Action franchises feel more popular than ever before, but there still seems to be a dearth of female action stars on-screen. Alicia Vikander helped change that in 2018, packing on 12 kilograms of muscle to star in a scrappy reboot of "Tomb Raider." Compared to Angelina Jolie's two-film turn as Lara Croft, Vikander was on a completely different level. Both iterations of "Tomb Raider" have their merits, of course, but the reboot eschewed the oversexualized, mid-noughties tone that had plagued the property for years. For once, Lara Croft was free of the male gaze. That's not to say that Vikander didn't look amazing in Lara's iconic grey tank and khaki fatigues. (Those shoulders! Those abs!) But the film put as much emphasis on the character's inner world — and her harrowing origin story — as it did on her looks.
And clearly, that renewed focus paid off. "Tomb Raider" wasn't exactly a critical darling,...

The more things change, the more the Hollywood studios stay the same. At least that’s one of the surprising lessons of Barbenheimer, Sound of Freedom, Indiana Jones 5, Mission: Impossible 7, Fast and the Furious 10, and the other big-budget summer box office bets trying to help the movie business pull off a historic comeback.
Twenty years ago, we wrote a book, Open Wide, about a battle at the multiplex on the weekend of July 4, 2003, for the hearts, minds and dollars of the American public. In some respects, nothing has changed. The showdown that July weekend two decades ago pitted pink against black, and a sparkly self-actualized blonde heroine against a grim avatar of thermonuclear war.

Director Misha Green won’t be tackling “Tomb Raider 2” next but is instead focusing on an older original thriller project that she co-wrote with Craig J. Flores. A new report from Deadline reveals that Green will be directing “Sunflower” and will see actress Jurnee Smollett (“Spiderhead“) taking a lead role in the new thriller. As per the logline, the Lionsgate pic will focus on “two women struggle to escape from a deranged college professor who holds them hostage on a remote sunflower farm.” However, it’s a mystery who will take on this key character of the villainous college professor that is keeping these folks captive on this isolated farm but certainly sounds like a meaty part to fill.

Lara Croft has hit a snag ahead of the “Tomb Raider” sequel.
Alicia Vikander, who starred as the video-game heroine in the revival 2018 film, told Entertainment Weekly that a follow-up is “in somebody else’s hands” after the Amazon buyout of MGM for 8.5 billion in March 2022. A sequel to “Tomb Raider” was previously announced with “Lovecraft Country” creator Misha Tyler attached to write and direct.
“With the MGM and Amazon buyout, I have no clue. Now it’s kind of politics,” Vikander explained. “I think Misha and I have been ready, so it’s kind of in somebody else’s hands, to be honest.”
While Vikander “can’t really say” much about Green’s update on Croft, the film will no doubt pick up after the events of the 2018 film helmed by Roar Uthaug and detailing Croft’s origin story inspired by her father (Dominic West) and his quest for an ancient Japanese statue.

It looks like Ben Wheatley will not be jumping solely from remake (Rebecca) to sequel (Tomb Raider 2) to… another sequel (The Meg 2). The director has secretly shot a new horror film titled In The Earth and it’s already been acquired by Neon for a U.S. theatrical release next year.
Starring Joel Fry, Ellora Torchia, Hayley Squires, and Reece Shearsmith, the film’s plot has clearly been inspired by the current real-world crisis. As the world searches for a cure to a disastrous virus, a scientist and park scout venture deep in the forest for a routine equipment run. Through the night, their journey becomes a terrifying voyage through the heart of darkness, the forest coming to life around them.

Another one bites the dust, folks. Insert your own joke here about this movie not being able to get any Oscar respect, but we’ve lost a new awards player, folks. The Aretha Franklin biopic, which stars Jennifer Hudson as the legendary singer, now becomes the latest victim of Covid-19 and the theatrical experience largely being on pause in the major markets. Read on for more… According to Variety, MGM has changed their January 15th release date to August 13th. We're going to have to wait an indefinite amount of time to see Alicia Vikander suit up as Lara Croft again. It has been announced that MGM has pulled Tomb Raider 2 from its March 19, 2021 release date and currently, hasn't announced a new scheduled release for the film. Exhibitors got another setbacks today as MGM/United Artists Releasing has delayed the release of the Aretha Franklin biopic Respect, starring Jennifer Hudson, from January 15 to August 13. MGM also has pulled its Tomb Raider sequel starring Alicia Vikander from its March 19 premiere date; that film now is unset.
The moves come amid continuing uncertainty gripping the global theatrical business as theaters in several international territories reducing their hours of operation or close temporarily.
Respect initially was set to unspool in a Christmas Day platform release, but was moved in July to a wide opening this coming Martin Luther King Jr. Day weekend. The film is directed by Liesl Tommy and stars Dreamgirls Oscar winner Hudson as the Queen of Soul, Forest Whitaker as C.L. Franklin, Marlon Wayans as Ted White, Mary J. Blige as Dinah Washington and Tituss Burgess as Rev. Dr. James Cleveland.

MGM has delayed “Respect,” the Aretha Franklin biopic starring Jennifer Hudson, by seven months from Jan. 15 to Aug. 13 in the latest shuffle of a major title amid the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.
The studio also announced Tuesday that it has removed “Tomb Raider 2,” starring Alicia Vikander, from its March 19 release date.
“Respect,” titled after Franklin’s 1967 hit, had originally been scheduled to be released in August of this year but was shifted at the start of the pandemic to the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend. Hudson, who won a supporting actress Oscar for “Dreamgirls,” was personally selected for the role by Franklin before Franklin died in 2018 at the age of 76.
Franklin won 17 Grammys, starting with “Respect” in 1968 and “Chain of Fools” in 1969. The film, directed by Liesl Tommy, also stars Forest Whitaker as C.L. Franklin, Marlon Wayans as Ted White, Mary J. Blige as Dinah Washington and Tituss Burgess as Rev.

Ben Wheatley is at a very interesting crossroads in his career. In the past week, Netflix released his latest feature film, “Rebecca,” which is a remake of a film from Alfred Hitchcock and finds the filmmaker working in the realm of thrillers. However, just as that film hits the streaming platform, the director is prepping his next production, “Tomb Raider 2,” and it was just announced that he’s likely going to direct “The Meg 2,” shortly after.

Assuming Covid-19 hasn’t wiped out the movie theater business by the time 2021 rolls around, cinemagoers and gamers alike are going to be spoiled for choice over the next 12 months or so. Big screen reboots of Resident Evil and Mortal Kombat aside, more, let’s say, family-friendly adventures such as Tomb Raider 2 and, perhaps the most anticipated of them all, Uncharted, are scheduled to drop over the summer months.

Lionsgate has set a March 19, 2021 wide-release date for The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, the meta action comedy that stars Nicolas Cage as a version of himself.
Tom Gormican is directing the film based on the screenplay he wrote with Kevin Etten. Kevin Turen is producing.
The plot: Creatively unfulfilled and facing financial ruin, the fictionalized version of Cage must accept a $1 million offer to attend the birthday of a super fan. When things take a wildly dangerous turn, Cage is forced to live up to his own legend, channeling his most iconic and beloved on-screen characters in order to save himself and his loved ones.
The project has been percolating since November, when Lionsgate entered final negotiations for the film, to be helmed by Gormican, who created the Fox comedy series Ghosted that Etten executive produced.

According to Ryan Scott of MovieWeb there’s not a lot to say about Tomb Raider 2 other than it’s a go and it will be taken over by a different writer and director since the director for the first one didn’t seem capable of delivering what people wanted the first time around. Warning: This article contains spoilers for the ending of 2018’s Tomb Raider.
We liked 2018’s Tomb Raider more than most, especially its promising ending, which saw Lara Croft (Alicia Vikander) figuring out that her late father's business partner, Ana Miller (Kristin Scott Thomas), is behind the mysterious Trinity organization that is looking to take over the world and is responsible for Richard Croft's death; a game-changing tidbit that opens several sequel possibilities.
