It's only been a couple of weekends but it's already safe to say that Tim Burton's "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice" is one of the biggest box office hits of the year — at least in North America anyhow. The long-awaited sequel to Burton's 1988 classic has been well over three decades in the making. It's crystal clear that everything came together at the right time as audiences have been flocking to theaters to see the Beetlejuice and the Deetz family reunited after all this time. So much so that the sequel is already one of the ten biggest domestic hits of 2024.
"Beetlejuice Beetlejuice" took in an estimated $51.6 million domestically on its second weekend, which was more than enough to top the charts. That represents a 53% drop compared to the film's opening weekend, which was a stellar $111 million, making it one of the biggest openings of 2024 thus far. Reviews were good. Word of mouth has been good.

The success of Minority Report in 2002 was a signifier of the highly profitable creative and business relationship between Tom Cruise, the biggest movie star in Hollywood, and Steven Spielberg, the greatest director the industry has ever known. 3 years later, War of the Worlds proved that theory right when it united the actor-director duo for a live-action adaptation of H.G. Wells’ sci-fi classic.
Unfortunately, the alien invasion movie marked the last time Cruise and Spielberg would ever work together since the actor’s on-air meltdown during the Matt Lauer interview and his couch-jumping proclamation of love on Oprah severed their well-balanced working relationship.

Decades later, as the dust settles and past truths come to light, it seems there was a slight possibility of a third Cruise-Spielberg project that became one of the greatest movies never made.

Franchises are both the lifeblood and bane of Hollywood’s existence. When everything clicks, a series can keep consumers intrigued for years if not decades — James Bond, Batman, Star Wars, Mission: Impossible, Superman. But sooner or later, fatigue sets in and the complaints begin (i.e., what happened to originality?)
The 2024 summer box office was a rare exception. For the first time in recent memory, “franchise” no longer was a dirty word, says one top studio executive. Those big brands helped push year-to-date domestic grosses to more than $5.4 billion as of the weekend of Sept. 6-8, which is still down about 13 percent compared with a year earlier but better than expectations for this point in 2024.
The reversal in fortune began after a rough May that saw The Fall Guy, a potential franchise newbie, spin out at the box office, followed by the blowout of Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga ($172 million...

Netflix released the first half of Emily in Paris‘ fourth season Aug. 15, and as a result got just over half of the tune-in for the show’s last full-season premiere.
The dramedy starring Lily Collins gathered 792 million minutes of viewing in the United States for its premiere week, according to Nielsen’s streaming ratings. That was good for third place among original series and ninth overall, but was also down 43 percent from the 1.39 billion minutes for the first week of season three’s release — which featured all 10 episodes of that installment, as opposed to five this time out.
The previous week’s top two shows, Prison Break and The Umbrella Academy, held their spots for the week of Aug. 12-18 — and their numbers were consistent as well. Prison Break actually ticked up a little to 1.61 billion minutes of viewing (versus 1.6 billion the week before), while The Umbrella Academy (1.39 billion) was...

In its second week on Netflix, Prison Break rocketed to the top of Nielsen’s streaming rankings.
The former Fox series, which also streams on Hulu, was added to Netflix on July 29 and made its streaming chart debut that week. For the week of Aug. 5-11, it more than doubled the previous frame’s viewing time, rising from 758 million to 1.6 billion minutes. (Hulu, incidentally, is developing a new version of Prison Break with Mayans Mc showrunner Elgin James.)
Netflix’s The Umbrella Academy — whose final season premiered Aug. 8 — was the top original series for the week, coming in at 1.46 billion minutes of viewing. That’s a strong showing, but also down a good amount from the 2.45 billion minutes the show recorded the week of its season three premiere in June 2022.

The numbers are in — domestic revenue for the 2024 summer box office hit an estimated $3.67 billion, down 10.3 percent over 2023, according to final numbers issued Tuesday by Comscore. As counterintuitive as it may seem, Hollywood studio executives and theater owners aren’t panicking.
They were experiencing far different emotions at the end of May, the official start of the summer box office. Revenue for the month was down a terrifying 29 percent from the prior year, prompting renewed concern that the theatrical experience might not survive the lasting impact of the pandemic, Hollywood’s historic labor strikes and competition from streaming.
It was because of the strikes that Marvel Studios and Disney weren’t able to open Deadpool & Wolverine at the beginning of May — the threequel was delayed to late July — marking the first time in years that a Marvel superhero pic hasn’t kicked off summer. This year, that job went...

At first glance, the $3.6 billion the studios earned from the summer domestic box office would seem like bad news given that receipts dropped 11% from last summer’s “Barbenheimer”-fueled $4 billion season.
But despite a sluggish start, Disney/Pixar’s “Inside Out 2” set theaters ablaze and helped put last year’s strikes in the rearview mirror. Now the industry is poised to enjoy the kind of consistently high business in the second half of the year that exhibition and studio executives have promised.
“There are very few films where we might ask, ‘What happened here?’” Boxoffice editor Daniel Loria told TheWrap. “All of the major titles that came out this summer either delivered as expected or, like ‘Inside Out 2,’ strongly overperformed, and the one month that was poor business can be attributed to the lack of a major franchise in Marvel that usually starts the summer.”

The Olympics brought in very strong streaming numbers for Peacock during the first full week of the games. For other streamers? Not so much.
No original series or movie made the overall top 10 titles in Nielsen’s streaming rankings for the week of July 29-Aug. 4. That’s a first in the four-year history of the weekly rankings, according to the ratings service. Streaming levels outside of the Olympics “decreased significantly” during the week, Nielsen says.
House of the Dragon, however, continued its strong showing on Max (since the show also airs on HBO, Nielsen considers it an acquired series rather than an original). The Game of Thrones prequel topped the week leading up to its second season finale with 1.31 billion minutes of viewing, up from 1.04 billion a week earlier and its best mark of the season so far.

For the past four years, Chinese audiences haven’t shown much interest in Hollywood movies.
So, the breakout success of Disney and 20th Century’s “Alien: Romulus,” a gory sci-fi thriller that earns its R rating, has been a welcome surprise. The newest chapter in the long-running horror saga has been the rare bright spot among American imports with $82 million and counting in mainland China. It’s expected to reach $114 million (RMB819) by the end of its theatrical run, according to forecast from Chinese ticketing agency Maoyan.
So far, only one other 2024 U.S. title, the Warner Bros. tentpole “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire,” has managed to make a dent on China’s box office charts with $134 million. And in terms of Hollywood wins, those riches come with an asterisk because the monster mashup was produced by Chinese-owned Legendary Entertainment and distributed by the company’s China local unit Legendary East.

It has been a rough few years at the box office, to put it as mildly as one can. The pandemic completely upended the movie business as we know it, with theaters around the world shutting down entirely for months on end. Even after they reopened, the recovery has been much slower than expected. It certainly didn't help that last year's SAG and WGA strikes hugely impacted this year's output from Hollywood as well. It's been one thing after another. Amidst all of this, American studios have had to contend with one big, financially consequential truth: China can no longer be depended on to help goose ticket sales for blockbuster films.
For over a decade before the pandemic hit in 2020, Hollywood studios had been catering to Chinese audiences, even going so far as to self-censor films to help ensure that they could play in the country. At times, that paid off handsomely.

“Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” director Wes Ball peeled back the curtain on Wētā FX‘s Oscar-worthy VFX in “Inside the Lens: The Raw Cut,” a full-length, split-screen comparison between the final cut of the film and a version with unfinished VFX. Featuring optional commentary by Ball, editor Dan Zimmerman, and production VFX supervisor Erik Winquist, “The Raw Cut” appears on the supplemental Blu-ray in the 4K Ultra HD set available now.
This VFX deep dive is a first for the “Apes” franchise (which has yet to win the coveted VFX Oscar). Ball (“The Maze Runner”) followed Matt Reeves (“The Batman”) with a post-Caesar (Andy Serkis) reboot, some 300 years later when apes rule the planet. “Kingdom” revolves around chimp teenager Noa (Owen Teague), forced to rescue his Eagle Clan (named for bonding with the majestic bird) from the evil clutches of militant chimp ruler Proximus Caesar (Kevin Durand). Disney didn't exactly have a banner year (by Disney standards anyhow) in 2023. None of the studio's films topped $1 billion last year which, again, is not the marker for success. However, for a studio with as many reliable franchises as Disney has, it's notable, particularly when movies like "The Marvels" and "Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny" flopped so badly. In any event, the Mouse House is having a real bounce-back year in 2024, with "Inside Out 2" literally ranking as one of the biggest movies of all-time at this point. Yet, oddly enough, it's R-rated movies that are truly leading the way for the traditionally family-friendly company at the moment.
This past weekend, Disney held the number one and number two spots at the box office, with "Deadpool & Wolverine" reclaiming the top spot in its fifth weekend with $18.3 million. Meanwhile, last weekend's champion "Alien: Romulus" landed at number two with $16.2 million.

The popular videogame Ruiner is the latest title to get turned into a film, with Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes' Wes Ball directing.
There’s little doubt that videogame to film adaptations are back on the Hollywood radar. Sony has created a whole division of its film studio to adapting its popular library of PlayStation games – both past and present – into big, crowd-pleasing movies. Elsewhere, Nintendo saw huge success last year with the release of The Super Mario Bros Movie.
Even Sega is getting in on the act: a report surfaced the other day that the former giant of the games industry was looking to grab yet another 1990s title, Eternal Champions, and turn it into a film. The company is also looking to make a Golden Axe animated series, and hopes to make other games based on its old IPs following the success of the Sonic The Hedgehog movies.

For the sixth straight Monday, a new and different film is #1 on VOD at both iTunes and Fandango. “Twisters” (Universal), which grossed almost $10 million in theaters last weekend, is the latest summer hit to reach home viewing.
By design or accident, studios have spaced out their releases so every week brings a new top film. Since the VOD debut of “Civil War” back in late May-early June, no film has enjoyed more than a week as #1 on VOD.
As always, the timing for PVOD debuts don’t align with theatrical runs; “Twisters” and “Despicable Me 2” were released later than “Inside Out 2.” That’s no surprise — Universal is usually the quickest to go to PVOD; Disney tested the waters with streaming exclusives and same-day PVOD but now maintains the longest windows. “Inside Out 2” will hit PVOD after its 10th weekend, while it’s still in the theatrical top...

When Disney acquired 20th Century Fox in 2019 in one of the biggest media takeovers of all time, the House of Mouse absorbed its film slate — and promptly had to slog through an endless series of commercial duds.
Movies like “X-Men” spinoffs “Dark Phoenix” and “New Mutants,” Brad Pitt’s astronaut drama “Ad Astra,” buddy comedy “Stuber,” Harrison Ford-led canine adventure “The Call of the Wild” and animated pigeon comedy “Spies in Disguise” were rejected by audiences and sputtered at the box office. Worse, they didn’t exactly instill confidence in the film assets that resulted from the $71.3 billion mega-merger.
“Those Fox titles that were part of the deal but weren’t made by Disney seemed like they were orphaned,” says senior Comscore analyst Paul Dergarabedian. “With any merger, there are going to be growing pains. And this is a slow-moving business.”

These ratings might not be quite as unimpeachable as Nielsen ratings, but they still give us a good idea of what people are watching. An unexpectedly strong August continues with the usual (Disney films lead the way) and the unusual (both are R-rated). They’re also a testament to M&a strategy: Both are franchises that Disney acquired from 20th Century-Fox.
Nearly a half century after the Ridley Scott original, “Alien: Romulus” opened at #1 with $41.5 million, and “Deadpool & Wolverine” is #2 with $29 million. Both characters were assets Disney acquired in its $71.8 billion 2019 takeover of the Hollywood legacy studio, Fox.
That synergy extends to “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes,” the sixth-biggest film of this summer. Throw in “The First Omen” and a reissue of “The Phantom Menace,” and Fox content has provided $825 million of Disney’s $1.467 billion industry-leading gross so far this year.
With three films in the top 10 (#8 is “Inside Out” from Pixar with its $642 million to date) and the distributor represents nearly 54 percent of the weekend’s gross. Its return to dominance...

Disney/20th Century’s “Alien: Romulus” is keeping the August box office strong with a $41.5 million opening weekend from 3,885 theaters, topping the $36.1 million opening of its 2017 Fox-distributed predecessor, “Alien: Covenant.”
That film, directed by series creator Ridley Scott, received mixed-to-positive reviews from critics and longtime fans, but Fede Álvarez’s latest installment has earned a strong reception with a B+ on CinemaScore to go with Rotten Tomatoes scores of 81% from critics and 87% audience.
“Alien: Romulus” is also seeing strong performance overseas with $66.7 million grossed internationally, led by a stronger-than-expected $25.7 million from China with No. 1 openings in Italy, Spain, the United Kingdom and Korea. In like-for-like markets, the film is 47% ahead of “A Quiet Place: Day One” as its global start reaches $108.2 million.

“Alien: Romulus” ripped into the domestic box office with $41.5 million, marking the second-highest start in the long-running “Alien” franchise. Those ticket sales were enough for the newest chapter in Disney and 20th Century’s sci-fi horror saga to end the three-week reign of “Deadpool & Wolverine,” which just overtook “Joker” as the highest-grossing R-rated movie in history with $1.14 billion.
These achievements are capping off Disney’s stellar summer streak, which ignited with “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” (May’s highest grossing movie with $397 million) and continued through “Inside Out 2” (June’s highest grossing movie with $1.597 billion) and “Deadpool & Wolverine” (July’s highest grossing movie with $1.14 billion). The studio earlier this month became the first of 2024 to surpass $3 billion in worldwide ticket sales and should continue to pad that total with “Moana 2” (Nov. 27) and “Mufasa: The Lion King” (Dec. 20) on the calendar through the year’s end.

The summer movie season is now all but over, the tea leaves are in, and everyone in the industry is working hard to read them. Sizing up the future of movies, should we be hopeful? Fearful? Somewhere in between?
To recap the signs: There were many big hits this summer, and that’s reason to celebrate. News flash: People still like to go to the movies!
But…the total box-office receipts lagged behind those of 2023, so there’s reason to be wary. But…the impact of the strike still registered this summer in a profound way, since there wasn’t enough product to satisfy demand. That’s good news. It means that the demand is there, and that the situation can be rectified in 2025.
And yet, if you stand back and look at the great big pie chart of moviegoing, there is still a major piece missing.
Back in the ’90s,...

What can we find at the end of the dragon’s tail? More dragons, apparently. After airing its season 2 finale on August 4, “House of the Dragon” was still the most-watched streaming program on the Samba TV Weekly Wrap Report for the week of Aug. 5-11, as viewers caught up on the season.
Even in a week during which it did not release a new episode, “Dragon” bested this week’s big streaming series debut, “The Umbrella Academy” Season 4. Netflix added the six-episode season on Aug. 8 and drew enough households to place the series at No. 6 this week. The first episode of Season 4 was seen by 559,000 U.S. households during the first four days it was available.
Oddly, “Umbrella Academy” wasn’t the most noteworthy addition to the Netflix library. Tom Cruise’s Jack Reacher films were recently added to the streamer and made the Top 10 this week. “Jack Reacher: Never Go Back,...

Alien: Romulus might be pumping some fresh blood into the franchise. Evil Dead‘s Fede Álvarez’s entry is collecting hype and showcases an 82% on Rotten Tomatoes with an 88% audience score. In the review from our Eic Chris Bumbray, he stated, “These added-on elements make Alien: Romulus more of a mixed bag than you’d think, but I hesitate to put any of the blame on Fede Alvarez. When he’s allowed to do his own thing, which seems to be the case for about three-quarters of the movie, it’s one of the best Alien movies ever. But, when he’s shoehorned in a bunch of tacked-on mythology, it starts to suffer. At any rate, it’s probably still the third-best movie of the franchise, and hopefully, it will lead to more films set in this world by Alvarez, who seems like a natural successor to Ridley Scott and...

20th Century’s “Alien: Romulus” is helping the August box office stay strong with $6.5 million grossed from 3,885 theaters in Thursday previews.
That result tops the $4.2 million preview total that the last film in the storied horror series, “Alien: Covenant,” earned in 2017. The film had projections for a $30 million-plus opening, but based on Thursday preview comps is very likely to top $40 million.
Among fellow summer 2024 releases, “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” and “Bad Boys: Ride or Die” opened to similar preview totals with $6.6 million and $6.1 million respectively, and both cleared $50 million in their opening weekends. “Alien: Romulus” may not get there due to its gory, chestbursting, R-rated nature, but it is still looking like it will earn a healthy start against its $80 million budget that can top the $36 million start of “Covenant.”
Elsewhere, Sony’s “It Ends With Us,” made $4.9 million on Thursday, edging out Marvel Studios’ “Deadpool & Wolverine” with $4.5 million.

“Alien: Romulus,” the latest chapter in a sci-fi and horror saga that taught audiences that “in space, no one can hear you scream,” is making some noise at the box office. The film earned a solid $6.5 million in Thursday previews and is expected to earn $28 million to $38 million in its first weekend of release. However, some rivals and independent tracking services believe that Disney and 20th Century, the studios behind the film, are being conservative in their estimates. They expect “Alien: Romulus” to debut between $40 million or $50 million.
The Thursday numbers certainly suggest that the final results will be on the higher end of projections. They compare favorably with other recent horror-tinged releases such as “A Quiet Place: Day One,” which earned $6.7 million in previews before ending its opening weekend with $52 million in the bank, or “Nope,” which netted $6.4 million before premiering to $44 million in its first weekend.

Honestly, your guess is as good as mine why this summer has been so littered with monkeys and apes, going back to Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes in May, stretching through the second season of Hulu’s Hit-Monkey and into the August rush of Apple TV+’s Bad Monkey, Netflix’s Secret Lives of Orangutans and now HBO’s Chimp Crazy.
Is there a sense that we’re on the brink of postapocalyptic decay and we’re prepping for new simian overlords? Did the protracted anxiety of last summer’s dual entertainment industry strikes leave creatives feeling generally dehumanized? Or is it less specific and more general? Are monkeys just too cute for words and do we just want to get squishy with their adorable little almost-human faces and dress them up in cute outfits and take them out to the grocery store in strollers and make one...

After a steady takeoff in May with “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes,” Disney has been flying high at the box office as the first studio with back-to-back $1 billion hits with “Inside Out 2” and “Deadpool & Wolverine.” Now it’s looking for a smooth landing with 20th Century’s “Alien: Romulus.”
Set between the first two — and most popular — installments of the legendary horror franchise, “Romulus” sees the “Alien” series entrusted to “Evil Dead” and “Don’t Breathe” director Fede Alvarez, who has made it a point to show off his film’s use of practical sets and effects wherever possible.
That approach came with a reported production budget of $80 million before marketing. That’s lower than the $97 million for Ridley Scott’s “Alien: Covenant,” which grossed $74.2 million domestic and $240 million worldwide. If “Romulus” can match that record, it will be a modest win for Disney after a resurgent summer.
