Ewan McGregor not only received a lifetime achievement award, but also much love and adoration during a brief, but emotional ceremony at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival on Saturday night.
During the event at the big cinema celebration in the Czech spa town, organizers and fans feted the Scottish actor, director and producer as the President’s Award for lifetime achievement was bestowed upon him. On Friday’s opening night of the fest, Alicia Vikander received the same award, while Russell Crowe was honored with the festival’s Crystal Globe.
A warm welcome to McGregor by a host was followed by a particularly well-received career highlights reel that repeatedly drew laughs and cheers for scenes from the likes of the Star Wars universe, I Love You Phillip Morris and, of course, Trainspotting.

“The Boys” is going to see some more Supe competition in Season 4, with the addition of new series regulars Valorie Curry and Susan Heyward. Recurring star Cameron Crovetti, who plays Ryan, Homelander’s (Antony Starr) impressionable son, has been upped to series regular, Prime Video announced Monday.
Curry, known for Peacock’s “The Lost Symbol,” will be portraying Firecracker, while Heyward (“Orange is the New Black”) will be playing Sister Sage. No further details were available about their characters.
At the end of Season 3, Ryan chooses to go with his deranged Supe father instead of Butcher (Karl Urban), setting him down a path that is certain to lead to increased violence and chaos. In the final chilling shots of the finale, Ryan is shown vacantly smiling in response to Homelander’s brutal murder of a protester who had accidentally hit his son with a projectile.

New Delhi, Nov 18 (Ians) Actor Ewan McGregor enjoyed the whole experience of being a director, but says he struggled in accepting the failure of his effort. McGregor directed the film American Pastoral in 2016.
Asked when he would get behind the camera once again, McGregor told Ians: "I would love to. I loved it (directing) so much. It was the most beautiful experience and creative experience. In terms of my dreams of directing, it was absolutely satisfying as I hoped it would be.
"It was also the hardest thing I've ever done when it wasn't very successful, and nobody really went to see it in the cinema. After putting your heart and soul into something for that length of time, that was very difficult for me," he added.

Netflix’s sci-fi drama “The Midnight Sky,” set for release next month, will see George Clooney as a scientist in the Arctic trying to protect a little girl, and prevent a group of astronauts from coming back home after a global catastrophe.
“It’s two different worlds; we were basically saying we were going to shoot ‘The Revenant’ and stop, and then shoot ‘Gravity,’” said Clooney about his seventh feature as a director during an online seminar at EnergaCamerimage Film Festival dedicated to “The Midnight Sky,” an adaptation of Lily Brooks-Dalton novel “Good Morning, Midnight.” He was accompanied by the film’s cinematographer Martin Ruhe.
“Usually, when space movies are shot, up is up and down is down, and that’s not exactly how it works. In ‘Gravity,’ the camera was constantly rotating. We wanted to keep the idea of the horizon being different, without making everyone throw up along the way.

The New Yorker reported that friends close to Roth had confirmed his death.
Throughout his career, Roth won two National Book Awards in addition to the Pulitzer Prize for fiction for his 1997 book “American Pastoral,” which featured his recurring alter ego Nathan Zuckerman. He was well known for writing about the Jewish experience, as well as American ideals, personal identity, and the human body, through autobiographical fiction.
Roth was born in Newark, N.J. in 1933 to first-generation parents and grew up in the Weequahic neighborhood, which would go on to provide the setting for his famous novel “Portnoy’s Complaint.”
His career was prolific, beginning with 1959’s “Goodbye, Columbus” and spanning well into the 2000s, with “Exit Ghost” in 2007. In 2012, he announced he would be retiring from writing fiction after...

Sara Howard lives in the dark world of the seedier side of New York City in the late 19th century. Actress Dakota Fanning plays Sara on the TNT anthology thriller “The Alienist” and was excited to halt her film career for a short while to take on the role. In our recent interview (watch above), she reveals, “I was thrilled at the opportunity to show such a pioneer, ground-breaking character for 1896. We didn’t get to see women in those positions very often, so I loved that aspect of the story. I tend to be drawn to darker subject matter in general.”
SEEEmmy spotlight: Will ‘The Alienist’ repeat the success of Cary Joji Fukunaga’s last murder mystery ‘True Detective’?
Her character is the secretary to the police commissioner and assists new criminal psychologist Laszlo Kreizler (Daniel Bruhl) who is on the hunt for a serial killer targeting street children.

Chicago - Film is often an expression of our society, either as a depiction of how it really is or how it should be. Few films are as daring as Martin McDonagh’s “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri,” which isn’t afraid to show us the state of our society and offer a realistic solution through a grim drama that is as humorous as it is devastating.
Rating: 4.5/5.0
The topics of rape and police incompetence are no laughing matter, but Martin McDonagh knows that to be truly impactful, the film needs moments of levity to keep it from becoming a deluge of depression. Much like his previous film, “In Bruges”, McDonagh presents us with deeply flawed and damaged people, only to later have us sympathize with even the worst of them. McDonagh paints a tragic, American pastoral scene about a complacent rural community. Most people we encounter in this community are simultaneously good and bad,...

Monday-morning quarterbacking is in full effect after Kathryn Bigelow’s “Detroit” opened wide to $7.6 million after a week in limited release. The biggest single target of blame is distributor Annapurna Films’ choice of an August release date for the first film from the distribution arm of Megan Ellison’s high-flying production company (“American Hustle,” “Her,” “The Master”).
Lacking time travel, it’s impossible to predict what the alternative result would have been. But let’s start with the assumption that the team at Annapurna analyzed all options. A case can be made that, faced with a tough film to market, August contained a logic that a fall release did not.
“Straight Outta Compton”
What Made August Appealing?
Late summer brought both opportunity and precedent. Studio distribution operates under a number of preconceptions, with a heavy reliance on history. Key dates belong to the highest-budget releases that need worldwide success and near-simultaneous release.

Admittedly, I’m not familiar with Nicola Yoon‘s well-received Ya novel “Everything, Everything.” Though if Stella Meghie‘s earnest, if underwhelming, sophomore feature is a proper indication, it doesn’t live up to the source material. As proven by multiple underwhelming book-to-film translations of late, whether they might be “American Pastoral” or last month’s sorely disappointing “The Circle,” there’s a fine art to proper book-to-film translations, yet even the most assured, dedicated filmmakers can miss the mark.

TNT released the first trailer for “True Detective” Season 1 director Cary Fukunaga’s new period drama “The Alienist.” “The Alienist” stars Daniel Brühl (“Captain America: Civil War”), Luke Evans (“Beauty and the Beast”) and Dakota Fanning (“American Pastoral”), who work together to hunt for a serial killer who’s murdering boy sex workers at the end of the last century. The term “alienist” is the precursor to “psychiatrist.” The trailer describes it as somebody who dealt with the mentally ill, who “were thought to be alienated from their own nature.” So no, not about aliens. It’s a good time to be Ewan McGregor. Sure, his directorial debut “American Pastoral” didn’t get great reviews, and his return to the role that made him a star with “T2: Trainspotting” was a bit of a disappointment, but he just co-starred in one of the biggest movies ever made with “Beauty & The Beast,” he’s winning some of the best reviews of his career with his dual role in “Fargo,” and there are persistent rumors that he might be returning to the Star Wars universe for an Obi-Wan Kenobi spin-off.

Dakota Fanning's Guide to Growing Up in Hollywood: On Acting, Aging and Leaving Child Stardom Behind
"I didn't stay quiet, I don't think," Dakota Fanning considers, before deadpanning far more certainly, "I don't think I've ever stayed quiet in my entire life." I've just asked Fanning, 23, if she went method for her latest film, the grueling Western drama, Brimstone. Not that it's particularly easy to picture the actress being the type of nightmare that mails her co-stars used condoms or refuses to break character while texting or whatever staying in character might inspire here, with Fanning playing an old-timey prostitute on the run from retribution. (Stabbing Guy Pearce because he took the last bag of Doritos at craft services?) More so, the question was whether the challenge of playing mute (her character's tongue is cut out as a result of a series of truly unfortunate events that play out in the film—out now) necessitated that Fanning remain silent on set. "Oh, no! No way!" she exclaims, letting out a high-pitched...

Miles Teller is proving to be an actor who specializes in roles that combine extreme effort and crippling excess. Aaron Eckhart, meanwhile, has become the kind of performer who can bring a well-worn specificity to grizzled supporting roles.
Combine those elements and you get “Bleed for This,” the latest film from Ben Younger (“Boiler Room”). Teller plays Vinny Pazienza, a boxer struggling to return to the ring after a debilitating neck injury. It’s a performance that showcases Teller’s physicality against the backdrop of a true-life story. As Pazienza’s coach, Kevin Rooney, Eckhart brings his ferocity to a role that requires a less obvious show of continual force.
Younger has said that “Bleed for This” is far from a movie solely for boxing purists; he also wanted to rope in audiences who don’t care about sports at all. It’s an admirable goal, but one that doesn...

Given the casting and The Weinstein Company’s involvement with “The Imitation Game,” it might come as a surprise to many that the film is, in fact, Norwegian director Morten Tyldum’s first English-language film.
Tyldum, however, is anything but an amateur when it comes to filmmaking. His last film, “Headhunters” was both a critical and box office success. It is the highest grossing Norwegian film of all time and in his review, Roger Ebert described the film favorably from the very first sentence. “It’s not often a thriller keeps me wound up as well as ‘Headhunters’ did,” wrote Ebert back in 2012. I knew I was being manipulated and didn’t care. It was a pleasure to see how well it was being done.”
So why take a risk and opt to make a small independent film in English rather than continue on the path that he was already on?...

Anyone making their first film would be thrilled to have the tools at Ewan McGregor’s disposal. Shortly before entering the third decade of his acting career, McGregor seized the opportunity to direct a feature, “American Pastoral.”
McGregor’s good fortune began with his source material, the Philip Roth novel of the same name. Working from one of the more beloved pieces of American literature was a strong foundation, but also set expectations high. To pull off the story of a family unceremoniously thrust into the turmoil of rural American life in the heart of the 20th century, McGregor enlisted an impressive cast.
