Bob Iger spoke at an offsite meeting with senior TV leaders and sought to calm “high anxiety” among thousands of employees after saying last week that linear television “may not be core” to Disney’s business, CNN’s Reliable Sources newsletter reported Wednesday.
The offsite was held Tuesday, according to the newsletter, citing people who attended. An individual with knowledge told TheWrap that the meeting, hosted by Disney Entertainment co-chair Dana Walden, had been planned for weeks, and that Iger had always planned to attend.
The returned CEO’s comments, made in a candid interview last week with David Faber of CNBC, “naturally set off alarm bells inside Disney General Entertainment Content, the division of the Magic Kingdom that houses its linear business and operates quintessential broadcast and cable networks such as ABC, the Disney Channel, National Geographic, and FX,” CNN reporter Oliver Darcy wrote.

CNN has attached a name and a launch date for Kaitlan Collins’ new primetime show.
“The Source with Kaitlan Collins” is set to premiere in its 9 p.m. Et timeslot on Monday, July 10. The new show, whose name vaguely references the network’s now-canceled “Reliable Sources,” hosted by Brian Stelter, will replace “CNN Primetime,” in the 9 p.m. hour, which Collins has been hosting over the past few weeks.
The new show will officially shift Collins off of “CNN This Morning” to primetime, leaving Collins’ co-host Poppy Harlow to host the morning program with a rotation of CNN guest anchors without a permanent co-host. While former CEO Chris Licht, who was ousted from the network in early June, lined up the re-imagined morning program in fall 2022 with Collins, Harlow and Don Lemon, the trio has since been broken up after Lemon exited the network in April.

New CNN boss Chris Licht’s latest — and biggest — shakeup of the news network’s lineup signals an attempt to hit two (or three) birds with one stone.
By shifting Don Lemon from his 10 p.m. Et perch after a seven-year run, Licht is eliminating the lowest-rated show in primetime cable news, according to August ratings from Nielsen Media Research — while also quieting critics who have targeted Lemon’s opinionated hosting style. And by tapping Lemon to lead the network’s as-yet-untitled new morning show alongside Poppy Harlow and Kaitlan Collins, Licht also aims to give new life to another key part of the schedule that has long lagged behind MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” and Fox News’ “Fox and Friends” in viewership.

In his first major analyst hire since joining CNN, CEO Chris Licht said Tuesday that the cable news channel had hired John Miller, a former TV correspondent who also had two long stints with the NYPD, to serve as its chief law enforcement and intelligence analyst.
Miller was most recently the NYPD’s deputy commissioner for intelligence and counterterrorism, and retired from the department earlier this summer. He had previously worked as the NYPD’s chief spokesperson in the 1990s, and also worked as a spokesperson for the LAPD and the FBI.
But he also had a long career in TV news, working as a correspondent and anchor (of 20/20) for ABC News, and as a correspondent for CBS News, where he crossed paths with Licht.

CNN White House correspondent John Harwood is leaving the cable news channel, he said Friday.
“[L]ook forward to figuring out what’s next,” Harwood tweeted, after noting that Friday would be his last day at the channel.
“We appreciate John’s work covering the White House, and we wish him all the best,” a CNN spokesperson tells The Hollywood Reporter.
It is not immediately clear what spurred on the departure, though Harwood still had plenty of time left on his multiyear contract.
A source familiar with the matter said that Harwood learned about CNN’s decision last month.
Harwood joined CNN in January 2020 from CNBC, where he had been chief Washington correspondent. At both CNBC and CNN, Harwood garnered a reputation for his sharp criticisms of President Donald Trump and the Republican Party, which he called “fundamentally broken” in 2019.

Harwood did not give a reason for his exit, but he has been particularly outspoken about Donald Trump and what he sees as Trump’s threat to democracy, even as the network’s new leadership has been moving toward a more neutral tone.
Harwood did not immediately respond to a request for comment. A spokesperson for the network said, “We appreciate John’s work covering the White House, and we wish him all the best.”

One week after Brian Stelter signed off the abruptly canceled “Reliable Sources” for the last time, CNN aired a rerun of “Inside Politics” during the Sunday morning time slot — and will continue to do so while it seeks a replacement.
Sunday’s 8 a.m. Et “Inside Politics” was replayed in full at 11 a.m. where “Reliable Sources” used to be. There is no current replacement in the works for the plum news-magazine time slot, an individual with knowledge of the network’s plans told TheWrap.
In the meantime, the Sunday version of “Inside Politics,” hosted by Abby Phillip, will continue to replay at the old “Reliable Sources” time, the person said. John King hosts “Inside Politics” on weekdays at noon.
Poor ratings dogged “Reliable Sources,” which had its worst year since Stelter took over the 30-year-old program in 2015 and was losing viewership despite a slight July rebound. Ratings data for...

CNN has no plans to replace Brian Stelter’s just-canceled “Reliable Sources” with another media-focused show in the foreseeable future, TheWrap has learned.
“There are a number of programs in the concept and development phases, and it’s possible media coverage will be an element of a show,” a network insider told TheWrap, “but no indication that an exclusively media beat show is part of the plan.”
A CNN spokesperson didn’t immediately respond to TheWrap’s request for comment.
Experts say that the cancellation of the show — launched after attacks on media coverage of the Gulf War in 1993 — exacerbates the dearth of mainstream media criticism given media critic Margaret Sullivan’s recent departure from The Washington Post and columnist Ben Smith’s exit from The New York Times

Back in 2018, deep in the dark days of the Trump administration, CNN began running a new series of advertisements for itself. They were called the “Facts First” spots and mostly involved people mistaking a banana for an apple.
“This is an apple,” one of the 60-second promos began, showing a plump red honeycrisp in front of a white backdrop as a piano tinkled a pensive tune. “Some people might tell you it’s a banana. They might scream ‘banana, banana, banana’ over and over again. They might put banana in all caps. You might even start to believe that this is a banana. But it’s not. This is an apple.”
It was a simple, elegant metaphor that said everything you need to know about the nightmare of cable news broadcasting during the Trump era.
But here we are, four years later, and CNN is upsetting its own apple cart,...

When Brian Stelter signed off from the last installment of CNN’s “Reliable Sources” Aug. 21, the number of mainstream vehicles analyzing an increasingly confusing media industry shrank even further.
Stelter bid farewell the same day Washington Post media columnist Margaret Sullivan ended her run — asking such notables as Carl Bernstein and Jeffrey Goldberg on air whether the press is doing enough to cover topics ranging from disinformation to climate change. The lead story of his hour was a dire one: his program’s own cancellation after three decades. “It’s going to be on you to hold CNN accountable,” Stelter told viewers in the show’s waning moments, later adding: “The free world needs a reliable source.”

NPR’s Eric Deggans has some concern about the more apolitical direction that CNN is seeking under its new boss Chris Licht, saying on the network, “I hope that what we’re not going to see CNN do is institute some sort of false equivalence.”
On the final episode of“Reliable Sources” Sunday, the NPR TV critic said he thinks the problem with the perception of the media right now is the lens through which it looks at today’s politics and the lack of accountability for politicians who break the law or use damaging rhetoric.

Brian Stelter bid farewell to his show Reliable Sources and CNN on Sunday, August 21, three days after the network announced it was canceling the series and that Stelter would be leaving the company. The media correspondent, who worked as a media reporter at the New York Times for six years prior to taking over the long-running news media talk show in 2013, stressed the importance of his now-former network “to be strong” for America. “I know it’s not partisan to stand up for decency and democracy and dialogue,” Stelter said in his closing statement. “It’s not partisan to stand up to demagogues. It’s required. It’s patriotic. We must make sure we don’t give platforms to those who are lying to our faces. But we also must make sure we are representing the full spectrum of debate and representing what is going on in this country and this world.

Don Lemon and Jim Acosta, two of CNN’s most opinionated and outspoken on-air journalists, are expected to stay at the network despite its new direction to a less overtly left-wing bent, an individual with knowledge of the network’s plan told TheWrap.
Since the sudden, inelegant firing of chief media correspondent Brian Stelter this week and the cancellation of his show, “Reliable Sources,” the CNN newsroom has been abuzz with speculation over who might be next to go, as the message has spread that the network is going more middle of the road.
The rumor mill has understandably turned to Lemon, who in recent years has been overtly opinionated and politically progressive in his anchoring of the primetime news slot — whether discussing the Black Lives Matter movement, misdoings of the Trump administration or the Supreme Court overturning of Roe v. Reliable Sources is ending after 29 years on CNN and longtime host Brian Stelter is leaving the cable news network. The last episode of the series will air this Sunday. Stelter was informed of the show's cancellation by CNN chief Chris Licht on Wednesday.

CNN’s chairman and CEO Chris Licht told anxious staffers Friday that more changes are coming to CNN, as he addressed the news of Brian Stelter’s exit following the cancellation of his Sunday show Reliable Sources.
According to sources who were present, Licht told CNN employees at Friday’s well-attended editorial meeting, “There will be moves you may not agree with or understand.” Some took that to mean they may not like some of the changes.
He added, “I want to acknowledge to everyone that this is a time of change. I know that it is unsettling.”
Licht also expressed some irritation over some media reports about CNN’s plans, characterizing them as incorrect assumptions. The exec stressed to staff that those fluid plans are only known by a few in CNN management’s inner circle.

On Friday morning, CNN CEO Chris Licht addressed the decision to cancel the Sunday show Reliable Sources, and told staff on the news channel’s 9 a.m. editorial call that there will be more changes to come.
“I want to acknowledge that this is a time of significant change, and I know that many of you are unsettled,” Licht said, according to multiple people on the call. “There will be more changes, and you might not understand it or like it.”
CNN’s decision to cancel Brian Stelter’s show brought renewed anxiety to the halls of 30 Hudson Yards, according to multiple CNN staffers.
While Licht has made it clear since he began that there would be changes coming to CNN’s lineup, and not just to its streaming strategy, those plans “hadn’t really sunk in yet,” said one of the staffers.

Brian Stelter’s ouster from CNN may have been clinched by the network’s desire to tone down partisanship, but the poor ratings for the media correspondent’s weekly “Reliable Sources” show didn’t help his case to stay on at the network.
The Sunday morning show has had its lowest-rated year since 2015 — two years after Stelter took over as host — and has lost 26 of its total audience compared to last year. Among the key news demo of viewers 25-54, the show has lost about 34 of its viewers.
And in June, the 30-year-old program posted its worst ratings since 2001, managing only 79,000 viewers in the key news demo — and an average of 585,000 total viewers.
“Reliable Sources” bounced back a bit in July to about 108,000 average viewers in the key news demo and about 663,000 total. That’s not far off CNN’s average total-day audience for demo viewers and comfortably above the...

It didn’t take long for the job offers to start rolling in for Brian Stelter – and those were some of the better attempted conservative Twitter dunks on the “Reliable Sources” host the day his ouster from CNN was announced.
Greg Gutfeld, host and ringleader of Fox News’ after-dark scrum “Gutfeld!,” tweeted mere minutes following the news break Thursday, and kept it simple: “Yo @brianstelter – my show is hiring,” said the host of what is now the highest-rated show in late night.

No doubt the Gutfeld crew would, indeed, welcome Stelter to the fray, where he’s been mercilessly mocked over the years (despite a dearth of words that rhyme with “Stelter”).

Brian Stelter had planned to announce his exit from CNN and the cancellation of his show, “Reliable Sources,” which he’s hosted for nine years, on the air on Sunday, according to an individual with knowledge of the show.
It was not to be. The news leaked on Thursday and once again the CNN newsroom is aflutter with anxiety and rumor: What is new chairman and CEO Chris Licht’s plan for the future of the news network? Why would Stelter, a respected media journalist, get the boot along with his show? Who else is at risk to get the ax after Stelter and, last week, legal analyst Jeffrey Toobin? Will the outspoken primetime host Don Lemon or Jim Acosta, the sometimes combative chief domestic correspondent, be next?

He will report to Amy Entelis, executive VP of talent and content development for CNN Worldwide. Among his duties, Kadro will help revamp CNN’s morning news program. He will also help brainstorm new programming for the cabler.
Kadro is a former deputy to Chris Licht, who is now CEO of CNN, and took over as executive producer of “CBS This Morning” after Licht departed to work on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.”

Brian Stelter is out as CNN’s chief media correspondent and host of “Reliable Sources,” which will be canceled upon his departure — an expected move, given an expressed desire by the network’s new leadership to move away from opinion-based news programming.

Unfortunately, coverage over this and other scandals remains fairly surface and focused on the outrage vs. the actual impact. That cloudy coverage means the American public is still mostly unaware of what this administration is actually doing to this country – and it’s terrifying.
