I miss the old walking dead
cmarlborough3 October 2022
I'm here til the end but I really do miss the early writing in TWD. This season is really disjointed, things move on away from the camera in a way that makes it difficult to follow the story, the candlelit vigil seemed off kilter with the rest of the episode and Kelly and Connie look like they are lost! There were good bits (pleased to see Neagan return and always love Daryl) and some of the scenes with the horde were really well filmed but I'm not really feeling the love yet. I really hope it gets better- I was so excited for the last season and I feel a bit let down so far if I'm honest. Come on TWD. Make me feel like I'm on the edge of my seat one more time.

Decent Reintroduction to the Show's Universe After the Hiatus
MamadNobari973 October 2022
This episode was decent enough I guess, not great but not bad either, it's on par with the rest of the later seasons we've seen before in terms of quality and storytelling.

And my problems with it are the same I've had with the later seasons for a long time.

First of all, what annoyed me the most during this episode was how it was shot. The show definitely and obviously has a color grading but I don't think that's enough. I don't know when they started to go with digital cameras, but I think that was a bad idea. I liked it at first and how crisp and good quality it looked, but now it's just too clean for its own good. It's too clean and crisp and borders on home video quality. They should've just added fake film grain to make it look more "filmy" and not some tiktok video. There's a reason why b movies and indie or bad movies look weirder and are in total contrast to usual high-production movies we see. There's a reason why you immediately recognize when a movie is low production when you see 5 seconds of its trailer, it's mostly because of the color grading and no film grain. There's a reason why movies aren't in high frames and they've been doing 24fps for this long. Movies and shows just shouldn't look this clean and crisp, that makes them look like I'm watching a home video or a youtube clip instead of a high production tv show.

Another thing that still bothers me about the episodes, which is not that big of a deal, but something that I notice in pretty much every episode, is the editing and the pacing of the show. The way they cut to another scene and the order of these scenes just feel weird to me and I don't know why. Sometimes it feels like there's something missing in between and they've cut something out or the transition just needs an establishing scene maybe. But like I said, it's not that big of a deal at the end of the day, but is felt anyway.

Hornsby's last cliffhanger scene from the previous episode is weirdly mentioned on the recap here but isn't alluded to in any way for some reason, which I guess they'll probably address that in the next episode maybe, but why show it on the recap if none of the scenes of this episode is about that?

Another thing that I'm sure most people are gonna complain about is the incompetency of these stormtroopers. I realize that things like these are needed so the plot happens, suspension of disbelief and all that, but when it happens this much and all of these "trained" and professional soldiers act like this, I can't really look away. It is kinda common for the show's new writing to be this way, at least they're trying to create new situations with unique zombie kills and zombies eating human stuff, but the way they go about it feels so forced that it's really noticeable. Like we have a soldier that has crashed his car and is calling for backup, but then just stands there for the zombies to get to him when he has a mile of free space behind him. Again, I get that the plot and scenes like what happens after wouldn't happen if everyone was Einstein, but they've had all this time to think the script through, surely they could've come up with situations where are these things happening don't feel as forced and artificial as they are right?

The show's writing from season 9 till now has been a masterpiece compared to the trash writing of 7 and 8, but it's not perfect and my big complaint is this feeling of forced and artificiality. The writing is competent enough, I just want a more natural writing than what we're getting, that's all.

Not to mention how Daryl and the gang had like 5 chances by now and from previous episodes too to easily kill Hornsby but they've missed. Thankfully, at least he does get shot a couple of times to make him seem less plot armor-y, but they keep showing these situations where Daryl can easily take him out and doesn't and that makes him getting shot matter less, not to mention he goes on by his day like nothing happened to him either. I'm not saying they should kill him because that would mean the plot is gonna end or we miss a better plot from the future episodes, I'm just saying they shouldn't keep making these situations and find a better way.

I was also hoping before the last part of the season ended, that this Commonwealth plot was gonna end there and we were gonna be done with it and this third part was gonna be about whatever Michonne and Rick were doing, but I guess I was too hopeful and they're probably gonna end this season and the show as a whole with the Commonwealth plot and maybe have Rick and Michonne back for the last episode. And not that the Commonwealth plot is boring or not that good, I just think having Rick and Michonne back with their own plot and group would've been more interesting. Not to mention we had that cannibal group in season 5 and they were done with that plot line so quickly but they're focusing a whole season on this Commonwealth which I think everyone agrees aren't as half as interesting as the cannibals from season 5.

This review sounded really negative and I only talked about my complaints about the show and the episode, but that's because nothing big has happened yet and it's on par with the previous ones and the plot just slightly has gone forward. I otherwise enjoyed the episode and it's good to be back in this universe and finally see how they're gonna end it. I liked most of the cinematography and some shots of these episodes, though I don't really like when they do close-ups when characters are talking to each other. The music is great as always and Bear McCreary has been killing it for years and the music of this show has only become more noticeable these past few seasons when the showrunner changed.

All in all decent enough episode if you're binging the season, but I think it should've been better since it's practically a season opener when it's coming out after a long hiatus, good enough nonetheless.

Good, but still not great
matp-476003 October 2022
I'll admit, my expectations were low. The final season had had some great episodes but has fell pretty flat sometimes too.

This episode was action-packed and fast-paced, and its great to see the Commonwealth story coming to an end soon. It leaves the door open for more fresh, new story not from the comics. Daryl and Negan teamed up, which is great to see but I wish we had gotten it sooner! There was also plenty of blood and gore, which is what we love.

That being said, there were still many eye-roll moments, as is typical of TWD.

The Commonwealth soldiers have pinpoint accuracy against walkers but not the main characters, of course. Daryl got shot at like 100 times this episode, and never even looked like he might get hit. HIs invincibility is getting out of hand. Not only is he bullet-proof but apparently head-on car crashes don't even phase him.

Also, for the love of God, stop baiting us with flashbacks of Rick. It seems pretty clear that he won't show up until the spin-off, so it bothers me that the main series is still baiting us with the hope that Rick will show up.

Also, Lance is not a great villain. He was useless in this episode, and all he does is get ambushed and shot up by the main characters without ever achieving anything. Its a bit of a waste of a great actor and an interesting character, he just seems like a cartoon villain now. So do the Commonwealth soldiers.

However, we got some more Negan scenes. I don't care what he does, but everytime that man is on screen I am excited. We really need to see more of him.

All that being said, it was a promising start and I really hope they keep it up, but I doubt it. TWD always starts strong and then loses steam in the middle.

Best episode of season 11 so far and I'm not even exaggerating
thelegendaryaceofspadez2 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I'm gonna make this as much as spoiler free as I can, Lockdown was a 10/10 for me it literally felt like an action movie with great performances from the whole cast. With tensions rising in the commonwealth we get to see protests against Sebastian and his wrong doings and on the other hand theres this masterpiece of a car chase scene .. there's so much i want to write here but I really want y'all to enjoy it so there's that. Anyways, there's so much in my mind so many questions .. is the Daryl spinoff a lie? Is Rick Grimes going to make an appearance? Are the variant walkers really that dangerous? Well I'm gonna stop here happy watching! You're in for an absolute treat.

SO glad this show picked up after season 8
finleydav3 October 2022
Since the start of season 9 this show has been a breath of fresh air. It's had its nitpicks but what show doesn't .

This episode was a brilliant start to 11c and after watching 18 which was fantastic I can only hope it stays at this level or even beyond

11x17 was no different to any other episode it has it's fair share of small raised questions due to lack of common sense from a few characters mostly from the commonwealth side but nothing major There were a few scenes I would've liked them to expand on for example the very opening of this episode.

GREAT action sequences GREAT dialogue 8/10.

Pure Action
wrka-195-2999282 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I've always wondered how the writers will introduce Negan in this part of the series, let's remember that Negan is exiled and never appears in the commonwealth arc in the comic, but his introduction in this part was more than satisfactory, even funny, providing new interactions with other characters in the series, it was excellent, one point for the writers.

Lance the new villain, the most surprising thing that seems to be the brightest that any of the previous ones, a man with nothing to lose and that for sure in the next episodes we will hate him intensely. Excellent performance by Josh Hamilton.

Lots of action, car chases, with Negan and Daryl, a walking horde approaching the commonwealth, my favorite part is Negan and Carol, their their interaction is great.

10/10 for this beginning of the end.

Politicians, the Greatest Problem of any Society
claudio_carvalho24 January 2024
Daryl and Maggie are hiding from Hornby and his men, when they stumble upon Gabriel, Aaron, Negan and Annie. They are in doubt whether they should return to Commonwealth to protect the children and their friends, or fight Hornsby and his soldiers. Daryl proposes that Daryl, who is unknown in Commonwealth, goes alone and meet Carol to protect their people. Negan flees to Commonwealth to meet Mercer. The residents are protesting Pamela and Sebastian Milton demanding justice. Carol is taking care of the children, when she sees Shira and Calhoun coming towards her apartment. They hide and the Hornsby agents do not see them. Meanwhile, Mercer summons Rosita to help him and a few soldiers to fight a herd of walker that are coming to Commonwealth.

"Lockdown" is an episode full of action of "The Walking Dead". However, politics seems to prevail in this season where an organized society is formed with the same model of USA before the zombie apocalypse. The class struggle, Hornsby and Pamela Milton seem to be the greatest problem of Commonwealth. But it is bad with them and maybe worst without them, since they built the town in the middle of the chaos. The next episodes will say. My vote is seven.

Solid Beginning to the Commonwealth War
tristan_192 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Pieces are moving in almost every storyline this episode. It feels somewhat like a Season Premiere, and probably should have been, but the last episodes were cut short to eight, because of numerous reasons related to external problems.

The car chase is really well done and reminiscing of The Key from Season 8. The camera work is on point, and the stakes are real. Hornsby continues pushing in, as a swarm closes in the community, while all the mayhem is happening and starting to matter.

The common folk wants justice and enforcers are stopping them from all sides. Carol also works with Negan this episode, which is a terrific payoff, after seeing the results of them working together before with Alpha, but never the process.

Overall, Lockdown does what it needs to and provide the thrills. It is set up done well and the music is also good whenever Calhoun and Shira are on screen.

Lockdown
bobcobb3014 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
It is amazing that this show is finally coming to an end after all of the years. A good portion of my life was spent watching zombies eat people and that will all be over soon.

Not exactly an enthralling episode to kick off the last part of the final season, but they did hook me in with more than enough action sequences.

I also noticed that some of the zombie attacks were particularly gory here, I don't think that was by accident but by design.

I am not a fan of The Commonwealth setting, I have always found it to be simply too unrealistic, but I do want to see how it all wraps up. How are Daryl and Maggie going to get out of this one?

Great premiere for the final part!

Warning: Spoilers
There's genuinely nothing to complain about. I loved every second of this episode. It was fast paced a lot of action and man I gotta say Lance is such a great character. Whenever there's a shootout now I'm actually scared for the characters. The cinematography is beautiful this season and it only gets better. Negan was also great in this episode and they really don't shy away from the f bombs so there's that. Really like the idea of Judith narrating every single episode. It really does feel like it's coming to an end. Hopefully we'll get to see Rick and Michonne because it would not feel right to end the series without them. Loved the episode easy 10/10.

Nothing Too Great or Exciting
panagiotis199322 November 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Love the intro with the emotional flashbacks. I can't really remember seeing a car chase on TWD before, that was nice. Yumiko is back? I forgot she even existed. Glad to see the children again. Nice to see Jerry too. I love watching the Commonwealth falling apart. It seems like Maggie, Daryl, Gabriel and Aaron have been in conflict with the Commonwealth soldiers for days. Don't they need to eat and sleep at all? Ms Milton doesn't seem to know what Lance has been up to, interesting. I hope that the crowd will eventually tear Sebastian apart. Decent episode but nothing too great or exciting. My rating is 7/10.

Greg Nicotero delivered yet again, giving us an action packed mid-season premiere, full of suspension and tension
Holt3442 October 2022
The premise of episode 11.17 titled "Lockdown": Daryl and Negan rush to the commonwealth to stop Hornsby from going after their families. Pamela deals with protesters demanding justice for Sebastian's crimes. Mercer needs Rosita's help to fight a swarm. This episode contains some brilliant editing, transitions and pacing. Julia Ruchman penned the script for 11.17 and I have only good things about her work in this episode, the overall writing was brilliant and the dialogue felt right. Overseen by Angela Kang, the writing for this episode is consistent of the previous episodes in Part 1 and 2 if not better. The episode uses the big budget wisely, making it brilliant both technically and the acting and so on, the camera work are brilliant and visually a great episode, an overall impressive production. This is also the first episode of Part 3 and honestly, everything just looks better like they got a much bigger budget to work with and I loved the extended intro sequence.

Greg Nicotero directed "Lockdown" and honestly I don't think he have directed one single bad episode in the entire series run, 11.17 is no different as there are superb drama full with suspension and tension. There are so many great scenes in this episode and there's not one single bad performance throughout the entire episode. Scenes that are beautifully shot, scenes that are acted with such brilliance, and every other department and people working on the episode, terrific work. The close ups used, the attention to detail and all the shots in the nature, they nailed it on the camera side of things. The cinematography is once again breathtaking and incredible, just right for the show, the way it was shot and so on, simply brilliant. The sets were detailed and perfect, and so are the art and production design. I also found the effects to be fantastic in this episode, practical effects always makes it so more real, and The Walking Dead is known for their practical effects and they didn't let us down for this episode. Superb sound design and a musical score both gripping and dramatic. It's one of many things on the technical side of things that the show succeeds perfectly with.

"Lockdown" has lots of things that fans of The Walking Dead will like. It's the mid-season premiere of S11C and I anticipated it to be big and it was, building upon the events of the previous episode and thus giving us a memorable and brilliant episode, an action packed one. There were lots of things happening in this episode and no performances truly stood out but I found Josh Hamilton as Lance Hornsby and Michael James Shaw as Mercer to be among the best. But honestly, it was so great to see almost everyone of the cast in the episode, though they didn't get much screen time they were not ignored and I like that. But the action in this episode, the gore and violence, Greg Nicotero directed the hell out of this episode. Simply brilliant.

I hope S11C will be great, it sure started off strong, but I have one criticism in this episode and it's how the Commonwealth soldiers are dumbed down pretty immensely which I didn't feel on quite the same level before. I also got a feeling this story arc will be rushed, but I hope not. "Lockdown" was a great episode of TWD.

"Lockdown" raises compelling questions about the nature of community and the lengths people will go to protect their own interests
fernandoschiavi5 April 2024
Hiding from Lance's soldiers in an abandoned town and concerned for those in the group still at the Commonwealth, the group decides to send Negan in as a spy since no one knows him there. Together, Daryl and Negan ambush a group of soldiers with the help of Negan's old Whisperer mask and Negan steals a vehicle. Negan arrives at the Commonwealth where he is privately interrogated by Mercer and reveals his identity to him. Negan then is reunited with Carol. Meanwhile some of the citizens turn rogue and begin hunting Sebastian. Desperate, Pamela strikes an uneasy deal with Carol. Carol and Negan locate Sebastian and safely deliver him to Pamela. At the same time, the others engage in a cat and mouse game with Lance's soldiers, killing several before they end up in a standoff.

In this episode, tensions rise as the Commonwealth enforces a lockdown following the discovery of an escaped prisoner, leading to a series of dramatic events that challenge the survivors' trust in their new community.

The episode begins with the discovery of the escaped prisoner, triggering a lockdown that causes panic among the survivors. As they try to navigate the chaos, they are forced to confront their fears and doubts, leading to moments of introspection and conflict.

One of the standout scenes in "Lockdown" is when Daryl and Rosita discover evidence that the prisoner may have had help from within the Commonwealth. This revelation shakes the survivors' trust in their new community, raising questions about the true nature of the Commonwealth and its leadership.

Thematically, "Lockdown" explores the idea of trust and betrayal, highlighting the challenges of rebuilding society in a post-apocalyptic world. The episode raises compelling questions about the nature of community and the lengths people will go to protect their own interests.

In conclusion, "Lockdown" is a tense and gripping episode that explores the complexities of trust and betrayal in the post-apocalyptic world of "The Walking Dead." With its dramatic events, intense scenes, and thought-provoking themes, this episode is a standout in the final season of the series.

The Logic Is Nonexistent!
gbarrett-399413 November 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I know it's a fantasy show! I know it's about zombies! I know it used to be good, but it is apparent that either the writers are tired or the directors and editors don't care. The logic of the military in the Commonwealth makes no sense. How do you get surrounded by walkers in an open field when you could just run to the rescue vehicle. The walkers just walk. The soldiers could have run back to the compound. This show no longer brings suspense. It is a shadow of the show that used to be the buzz of social media every week. I'm glad that Rick, Carl, and Michonne aren't around to see what their merry band has become. I was hoping it would go out with the excitement of the first few season, but alas it ends in a whimper.

Action packed like 11x01 & 11x09, with the Commonwealth War plot finally moving forward.
frankiesilver-918367 October 2022
We are in the final stretch now. The last batch of episodes for The Walking Dead. The beginning of the end... and honestly, this was pretty damn great.

This feels like a final season finally. The new intro adds a lot, and so does the general scope and tone. The pace is thankfully different from Season 11B.

We get some amazing action here. Daryl and co. Fighting troops was super exciting, and so was Mercer and Rosita battling the horde. We also got a lot of really badass kills with some awesome teamwork from Negan and Daryl.

It's so satisfying to see that no matter how well-armed the troops are, they're no match for our much more experienced group.

Finally having the riots back at the Commonwealth advances the plot and adds a lot of necessary tension to make this feel like a big final storyline. We get so much more of Pamela, and seeing her try to defend the Milton name is compelling.

Another great addition to this episode is Negan meeting Commonwealth characters. His sly nature and Mercer's stonecoldness are a great contrast. I hope we get more of them together. I love that Mercer is learning that bending the rules is what's gonna keep the Commonwealth standing. Negan meeting Sebastian was arguably even cooler. Having these two interact is long overdue.

Carol and Jerry hiding the kids from Lance's people adds even more thrill. I was genuinely frightened for them throughout. Part of what makes Commonwealth so interesting is seeing out group handle these sticky situations without just killing.

The troops tear-gassing the citizens builds up this divisions between the people and the government. S*** is finally hitting the fan within the Commonwealth, not just outside its walls!

It's fantastic to see Negan and Carol reunite. Both their chemistry and Daryl and Maggie's is making it sink in how much I'll mist seeing them all together. Fantastic premiere, and one of the best episodes of the season.

Very Much A Strong Opening
justdan20233 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This episode is soooooooo good, very much better than the whole whole season 11 A and B combined. It definitely is a strong premiere and I was in the constant danger of falling down my chair due to sitting to the farthest edge because of the tense action scenes lol.

Daryl is great, Maggie is a bit underused in this episode and it was nice to see Negan and Carol works together again. And the opening is beautiful.

And the intro, goddamn, I love the intro for this half of the season. 10 main actors added! Extended theme made by the god himself, Bear Mcreary, and the brand new eerie ominous shots. In my opinion, I think this intro is the best one yet.

However, I can't help to point out that there are a few plot holes here and there, but aside from that, this episode has been great and I can't wait for the rest of the Last 8 Episodes.

Action-packed mid-season opener
Leofwine_draca1 December 2022
And so we're moving into the final stretch of the show now, with just eight episodes left. This one carries on the old tradition of mid-season openers by being action packed which works in its favour. There are plenty of prowling zombies, gore sequences and extras getting bumped off, although in terms of concrete plotting it's far more limited and mainly focuses on a protest. It always amuses me how heavy-handed these shows are with their political references, hence the 'lockdown' episode title and protest content. Still, it's pretty good as far as 'new' WALKING DEAD episodes go, and I look forward to the next.

Just let it end soon
dreamolanden6 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
With the finally coming up, I gotta say, I'm super happy.

I started watching this show in 2011 and my interest was good until 2019. I'll watch till the end, as a want to know the complete television version of the story, but it's just not very good anymore. Asia is currently dominating everything related to zombies, while The Walking Dead, the frontrunner of Zombie Shows are getting so trained "military personal" of Mercer crew, is so stupid he get himself killed in an open field of zombies and only 1 direction blocked...

So a person surviving for what, 15 years? Are now gonna die from what you would expect idiots in the first few days to die like.

Just terrible..
BubbleFart7 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This is imo THE worst episode yet, even worse than the sleepfest non-action ones.

There is one scene where Daryl is driving towards Hornsby who slowly takes aim at him and still misses every shot.. Now I don't mind plot armor, but at least make it believable!

Then you have a scene where someone is grabbed by zombies and is calling for help but none of the three armed characters close to him shoots at the zombies pulling him. Instead they reach their hands to him and I burst into laughter (probably not intended to be funny)..

There's also very bad acting from just about everyone which leads to some unconvincing scenes (like the candlelight vigil and the protests).

At the end I just sat there feeling empty and nauseas, thanks.

This show is such a disappointment
Dancertw133 October 2022
I'm not sure how this show is on the air still and I can't believe the season premiere that I just watched. These are the final episodes?! What happened to the grit and realness off the show? There are too many characters, most of which cannot act. No wonder Andrew Lincoln left. The show has become such a joke. The commonwealth is so stupid. I have no anxiety (in a good way) the way I used to when I watched this show. I used to sit on the edge of my seat worried about who would die. Now it's just absolute nonsense. I'm not sure who wrote these last few seasons but they should be ashamed. And there are spin offs coming?! Why? This show has lost its magic. Let it die.

Just end it already
umichjal7 October 2022
I found my self laughing throughout this episode. First time in awhile that this has happened. Writing is predictable. Storylines are somewhere between Pluto and the outer solar system. Negan, Carol, and Darryl carry the show. Start a new show with the the three of them and I am happy. These stormtroopers have got to go. Put the core group back out of the road. The show moves better and has more suspense when they are moving in the open. While this is the end, I am not said. The show should have ended seasons ago. Thank you for many great years but it is now time to say goodbye. And I say goodbye.

Bots giving this 10 stars
roberthy-228466 October 2022
Don't believe the bots rating this episode and 11x16 with 10 stars this commonwealth arc is very bad since 11x14 full of plots hole and Deus Ex Machina moments and not counting the preditalism we all know that Maggie,Daryl and Carol are not dying! Unlikechrisstone4 said i believe that season 9 was excellent and part of season 10 too even the Whisperers ending, season 11 started very well Reapers arc was good only the beginning and ending the rest was meh they felt like filler but unfortunaly Commonwealth arc is worse all the tension brought by 11x12 and 11x13 was watered down and went downhill in 11x14!

Gone is the magic
missykathleen-3841931 October 2022
This was so boring. The best part was the opening theme song. I miss the magic that the first few seasons had. The only scenes I like to watch now are with Neegan. I still love Darryl and Carol, but literally everybody else has to go. It was a much better show when it was actually about zombies. Now it is only about politics and we have enough of that. They live in a city with all the luxuries most people don't even have today. Put them back on the trail.

I'm going to stick through the end to find out how this ends, but I hope we get a taste of what it was years ago. Somehow, I don't believe that is going to happen.

Meh, pretty average
chrisstone43 October 2022
Like most fans i was hoping we'd see a return to form like the early seasons, but there's very little sense of drama or fear or tension. Each scene just seems to slope along one after another without anything to really grab you. Whatever magic this show had in the first 5-6 seasons went byebye some time ago. We can only hope that the directors/producers rediscover some form before the end and wow us with a decent ending, but i'm not that hopeful on current form. It will be a strange feeling when this show ends. On the one hand it'll be a shrug of the shoulders, on the other hand it'll leave a big void (the show that it WAS back in the early days). I wonder what the TV gods have in store for us.
