Though they never completely went away as a genre, survival thrillers are clearly having A Moment. You've got Yellowjackets on TV, Ja Bayona's Society Of The Snow headed our way early next year and :a[Idris Elba gearing up to co-direct a story of astronauts]{href='https://www.empireonline.com/movies/news/idris-elba-to-direct-astronaut-survival-thriller-above-the-below/' } trying to survive a bad crash landing. Ron Howard, though, has been ahead of the game for sometime, developing ideas for his own thriller, Eden for 15 years. He already has Jude Law, Ana De Armas and Daniel Brühl aboard the film, and is added Euphoria's Sydney Sweeney and :a[Mission: Impossible]{href='https://www.empireonline.com/movies/reviews/mission-impossible-dead-reckoning-part-one/' }'s Vanessa Kirby to the cast.
The film, per Deadline, is based on an unsolved mystery that unfolded on a remote island in the Galapagos. And it charts the lengths humans will go in pursuit of happiness.

Oscar-winning director Ron Howard (A Beautiful Mind) is planning to head into production on his latest film, a survival thriller formerly known as Origin of the Species and now going by the title Eden, at the end of November – and with just weeks to go before cameras start rolling, Howard has rounded out his lead cast with Vanessa Kirby (Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning) and Sydney Sweeney (Euphoria).
Kirby and Sweeney are taking over roles that were previously assigned to Alicia Vikander and Daisy Edgar-Jones. Their co-stars include Jude Law (Sherlock Holmes), Ana de Armas (Knives Out), and Daniel Bruhl (The Alienist). Howard had a solid cast put together before Vikander and Edgar-Jones dropped out, and the cast remains strong with Kirby and Sweeney as their replacements.

It really does feel as if it’s been a minute since Ron Howard has directed a beloved film. His most recent films, “Hillbilly Elegy” and “Thirteen Lives,” both had big awards season aspirations but seemed to fall short. Then there’s the whole “Solo: A Star Wars Story” debacle. All that to say, Howard, over the past few decades, has been one of the most consistently commercial directors we’ve had.

Millie Bobby Brown, a famous actress known for her function in “Stranger Things,” has turned out to be a proposal for feminism and social change.
Despite dealing with public scrutiny and criticism as a child big name, Brown’s awakening to feminism came after a visit to a psychic who recognized her as a feminist.

Previously, in episode 2 of “Welcome to Eden,” Nico conducted a search around Saul’s module and discovered a note from his mentor implying that Saul was the one who issued death threats to Astrid. Nico intended to turn him in to advance his position in Eden, but Saul didn’t let that happen. He stabbed Nico in the neck and fled, abandoning him to die. As Nico took his final breath, Zoa stayed by his side. Meanwhile, Charly and Africa were still in prison. Astrid was going to decide who to execute first, but Erick considered that Astrid would not be the one to decide anyone’s life or death in Eden, so a voting system among Eden’s top-ranking personnel would be implemented to make the appropriate decision.

Welcome to Eden is a Spanish series for Netflix created by Joaquín Gorriz and Guillermo López Sánchez starring Amaia Aberasturi, Amaia Salamanca and Belinda.
The second season of this series of beautiful people, framed in an idyllic landscape, takes us to this plot of crimes, ambitions and lots of unleashed hormones.
It may not have pleased the critics, but the formula has worked for them in terms of audience, so we won’t get too much into it, because the audience is the harshest critic and this industry, after all, is here to entertain the public.
Welcome to Eden gives what the public wants from it, and its success speaks for itself.

The French director on making the closest thing to an autobiography, stripping Léa Seydoux of her glamour and dating fellow film-makers
French screenwriter and director Mia Hansen-Løve, 42, was born in Paris to parents who were both philosophy professors. She studied German at university, then had stints as an actor and film critic before making her directorial debut in 2007 with All Is Forgiven. In the role of a lifetime, Léa Seydoux plays a widowed single mum caught between new romance and the failing mind of her father in the French director’s deeply personal Cannes prize winner
The French writer-director Mia Hansen-Løve became a festival fixture with films such as All Is Forgiven (2007), Father of My Children (2009) and more recently the Palme d’Or nominated Bergman Island (2021). My own favourite Hansen-Løve films include the pulsing Eden (2014) and the ruminative Things to Come (2016), the latter of which contains one of Isabelle Huppert’s finest screen performances. But in this, her latest Cannes prize winner, Hansen-Løve hits a career high note, delivering a quietly thoughtful and ultimately life-affirming portrait of the strange interaction between loss and rebirth. It’s a miraculous balancing act that pretty much took my breath away.

On some basic level, Mia Hansen-Løve makes movies because she has a “very, very bad” memory. “It’s a way to hold on to events that I want to remember, to really make sure the things that matter to me will still exist even if I forget them,” says the French filmmaker. She scrunches up the already rumpled tissue in her lap and releases it again. “I’m always worried that I will forget everything.” That fear goes a long way in explaining the many parallels that exist between Hansen-Løve’s real life and the lives explored on screen in her emotionally intense, often award-winning films.
Hansen-Løve was only 23 when she wrote her debut All Is Forgiven; 25 when she directed it. The film, nominated for Best First Feature at the 2008 César Awards (the French equivalent of the Oscars), was loosely inspired by her uncle and cousin. Goodbye First Love (2011) told...

Daft Punk’s Thomas Bangalter has traded in his helmet for a baton. Today, April 7th, the French musician released his first solo work since the group’s breakup, an orchestral album called Mythologies.
The project was initially commissioned in 2019 by choreographer Angelin Preljocaj for a ballet of the same name. The end result is a 90-minute composition that “reveals a love of Baroque music and hints to traces of American minimalism,” according to a press release. Take a listen below.
After 28 years together, Daft Punk formally called it quits in February 2021. In a recent interview, Bangalter shed light on the reason for their breakup, saying he became increasingly uncomfortable with the convergence of music and technology.
On May 12th, Daft Punk will release a 10th anniversary edition of their final album, Random Access Memories. In the meantime, revisit their 10 most memorable musical moments here.

It’s been an interesting year for cinema thus far, and that won’t be slowing down in April.
There’s Leonor Will Never Die (7 April) – a meta love letter to Filipino cinema, led by the marvellous Sheila Francisco – and also Lola (7 April), a Second World War time travel drama whose low budget shows that you can do impressive things with very little. Albert Serra’s Pacifiction (21 April) is an intoxicating descent into danger and, as with the Spanish filmmaker’s previous films, it may be divisive, but demands to be seen – even if just to form your own opinion.
Ben Affleck directs and stars in Air (7 April), which follows Nike’s revolutionary partnership with a young Michael Jordan. Affleck’s receiving some of the best reviews of his career for the film. Meanwhile, grisly horror Evil Dead Rise (21 April) has generated word-of-mouth hype since its premiere at South by Southwest.

Gaspar Noé’s Irréversible — the notoriously graphic, 12-scene rape-revenge tragedy from 2002 — still has the capacity, to say nothing of the will, to shock. The movie premiered at Cannes to jeers and walkouts, a long tail of outrage and a reputation that would grow to precede and overshadow the art. This was all clearly to the director’s point. The movie stars Albert Dupontel and a then-married Monica Bellucci and Vincent Cassel in a slippery trio of roles: a couple (Bellucci and Cassel) and the woman’s ex. It opens with...

Amidst all the hullabaloo about Showtime merging with Paramount+ and the continuing revival of older shows that nobody asked to be revived, you would be forgiven for missing that the Epix streaming platform formally rebranded as MGM+ on January 15, 2023. Cue the Gif of Korath the Pursuer (Djimon Honsou) in "Guardians of the Galaxy" saying, "Who?"
Epix, for those not familiar, launched in the late 2000s and housed shows such as the Forest Whitaker-led crime drama "Godfather of Harlem" and the Stephen King adaptation "Chapelwaite" prior to its rebranding being announced in the wake of Amazon's 8.5 billion acquisition of MGM's vast collection of films and TV shows. Epix was also the original home of the since-canceled DC comic book TV series "Pennyworth," which moved to HBO Max for its third season under the gloriously cumbersome new title, "Pennyworth: The Origin of Batman's Butler." Ivy Sole has no interest in being mysterious. Other musicians may savour secrecy in their work, but Sole – real name Taylor C McLendon – bares all. The Charlotte-born, Philadelphia-bred rapper writes lyrics that feast on the intimate details of their life, past and present. At any given time, McLendon wants you to know exactly what it was like; exactly how it felt. Even when that feeling was awful. “I want the listener to understand,” they say down the line from their home in Philadelphia. As if illustrating their fondness for clarity, McLendon speaks slowly and is prone to taking long pauses before an answer.

If you picture a “Lord of the Flies”-style summer camp from the “Great British Bake Off” producers, it might look something like their new reality show for U.K. broadcaster Channel 4, “Kids in the Wild.”

Cryogenically frozen prisoners wake up thousands of years in the future in the new graphic novel Eden. Written by Matthew Arnold and illustrated by Riccardo Burchielli, Eden premieres the first of its five chapters today on comiXology Originals before being released in print on July 12th from Dark Horse Books, and as a special treat for Daily Dead readers, we've been provided with preview pages and an essay from Arnold about the graphic novel's true crime inspiration.
Here is Arnold's essay on the true crime inspiration behind Eden:
True Crime Inspiration
A theme of Eden involves judgement and punishment, particular the often harsh or unfair judgement by the media and the public. At the heart of the book is a crime — the kidnap and murder of Senator Croft’s son, Jacob. The handling of this event in the story takes its inspiration primarily from the notorious Jon Benet Ramsay true crime case.

One of the joys of world cinema is that it opens your eyes to places and people that you might otherwise have never encountered. In an age where we can be connected to anyone at any time in any place, it’s surprisingly easy to still overlook films from smaller countries. Fortunately, through festivals like the All Asian Independent Film Festival, hidden gems such as “The Road to Eden” have less chance of flying under the radar. Directed by Bakyt Mukul and Dastan Zhapar Uulu, the film is a beautiful ode to Kyrgyzstan and to the country’s lost traditions.
