, Paintbox and Harry, and moreover some interesting casting - often of very talented newcomers - produced some of the most memorable dramas of the era.
The second half of the decade saw the BBC riding high on the back of the success of their state-of-the-art adaptation of John Masefield's Box Of Delights. Meanwhile, anthology series Dramarama was going from strength to strength on ITV.

It’s only June and it already feels like the dog days of summer. No breakouts. A slew of niche titles, including several documentaries. This week’s standout is Sundance doc hit “Tickled” (Magnolia), which is showing some potential.
This week’s range of titles is wide and diverse. Some boast high festival and/or review pedigrees, and many come from distributors who aren’t reporting numbers (we offer estimates; “Parched,” an Indian indie from Wolfe Releasing and “2016 Sundance Film Festival Short Film Tour” remained elusive).
Meantime, “Love & Friendship” (Roadside Attractions) and “The Lobster” (A24) continue to thrive ahead of other recent releases and “Maggie’s Plan” (Sony Pictures Classics) keeps going, along with doc standout “Weiner” (IFC).

With a seemingly endless amount of streaming options — not only the titles at our disposal, but services themselves — we’ve taken it upon ourselves to highlight the titles that have recently hit the interwebs. Every week, one will be able to see the cream of the crop (or perhaps some simply interesting picks) of streaming titles (new and old) across platforms such as Netflix, iTunes, Amazon Instant Video, and more (note: U.S. only). Check out our rundown for this week’s selections below.
45 Years (Andrew Haigh)
Andrew Haigh’s third feature as a director, 45 Years, is an excellent companion piece to its 2011 predecessor, Weekend. The latter examined the inception of a potential relationship between two men over the course of a weekend, whereas its successor considers the opposite extreme. Again sticking to a tight timeframe, the film chronicles the six days leading up to a couple’s 45th wedding anniversary.

Look, I don’t know the history of skiing, but until I watched this trailer for The Last King, I had no idea that Norwegians were skiing in the 13th century. This movie is based on a true story that takes place in 1206 in Norway during a time when the country was ravaged by civil war.
The story centers on two men who are charged with secretly protecting the King’s illegitimate infant son, Håkon Håkonsson. Apparently, half the kingdom wanted this kid killed off. It looks like it will be a solidly fun film. Here’s the brief synopsis that came along with the trailer:

"In an ancient land of ice & snow, traitors with dark desires lurk in the shadows..." Magnolia has debuted a trailer for a Norwegian action movie called The Last King, directed by filmmaker Nils Gaup. The story is about two men that have to protect an illegitimate son born in ancient Norway during a civil war. This actually looks awesome - there's even tons of skiing action, plus swords and bows & arrows, everything else. It's obviously playing at the "Game of Thrones" fans, but also looks like it might be a lot of fun to watch. The cast includes Kristofer Hivju, Nikolaj Lie Kaas, Jakob Oftebro, and Thorbjørn Harr. I was dimly aware, as a fan of both Stephen King and Joe Hill, that movies based on King's A Good Marriage and Hill's Horns were on the way. But Uncle Stevie totally took me by surprise with this tweet from last Friday: "My son's film, Horns, is Also available via VOD today. Father and son movies! How Cool Is That???" Horns is the first film made from a work by Joe Hill, based on his 2010 sophomore novel. A Good Marriage is from the same year, with Stephen King adapting his own novella, found in the collection Full Dark, No Stars, for the screen, something he's done rarely and not recently. (The last King feature screenplay appears to have been Pet Sematary, 25 years ago.) I watched both films back-to-back. Here's how they stack up alongside one another.Stand-alone Entertainment ValueHorns starts out like a realist film about a guy...

Scottish Skins actress Freya Mavor plays Beth, the daughter of Angelica, the Countess of Abingdon (played by Eve Best), sheltering at Fanshawe House from a country yet again on the brink of chaos under the tyrannical rule of Charles II. Freya (represented by Hamilton Hodell) can currently be seen in BBC historical drama The White Queen and stars in two Scotland-based films, Not Another Happy Ending and Dexter Fletcher's Sunshine on Leith.

Welcome to “It Is Known – Season 3 Deconstructed”! Every week, you will find my extensive review of the week’s episode of Game of Thrones.
I will explore the narrative that the show weaves. And what a narrative indeed! The story is complex, the characters are manifold, the twists and turns unexpected. I will deconstruct the episodes piece by piece, moving from character to character. This is an unusual approach, I admit, and a bit cumbersome at times, but the show basically does the same. The episodes are just parts of one, epic story, and as parts we have to examine them if we hope to get everything that happens.
There will be no real spoilers for future events, but I will reference the books from time to time, so if you haven’t read them, you might want to be careful around these reviews, although I’ll try to keep the references cryptic.

This film about King Charles II and a fictional doctor flips messily from frippery and farting to 17th-century mental healthcare
Restoration (1995)
Director: Michael Hoffman
Entertainment grade: C–
History grade: B
King Charles II was restored to the throne of England after the fall of the shortlived Commonwealth in 1660.
Language
Dissolute fictional doctor Robert Merivel (Robert Downey Jr) has pawned his instruments, and must go to his father, a glover, for cash to get them back. His father agrees, reluctantly, on the grounds "that the son of a glovemaker should not be denied the use of those gifts that marked you as a physician before you could spell physic!" English spelling had been somewhat standardised by the King James Bible of 1611 (which spells "physic" as "physick", in "Learn before thou speak, and use physick or ever thou be sick", Apocrypha, Sir 1:19). Even so, bearing in mind that Samuel Johnson would...

Rufus Sewell vowed to give up playing bad guys and cads, then found himself out of work for months. So now he's back – in Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter – as a 5,000-year-old bloodsucker
Three years ago, Rufus Sewell gave up bad guys for good. After an early career steaming up teatimes in Middlemarch and Cold Comfort Farm, he slipped, in his 30s, into a rut of rotters – cruel toffs on horseback in films such as A Knight's Tale, The Legend of Zorro and Tristan and Isolde. At 40, he renounced them for better men. Men with names like Tom Builder (from HBO's The Pillars of the Earth) and Dr Jacob Hood (police procedural Eleventh Hour), and Zen, the cool Italian detective from the Michael Dibdin books adapted for the BBC.
Next week Sewell, now 44, can be seen as "Adam, lead vampire" in Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, a 3D film from Timur Bekmambetov,...

Forest Whitaker won the Best Actor Oscar for his transformative performance in 2006's The Last King in Scotland, but since then, Whitaker hasn't found another big-screen role of that caliber, and his most recent high-profile credit was leading a canceled spinoff of Criminal Minds. Now, though, Whitaker may be ready for a comeback: Variety reports that director Lee Daniels is negotiating with him for the plum title role in The Butler, a generations-spanning true tale about Eugene Allen, a White House butler who served eight consecutive U.S. Presidents. What's more, Oprah Winfrey is in early talks to play Allen's wife. Talk about a first lady!
