Countdown number-wrangler Carol Vorderman will tell you that she appeared on the very first celebrity version of a British TV show in December 1998, but Carol Vorderman has been getting high on her own supply. 18 months before she gave her Cher in a 1998 episode of Celebrity Stars in Their Eyes, Wendy Richard and Todd Carty from EastEnders graced episode one of Celebrity Ready Steady Cook, and they’d appreciate Vorders giving it a bit less of all that, thank you.
The point being: celebrity versions of TV shows are mostly dross. Not being able to choose from the top drawer of fame, they generally feature the packing peanuts of the TV world. These shows use what might be described as a homeopathic definition of ‘celebrity’, in that this glass of water has a better chance of remembering who any of the cast are than I do.
The cast of Celebrity Race Across the World is different.

The TV presenter was responding to claims that the actor is reportedly dating Israeli model Eden Polani.
Neither DiCaprio nor Polani have confirmed if they are in a relationship, and The Independent has contacted DiCaprio’s representative for comment. Meanwhile, a source told People: “Leo and Eden just so happened to have been seated next to each other at the party, and were hanging in the same group.”

House of the Dragon viewers are reacting to the news regarding a key departure just three weeks into the series.
The Game of Thrones spin-off, which is a prequel set almost 200 years before the original show’s events, has broadcast two episodes to date, with a third arriving on Sunday (4 September).
HBO has announced that the show will return for a second season following news of record-breaking ratings.
However, the series will be without a key name as it’s been revealed that co-showrunner Miguel Sapochnik will not be returning.
Sapochnik, who directed several Game of Thrones episodes, has been a driving force behind the prequel alongside Ryan J Condal and George Rr Martin, who is the author of the source material of both shows.
Rather than there being any bad blood, though, Sapochnik’s decision seemingly comes due to a desire to move away from Thrones-related projects.

An explosive new documentary explores allegations surrounding Armie Hammer, as well as the Hammer family history at large.
Released on Discovery+ on Friday (2 September), House of Hammer is a three-part examination of the alleged abuses of the actor, which then delves into the reported wrongdoings of Armand Hammer, the actor’s grandfather.
In 2021, a woman identified as Effie publicly accused the Call Me By Your Name star of raping and abusing her, a claim he denies. Since then, others have alleged sexual misconduct against the actor, two of whom appear on camera in the documentary series.
Hammer has repeatedly denied allegations of sexual misconduct made against him.

Mark Kermode has struck again – he’s torn a film to shreds so much that people are now considering seeing it.
The film critic shared his review for new release Blackbird, which is a passion project by Lord of the Dance creator Michael Flatley.
Flatley writes, directs and stars in the film, which he has described as “a tribute to the golden age of cinema”. However, according to Kermode: “I think a session on the golden toilet of cinema is closer.”
The film, which Kermode called “mind-bendingly terrible”, follows a retired secret agent whose past comes back to haunt him after opening a nightclub in Barbados.
Reviews of the film have seen the film branded “fabulously bad” and “oddly entertaining” – but Kermode has gone out on a limb to call Blackbird “genuinely one of the worst films I have ever seen”, telling his followers: “As we all know, I’ve seen Oversexed Rugsuckers From Mars.

Kelly Brook left her radio co-host Jk redfaced after showing him a risqué photo of herself that will feature in The Crown.
The model and presenter has revealed that producers of the Netflix series requested to use the photo in a scene in the show’s sixth season, which will be set in either 1999 or the early 2000s, at the height pf Brook’s fame.
Brook, who co-hosts Heart Breakfast with Jamiroquai singer Jk, showed “the picture in question” on her phone, revealing that “it would be printed as a poster, and it would be put up in one of the character’s dressing rooms”.
She then told Jk: “Right, I’m going to click on the picture and show you. Are you ready?”
After seeing the photo, which shows Brook posing in her underwear, he said: “Oh dear! Hello. Hang on a second… I don’t... no, I can’t see that.

Idris Elba has said that debates about Black British actors taking roles away from Black American performers prompt an “unintelligent argument”.
The conversation around casting reached its peak when Daniel Kaluuya was nominated for an Oscar for his starring role in Get Out, a film about racism in the US.
At the time, Samuel L Jackson famously commented: “I tend to wonder what that movie would have been with an American brother who really understands that,” suggesting that racism was different in the US to the UK.
Appearing on internet talk show The Shop (via The Root), Elba was asked by host Maverick Carter about British actor Naomi Ackie playing Whitney Houston in forthcoming biopic I Wanna Dance With Somebody.
“You know what I noticed?” Elba responded. “You said Black women in America versus an English woman. Like being English makes you less Black? To me, that defines how unintelligent the whole argument is.

Helen Hunt has spoken out about her unsuccessful attempt at getting a sequel to Twister made, claiming she and her collaborators were unable to spark producers’ interest.
The actor starred alongside Bill Paxton in the original movie in 1996. The pair played a separated couple who had to abandon their personal issues in order to help combat a series of violent tornadoes destroying Oklahoma.
Globally, the film made a total of 494.5m (£428m) during its theatrical run and was one of the most successful releases of that year.
However, Hunt has revealed that her aim to have a sequel made in recent years was not met with enthusiasm.
In an interview with The Guardian, the Oscar-winner explained that after working together on the film Blindspotting, Hunt and actor Daveed Diggs and writer Rafael Casal came up with the idea of an updated version of Twister.

Scarlett Moffatt has shared an emotional video after a stranger followed her, having seen her location on social media.
The presenter and former Gogglebox star posted a video late on Wednesday (31 August) telling followers about how, after posting about travelling to London, she was approached by a man she didn’t know.
Moffatt began the clip by thanking rail staff members named Danny and Neil for their help during the event.
“I’m doing this so that people realise the importance of using social media and not always posting where you are,” a visibly shaken Moffatt said into the camera.
“I stupidly, naively, posted an Instagram saying, ‘Off to London on the train,’ and when I got into King's Cross station, there was a guy there.
“Because Danny and Neil were there, I stayed calm, but this guy came at me and was saying ‘Scarlett, I've been waiting for you,...

The family of Bill Turnbull paid tribute to him as they announced his death yesterday, saying the BBC and Classic FM presenter made them laugh every day and that they were “immensely proud” of him.
The 66-year-old, who co-hosted Breakfast for 15 years, died at home in Suffolk almost five years after being diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer.
A special programme will be shown in his honour on Friday, the BBC said.
“The last week of his life was very special: the whole family was with him and we shared some wonderful moments,” wife Sarah McCombie said in a statement read out on air by Naga Munchetty.
“Even though he was often in pain, Bill was dignified and brave throughout, and he was his usual determined self right to the very end.
“Billy made us laugh every day and we are immensely proud of him – he was the heart of our family.

Naomi Judd’s daughter Ashley calls for changes to laws around bereaved families after mother’s death
Ashley Judd has said that having her mother Naomi’s suicide play out in public caused her “trauma” and “horror”.
The country musician died of suicide in April aged 76, one day before she was due to be inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame.
The Judd family later filed a court petition asking that police reports and recordings made during the investigation into her death be sealed, as releasing them would cause “significant trauma and irreparable harm”.
However, knowing that the information would be made public, Ashley said that her mother had died by suicide and urged people to reach out to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline (800-273-8255). She said that her family had agreed she should discuss her mother’s death to help raise awareness of the cause, and the availability of help.

Sylvester Stallone’s brother has praised the actor for finishing his TV series amid “tough obstacles” within his personal life.
Earlier this month, the Rocky actor’s wife of 25 years Jennifer Flavin filed for divorce.
On Wednesday (31 August), Sylvester shared a video from his last days on set of his forthcoming TV series Tulsa King.
“This was a very long, difficult, exciting, mind blowing production [that] has just ended in Oklahoma. Though it was a long time to be away it was worth it and to work with fantastic talent in front and behind the camera,” Sylvester wrote.
The actor’s brother Frank commented on the post: “We are so proud of you, through tough obstacles the real pros show up and deliver.”
He added the hashtags: “Brotherhood” and “#loyalty”.
On 19 August, Flavin filed a petition for “dissolution of marriage and other relief” from Stallone in Palm Beach County, Florida.

Dalíland director Mary Hallon has said that Ezra Miller has not been removed from the forthcoming film after their name did not appear on a film festival cast list.
The actor, who uses they/them pronouns, has been involved in several recent allegations ranging from disorderly conduct and assault to burglary.
Last week, they said that they were in a period of “intense crisis” and “suffering complex mental health issues”.
Earlier in the month, a cast list had been announced for the TIFF premiere of Dalíland, a film which sees both Miller and Ben Kingsley star as Salvador Dalí.
With Miller’s name not among the cast list, some had speculated that they had been cut from the film.
However, director Hallon has now told Vanity Fair that this is not the case and that the actor still appears in three scenes.
“[Miller] turned in a completely realised performance,” she said.

To inhabit the part for the film, which marks Fraser’s first leading role in nearly a decade, the actor underwent a significant physical transformation. He also used prosthetics.
Speaking to Vanity Fair, Fraser said that he never wanted weight to become a “one-note joke” within The Whale.
“I looked at other body suits that had been used in comedies over the years, usually for a one-note joke,” Fraser explained.
“Whether intended or not, the joke is, it defies gravity. This was not that.”
Vanity Fair also notes that film studio A24 did not provide any more photos of Fraser, including any showcasing his full body transformation, for the feature.

Vogue Williams has spoken out about her forthcoming television series Send Nudes: Body Sos, in which people with various insecurities share naked photos for judgement from the public.
New to E4, the reality programme will feature a range of people who’ve considered altering their bodies surgically, who are then given the opportunity to see what they would look like with their desired differences using computer technology.
According to Williams, who hosts the show, the series is more about building confidence than discussing issues surrounding plastic surgery.
“It's not a series about plastic surgery, but it is about helping people who are considering surgery because they are really self-conscious about a part of their body to the extent it's affecting their way of life,” she said, ahead of the show’s launch on Wednesday (31 August).
“When I meet them they're on the fence about surgery, but it's something they've thought about for a long time.

Daniella Monet, a former actor on Victorious, has claimed that she raised concerns to Nickelodeon over a scene that she felt was too sexualised.
The children’s programme, which ran from 2010 to 2013, starred figures such as Ariana Grande and Victoria Justice and was led by TV producer and former Nickelodeon collaborator, Dan Schneider.
In recent weeks, Schneider’s creations have come under scrutiny once again, following the release of Jennette McCurdy’s memoir, I’m Glad My Mom Died.
In it, McCurdy went into detail about her experiences as a star on Nickelodeon as a child, which has prompted others to come forward about alleged exploitation and other controversies.
Earlier this month, fans claimed Grande was both “infantilised and sexualised” in scenes on Sam and Cat. Now Monet, who played Trina Vega in Victorious, has spoken out about her experience as part of a longer investigation by Insider.

Rob Schneider has shared his thoughts about the moment he thought Saturday Night Live had lost its way.
Referring to the 2016 sketch of Kate McKinnon as Hillary Clinton, the 58-year-old comedian said that was the moment he realised SNL was “over”.
During a conversation on The Glenn Beck Podcast about how the comedian’s political views have shifted towards the right in recent years, Schneider said: “I hate to crap on my own show.
“When Hillary Clinton lost – which is understandable why she lost. She’s not exactly the most logical person in the room. And then when Kate McKinnon went out there on Saturday Night Live in the cold opening and all that, and she’s dressed as Hillary Clinton, and she started playing ‘Hallelujah.’ I literally prayed, ‘please have a joke at the end.”
He continued: “Don’t do this. Please don’t go down there.’ And there...

Lord Sugar is attracting crticism for saying people should be “paid less” for working at home.
The Apprentice star and business tycoon responded to a Good Morning Britain segment about how the cost of living crisis will affect those who no longer work in an office following the pandemic.
Sugar, 75, wrote on Wednesday (31 August): “@Gmb are saying people who work from home should be paid more to keep warm as companies are saving money while the worker are away. Rubbish.”
He continued: “They have to pay rent, heating and rates with or without a full work place. People should be paid less they are saving travel costs. [sic]”
Following his post, many called the business tycoon out for his words, and questioned his persistence in criticising those who work from home despite its benefits.
“People should be paid their worth and what their job is worth,” commenter @Crim_sol_PH said,...

Masked talent formats and survival shows for a pandemic-hit world are among the buzz-worthy projects identified by The Wit’s Fresh TV online session at Mipcom Monday.
Virginia Mouseler, the format tracker’s CEO, framed her online session on Mipcom Online+ like a TikTok feed, complete with dance moves – all while listing her pick of fresh new TV formats.
According to Wit’s data, “The Masked Singer” was this year’s most adapted format, and the masked star concept has been adopted by a slew of similar shows.
Three are being distributed by Banijay Rights and hail from Germany, a territory, Mouseler noted, that was able to resume production quite soon after lockdown.
