As the world’s largest streamer prepares to host a boxing match between Jake Paul and Mike Tyson, its live sports strategy is becoming clear.
The rumors are true! Netflix is gearing up to offer its next live sporting event: a boxing match between YouTube star Jake Paul and former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson. The fight is coming to Netflix on July 20, and it’s just the latest example of the streamer’s emerging strategy of using live sports events to promote its on-demand content.
All of Netflix’s live sports offerings thus far have been related to an on-demand title on the streamer in some way. The streamer has been connected to Formula 1 racing in the past, and has also reportedly shown interest in acquiring its own sports league. Netflix has ordered an untitled documentary about the Canadian exit of the Montreal Expos Major League Baseball club nearly 20 years ago.
Jean-François Poisson will direct the film as part of a partnership with Montreal-based indie producer Attraction. The greenlight from Netflix Canada also comes as the streaming giant expands into sports-related content after the success of the Formula 1 docuseries Drive to Survive and golf docuseries Full Swing.
Netflix has followed that up with its first live sports event, a nine-hole golf match called the Netflix Cup and to feature athletes familiar to viewers of Drive to Survive and Full Swing. Netflix is joining a number of other subscription video on-demand services — including Peacock, Apple TV+, Paramount+ and Max — in offering live sports to its subscribers, and without embracing expensive rights packages.

Some of you may not know this, but a few of us here on JoBlo have our roots in Montreal. I’m certainly one of them and one of the things I most remember about growing up in the city during the nineties was going to see baseball games at the Olympic stadium with my father on Friday nights. Indeed, I was always excited to see the Montreal Expos play, and for a lot of us, losing our baseball franchise was traumatic, with the team departing in 2004 to become the Washington Nationals.
Now, Netflix is green-lighting a documentary series about that infamous event, with the streamer making the announcement today. The series will be produced in Montreal by a local company called Attraction, which was signed recently to produce French-language docs for the streamer. It’s unknown if this will be done in French, English or – in true Montreal fashion – a mixture of both.

Netflix has picked up an untitled documentary about the Montreal Expos and the events surrounding the Major League Baseball team’s departure in 2004. The doc, which the streamer has confirmed exclusively to Variety, reps Netflix’s next original project out of Canada.
The doc is the first greenlit under Netflix’s new creative partnership with Montreal-based Attraction. Netflix signed a first-look deal with Attraction last November, for French-language film projects to be developed and produced by the company.
Jean-François Poisson will direct the untitled baseball doc. Marie-Christine Pouliot, Attraction’s head producer, documentary, and Richard Speer, president of Attraction, will executive produce.
According to Netflix, the film explores the setbacks that led to the departure of the Expos from Montreal and how the loss of an MLB team in Montreal continues to spark debate 20 years later.
Some of those setbacks included fee disputes between the city and Expos owner Jeffrey Loria over a new stadium,...

Netflix extended its lead as the world’s biggest premium video-streaming platform — pulling in a better-than-expected 13.1 million subscribers for the fourth quarter of 2023, a Q4 record. The company’s Q4 revenue came in slightly above Wall Street forecasts, while net income fell short.
As of the end of 2023, Netflix counted 260.28 million total members globally. On average, analysts expected the company to report about 8.8 million net new subs for the year-end quarter.
Netflix shares were up more than 8% in after-hours trading on the subscriber beat.
Revenue in Q4 grew 12% year over year, to $8.83 billion, higher than Netflix’s previous forecast due to favorable foreign exchange rates and “stronger than anticipated membership growth,” the company said. Net income was $938 million, or $2.11 per share. Wall Street expected earnings per share of $2.22 on revenue of $8.71 billion, according to financial data provider Lseg (formerly known as Refinitiv).

Viewership numbers of the inaugural season of Netflix's tennis docuseries Break Point have been released in addition to a comparability report with other sports documentaries.
The first season of Break Point revealed a behind-the-scenes look at the Atp and Wta stars competing in all four Grand Slam tournaments and was filmed during the 2022 season. It was subsequently released intermittently in 2023.
The first five episodes premiered on January 13th, 2023, and the second part, also with five episodes, came out towards the end of June 2023, at the same time when Netflix's viewership statistics had been compiled for analysis.
The series is targeted at telling the story of a sport in transition and has coincided with the end of the glorious reigns of legends like Serena Williams and Roger Federer and the emergence of young players like Carlos Alcaraz and Holger Rune - both of whom feature in Season 2.

Netflix is continuing to slowly build out its offerings of live sports.
There’s a very clear strategy unfolding at Netflix when it comes to live sports. Its Netflix Cup live golf tournament from November was the service's first attempt at offering any sports event, and was packed with big-name personalities from its docuseries “Formula 1: Drive to Survive and “Full Swing.” The company is returning to that strategy for its next live sports event, a tennis match between two of the biggest names in the sport.
Netflix will host a live tennis match between Carlos Alcaraz and Rafael Nadal on Sunday, March 3. Alcaraz is the second-ranked men’s tennis player in the world, while Nadal is a legend of the sport who may return for his last season in 2024. The tennis match leaves room for yet more questions about Netflix’s live sports intentions. Sign Up $6.99+ / month netflix.com...

The people who brew Michelob Ultra are counting on potential customers to crack open a documentary before they crack open a beer.
In Spring, the Anheuser-Busch InBev brand will launch “Lap of Legends,” a one-hour documentary special that spotlights the journey of Logan Sargeant, the popular American race-car driver. Sargeant will square off against avatars of popular Williams Racing racers from the past, and viewers will see him compete against rivals that use data and AI even as he drives in the physical realm. These “phantom racers” will be created using historical data of the drivers and their original cars.
The film will air via AMC, BBC America and Roku in April. Michelob Ultra is producing the content, and expects the film to be available in 28 countries.

Comedian Bert Kreischer got more than he bargained for as host of Netflix’s first-ever live sports event, the Netflix Cup, when a female protester ran onto the scene at the Wynn Golf Course in Las Vegas and he instinctively sprang into action, tackling her on camera.
In an exclusive interview with Deadline, Kreischer explains that the events of Tuesday afternoon transpired so quickly, he barely recalled what happened in the aftermath. “When we got done, someone at Netflix came up to me and they’re like, ‘Hey, you’re going viral’ and I was like, ‘For what?’ And they’re like, ‘The protestor,'” Kreischer says. “I literally, honestly didn’t even think about it. The company has resisted live sports streaming for years, but the NBA’s in-season tournament could be exactly what it needs to get its foot in the door.
Everything is aligning for the NBA to have a major presence in streaming in its next broadcasting agreement. Apple TV+, Max, Peacock and Prime Video are all potential streaming partners for the league, but what about Netflix, which at 247.15 million global users is the world’s largest streaming service by far?
Netflix may have interest in the NBA’s new in-season tournament. The streamer has discussed creating a new docuseries about the tournament to help promote it. If you’re a sports league or a superstar athlete, it used to be that you wanted all eyes to be on the field, court or track. Now, the real action occurs as much after the game’s over, with cameras still rolling. The runaway success of Netflix’s Formula 1 docuseries Drive to Survive and golf docuseries Full Swing has sparked a mini frenzy from leagues, teams and athletes, all of which are hoping that a hit docuseries of their own can drive new interest in their in-game performances, or at least provide an ancillary stream of revenue to an already lucrative sports business.
Netflix, for its part, is happy to crow about its success in the genre. “After Drive to Survive took off, fans started packing the stands at the races,” the streamer’s vp ad sales Peter Naylor told a crowd at Advertising Week New York on Oct.

John Malone-owned Liberty Media is revving up for Formula One’s landmark race on the Las Vegas strip set to unspool with fanfare next weekend.

Liberty leased Jim Dolan’s new Las Vegas Sphere, inside and out — so no U2 that weekend. A new report from the Wall Street Journal suggests that Netflix could be ready to expand its sports streaming portfolio beyond a golf tournament.
Walking before running is one thing, but Netflix seemingly wants to make sure it has crawling down before even attempting to stand on two legs in the live sports streaming game. The world’s largest streaming service recently announced details for itsplans to host a live golf tournament featuring celebrities from its shows “Formula 1: Drive to Survive” and “Full Swing,” but so far that is the only sports content the service has attempted to offer.
Netflix is reportedly mulling the addition of a live boxing match featuring YouTuber Jake Paul. The proposed boxing match would be Netflix’s second live sporting event ever. Netflix executives have resisted sports streaming in the past, but these events could signal a change in company thinking. Sign Up $6.99+ / month netflix.

Another major sports docuseries is in the works, and this one has some major star power behind it.
Lakers star LeBron James and his SpringHill Company is in talks with Peyton Manning’s Omaha Productions and Barack and Michelle Obama’s Higher Ground for a series that would follow professional basketball players, a source familiar with the discussions confirms to The Hollywood Reporter. The format would bring the same approach to the NBA that Omaha’s Quarterback brought to the NFL.
The NBA is also expected to be involved in the show, much as NFL Films is a partner on Quarterback. The Wall Street Journal, which first reported the news, says that the show will likely end on Netflix, where Higher Ground has a first-look deal, and where Quarterback emerged as a successful addition to the genre earlier this year.

Netflix won’t be live-streaming any Formula 1 races, pro tennis tournaments or PGA Tour events anytime soon. But the company does plan to continue leaning into the niche it has carved out with sports-related documentaries like Formula 1: Drive to Survive, Break Point and Full Swing.

Netflix‘s ad-supported tier is going look a bit different in the coming months. The streamer will offer two different types of sponsorships as well as what it’s currently calling a “binge” product designed to reward watching multiple episodes in a row, TheWrap can confirm.
These ad changes were announced during a keynote for the streamer during New York’s Advertising Week that was led by vice president of global advertising sales Peter Naylor.
The first major change has to do with sponsorships, which will be available to advertisers in two new forms. Title sponsorships will allow advertisers to promote their businesses by partnering with a new movie or season of a show. This ad offering is currently available in the U.S. and is set to expand globally in 2024. Frito Lay’s Smartfood became the first title sponsor in Netflix history thanks to its partnership with “Love Is Blind.

Live sports are at the center of the next wave of streaming evolution as live TV streaming services rely on them to attract and retain subscribers and subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) platforms — like Max, Paramount+, and Peacock — are beefing up their exclusive sports content to round out their offerings. While Netflix has thus far avoided wading too deeply into the exorbitantly priced bidding wars for live sports, the world’s largest streamer will officially enter the world of live sports streaming in its own unique Netflix way.

Like other streamers, Netflix seems eager to get into live sports. But it isn’t quite ready to start paying the massive rights fees that such activity usually requires.
So, the streaming giant intends to launch a “Netflix Cup,” a golf tournament that will pit race-car drivers from its popular Formula 1 documentary series “Drive to Survive” against golfers from a similar effort called “Full Swing.” Both sides will tee up in a match play tournament at Wynn Golf Club on the Las Vegas Strip. The event is slated to get underway on Tuesday, Nov. 14.

The competition is not just known for the ferocity between the nation and continent, but also between the spouses of the players on the two teams.
As the many players’ spouses make their way to Italy to cheer on the USA, Sims has appointed herself responsible for providing the content of the weekend.
Sims already made a name for herself at the PGA Championship. At the tournament, held by the Professional Golfers’ Association of America in May, Koepka won his fifth major title. Sims was not in attendance,...

Box to Box, the production company behind Netflix’s Formula 1: Drive To Survive, has cornered the sports docuseries market with its breakout docuseries and similar projects in the world of golf, tennis, cycling and rugby.
The company, founded by Amy and Senna producer James Gay-Rees and Paul Martin, who produced HBO’s Maradona, has also made a number of music documentaries including Apple’s 1971: The Year That Music Changed Everything.
But it has also been dabbling in new areas including corporate true-crime series with Apple’s Wanted: The Escape of Carlos Ghosn and is looking at other weird and wonderful stories for its documentary slate as well as a new push into scripted and a potential investment drive.
“We looked at sport as an area, particularly in the premium space, that felt underserved,” Martin told Deadline. “You had ESPN, which did 30 for 30 and HBO doing Hard Knocks once a year.

With an impressive subscriber total exceeding 238 million global customers, there’s no denying Netflix has the purchasing power to acquire a lot of assets. Most speculation surrounding mergers at the company centers on other acquiring external studios, but what about live sports?
Netflix’s co-ceo Ted Sarandos addressed that question during the company’s conference call to contextualize its second-quarter earnings report on Wednesday. He acknowledged that Netflix was adding more sports-related programming, but said that as far as live sports went, the company just isn’t quite there yet.

The world’s largest streaming service increased its massive global subscriber base this quarter, passing many of the industry’s expectations. Netflix released its second-quarter earnings report on Wednesday and the company grew to 238.39 million subscribers, up 5.89M from the 232.5 million global users it claimed at the end of Q1. The improvement marks an 8% year-over-year improvement, the largest such gain since the fourth quarter of 2021.
The gains include 1.17M new customers in the United States and Canada, two countries that are always grouped together in Netflix’s user measurements. The growth represents a 3.12% increase over the corresponding quarter in 2022, following four-straight quarters of subscriber declines. The Ucan subscriber total comes in at 75.57M, which represents the region’s new high, besting the 75.22M achieved in Q4 2021.
Similarly, the Asia-Pacific region grew by 1.07M subscribers, and Europe, the Middle East, and Africa added 2.43 users. Latin America grew by 1.22 customers. The Emea...

As sports docuseries go, Netflix's Quarterback by no means reinvents the wheel. While the eight-part series boasts unprecedented access to NFL stars at the peak of their careers — including Super Bowl Lvii champion and Mvp Patrick Mahomes — it relies on a familiar format as it charts their respective journeys throughout the 2022 season. Episodes combine extensive game footage with commentary from Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Mahomes, Minnesota Vikings Qb Kirk Cousins, and former Atlanta Falcon Marcus Mariota, who speak candidly about their successes, disappointments, and struggles. Swap in different sports and you get Netflix shows like Formula 1: Drive to Survive and Full Swing, or shift the timeline up to the preseason to replicate the league's long-running HBO series Hard Knocks.
