Moving and funny, excellent.

With scurvy a problem on board, the crew are in desperate need of vitamin c, they need oranges from Saint Augustine.

Great to finally learn a little bit more about Jim, every character is being explored, every single character has a meaning, it's truly so very well written, and once again, beautifully acted.

I really enjoyed the story, and I found it funny, the standard just seems to be getting better and better, this was yet another great episode. Some truly heart felt moments.

There genuinely were some belly churning laugh out loud moments throughout this one, that scene with Blackbeard and the snake, that had me howling, it was so funny. I also chuckled at that moment where Lucius gave Blackbeard what for.

9/10.

Pretty great episode, it's a little less funny than the previous 3 episodes but it's still really great and some of the characters get more fleshed out.

What are they, Christ's oranges?
magicalmrmistofelees4 October 2023
A late-season episode that goes out of its way to focus a decent portion of its time and energy on a side character can sometimes be a risk, but here it was honestly such a phenomenal choice. Our main characters still get their time in the spotlight, but without carrying so much of the burden of plot/conflict as in prior episodes. Instead, we get to hang out with Oluwande and Jim, as some final important details of Jim's backstory come to light, and they are set on an interesting new path.

Meanwhile, Blackbeard and Bonnet are able to fully sink into their rom-com thing, to give us that lovely sweet period of act two before things (unfortunately, inevitably) come crashing down.

This episode clinched it for me. Laughed out loud multiple time. The timing, the writing, the crazy, it all works. I am really looking forward to seeing the rest of what they do. Hoping for another season.

Jim!
givemebaretrees16 September 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This episode is a delight for a lot of reasons: Stede's little adventure is cute, we get to see Ed having his own realizations about what this means to him, but of course the main plot this episode is learning, finally, who Jim is and what they're trying to do. "Stealthy assassin raised by a murderous nun" somehow fits so well into this silly and campy show, and even as over the top as the concept is the heart of the issue comes through: they loved and missed their family, but the search for revenge is still an obligation that feels like a burden to them sometimes. And Nana such a fun character and even as she puts pressure on Jim and is clearly disappointed in them, you can't help but love Nana (the fact that Nana and Oluwande immediately hit it off doesn't hurt, either). We also get Oluwande's very sweet confession scene in this episode.

This episode adds a lot of heart to the show, while still keeping the silly tone.

Oh my god...
annabaldwin-7284417 September 2023
A fantastic episode, juggling two of the shows key romantic plotlines seemlessly.

Stede and Ed (and Lucius) on a treasure hunt, as the former tries to keep the legendary Blackbeard interested. And Jim and Oluwande visiting Jim's nan and finding out about their family's fate.

Jim's story is heartbreaking, and you can see how desperately Oluwande cares for them with a quiet and supportive strength. The portrayal of their relationship is truly beautiful.

Meanwhile, we get some hilarious improv from two masters of the art when Stede and Ed discuss Ed's potential restauranteur career.

Another wonderful ep!

The funniest scene of the series
penniellington15 September 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This one ties for me as my favorite episode, along with Ep 5 (the boat party ep).

Stede fears Ed is going to move onto to his next adventure and leave Stede behind, so he hatches a plan to get him to stay longer. He decides to make a day of treasure hunting, while the crew is stopped in St. Augstine for oranges (look, Swede is losing his teeth to scurvy, Roach needs to defend his 40 orange glaze cake recipe, and Jim needs to confess some things to her nana).

The "Snake Snackery" scene is some of the funniest dialogue every filmed. You have to see it to believe it. Everyone is pitch perfect in this episode, but that scene alone should earn the show an Emmy.

Warm, poignant, hilarious

Now THIS is a legendary episode of television!

Hilarious! The charming adventure in this ep has an A-plot and B-plot that come together at the end in the show's signature mix of warmth, joy, and humor, mixed with melancholic sadness.

And underneath it all is an ever-greater suspense and danger drawing ever-closer to our heroes (unbeknownst to them)!

This episode reveals the tragic origin story of one of our main characters, and explains their epic quest for revenge (while furthering the show's meditation on the very concepts of violence and revenge), and has several absolutely beautiful and heartwarming moments of romance and love.

Warning: Spoilers
Jim's backstory is epic and I'm glad that took the time to flesh out this character. You will come away from this episode loving oranges, treasure maps, and especially Oluwande. Everyone needs an Oluwande in their lives to keep them grounded in reality and to keep them from doing stupid things. Also, if you don't love Nana what's wrong with you?!

Everything about the snake is comedy gold especially the bit with Lucius sitting their just like we are at home wondering if this is it - is this the moment. So many delicious tropes sting together here.

Also, it's best co-captain. Lesson learned. Well, and treasure is the real treasure.

Pirates using modern pronouns? GImme a break
Amthermandes12 October 2023
Warning: Spoilers
And this show was going so well.

This is a character development episode not just for Jim, but for the relationship between Blackbeard and The Gentleman Pirate. You really begin to see what each "Captain" is willing to do for the other because the amount of respect they have for each other, and also, the amount of fascination they have with each other's lives. It's an interesting dynamic.

And Jim is a cool character, don't get me wrong. But when everybody starts referring to Jim as a "they," it's sickening. It's already been established that Jim is female. Nothing wrong with that, but the show takes it several steps further to bow to the whims of the loud and obnoxious modern minority of social gender dysphoria by insulting the female audience that Jim really isn't a "woman," but some muddled version of one.

Really? You're gonna pull this move? Give me a break. The show was so enjoyable, but then this one introduced modern social politics, corrupt politics at that, and it just ruined it.

The show suddenly got so good after episode 2 that it's possible to overlook it and try to enjoy the rest, as long as the viewer isn't constantly reminded of how "woke" the show can be. By stealing Jim's femininity, the show actually does more damage than good for the female viewers. It's like saying that it's not good enough to be "just a woman," and that you can't have a badass pirate who's just a straight character who is definitively female. What a joke.

Brilliant!
denizb334 October 2023
Magnificent pacing, humour, and emotional high notes. This episode has it all! We learn more of Jim's backstory, and the episode switches seamlessly between two sets of relationships, Jim and Oluwande, and Stede and Ed, each of which may or may not be having its own communication problems... The rest of the crew have their own shenanigans going on, of course. One of the best feelings the episode engenders, each time I watch it, is the "back to the boat" line -- what a wonderful sense of a family heading out for a day's adventure on land, then coming home to their ship at the end of a long day.

My favorite episode of S1
Encaitare17 September 2023
This is my favorite episode of season 1, and my favorite character isn't even in it. That's how good it is!

The ship runs out of oranges (because Stede insisted on using most of them in a cake) and a crew member gets scurvy. While the crew band together to help hunt for oranges, Stede purchases a treasure map and drags Ed and Lucius along with him. Both of these plots are equally engaging. The hunt for oranges leads the crew directly to an important figure from Jim's past, and we finally learn a little more of their backstory. Meanwhile, Stede and Ed bond on their treasure hunt, with some hysterical improv from both leads. It's really a pleasure to see them riffing together.

Fantastic
c-1538421 September 2023
This is a highly comedic episode with so many hilarious scenes and moments, whilst also exploring Jim's tragic backstory and contextualising their pursuit of revenge.

Rhys Darby and Taika Waititi are incredible at improvisation and this shows in various scenes throughout this episode. I cannot watch this episode without laughing so hard. It puts me in a really good mood.

In contrast to the previous episode, this one takes place mostly on land, affording the episode a range of beautiful cinematics.

This is a truly wonderful episode which both explores the characters and develops their stories, and showcases the comedic talents of its spectacular cast.

Favorite S1 episode
pinkquak_uak14 November 2023
The best episode of season one! It brings the crew to the forefront and gives lots of hilarious and small, but important, moments between crew members as well as letting the relationship between Stede and Blackbeard develop more. Some of the most iconic lines come from this episode!

I enjoy the way this episode plays with backstory, specifically Jim's, and how it relates not only to them and Oluwande but also to the direction of the show in general. The idea that everyone has a reason to be where they are on this boat not just Stede. The camerawork and lighting are so well done and set just the right tone!

Hard to pick a favorite episode in season 1 - but this is one up there
walkfearlessly24 October 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This episode is such a prime example of this show's writing being so much more detailed and hard-hitting than you would ever expect. I'm always struck with the beautiful symbolism behind oranges in this episode: oranges seem representative of love and family. In Jim's flashback, we see the Siete Gallos stealing the Jimenez family's oranges, and as they steal Jim's family from them as well.

Just after this, we get the touching line from Oluwande to Jim: "If you wanted, I could be family." And when the crew finds a petrified orange under the tree that was planted the day Jim was born: "Old tree still had some fruit to give, after all" - basically, Jim realizes that it's still possible for them to have a family and to feel love, despite everything they've lost and suffered. It always makes me emotional. <3.

Sweet, funny and telling about the characters
olivierbkkr12 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
I love this episode especially because it shows so much development and character interaction, so many characters get to show their inner selves. As Ed and Stede spend time together, hitting a few bumps, but being cuter than ever, and Lucius who is third wheeling between them is just amazing. I also LOVE the backstory of Jim and their character as a whole becomes so much more complex and deep. I love Olu and Jim's reletionship is so so sweet. Stede tries to impress Ed, who struggles with his own self image and learns to be kind to Stede even when its not soemthing he himself is super intersted in. Overal amazing cute episode full of humor and sweetness.

Blackbeard's Bar and Grill
shaugen-3520512 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
How can I have another favorite episode, but here we are. This one is titled "This is Happening" in reference to the budding romance between our two captains. They may not fully realize it, but they are both enchanted by the other and the scenes on their treasure hunt portray the genuine affection they have for each other witnessed by Lucius who is the first to really connect that romance is brewing. There is also a lot of character development about Jim where we learn their background that has led to a life focused on revenge. There are great scenes on St. Augustine while the group is trying to find oranges and Jim's nana. One of the highlights of this episode is the improv work between Taika and Rhys while they are eating snake and chatting about Blackbeard's restaurant. It's fun and shows their blossoming romantic gestures with each other. The ominous ending warns us that trouble is headed to Stede and that makes us all the more interested in getting to the next episode. Another quality episode.

so sweet

Warning: Spoilers
Incredible episode, and as much as I love angst I have to admit the light-hearted comedy of this episode was really nice. We finally got Jim's in-depth backstory which was extremely well written and the adventure was adorable.

I also loved how this whole episode revolved around oranges, seeing as they represent both eternal love and the afterlife. This was the episode where both Ed and Stede's relationship as well as Jim and Olu's were officially confirmed, even with the episode's title relating to that. On top of that, Jim's past and family are also massive themes in the episode and their tree has come to represent a sort of grave/memorial to their family, it all ties in really nicely.

We're going to have fun today, and that's an order!
blueruvy5 November 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I like choosing quotes for titles but I was absolutely spoiled for choice in this episode.

We finally get more background on Jim (and a genuine smile from them!), which shows the way these creators love playing with classic stories and tropes: the rogue revenge-seeking cowboy type? Classic. And 10 times more interesting transposed into a tropical world of pirates and blended with the 'trained killer' storyline. I adore Nana wholeheartedly but she also terrifies me.

For a show that doesn't care about accents I love that they do care enough to have some subtitled Spanish. And dear Oluwande, you had a rough go of it in this one but you tried really hard and are an absolute gem.

Stede's little adventurer outfit was so embarrassing but I wouldn't trade it for all the world, it was a masterful costuming choice based purely on *vibes*, just as Stede himself would make clothing-based decisions. And I love his comment to Jim about not really wanting to give them the orange - lest we forget that at his core Stede is an only child.

Love that we continue to see character's flaws. Stede, in the above, and then Ed's rudeness about the outing. Thank goodness Lucius was there to knock sense into him because I wanted to slap him. Which, I suppose, is how you know the storytelling is really effective.

Special shout out to Rhys and Taika's improvised Bar & Grill dialogue. Lucius was all of us in that scene. Ideal, fly on the wall, front row seat.

And of course, the plot thickens! Thrilled to see Rory Kinnear again. Though, where I would want to be a fly on the wall at Stede's campfire, you couldn't pay me to have drinks with Jackie, Izzy, and Admiral Badminton. The toxicity!

Anyway, here's to co-captains.

Adults are silly things
MooniePerez18 December 2023
This episode did something to my brain and its comprehension in how to tell a moving backstory while also subverting revenge stories and somehow wrapping a ribbon around the whole thing about family being difficult, but not how you expect. It's never the easy way to explain to others, it's the weird multi-layered conflict that always bubbles to the top. And also there is a fun treasure hunt plotline where a very rare conversation happens. We're all very used to the "You have to act cooler to impress this person" feeling, but the flipside? The "Hey, we get it, you're cool you're like a rockstar, don't F this person up." conversation happens so rarely and even more so in a way that the Cool Character is receptive to and lives up to the coolness. Love the Snake Snack Shake convo. The conversations in this show often are so silly and random they feel like the dumbahh tangents my friends and I get into.

Lucius is the ultimate relationship expert
emmaruthkg11 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
This episode is another one of my favorite of all times. The "Blackbeard's Bar and Grill: Delicacies and Delights and Fishing Equipment" scene is so funny and the fact that it is improvised adds so much to the spontaneity of the dialogue and how funny it is. Lucius is hilarious and sincere in this episode (as in EVERY episode) and I love how he stands up to Blackbeard and says what everyone in the fandom is clearly thinking.

I'm so glad Jim takes center stage in this episode as well. Their backstory is incredible, and the nun who raised them is so badass and funny and fierce and just absolutely iconic. Then Jim and Olu get a special moment and my heart melted <3.

The sweetest, funniest episode
tannihernandez26 October 2023
Warning: Spoilers
In true Our Flag Means Death style, this episode is so sweet and so heartfelt while also still managing to be totally hilarious. In an effort to keep Blackbeard entertained, Stede takes him on a treasure hunt, which turns into basically a first date (that neither of them know is a date) with Lucius third-wheeling and very much picking up on some romantic cues between the pair of them. The improvised scene about Blackbeard's imaginary bar and grill is a funny bit that really showcases the chemistry these two actors have with each other.

Meanwhile, the Swede has scurvy thanks to an inordinate use of all the ship's oranges, so the crew sets out to find some citrus on land. We get some great backstory for Jim here and some really sweet character interactions between them and Oluwande. Romantic developments for all! I love it.

Warning: Spoilers
Indisputably the best episode of television ever made thank you for your time. Oh I need to use up more characters anyway the Blackbeard's Bar and Grill and Other Delicacies and Delights and Fishing Equipment bit changed my life. Lucius's speech is absolutely iconic. The look on Ed's face after he convinces Stede to keep going with the treasure hunt?? I die. Also "I'm literally the only one here with a wooden finger" is top 10 best lines of all time. Stede wears a funny outfit which I like. Great Ed/Luciua friendship hours. I give this one a ten out of ten A+ good job you did it clapping hands emoji.
