Jenny Slate is returning to one of her most beloved creative outlets: Processing deep personal change through writing the sort of book that only she could write. The comedian, actress, producer and New York Times best-selling author will release her second essay collection Lifeform on Oct. 22. Slate will tackle her journey through motherhood in all its nearly impossible-to-describe strangeness, complexity and life-altering beauty.
“Completing this new work was a singular pleasure,” she says. “I dove deep, and I think I’ve surfaced more alive than ever, and I am so eager to share it all with anyone who is willing and ready. I know I am!”
The book follows her 2019 debut Little Weirds, which began as a creative exercise in the wake of her 2016 divorce and eventually explored more abstract topics from her life like her relationships with love and feminism and the home in which she grew up. Lifeform...

The trailer buzz was worrisome, advance ticket sales anemic. Then last week, the critic reviews for Madame Web were posted, and they stung deepest of all — Sony’s Spider-Man spinoff received the lowest average Rotten Tomatoes score (13 percent) of any major superhero film in nearly a decade.
“On Wednesday night, you could actually watch advance purchase sales declining in real time as buyers were refunding their tickets,” marvels a major theatrical chain executive. “It really says something when you’d rather have Shazam! 2 numbers.”
It marked one of the lowest starts in Hollywood history for a film based on a Marvel character. Domestic box office for the first six days in North America was just $26.2 million after opening midweek on Valentine’s Day. International tallied $25.7 million from 61 markets. Even the fan-friendly CinemaScore grade was poor (C+ — extremely low for a superhero title).

Disney+ has unveiled a slate of Korean originals, as the streaming platform opts for a more targeted strategy in Asia.

One of the biggest titles in the Disney+ announcement is Blood Free, which stars Ju Jihoon (Kingdom) and Han Hyojoo (Moving). It follows a former bodyguard haunted by the failures of his past. Sherlock Jr..I don’t know what I expected. For some reason, when booking my plane ticket from Chicago to Muskegon, Michigan, I just assumed it would be a “normal,” albeit probably smaller, plane that would chariot us intrepid travelers to the neighboring state. So when I turned up at O’Hare, I thought nothing of being asked to provide my weight and having my carry-on bags weighed as well, nothing of the smaller-than-usual waiting area, nothing of taking an elevator directly to the tarmac rather than descending via the usual jet bridge. The sight of the nine-seat Cessna shouldn’t have surprised me, but it did. More disconcerting was the passenger who reveled in telling the lot of us why the plane flew around Lake Michigan, not across it: in case it crashed, it could more easily be found. This seemed an appropriate way to get to the International Buster Keaton Society's 2023 Convention,...

An unforgettable Amy Poehler/Jimmy Fallon anecdote from their “Saturday Night Live” days has been recirculating on social media in the wake of Fallon being called out in a Rolling Stone article for creating a toxic workplace as host of “The Tonight Show.”
In a memorable anecdote from Poehler “SNL” bestie Tina Fey’s autobiography “Bossypants,” Fey opens a chapter praising Amy with the story of when she blasted Fallon’s gender-normative response to her comedic style. The story was shared to X (formerly known as Twitter) by The New Yorker’s Erin Overbey, who wrote, “Tina Fey had Jimmy Fallon dead to rights more than a decade ago.”
Fey was both “SNL’s” head writer and co-anchor of “Weekend Update” alongside Jimmy Fallon at the time. She set up the story, explaining, “Amy Poehler was new to ‘SNL’ and we were all crowded into the seventeenth-floor writers’ room, waiting...

The New York Times’ film critic A.O. Scott is moving to a new beat.
Scott, who has reviewed more than 2,200 films for the Times over the last 23 years, will shift to The New York Times Book Review where he will “write critical essays, notebooks and reviews that grapple with literature, ideas and intellectual life,” according to a memo to Times staff from Sam Sifton, Gilbert Cruz and Sia Michel Tuesday.
“In many ways this is a natural progression,” they added in the note. “Tony was a literature concentrator at Harvard, graduating magna cum laude in 1987, and is a graduate-school dropout in American literature (Johns Hopkins: thank you, next!). He started his journalism career as an assistant to Robert Silvers at The New York Review of Books and was soon contributing reviews there, as well as to Slate and, of course, to Newsday.”

What happens to a one-hit-wonder girlband when their allocated 15 minutes of fame comes to an abrupt end, and they’re no longer the hottest young things in coordinated but subtly different outfits?
It’s a question answered in all-singing, all-dancing style by effervescent sitcom Girls5eva, which debuted on US streamer Peacock in 2021 but is now finally available to stream on Netflix, where a third season will arrive later this year. Created by Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt writer Meredith Scardino and exec-produced by Tina Fey, this underrated gem has enough energy and emotion to fill stadiums, and more Nineties-style pop treats than an ancient Now That’s What I Call Music disc. It’s This Is Spinal Tap for turn-of-the-millennium girl groups, turning the synths up to 11.

Paul McCartney called The Beatles‘ 1963 tour with Roy Orbison a “historic moment.” It was the “Pretty Woman” singer’s first tour of the U.K. and The Beatles’ third. The Fab Four had yet to conquer the U.S., but it was safe to say they’d already taken their country by storm, so much so that they became co-headliners with Orbison, originally the headlining act.
However, there was no competition between The Beatles and Orbison. They inspired each other.

“Wonder Woman 3” might be canceled, but fans won’t have to say goodbye to the Amazons permanently. As part of presentation of upcoming DC Films projects Tuesday, studio heads James Gunn and Peter Safran announced “Paradise Lost,” a live-action series exploring the origins of the godlike, all-women society.
The series will take place before the birth of Diana Prince — who of course eventually becomes Wonder Woman — exploring how the island of Themyscira came to exist in the first place. And according to Gunn and Safran, it will draw inspiration from a much darker source than fans might expect.
“It’s going to be a ‘Game of Thrones’-ish story about Themyscira, Paradise Island, the home of the Amazons and it’s also the birthplace of Wonder Woman,” Safran said. “This drama, it’s really about the political intrigue behind a society of all women.”

James Gunn has made good on his promise to announce his first projects since taking over as the head of DC Studios with Peter Safran. James Gunn’s official DC Slate was revealed at a private press event on the Warner Bros lot in Burbank that out own JimmyO was lucky enough to attend yesterday. In his opening remarks, Gunn mentioned the plan was to go from Shazam: Fury of the Gods to The Flash to Blue Beetle to Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom to (gasp) Superman. And indeed, the Man of Steel will be returning in a film called Superman: Legacy (to be written by Gunn himself) which is due out on July 11th, 2025, and will be the first feature to be made by Gunn’s group. No director or cast announced yet. The Batman – Part II will also be a 2025 release, with Gunn confirming an October 3rd, 2025 release date.

DC Studios co-ceo James Gunn spoke about former Superman actor Henry Cavill’s exit as the Man of Steel at the Dcu presentation on the Warners lot on Monday, clarifying that he and co-ceo Peter Safran didn’t fire Cavill and adding that the “Man of Steel” actor was unfortunately “dicked around by a lot of people.”
Cavill delighted fans in last year when he made a surprise appearance as Superman in “Black Adam,” then revealed soon after that he was fully ready to once again don the red cape for DC Studios and Warner Bros. Discovery. And for a short while, his return seemed like a sure thing.
Post-“Black Adam,” Cavill promised future appearances as the last son of Krypton while Dwayne Johnson publicly touted his own vision for Black Adam and Superman in the DC Universe. But when Gunn and Safran were installed as co-CEOs to create...

Rather than run to the nearest beach in search of some sun, I spent the majority of this past weekend playing The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD on Nintendo Switch. I simply couldn’t resist the opportunity to revisit a classic (if divisive) Zelda game.
“Classic” is certainly the keyword here. Unlike Breath of the Wild’s free and open atmosphere, Skyward Sword emphasizes a somewhat telegraphed fantasy adventure made in the mold of Ocarina of Time, Twilight Princess, and other, more traditional, 3D Zelda entries. Are there drawbacks to that template? Sure, but utterly excellent dungeon design isn’t one of them.
Walking into Skyview Temple, the game’s first dungeon, I was instantly reminded of just how mesmerizing those large-scale puzzle boxes can be. It especially hits home at that moment since, up until that point, the game inundates you with character conversations, petty fetch quests, and combat tutorials,...
