This year’s summer box office has been filled with somber emotions so far, but Disney Pixar's ‘Inside Out 2’ is eliciting joy and relief, delivering a massive $155 million domestic opening. The animated sequel shattered projections and set several records, including the biggest animated debut since ‘The Incredibles 2’ in 2018 and the largest opening overall since last summer's ‘Barbie.’ Its $295 million global start also set a new high mark for an animated film, and while it coincided with three major streaming releases over the weekend (“The Boys” Season 4 premiere, the conclusion of “Bridgerton” Season 3, and the second season debut of “House of the Dragon”), that programming was geared toward adults and didn’t pose a threat to theatrical family fare.
The stellar start for ‘Inside Out 2’ provided a huge boost to the summer box office after a sluggish past few months. The film's reviews were overwhelmingly positive at 8.0 on IMDb, fueling excellent word-of-mouth. Amy Poehler returned as the voice of Joy, leading an ensemble that included new additions like Maya Hawke as the personification of teenage Anxiety.
In second place, Sony's ‘Bad Boys: Ride or Die’ fell 41.6% to $33 million in its second weekend, bringing the Will Smith/Martin Lawrence action sequel to $112 million domestically and $215 million globally. That’s still a solid showing that eased any concerns about Smith’s ability to draw crowds post-slap.
20th Century's ‘Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes’ took third place with $5.2 million in its sixth weekend. The sci-fi action film has now grossed $157.8 million in North America and $374.5 million globally, continuing the strong run for the revived Apes franchise.
While Hollywood has accepted that 2024 totals will end up well behind 2023’s box office gross, the successful opening was a step towards chipping away at a steep year-over-year decline (down 26% going into the weekend). The industry can chalk this up as a win, but the relief will be short-lived as studios look to the remaining summer tentpoles—like ‘A Quiet Place: Day One,’ ‘Despicable Me 4,’ ‘Deadpool & Wolverine,’ and ‘Twisters’—to deliver before shifting focus to the fall and holiday seasons.

Sequels are a given in Hollywood. If a movie is a massive hit—and sometimes even when it’s not—studios are eager to pounce on any opportunity to extend the brand into another film and sometimes even a whole series of them. Franchises and IP (intellectual property) are for better or worse the name of the game in Tinseltown, no matter how often critics and audiences seem to cry out for more original material at the multiplex.
The other thing about sequels is that Hollywood is a strange place that can either move at lightning speed or slow down to a pace of a glacier. While some follow-up films get placed on the fast track and can rocket into theaters in as little as two years, others get bogged down in that infamous existential swamp known as development hell.

U.S.-based Italian director Mitzi Peirone’s comic horror thriller “Saint Clare” has been set as the opening night film of Italy’s upcoming Taormina Film Festival with protagonist Bella Thorne in attendance.
“Saint Clare” follows Peirone’s debut, the horror film “Braid,” which launched from Tribeca in 2018.
Based on U.S. author Don Roff’s novel “Clare at Sixteen,” “Saint Clare” is set in a small town where “a solitary young woman is haunted by voices that lead her to assassinate ill intended people and get away with it, until her last kill sucks her down a rabbit hole riddled with corruption, trafficking and visions from the beyond,” as the provided synopsis puts it.

At last. A weekend to sincerely cheer.
“Inside Out 2” (Disney) would have been terrific at a $100 million opening weekend, but it soared to an estimated $155 million. Meantime, “Bad Boys: Ride or Die” (Sony), would have been thought successful with a 50 percent drop in its second weekend. Instead, it is off 42 percent with $33 million after an opening weekend of $56.5 million.
In what was set up to be a do-or-die critical two-weekend period, “Bad Boys: Ride or Die” (Sony) and “Inside Out 2” (Disney) exceeded expectations — and more importantly, at the same time. It’s hard to overestimate how much dread there was ahead of these two releases. Had either or both fell short of reasonable expectations, as did to many recent high-end releases before them, the despair would have reached new lows.
Instead, not only did both franchise titles come through, they also exceeded best hopes. That happened last nearly a year ago,...

Yorgos Lanthimos and Emma Stone have emerged as quite the duo in recent years. The director and actress managed to turn both "The Favourite" and "Poor Things" into rare, original box office hits that also went on to garner some major awards season love. Now, they're back together again with another dark comedy in the form of "Kinds of Kindness," which is rolling out in select theaters next weekend before expanding nationwide in the coming weeks. The question is, can Lanthimos and Stone pull off a hat trick and go three for three?
Disney's Searchlight Pictures is making a couple of wise decisions regarding "Kinds of Kindness." For one, it premiered at the Cannes Film Festival to build some buzz, with Jesse Plemons winning Best Actor for his work in the film. That has teed up the ball for a limited release next weekend, with Lanthimos' latest work playing in...

Warner Bros. announced on Thursday that Trap, the latest thriller from two-time Oscar nominee M. Night Shyamalan, will go earlier, moving up a week from August 9 to August 2nd.
At the same time, the studio unveiled release dates for four untitled projects. An Untitled Nl/Atomic Monster/Blumhouse Event Film will open on April 17, 2026, while an Untitled WB Event Film will debut March 26, 2027. Hype for this summer’s Twisters may not exactly be hitting at record speeds, but we can probably expect some dumb action – and sometimes that’s just what you want in a summer movie. But before you write this sequel off, Twisters star Glen Powell wants you to know that it has one of the most incredible action sequences ever captured.
The core Twisters cast – Glen Powell, Daisy Edgar-Jones, Anthony Ramos, and Brandon Perea – recently sat down with Fandango ahead of its July 19th release, with Powell building a storm of excitement for one key scene. “There’s a sequence in the movie that I think is going to be one of the most incredible action sequences of all time. It all happens in a oner and I think that we shot that in December with a rain machine. One of the coldest nights I’ve ever experienced, getting dragged...

Sherri Crichton was on a mission. She was poring over filing cabinets, old computers and scattered notes when she finally found it: a manuscript from her late husband, “Jurassic Park” and “Congo” writer Michael Crichton.
Each thread led her to the next: a draft called “Vulcan,” and other pieces called “The Black Zone” and “Black Agent.”
She knew about a long-gestating volcano project he’d been working on before his death – they’d been to Pompeii on their honeymoon, after all. “He would leave breadcrumbs. We’d be on a hike, and he would talk to me about the formation of lava,” Sherri says over lunch in early June. “His mind was this massive database that was just pumping out great story after great story after great story.”
There was just one problem: this story wasn’t finished. “When I started reading the book, I literally was covered in chills knowing that this is it.

The original 1996 hit Twister is coming to 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray at last, to give your home cinema system a workout. More here.
We’re a few weeks away from the release of Twisters in worldwide cinemas, the follow-up to 1996’s hit movie about people running around after a lot of wind. All with a flying cow thrown in for good measure.
The original movie was a massive hit, but it’s also worth noting that on every format it’s landed on – DVD, Blu-ray, HD DVD – it’s been a hefty home cinema workout. The audio for a start is a rollicking workout for a decent set of speakers, and it’s surprising that it’s taken a while for the movie to arrive on the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray format.
Still, it’s happening at last, even if you have to wait until Twisters has been released to get it.

It’s a “Hot Glen Summer” at the movies.
Just like the immortal words of Megan Thee Stallion, who’s billed every summer since 2019 the perfect time to do “hot girl shit,” Glen Powell is heating up movie screens. Summer 2024 firmly establishes him as a power player with Netflix’s “Hit Man,” the Prime Video documentary “The Blue Angels” and Universal “Twisters” dropping in rapid succession.
In the words of Retta — who first met Powell on the 2014 indie rom-com “Sex Ed” before they reunited for “Hit Man” — “Homie is a straight up movie star.”
“This is the summer of Glen,” director Richard Linklater concurs. “They’re all ‘Johnny come lately’ to the Glen Powell thing. Anybody who’s known Glen for the last 10-plus years knows that he’s a star. He’s smart. He’s funny. He’s hard working.”

Well don’t worry, the “Anyone but You” and “Hit Man” star will be back on the big screen soon enough with “Minari” director Lee Isaac Chung’s “Twisters.” Coming to theaters July 19, “Twisters” is a sequel to the 1996 disaster film and box office bonanza “Twister,” but features a new, young cast headed by Powell and including Daisy Edgar-Jones, Brandon Perea, and Anthony Ramos. To tease the upcoming blockbuster, all four actors sat down with Fandango to discuss the making of the film and the level of authenticity sought through practical effects.
“There’s a sequence in the movie that I think is going to be one of the most incredible action sequences of all time,” Powell said. “It all happens in a oner and I think that we shot that in December with a rain machine. One of the coldest nights I’ve ever experienced,...

Good news for those Bad Boys: audiences are still ride or die for the exploits of Mike and Marcus. That’s reflected in the opening weekend box office figures for the buddy-action franchise’s fourth instalment, Bad Boys: Ride Or Die, which saw Will Smith and Martin Lawrence draw in an impressive haul – earning over $100 million worldwide. In a stuttering summer, with major movies like Furiosa and The Fall Guy underperforming, that’s a significant success; particularly considering Bad Boys doesn’t sit on the CGI-heavy mega-spectacle end of the blockbuster spectrum.
Bad Boys: Ride Or Die earned $56 million at the US box office, and added $48 million from across the rest of the world, all adding up to an opening weekend of $104 million. That’s significantly higher than the opening haul for The Fall Guy (around $65 million), and Furiosa (roughly $59 million). The film is directed by Adil & Bilall – who...

“Bad Boys: Ride or Die” gave the box office a desperately needed jolt, but the action-comedy fourquel can’t salvage the summer season by itself.
Although the newest “Bad Boys,” reuniting Will Smith and Martin Lawrence as Miami cops, arrived on the higher end of expectations with $56 million in domestic ticket sales, the year-to-date deficit actually grew more pronounced. Heading into the weekend, ticket sales were 24% behind 2023 and now overall revenues are lagging by 26% according to Comscore.
“Bad Boys 4” isn’t to blame for the decline; analysts believe it’s the lack of enthusiasm for other titles in the marketplace. Four of the other top five releases — Sony’s animated “The Garfield Movie” ($10 million), Paramount’s fantasy comedy “If” ($8 million), the Warner Bros. supernatural thriller and fellow newcomer “The Watchers” ($7.4 million) and Disney and 20th Century’s sequel “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” ($5.4 million) — brought in scraps.

“Hit Man” is writer/director Richard Linklater’s most commercial film since “School of Rock.” While the indie icon has enjoyed some mild box office successes in his 30-year-plus career, those have largely been the product of overwhelmingly positive critical reception and the longtail word-of-mouth that accompanies a beloved gem like “Boyhood.”
But that’s not “Hit Man.” Linklater combines the fun of a screwball comedy, the twists and turns of a crime film, and a sexy romance featuring the magnetic charm of Glen Powell in a role that announces him as a full-blown movie star after having carried (along with co-star Sidney Sweeney) the surprise rom-com hit “Anyone But You” this winter, and ahead of anchoring the studio tentpole “Twisters” this summer.

Glen Powell has promised 'Twisters' features “one of the most incredible action sequences of all time”.The 'Top Gun: Maverick' actor teased the storm footage in the upcoming blockbuster "all happens in a oner" and he was "hit by debris" and got soaked through when he had to go and film the scene with the stunt cast.Speaking in the 'Fandango's Big Ticket' interview, he said: “We shot that in December, with a rain machine. One of the coldest nights I’ve ever experienced, getting dragged across a pool by a wire. I think it was the most physical thing that I’ve ever done.“You’re talking about humans getting sucked up into a tornado. With the unofficial beginning of summer — Memorial Day — come and gone, the season has entered full swing. Several of the summer weekends will be crowded at the box office with sometimes three releases competing on similar dates. With action films like Bad Boys: Ride Or Die, A Quiet Place: Day One and Twisters taking us through July, some animated adventures like Inside Out 2 and Despicable Me 4 will provide fun for whole families.
Deadpool 3 will cap off July with a new Marvel installment from Shawn Levy, Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds, making way for more sinister films ahead of fall like M. Night Shyamalan’s Trap and Alien: Romulus. Beetlejuice Beetlejuice deserves an honorable mention although it won’t hit theaters until September to lead into spooky season and October.

Jan de Bont's "Twister" might be regarded nowadays as one of the most thrilling blockbusters of the 1990s, but when it hit theaters on May 10, 1996, the first, heavily-hyped summer tentpole out of the gate that year, it felt like a bit of a miss. Responses varied, mostly because you really needed to see the film on a massive screen in a theater outfitted with top-grade sound –- this way, the visual/aural sensation concocted by de Bont and the best of the best at Ilm and Skywalker Sound could blow you up, up and out of the cineplex, thus distracting you from the bland characters and preposterously thin plot. (Helen Hunt's character needs to face and survive an F5 tornado to exorcize her childhood demons.)
Actually, there's a world in which this is an awesomely preposterous plot, but "Twister" offers only mechanical blockbuster storytelling. The film –- from...

Exclusive: Oscar-winning Free Solo directors Jimmy Chin and Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi have come aboard as part of the package to direct Eruption, the novel by Michael Crichton and James Patterson that was just published atop every bestseller list.
The duo will be in the center of meetings to be held next week in which they’ll pitch the book, a large scale earth-threatening thriller about a volcano explosion in Hawaii. At the same time, Jim and Vasarhelyi might also be directing a documentary on the life of the late great Crichton.
Eruption is a big scale disaster novel tale that Crichton spent 20 years working on before his untimely death. The novel just went out to studios and other major buyers. It’s expected to be a big sale, continuing the legacy of the brilliant author behind everything from Jurassic Park, Westworld, Twister, ER and so many others.

With great action comes great effort. Glen Powell teased “one of the most incredible action sequences of all time” in this summer’s Twisters, coming July 19.
The actor recounted his experience shooting the storm sequence in a Fandango’s Big Ticket interview, which he says “all happens in a oner.” The appearance was pegged to the film’s tickets going on sale.
“We shot that in December, with a rain machine,” Powell says in the clip. “One of the coldest nights I’ve ever experienced, getting dragged across a pool by a wire. I think it was the most physical thing that I’ve ever done.”
Daisy Edgar-Jones, Powell’s Twisters co-star, agrees “completely,” she says.
“You’re talking about humans getting sucked up into a tornado,” Powell continues. “But you’re recreating what it’s like to be getting hit by debris and all that stuff. So you’re...

Richard Linklater is opening up about the hurdles to producing his latest movie, “Hit Man,” saying that studios initially “really didn’t want to make the film.”
In a new interview with the BBC, the celebrated director of “Dazed and Confused” and the “Before” trilogy said that he and Glen Powell — who stars in the film and co-wrote the script — worked on the film “very independently.”
“Glen and I wrote it speculatively and we didn’t get paid anything, we just tried to get the film made,” he told the BBC. “We really felt we were onto something, we felt we had written a film noir, a crime film that’s also a screwball comedy about a couple that you’re rooting to be together, but I think they wanted it to be just one thing.”

You want twisters, you got twisters. According to the director of Twisters, the upcoming weather disaster blockbuster was filmed on-location in rural Oklahoma during tornado season. It was tough, Lee Isaac Chung tells Empire. The unpredictability of the weather caused a lot of issues and delays. It was my choice to do this in tornado season, but honestly, I still can’t believe we actually did it. Tackling the Authenticity Challenge Filming a complex Hollywood production in such a demanding location sounds grossly impractical. Still, Chung stressed the importance of authenticity, saying: This is an elemental story, so I wanted us...

Lee Isaac Chung’s Twisters sequel will receive its Italian premiere at this year’s Taormina Film Festival, which takes place July 12 to July 19 in southern Italy.
Twisters will screen at the festival’s historic Teatro Antico amphitheater. This year’s event will mark the festival’s 70th edition. The film will be released in Italian theatres on July 17 via Warner Bros. Pictures and will hit North American cinemas on July 19 via Universal Pictures.
“I am grateful to Warner Bros. for this wonderful gift, which confirms one of our programming guidelines: relying on diversity of styles,” said Marco Müller, artistic director of the Taormina Film Festival. “With Twisters, Lee Isaac Chung has gone from his Academy Award-winning drama Minari to deliver a spectacular cinematic event speaking to an even wider audience.”
Twisters is billed as “a sweeping current-day chapter of the 1996 blockbuster.” The film stars Golden Globe nominee Daisy Edgar-Jones as Kate Cooper, a former storm chaser, and Glen Powell who plays Tyler Owens, a charming and reckless social media superstar. The synopsis reads: Two opposing forces, come together to try to predict, and possibly tame, the immense power of tornadoes.
The cast also features Golden Globe nominee Anthony Ramos (In The Heights), Brandon Perea (Nope), Golden Globe awardee Maura Tierney (Beautiful Boy), and Sasha Lane (American Honey), along with David Corenswet (the upcoming Superman), Daryl McCormack (Peaky Blinders), Kiernan Shipka (Chilling Adventures of Sabrina) and Nik Dodani (Atypical).
Producers are Frank Marshall (the Jurassic Park and Indiana Jones franchises) and Patrick Crowley (the Jurassic Park and Bourne franchises). The film was written by Mark L. Smith, screenwriter of The Revenant, from a story by Joseph Kosinski, based on characters created by Michael Crichton & Anne-Marie Martin.
The Taormina Film Festival is promoted and organised by the Fondazione Taormina Arte Sicilia with the support of the Assessorato del Turismo dello Sport e dello Spettacolo della Regione Siciliana of the Sicilia Film Commission, the Municipality of Taormina and the Ministry of Culture–General Directorate for Cinema and Audiovisual (MiC).

Disaster films have experienced a resurgence over the past few years, and this Steven Spielberg-produced movie with Glen Powell, Daisy Edgar-Jones, and Anthony Ramos in the lead may end up becoming the biggest summer hit. Twisters is an upcoming movie from director Lee Isaac Chung that serves as the standalone sequel to the 1996 film Twister.

Lee Isaac Chung exposed the cast of 'Twisters' to the elements during filming for the disaster movie. The 45-year-old director has helmed the sequel to the 1996 tornado flick 'Twister' and pushed the stars – including Glen Powell and Daisy Edgar-Jones – to the limit to ensure the film was "as practical as possible".Lee told Empire magazine: "This is an elemental story, so I wanted us to go as practical as possible."We really tore things up. We had jet engines blowing. We had fans so massive you'd lose your hearing without earplugs. We were pelting our cast with everything – dirt, wind, ice."Chung also explained that the picture was shot during tornado season in Oklahoma which increased the complexity of the production. The 'Minari' filmmaker said: "It was tough. The unpredictability of the weather caused a lot of issues and delays."It was my choice...

Megan Moroney appeared on The Tonight Show to showcase her single, “No Caller ID.” The country singer performed the emotional ballad alongside her live band with a glittering guitar and microphone.
Moroney dropped “No Caller ID” back in January, marking the musician’s first new music since the release of her breakout debut LP, Lucky. The post-breakup ballad re-teamed Moroney with Lucky producer and Sugarland member Kristian Bush, as well as co-writers Jessi Alexander, Connie Harrington, and Jessie Jo Dillon.
The single will appear on Moroney’s forthcoming LP, Am I Okay?...

If there’s one thing you need to know about ‘90s blockbuster breeze-fest Twister, it’s this: it really delivers on the ‘twister’ front. If you’re going to make a film intended to bring audiences right into the eye of the storm-chasing profession, you’d better ensure they emerge from the auditorium feeling suitably windswept. And so, when devising long-awaited sequel-of-sorts Twisters, arriving later this summer, filmmaker Lee Isaac Chung (predominantly known for much-less-blockbustery awards favourite Minari) knew he had to really deliver on the weather front.
That meant battering his astonishing cast of rising Hollywood stars – including Glen Powell, Daisy Edgar-Jones and Anthony Ramos – with all kinds of practical wind effects. “This is an elemental story, so I wanted us to go as practical as possible,” Chung tells Empire. “We really tore things up. We had jet engines blowing. We had fans so massive you’d lose your hearing without earplugs.

Glen Powell has been in the film industry for quite some while now, but his role in Tom Cruise’s Top Gun: Maverick brought him global recognition and success. An incredible actor, he has since starred in the sleeper hit Anyone but You, and Hit Man, both of which brought him acclaim and fame.

Paul Mescal and Daisy Edgar-Jones will reunite for a Normal People screening benefitting suicide prevention and mental health, the pair of actors announced Thursday.
Mescal and Edgar-Jones will join series director Lenny Abrahamson, Element Pictures and “other friends of the show” for the screening, which will take place in London on June 16 with raffle tickets to win entry starting at €45, or $48.75. The presentation will include all 12 episodes of the Emmy-nominated miniseries.
The two actors hinted at their reuniting earlier this week, with a photo of them together on Instagram.
The raffle will support Pieta, Ireland’s suicide and self-harm prevention charity, and Unicef.
“We’ve never seen it on a big screen together, and we would love to see as many of you there as possible!” the pair wrote on the auction site. Fans can buy tickets here.
Normal People, an adaptation of Sally Rooney’s 2018 novel, launched the careers of both Mescal and Edgar-Jones.

Glen Powell has become a household name thanks to his standout roles in movies like Top Gun: Maverick and the upcoming disaster flick Twisters. But did you know he was almost part of another blockbuster? In a recent interview with GQ UK, Powell opened up about nearly landing a significant role in Christopher Nolan’s acclaimed film Oppenheimer. Close but No Cigar for Oppenheimer Role According to Powell, he was very close to playing Ernest Lawrence, a Nobel-winning nuclear physicist, in Oppenheimer. The role eventually went to Josh Hartnett. As Powell shared, It’s haunting when you blow those moments… that was...

Glen Powell may be blowing up thanks to roles in Top Gun: Maverick and Anyone But You, but like any other actor, he struggled on his way to the top and lost out on some major roles, including Han Solo in Solo: A Star Wars Story.
While chatting with GQ UK, Glen Powell spoke of coming “agonizingly” close to playing Han Solo, only to drop the ball at the last moment. “I can joke about it now,” he said, “[but] I blew that final audition.” The role ultimately went to Alden Ehrenreich, but with Powell’s charisma, you can see why Disney was interested in him in the first place. The actor also said he screwed up auditions for Captain America and Cowboys & Aliens over the years, but he’s accepted that it just wasn’t meant to be.

Glen Powell told some of his best Tom Cruise stories as part of a cover story interview with GQ UK magazine. The two actors became close friends during the production of “Top Gun: Maverick.” Powell originally auditioned for the role of Rooster, but he was beat out by Miles Teller. Cruise liked Powell and offered him the role of Hangman, but Powell had some notes.
“What we were talking about is, how can Hangman service the story and give the flavor of the original ‘Top Gun’ that you need?” Powell remembered saying to his A-list co-star. “I said my piece to Tom about what I do and what I do well, and he listened. Tom’s a listener. He listens to the crew members, he listens to his collaborators, and he hears people.”

Glen Powell's star is on the rise. After wowing moviegoers with Top Gun: Maverick and Anyone But You, he'll take centre stage this summer in Hit Man and Twisters. Surely a superhero role is next?
You'd think so, but as GQ points out in a new profile on the actor, "Powell has no interest in playing a superhero." This comes after we recently learned he's also not interested in "Marvel fare."
Taking a journalist on a tour of the Warner Bros. lot, Powell pointed out the new Superman logo on the door of James Gunn's office. However, he wasn't among the actors who tried out for the Dcu's new Man of Steel.
"But I was on the set of Twisters with [newly-anointed Clark Kent] David Corenswet when he got the call," he reveals. "He’s a hustler and he deserves it."

Glen Powell may have a lock on a slew of beloved 1970s and 1980s franchise reboots, but the actor almost traveled to a galaxy far, far away a decade ago.
Powell told GQ UK that he was amid the final casting round to play Han Solo in “Star Wars” prequel film “Solo” circa 2018.

Ansel Elgort also auditioned but it was Alden Ehrenreich who was instead cast in the lead role. The feature, directed by Ron Howard, bombed at the box office.
