“Saturday Night Live Weekend Update” hosts Colin Jost and Michael Che minced no words on Saturday night while commenting on Ye (aka Kanye West) and Diddy’s respective recent headlines.
Referring to a recently filed lawsuit by former Ye employee Trevor Phillips — who accused the musician of anti-Black racism, homophobic and antisemitic outbursts in a lawsuit filed on Tuesday — Che noted, “In a lawsuit against Ye, a former employee claims that Ye compared himself to Hitler, minus the gas chambers.”
Che then quipped, “I, for one, am shocked to hear that Ye believes in the Holocaust.”
Moving on to another embroiled hip-hop star, Colin Jost noted an embarassing moment in a “Live with Kelly & Mark” repeat that aired this past week referencing Diddy — taped long before the current investigation over the mogul’s alleged wrongdoings.

A star-studded group of veteran “Saturday Night Live” guest hosts were on hand this evening to welcome Kristen Wiig into the “Five-Timers Club.” But much to Wiig’s chagrin, most of them haven’t matched her feat of actually hosting “SNL” five times.
The former “Saturday Night Live” cast member made her fifth appearance as host — having previously hit the stage in 2013, 2016 and twice in 2020.
The stolen “SNL” valor actually began with a legit five-timer: Paul Rudd, on hand to welcome her from the audience..
“As a former cast member, it is very special,” Wiig said. “I’m really excited about getting my jacket tonight… they don’t just hand the jackets off to anyone.”
Well, not quite. Soon more stars came out: Matt Damon, Jon Hamm, Martin Short, Will Forte, Fred Armisen, Martin Short and Ryan Gosling. None of whom haven actually hosted five times yet.

It's safe to say the early aughts WB series "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" was a smash hit — among other accolades, it produced a five-season spin-off, "Angel," and launched several storied careers, including that of its controversial creator, Joss Whedon. A few of the "Buffy" characters returned in "Angel" after departing from "Buffy," including the British Watcher Wesley and Sunnydale High's resident mean girl Cordelia. Even Spike, who was killed off in the "Buffy" series finale, returned for the final season of the spin-off. However, not all of the cast members were so keen on reprising their roles after the original series ended.
Emma Caulfield stars in "Buffy" as the minor character Anya, a wish-granting vengeance demon who is turned back into a human and forced to attend high school where she falls in love with Buffy's hapless human sidekick, Xander. She became a recurring character in season 3 before falling into...

Jac Schaeffer, a name well-known in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), is set to direct the opening episode of the highly anticipated series ‘Agatha: Darkhold Diaries.’ This series, a spin-off from the popular ‘WandaVision,’ is expected to hit Disney+ in late 2024. Schaeffer, who has already left her mark with projects like ‘WandaVision’ and ‘Black Widow,’ is bringing her unique storytelling to this new venture.
‘Agatha: Darkhold Diaries’ revolves around the character Agatha Harkness, played by Kathryn Hahn, who was first introduced in ‘WandaVision.’ The series picks up with Harkness finding herself powerless and seeking help from unlikely allies to regain her former powers. Joining Hahn in the cast are Aubrey Plaza, Joe Locke, Patti LuPone, Sasheer Zamata, Ali Ahn, Debra Jo Rupp, and Miles Gutierrez-Riley. The show promises a mix of mystery, magic, and character-driven drama.

This week’s Saturday Night Live cold open gave a musical send-off to expelled congressman George Santos.
Before Bowen Yang’s Santos made his way over to a piano to perform a parody of “Candle in the Wind,” he took questions from the media regarding his removal from the U.S. House of Representatives.
“This entire country has been bullying me just because I am a proud gay thief,” Yang’s Santos initially says. “But what else is new? America hates to see a Latina queen winning since the day I was elected. It’s been a witch hunt but if I’m guilty of anything, it’s for loving too much/fraud.”
When one of the reporters asked him how he felt about being the sixth House member in history to be expelled by his colleagues, Yang’s Santos responded, “You want me to say that I lost? That I’m humiliated?...

The first Marvel / Disney+ series WandaVision is getting a collector’s edition Blu-ray release tomorrow (you can order a copy Here) – and apparently a featurette that offers a behind-the-scenes look at the spin-off / follow-up Agatha: Darkhold Diaries (which was formerly known as Agatha: House of Harkness and then Agatha: Coven of Chaos) is included in the extras! Agatha isn’t expected to start streaming on the Disney+ service until the early fall of 2024 – possibly on September 19, 2024 – so this featurette gets the marketing started quite early.
Some fans have already received their WandaVision Blu-rays and decided to share the featurette on X:

A “WandaVision” spinoff starring Kathryn Hahn is in development at Disney Plus from Marvel Studios, Variety has learned exclusively from sources.
Hahn would reprise the role of Agatha Harkness in the series, which is described by sources as a dark comedy, though exact plot details remain under wraps. “WandaVision” head writer Jac Schaeffer would serve as the writer and executive producer on the project. Should the spinoff go forward, it would be the first project Schaeffer has set up with Marvel since she signed an overall deal with them and 20th Television in May.
As with all projects in development, Marvel Studios is staying mum on this one. Reps for Schaeffer and Hahn did not immediately respond to Variety‘s request for comment.
In “WandaVision,” Hahn started out playing the role of Agnes, Wanda and Vision’s nosy neighbor, before it was revealed she was in fact Agatha, a powerful witch.

“WandaVision,” like most stories in the Marvel universe, came flying out of the brain of Marvel czar Kevin Feige, arguably the most successful producer in the history of Hollywood. He believes in letting audiences spend more time with characters that they love and getting them to laugh along with them, as well. He also likes to change things up with surprising shifts in tone by bringing in talented film creatives — from James Gunn and Taika Waititi to Cate Shortland — to work with his more experienced team led by Marvel executive producers Louis Esposito and Victoria Alonso.
Elizabeth Olsen first heard about “WandaVision” in January 2018, when she was finishing up filming “Avengers: Endgame.” Her contract was up after that movie, and Feige brought her in for a meeting. “I thought it was a conversation about my potential future,” she said on the phone. “I didn’t realize there was a plan.

When the Covid-19 pandemic hit, Jac Schaeffer was in Atlanta filming her Disney Plus limited series “WandaVision.” She stayed down South for a little while but then, instead of trekking cross-country to her home base in Los Angeles, she went up the East Coast to Cape Cod, where her family keeps a cottage. “It’s a place I’ve come my whole life, and now it’s super important to my family because it was where we were safe during the really heavy Covid times,” she says. Even while surrounded by extended family there, she can carve out writing space for herself in an office above the kitchen. She admits there have been “many Zoom meetings where my kids run through” on their way to or from the stairs that lead to the kitchen, but there is also something calming about the environment too: “The best part for me — for...

The Devil Is a Part-Timer is a series that started up in 2011. As a result, it predates the isekai boom that has overtaken anime and anime-adjacent media in recent times. However, a case can be made that The Devil Is a Part-Timer is a reverse-isekai. After all, it is focused on a number of characters from a fantasy-themed world that have been transported to the real world rather than the reverse. For those who are curious, the titular character was the Demon Lord of his homeworld. He was very successful until he encountered the hero Emilia and her companions,

Head writer and producer Jac Schaeffer wanted to give audiences a new depiction of Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen). The character who has the ability to manipulate reality itself has been showcased as a villain, a woman in love, and grief-stricken. For Schaeffer, she wanted to give audiences a reason to love the character, not fear her.
“We’ve seen her big power — the head tilt that scares everyone and is so amazing,” Schaeffer told IndieWire. “We haven’t really seen her joy. We’ve never had an opportunity to see her be funny and to see her be in mundane circumstances.” Schaeffer’s committed to turning Wanda into a fully-realized woman, on par with the women she’s written in features like “Timer” and “The Hustle.”

“Black Widow” writer Jac Schaeffer first burst on the scene with 2009’s charming, indie sci-fi rom-com “TiMER,” which she wrote and directed, but she’s now ready to take on the big leagues with her latest Marvel script. Persistence pays off. Scarlett Johansson has been pitching a Black Widow standalone film for years, and on Wednesday, multiple outlets said screenwriter Jac Schaeffer has been hired to pen a script for the project. Nothing is set in stone, as the Marvel Studios movie is still in early development. Schaeffer wrote the script for Nasty Woman, a Dirty Rotten Scoundrels remake starring Anne Hathaway and Rebel Wilson. She previously wrote and directed the romantic sci-fi film TiMER. Johansson first appeared onscreen as Natasha Romanoff (a.k.a. Black Widow) in 2010's Iron Man 2, opposite Robert Downey Jr. The actress has reprised her role in four follow-up films, and she had an un-credited cameo in 2017's Thor:...

Black Widow is a name with a notable legacy within Marvel comic book lore. Many individuals have carried that moniker, including Claire Voyant – one of the earliest costumed, super-powered women to appear in comics. While audiences today associate the name with a cat-suited Scarlett Johansson, Black Widow has also been the name of not only a mystical being possessed by Satan, but also a Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. who was the ex-wife of Nick Fury. She’s even been a serial killer with cannibalistic tendencies.
But, for fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe – and indeed, comic book movie fans everywhere – the version of Black Widow we see on the big screen today has become a symbol of female determination and capability. Within the juggernaut franchise, through films of varying quality, she’s evolved into a complex character, whose loyalty and choices can determine the outcome of the fiercest battles.

As with any actor whose work I love, there are films that stand out as particularly great in the career of Steve Martin, and one of those films is Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. There are many great things about Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. Michael Caine is a perfect foil for Martin, whose work as nascent con man Freddy Benson is inspired. Frank Oz does a terrific job of creating this romantic, beautiful French fantasyland where people are going to believe the incredible lies told by Freddy and Caine’s master bullshit artist Lawrence Jamieson. Glenne Headly gives one of her most nimble performances as Janet Colgate, the poor defenseless tourist who ends up targeted by Freddy and Lawrence. Ian McDiarmid, best known to the fanboy nation as Emperor Palpatine, is dry and deadly as Arthur, Lawrence’s manservant. Miles Goodman’s score is terrific, one of the great comedy scores of the ‘80s,...

There's a British horror-comedy from 2009 called "Doghouse," written by Dan Schaffer and directed by Jake West. In it, a group of guys trying to help a friend deal with his divorce all go to a small village where a virus has turned every single woman into a man-eating monster. Literally. The movie's not quite the misogynistic nightmare that sounds like, but it also isn't quite smart enough to be the movie that it wanted to be, a cutting piece about the culture war between the genders. Well, it looks like Anne Hathaway's going to get a shot at trying to make the good version of the film now thanks to the news that "The Shower" is going to be made. One of the scripts from last year's Black List, written by Jac Schaeffer, "The Shower" is about a group of women who get together for a baby shower, only...

From writer/director Max Joseph, here’s a first look at the trailer for We Are Your Friends starring Zac Efron, Emily Ratajkowski and Wes Bentley.
The film marks Max Joseph’s (MTV’s “Catfish: The TV Show”) feature film directorial debut.
We Are Your Friends is about what it takes to find your voice. Set in the world of electronic music and Hollywood nightlife, an aspiring 23-year-old DJ named Cole (Efron) spends his days scheming with his childhood friends and his nights working on the one track that will set the world on fire. All of this changes when he meets a charismatic but damaged older DJ named James (Bentley), who takes him under his wing. Things get complicated, however, when Cole starts falling for James’ much younger girlfriend, Sophie (Ratajkowski). With Cole’s forbidden relationship intensifying and his friendships unraveling, he must choose between love, loyalty, and the future he is destined for.

A group of reunited college friends hear it through the grapevine in The Big Chill.
The 1983 comedy-drama The Big Chill focuses on a group of thirty-somethings who reunite for the funeral of one of their friends and end up spending a weekend together, reminiscing about their shared pasts as children of the sixties and confronting the uncertainty of their lives as adults of the eighties.
Poignant and warmly humorous in equal measure, this baby boomer milestone made a star of writer-director Lawrence Kasdan (Body Heat) and is perhaps the decade’s defining ensemble film, featuring memorable performances by Tom Berenger (Inception), Glenn Close (Fatal Attraction), Jeff Goldblum (Morning Glory), William Hurt (Broadcast News), Kevin Kline (Queen to Play), Mary Kay Place (Being John Malkovich), Meg Tilly (Agnes of God), and JoBeth Williams (Timer).

Each week within this column we strive to pair the latest in theatrical releases to worthwhile titles currently available on Netflix Instant Watch. This week we offer alternatives to Puss in Boots, The Rum Diary and In Time.
This Friday a pop star-turned-action star battles time and its wealthy rulers, while a costumed cat seeks a sky-high dream and a drunken Lothario goes abroad for romance and rum. But if these flicks cannot quench your thirst for fractured fairy tales, sci-fi thrills and angst-ridden anti-heroes, we’ve got you covered with a tantalizing selection of choice movies available online.
Before he was swashbuckling alongside Shrek, this ferocious feline (Antonio Banderas) was crossing swords with the cat burglar Kitty Softpaws (Salma Hayek), stealing magic beans from the gruff outlaws Jack & Jill (Billy Bob Thorton & Amy Sedaris) and teaming up with the crafty criminal mind Humpty Dumpty (Zach Galifianakis). Since Friday, I have been raving to people about Rabies (review here), which is my favorite film of the Tribeca Film Festival so far. I.ve also been telling everyone how it is available to watch for free as part of the festival.s online screening room. Pretty much no one knew what I was talking about. It occurred to me that I should write a post to explain a little bit about Tribeca.s online festival and how you can watch some great indie films for free.
By going to http://www.tribecafilm.com/tribecaonline you can get all the info. Basically you have to sign up for a free Tribeca film account and then reserve a virtual seat for one of the online screenings. Each of the films have set days when they are streaming and you should have 24 hours for each to check in and watch the film on those days.

Remember a few years ago when we reported on Jason Sudeikis planning a flick called A Good Old Fashioned Orgy? Well, we do. Why? Because Publisher-in-Chief Neil Miller forces us to memorize the site and read it to him as he falls asleep. It doesn’t ever come in handy until a day like today. A bit over two years later, Sony and Samuel Goldwyn have teamed to snag Us distribution rights for the movie. That gets this story of one final party (which Sudeikis’s character hopes to turn into a giant orgy) one step closer to getting made. Sudeikis is a great, underrated talent from an otherwise dreary SNL line-up. Plus, according to The Hollywood Reporter, he’ll be joined by Leslie Bibb, Will Forte, Lake Bell, Martin Starr (Bill!), Nick Kroll, Lindsay Sloane (The Other Guys), Lucy Punch (Dinner For Schmucks), Michelle Borth (TiMER), and David Koechner. This...

Summary: First-time writer-director weds fatalism and hope in cautionary tale about knowing when you'll meet your soulmate.
TiMER looks at a world where people have literal timers implanted in their wrists that tell them when they will meet their soulmates, be it days or years. I've wanted to see Jac Schaeffer's plucky film since it premiered at the 2009 Tribeca Film Festival, but somehow it couldn't find a distributor, and I thought I'd always be without this bittersweet tale. Then the fest introduced this year's "Tribeca Film" line-up of past and present movies you can watch on On Demand--and TiMER is one of 'em.

Due to Comic-Con and, frankly, the economy, "Crazy Sexy Geeks: The Series" has been on hiatus for a short while. But thanks to a few fan donations, the show is coming back with new episodes.
These episodes will cover such topics as "gays in mainstream comics", more on "women superheroes", a look at "what you should be reading" featuring author Victoria Laurie and comic writer Jimmy Palmiotti, and chats with celebrities such as Paul Wesley of "The Vampire Diaries" and Emma Caulfield of the recent movie Timer and "Buffy the Vampire Slayer."
Tim Gunn has also promised to come back for further fashion discussions on superheroes, due to the high positive response of his last visit to the show that got rave reviews from many, including NPR. If you didn't catch that special two-part discussion on the fashion of Superman, Robin, the Hulk, Power Girl, Black Canary, Catwoman and others,...

TiMER is one of the many low-budget indie flicks that make the film festival rounds but never pick up any real distribution. In the olden days, way back in 2008, such a movie would be completely forgotten. But that was before Netflix Instant, where movies without distribution can be discovered at virtually no cost.
However, I can see why a distributor wouldn't touch the movie: It doesn't have any marketable star power -- "Buffy the Vampire Slayer's" Emma Caulfield (she was Anya) is the only recognizable actor -- and on paper, the idea of a romantic comedy blending with the concepts of Philip K. Dick is likely to alienate sci-fi and romantic comedy fans alike.
It's too bad, because while the sci-fi elements in TiMER might not appeal to the average sci-fi enthusiast, they're definitely not heavy enough to alienate fans of relationship comedies. More to the point: I thought...

37-year-old Emma Caulfield seems like such a blond SoCal gal. Hailing from San Diego, she moved to Los Angeles to pursue an acting career, and got her start in television playing Susan Keats, a love interest on the series Beverly Hills, 90210. That led her to Buffy The Vampire Slayer and her key role as ex-demon Anya. But she's admittedly something of a fan geek, a real devotee of sci-fi movies and TV series. So taking on the lead role of Oona in the near-future set TiMER, not only made sense to her, it was a role that stirred all her fan juices as well. Based on the premise that a device can be made to biologically find the unique link between soul mates, it's meant to take the guesswork out of romance and dating. But the device is not...

Emma Caulfield wants a divorce from her husband, Cornelius Grobbelaar
After being married for almost four years, the "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" star filed divorce documents last week in Los Angeles Superior Court citing "conflicting differences."
The odd thing is that The Dish Rag spoke exclusively with Emma less than a month ago about love, marriage and finding her one and only, which isn't really nosy because it related to the theme of her new film, "Timer," about a futuristic device -- like wristwatch -- that sounds an alarm when you meet "the one".
In our video chat, she spoke about meeting her husband and how it was "something" at first sight and said she was happily married. They are both Aries. She also mentioned that they got married only eight weeks after they met and remarked how incredibly "hot" he is and how they were both "total nerds." She...

"Buffy the Vampire Slayer" star Nicholas Brendon has checked into rehab.
Brendon reportedly blames alcohol and the sleeping pill for his March 17 arrest, when he got into a fight with cops and got himself seriously tased and booked.
"I was in treatment in 2005 and unfortunately I had a relapse. In the back of my mind, I always knew I had a problem but it became clear to me when I got arrested," he says, according to Radaronline.
The actor was charged with felony vandalism and released on $20,000 bail. Then he checked himself in the Soba Recovery Center in Malibu. He says he feels grateful for this second chance and some much needed financial advice.
"I'm feeling lucky because alcoholism effected [sic] my money management decisions and they are helping me," he says. Another upside? Sober acting classes. Seems the rehab also offers "acting classes that focus on recovery."

There’s someone out there for everyone, right? What if, just what if, that might not be your case? That’s the major plot point for Jac Schaeffer’s romantic comedy, Timer. In the film, people start purchasing this thing for their wrist called “TiMER,” which tells you the exact countdown for when you’ll meet your true love. When Oona O’Leary (Emma Caulfield, Buffy the Vampire Slayer) gets one of her own, the TiMER shows blank. She begins the dating process but quickly writes off men whose TiMERs clearly aren’t ticking for her. This begs the question – will she ever find true love?

Low budget indie film: yay!
Romantic comedy: meh.
Subtle science fiction plot device: yay!
Romantic comedy: meh.
Former "Buffy" actress: yay!
Romantic comedy: meh.
I am very conflicted about TiMER. First of all, it's a romantic comedy, which counts as at least nine strikes against it. Yes, if a romantic comedy walks up to the plate, the inning is already over. Blame Dustin. He sent me to When in Rome and She's Out of His League within a few weeks of each other. Now I'm not snarky about romantic comedies, I actually bleed from the eyes when I see trade news about them. Plus, that spelling of the title? Unless you're Scottish or Irish you don't get to do the whole "ooh look at me, my second letter isn't capitalized but the third is!" That's not a title, that's capslock and a typo.
But putting aside overwhelming but shallow biases,...

"Buffy and the Vampire" star Emma Caulfield thinks "Twilight's" pale tousled British lad Robert Pattinson is ridiculously hot.
"He's painfully good-looking, a flawless-looking individual," she told The Dish Rag during our chat last week. "And I've heard him being interviewed and he's pretty self-effacing, which makes him all the more charming."
She also talks about the impact of "Twilight" precursor "Buffy" on her life and career, her love for sci-fi, "Avatar" and "Battlestar Galactica," being leery to see "Caprica," her personal "Lost" theories, and her take on the "Twilight Saga," as someone who knows a little something about vampires.
"I think I would be obsessed [with 'Twilight'] if I was 13," Emma admits. "You can't really go wrong with vampire stories because they are inherently interesting."

I have a small window of time in Tribeca duties so I must wrap the unfortunately brief Nashville Film Festival coverage.
New Directors Competition
This is the jury that I served on along with Lou Harry A&E editor of the Indianapolis Business Journal and actor Brian O’Halloran who you’ll remember from Clerks. It's interesting to watch so many debut features back to back because patterns do emerge in regards to strengths and weaknesses within first efforts. The jury discussions were yet another reminder – as if I needed one covering the Oscars so closely each year – that one man’s treasure is another man’s… anyway, the discussions were lively and fun but so much disagreement! We ended up not spreading the wealth much because we were very divided about our slate of films and even the individual achievements within the films. Our...

Forget Match.com. And no more single bars. An unusually intelligent new rom-com "Timer" has a better idea. The film is set in an alternate version of La, in a time when people get timers implanted in their arms that will beep when they lock eyes with their true love.
