The first trailer has been unveiled for Cannes, Emmy and Peabody-winning director Marc Levin’s documentary “It’s Basic,” which will have its world premiere at the Tribeca Festival.
The film examines several pilot programs launched in the U.S. that test the effects of giving everyday people an extra $500 to $1,000 monthly, with no strings attached. It aims to present an unbiased account of the benefits, criticisms, and outcomes of providing unconditional money to people in need, and examines whether Basic Income pilot programs eradicate child poverty and level the racial playing field through community-centric solutions.
The documentary features commentary by Michael Tubbs, the founder of Mayors for Guaranteed Income. At 26, Tubbs became mayor of Stockton, California. Under his stewardship, the city saw a 40% drop in homicides in 2018 and 2019, led the state in the decline of officer-involved shootings in 2019, was named the second most financially healthy city in California and...

CNN's new eight-part docuseries “Chicagoland,” debuting Thursday, will be a lot more impressive if you've never seen “Brick City.” The filmmakers behind that masterful Sundance Channel series, Marc Levin and Mark Benjamin, have joined with Robert Redford on “Chicagoland,” which explores the problems facing America's third-largest city. In “Brick City,” the blueprint for the new show, Levin and Benjamin dissected Newark, N.J., a once-hopeless place that has made real improvements since “Brick City” first aired in 2009. Also read: ‘Brick City': What Reality TV Should Be (and Mark Zuckerberg, Too) “Brick City” is probably the best docuseries I've ever seen,...

"They pull a knife? You pull a gun. He sends one of yours to the hospital? You send one of his to the morgue. That's the Chicago way." The famous quote from "The Untouchables," Brain De Palma's Academy Award-winning film set during Al Capone's 1930s heyday, still hovers over a city whose history is awash with gang violence. In "Chicagoland," CNN's new eight-part original series from "Brick City" producers Marc Levin and Mark Benjamin premiering tonight, March 6th, at 9pm, that 80+ year old mentality still rings frighteningly true. But "Chicagoland" isn't just focused on gangs: the series, which is executive produced by Robert Redford and Laura Michalchyshyn of Sundance Productions, strives to show how gangs affect crime, crime affects schools, schools affect policy and policy changes lives in America's third largest city. The first episode focuses on the 2013 battle between Mayor Rahm Emanuel and the Chicago Teacher's Union over the impending closure of 54 schools.

"Jersey Strong," the new unscripted series premiering on Participant Media's recently launched network Pivot tomorrow, September 14, at 10:30pm, is about two Newark-based couples. Creep and Jayda are a reformed Crip and Blood working together to improve their community, and Brooke Barnett and Mag Voelkel are a trial attorney and the life and business partner with whom she's raising two kids. They're subjects who were part of producers Mark Benjamin and Marc Levin's previous docu-series "Brick City," a Peabody Award-winning look at Newark under its young mayor Cory Booker. In "Jersey Strong," Benjamin and Levin have essentially repackaged the social themes and some of the people from their earlier show in a poppier, less heavy package -- what Pivot is referring to as a "docu-soap." Indiewire caught up with the pair on the phone to talk about what it was like to work in the language of reality TV.

The fact that Pivot, a new network for millennials, is launching Aug. 1, the date MTV hit television in 1981, is purely coincidental. But here’s something that isn’t: The first thing Pivot will air at 6 a.m. Et on Thursday is a video for “Video Killed the Radio Star.”
You may recall that the Buggles’ video was the first one played on MTV 32 years ago. For its update, which celebrates a new generation’s creative power, Pivot recorded independent artists live all over Los Angeles, including Run River North, Goldspot, London Thor, Far and Away, Musical Mammal and Rainbow Jackson.

On April 7, Mike Wallace, the lion of the TV news magazine died. Wallace was more than a news man. He was a former actor and game show host who found a way to seamlessly blend news and entertainment into a combination that was far more than a sum of its parts. Wallace -- first on Night Beat, then on 60 Minutes -- didn't just investigate or report. He turned interviewing into a blood sport -- becoming both one of the most liked and feared men on television as a result. He brought the same intensity and enthusiasm to every interview -- be it entertainers, world leaders or criminals -- even once calling Ayatollah Khomeini a lunatic, to his face.
This got him into trouble at times -- settling a lawsuit with General Westmoreland; losing a battle with CBS over a tobacco industry whistleblower -- but it also made him something rare...

Bill Streeter is the award-winning producer of the internet video program, Lo-Fi Saint Louis, which showcases our city’s best musicians, artists and burlesque queens. For his first feature-length documentary, Streeter chose a subject that, on the surface may have seemed like an odd choice: Brick, or specifically, St. Louis’ distinctive red brick. Streeter got the idea for his doc when his out-of-town friends kept commenting on the beauty of St. Louis’ brick buildings. The resulting film, Brick By Chance And Fortune: A St. Louis Story is proof that in the right hands, a film about a subject that may seem narrow, in this case building material, can transcend its limitations and entertain and inform (read the Wamg review Here). It’s an outstanding film and after seeing it, you will never look at our city’s buildings the same way again.

A year ago, John Boyega was a name that nobody knew. And, okay, it’s probably still a name that a lot of people aren’t familiar with. But if the hype he’s been getting from film critics for his starring role in this summer’s Attack the Block is any indication, Boyega won’t be able to enjoy anonymity for very much longer. Attack the Block director Joe Cornish found Boyega performing in a small stage show in London and cast him in his hoods versus aliens monster movie based on that. One to take his work seriously, first-time film actor Boyega then took to studying season 4 of The Wire to get a handle on how to approach playing an urban youth, and brought reality to the character of Moses, in a performance that felt genuine and raw even when there was tons of alien monster insanity going on around it. After a cameo in The Hangover brought Mike Tyson back into the public eye a couple of years ago, his new career in showbiz is now "flourishing" with a reality TV show on Animal Planet and co-hosting duties for Comedy Central's roast of Charlie Sheen. But more importantly, he is currently setting up a boxing drama for TV with the help of Spike Lee and Entourage creator Doug Ellin. This week it was announced that HBO has ordered a pilot for the project, which is going under the title Da Brick (a reference to the Newark, NJ setting, which is also known as The Brick City). They've also already found a lead for the show in John Boyega, the star of Joe Cornish's breakout hit Attack the Block. Count me in. The kids these days may know him as the man with the Tiger in The Hangover, but people as old as me remember him as “The Baddest Man on the Planet”. I’m talking about Mike Tyson, who’s life is being brought to HBO in the form a of a TV series.
THR reports that the network has ordered a pilot for Da Brick, which is “loosely based on Tyson’s early life in the ring and “will reflect aspects of Tyson’s upbringing”. The project is to be directed by Spike Lee and John Ridley will write and serve as showrunner. The show will take place in Newark, N.J., which is often dubbed “Brick City”. If you need some Tyson to hold you over until this project arrives, check out James Toback’s 2008 documentary Tyson, it’s fantastic.

Hollywoodnews.com: Spike Lee and “Entourage” creator Doug Ellin want to get in the ring with Mike Tyson, and HBO is helping to make it happen.

Although we critics spend a lot of time decrying Hollywood's tendency to greenlight scripts based on easy comparisons ('It's like Twilight crossed with The A-Team wearing a pair of overalls'"), there's no one that likes that kind of shorthand more than a critic. It's as easy for us to review a show by comparing it to another one as it is for Hollywood to market a movie the same way (It's like The Hangover with Mexican dwarf brides!).
And so, it seems, every cop show that's been reviewed since the greatest cop show of all time left the air has been compared -- favorably or unfavorably -- to "The Wire." We here at Pajiba are as guilty of it as anyone -- in fact, of the five shows below, we made at least one comparison to "The Wire" in our reviews of four of them, and three of those were...

One almost certain location for filming is Osterley Park House in West London which is closing in two weeks for several days of private hire according to Batman News. It's expected interiors of Wayne Manor will be shot here during those days.
There's also talk of some shooting to take place at Inverness Airport in Scotland later this month.
Meanwhile, Showbiz 411 reports that Matthew Modine's character in the film will be "a politician and a key villain" who goes by the name of Nixon.

I'm here in Austin with a significant portion of the other Pajiba overlords attending SXSW. For some, this means the chance to see movies that have a very slim chance of ever being shown outside the festival circuit, or a first look at films that aren't in wide release yet. For others (me) it means a chance to collect all the free shit one can get their hands on. So far, the easiest free stuff to get is candy (got handed a pack of gum by AOL and Microsoft just had chocolate bars in stacks around their whole area), free alcohol is somewhere in the middle (if you're a badge holder there's a couple places just giving out booze like it's going bad though occasionally they limit the number of drinks you can have per day) and the hardest thing to find is actual food but I got that today.

"Brick City," which airs its second season finale Sunday, is everything reality TV could and should be. The series, which follows Newark Mayor Cory Booker as he tries to lead one of the country's most troubled cities, is a real-life "The Wire." But imagine the HBO classic with less disgust at failing institutions and more hope that right-minded people can fix them. Also read: Blizzard Blows Newark Mayor's Twitter Feed Into National Spotlight Sunday's finale of the Sundance Channel's Peabody-award winning series couldn't include more real-life drama -- or inspire more awe in...

It's cloudy and drizzly today, but I tend not to mind that as much on Sundays as I do on other days. Mostly because it gives me an excellent excuse for laying around on the couch watching whatever awful movies are being broadcast that day and possibly napping, which is usually what I want to do on Sundays anyway but I feel less guilty about it when the weather's bad and because it is a weekend I actually can stay home all day in my pajamas without consequences. I hope that everyone else out there is having a nice Sunday afternoon and evening, however you choose to spend it. Here's your Sunday night TV:

The Grammys are on tonight, which gives us all another chance to realize that when it comes to certain genres of music the Academy of Recording Sciences has no credibility anymore. However, I will grant that Ke$ha managed to have one of the best selling albums of the year (Why?!?) and did not receive any Grammy nominations so there's a slim chance someone is paying attention. Not the programming director, though, who decided to schedule the divine Janelle Monáe to perform on stage with Bruno Mars and B.o.B. (tangentially: that individual's name always makes me think of Outkat's "B.O.B" and then I get excited and then super disappointed in a split second. That kind of emotional whiplash is good for no one.) I'll be watching, though I can't promise I'll be in a good mood about it. Here's your Sunday night TV:

TV Guide Magazine caught up with Forest Whitaker on the set of Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior, the CBS spin-off debuting February 16 in which he stars as FBI Agent Sam Cooper. He was happy to talk about his new procedural and also about Brick City, the Peabody Award-winning reality show that he produces about the struggles of Newark, New Jersey and its mayor Cory Booker. The riveting series — a sort of nonfiction version of The Wire — returns for Season 2 on February 6. (Sundance Channel, 8/7c)

Tomorrow morning I'm scheduled to get my cast off which is not so much exciting as it is a massive relief. Of course, once the cast is off and I'm no longer complaining about how the cast interferes with my left hand's typing ability, I'll be complaining about having to re-learn how to type with my left hand after four weeks of not using it. You all have so much to look forward to in the next week! Here's your Sunday night TV:

Forest Whitaker is reportedly facing legal action over a factual documentary that he produced. The actor, who won an Oscar for his portrayal of Idi Amin in The Last King of Scotland, served as executive producer on five-episode Sundance Channel series Brick City, according to AllHipHop. Brick City focused on the city of Newark, and the violence, poverty and corruption that had gripped the area for 50 years. However, author Everett Adam Jackson claims that the title (more)...

Best documentary at the Oscars is, like best foreign language film, the type of category that seems invented to be grumbled over, with selections and winners rarely reflecting the films everyone else in the world finds most worthy of praise. So it's much less frustrating to look to organizations like the International Documentary Association for better indicators of the docs that are the cream of 2010's crop.
The nominees for the 2010 Ida Documentary Awards were announced today, and the contenders for the top prize include Banksy's "Exit Through The Gift Shop," a personal favorite; Laura Poitras' Al-Qaeda saga "The Oath"; Joonas Berghaell and Mika Hotakainen's look at Finnish sauna culture "Steam of Life"; Ilisa Barbash and Lucien Castaing-Taylor's trailing of Montana sheepherders "Sweetgrass"; and Lucy Walker's tale of making art of trash "Waste Land," opening in New York on Friday. The awards will take place in L.

Whitaker Sued Over Documentary
Forest Whitaker is facing legal action over a TV documentary about New Jersey which he produced for America's Sundance Channel.
The Oscar-winner acted as an executive producer on factual five-episode show Brick City, which focuses on the troubled history of the city of Newark, which was plagued by almost 50 years of violence, poverty and corruption.
Author Everett Adam Jackson claims he trademarked the title Brick City for his 1991 novel of the same name and he has now filed suit against Whitaker and executives at the Sundance Channel alleging they have infringed his copyright.
He has filed papers at the District Court of New Jersey claiming he is the legal owner of the name Brick City and also accusing TV bosses of using parts of his narrative in the series. Jackson has also named New Jersey Mayor Corey Booker as a defendant.
He is seeking more than $20 million (£13,3 million) in damages, according to Allhiphop.com.

The Shady One lands on his feet in Vma Video of the Year nominee.

Eminem was on edge after the release of his Relapse album, his first project after a five-year layoff during which he battled depression and drug dependency. The stakes were high for the Shady One, and although Relapse landed atop the charts — and scored the biggest-selling rap release of 2009 — the heralded Detroit lyricist received lukewarm reviews for the collection.
So yes, he was back, but, in a sense, he hadn't quite made his return.
But then he unleashed a vicious freestyle while visiting Tim Westwood in the U.K., and followed that up with his dominating verse on Drake's superstar-laden "Forever" collabo. Ahead of the release of Recovery, Em dropped his official comeback anthem, the reflective "Not Afraid."

Over the course of film history, there have been many releases that have been great. There's a smaller list of flicks that can be described as "classic," and then there are only a few that are "transcendent." And then there's "The Wizard of Oz," a film that exists in a completely different universe than everything else. On this day in 1939, it made its premiere at the Strand Theatre in Oconomowoc, Wisconsin. The story, as it happens, is relatively simple: A young girl growing up on a farm in Kansas gets swept up by a tornado and into a magical alternate universe full of witches, talking lions, a race of people called Munchkins and a powerful wizard who may not be everything he seems.
Directed by Victor Fleming, "The Wizard of Oz" is an incredible accomplishment. It showed the world the possibilities of Technicolor, turned a handful of songs (written by Harold Arlen and E.

I hardly know where to begin so I'm just going to post this press release as is. I've really enjoyed low budget stuff like Mirage Man and the like over the years and I just saw the trailer for Dinner With An Assassin. I am officially intrigued enough to keep tabs on these guys. They seem to know exactly what level of energy they can sustain on a budget and I'm curious what thy would do with some real money.
