Mumbai, Nov 20: Divya Dutta is one such actress who has managed not to do stereotyped roles in movies. When she began her career, whatever she was offered, she used to accept. But soon after she began breaking rules of the industry, she was not a typical actress. She did a variety of roles, and did not live by the rule that one should build up an image to stay in the industry. She does not have any objections to play supporting roles. She was seen in the role of best friend in "Veer Zaara".
Divya played the lead in "Welcome to Sajjanpur" and played an important role in "Delhi 6". Recently she acted in "Heroine" where she was seen in a serious.

Considered one of the founders of India’s ‘New Wave’, Benegal began his film career in the 1970s. From then to this day, his work has successfully trod the line between Bollywood and art cinema.
The Benegal weekend at BFI will present screenings of two of the director’s masterpieces: Bhumika (The Role, 1977) and Junoon (Obsession, 1978). Based on a true story, Bhumika follows the turbulent life of a Bollywood film actress. Junoon is a tale of love between coloniser and colonised during the 1857 rebellion, adapted from Ruskin Bond’s novel A Flight of Pigeons. On both days, Benegal will be present at the BFI, where he will accept an award from the South Asian Cinema Foundation (Sacf) and give a masterclass on the making of Bhumika.

Well Done AbbaReliance Big Home, Rs 299Rating: *1/2 There was a time Shyam Benegal used to fire up his hero or heroine. It used to spur them to fight the system — whether patriarchy (Bhumika), feudalism (Ankur) or social hypocrisy (Mandi). Now, at 76, Benegal perhaps sees the systemic flaws as a grand farce. His heroes — whether it’s Mahadev of Welcome to Sajjanpur or Armaan Ali of Well Done Abba — try to beat the system with its own flaws, with satire by their side and uncharacteristic music on their lips. Armaan, an unlettered driver working in Mumbai, gets home ...

As BollySpice had reported earlier, Sid had ‘tweeted’ that his next hindi movie will be announced soon and insiders believe that it most probably is with Benegal. Benegal, who last gave us the lovely Welcome To Sajjanpur, may very well come up with a gem this time as well.

Drawn from the innermost recesses of its extraordinarily versatile, profound and prolific creator's mind, somewhat like the water that emerges from Boman Irani's well at the end of this delicately-drawn satire on babu-giri and redtapism, Well Done Abba is a little sparkling gem of a film.
Its humour, warmth and tenderness are not as easily obtainable as in Benegal's last comedy Welcome To Sajjanpur, which was far more readily and immediately engaging.
Well Done Abba takes longer to settle and sink into our satiated sensibilities. Long parts of the film describing the Hyderabadi protagonist Armaan Ali's (Boman Irani) close encounters with babu-giri and the bewildering maze of the bureaucracy (somewhat like Pankaj Kapoor in the serial Office Office) are done with a sense of insouciant indulgence that takes the bite away from the cruelty of watching a man run from one musty office to another, trying to get a...

Well Done Abba has turned out to be a sort of a tragedy. Yes, it’s a satirical take on our system, more particularly how government schemes actually become cash cows for corrupt officials while the targeted beneficiaries – the common man – remain as poorly off as ever. It even raises occasional laughs, if not guffaws, through its ironic representation of all the loopholes in the system that are exploited to the hilt by those who are part of it. The victim being, the common man, in this case Armaan Ali of Chikkatpally near Hyderabad, who ekes out a living by driving the luxurious car of a well-off businessman in Mumbai and has a perky daughter back home to look after. With a gamut of characters that reflect the rot in the system in the backdrop of the growing lack of access to water across the nation, Well Done Abba,...

A few years back, when we had spoken to the master director, Shyam Benegal (around the time his Bose released), he was all praise for commercial cinema and its stars, despite him not exactly belonging to that branch of cinema. He had told us that he admired stars like Amitabh Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan, who he felt were charismatic actors who could lift any project. However, with Welcome To Sajjanpur Shyam ji chartered out his new brand of middle cinema, which he is continuin...

The promos of Well Done Abba have the feel-good factor and are reminiscent of your last film, Welcome To Sajjanpur. The only thing common to both films are that they are comedies. Well Done Abba is a political satire on well-meaning social legislations to help those below the poverty line. Many of these schemes turn out to be scams. Isn’t it an adapatation of a novel? It’s been adapted from two short stories, Narsaiyyan Ki Bavdi and Phulwa Ka Pul. I’ve also taken elements from Jayant Kriplani’s script. In the past, we’ve seen writers haggle for credit, Kamlesh Pandey and ...

Recently whilst actress Amrita Rao was posing for PETA, her shoot was disrupted and prolonged due to political party activists who stormed onto the sets. They were misinformed that Amrita was posing in her bare essentials and much to their surprise Amrita was decently dressed. There also seemed to be an identity crisis as they thought it was Amrita Arora, known to be sexy, who was shooting and all the more felt the shoot would be saucy. However once they saw seedhi saadhi Rao, they realized their mistake and profusely apologized by telling her how they loved her in Vivaah and Welcome To Sajjanpur and wanted to see more of her. Amrita being the sweet girl next door that she is, ensured that her driver got them lunch from an Udipi joint close-by and she sweetly autographed their hands. In fact, one of the political party activists made a call...

After playing country girls in movies such as Welcome to Sajjanpur and Vivaah, Amrita Rao glammed up and was noticed by many doing sexy item numbers in movies like Shortkut: The Con is On and Life Partner. She says she's happy to do both: "I'd still love to play characters like Poonam of Vivaah or Kamla in Welcome to Sajjanpur, but I have enjoyed doing those dance numbers so much that I think, they are fun too," she confirms, "So, I am game for both."

Heaping praise on his lead actress Minissha Lamba, Shyam Benegal hopes that his new movie Well Done Abba will bring her the attention he feels she deserves. "Minnisha will be seen in something very different from what she has done till now," he says, "I hope with Well Done Abba she gets the appreciation she deserves. She is an exceptionally fine actress and I feel that she has not got her due in the industry." Well Done Abba was screened last weekend at the Montreal Film Festival and is also expected to be included in the London International Film Festival next month.
Also starring Boman Irani as Abba, the movie is a light-hearted satire on modern India and marriage with echoes of Benegal's Welcome to Sajjanpur. It's about a bus driver who takes a month off work to attend to the serious business of finding his teenage daughter a husband.

Click above for movie stills As many as six films are slated for release this Friday. These include Daddy Cool, Kisaan, Love Khichdi, Quick Gun Murugan, Toss and Yeh Mera India. I am not counting the English ones, which will also hit the marquee this Friday. Whew! Is this the Idd week? Or Diwali or Christmas? So why this mad rush to release films? And, most importantly, what are their survival chances, given the fact that so many films are clashing on the same day? Frankly, do the producers have a choice? My personal viewpoint is that the business is bound to get divided, but the producers feel they would stand no chance once the biggies invade the screen again, from September 18 onwards [Wanted, Dil Bole Hadippa]. The idea is to release at a time when there aren't any biggies in the fray. At least the films would be assured of getting the right...

Hardly a handful of films old, Amrita Rao already has two superhits, Main Hoon Na, Vivaah and three hits, Ishq Vishk, Masti and Welcome To Sajjanpur listed in her resume. Most of the roles that she essayed were performance oriented ones, in which the producers used her girl next door, innocent and demure looks and thus she sort of got caught up in that image. However, it appears that Amrita, like all actresses, wants to prove her versatility, and so is trying her level best to...

Once a poet said that 'If the world was ever enveloped by darkness, I will simply tell an innocent girl to smile, for her mere smile is enough to fully illuminate the world!' We are very sure of the fact that the poet surely must have had Birthday-girl Amrita Rao (7th June’ 2009) in mind, whilst coming up with these golden words. Amrita, for starters, is what one would like to call as the apt fitting synonym to the words 'innocence' and 'purity'. Having made her debut in a forgettable flick called Ab Ke Baras, Amrita has indeed come a long way with an array of hits tucked under her belt, courtesy her superlative acting in films like Main Hoon Na, Welcome To Sajjanpur, My Name Is Anthony Gonsalves, Vivaah, Vaah! Life Ho Toh Aisi, Masti, Ishq Vishk, Victory etc… The success meter of her acting skills lies in the...

Bollywood actor Shreyas Talpade had no starry tantrums when he was stuck in a major traffic jam in Mumbai recently. The actor got out of his car and helped a few volunteers on the road in clearing it up. Shreyas, who was seen in films like "Welcome To Sajjanpur" and "Golmaal Returns" last year, was in Juhu when he got stuck at a traffic signal, said a source close to the actor. "Shreyas really assumed a traffic cop's duties for a while. He was stuck in a bad traffic jam at the Juhu Scheme junction because the traffic signals were dysfunctional and there was no cop. It was utter chaos there. "Though Shreyas patiently waited for a while in his car, when he realised that the traffic wasn't moving at all, he knew that he had to do something instead of just sitting there helplessly and waiting for the traffic to ease out.

All of Kunal Kapoor’s recent appearances in big banner films have been short special appearances. Right from Laaga Chunari Mein Daag to Aaja Nachle to Bachna Ae Haseeno and to Welcome To Sajjanpur he is being seen playing guest roles rather than the main lead part.
While a close pal of the bearded actor suggests he has been doing this small roles in the above mentioned films because he could not say No to it’s makers as he was returning their favour.
It is now learnt that Kunal has jumped from short roles to short films. He is acting in a short film called Linger. He won’t stop.

In Bollywood, you are either a star or a critically-acclaimed actor. There are very few who have actually struck a balance between both parallel, low budget and commercial cinema. One of them is Shreyas Talpade, who single handedly carried Shyam Benegal directed Welcome To Sajjanpur, a film that was appreciated by the critics and did well on the box office on his shoulders. Before that, the Subhash Ghai film Iqbal also had the same fate. Not only did it win accolades by the masses and classes but did very well commercially. Then followed another Ghai production, the complete potboiler Apna Sapna Money Money which was a box office success too....
