The mission of Our Living Worldis as ambitious as it is hard to pin down: to capture the living network that connects everything on Earth, including what we can’t see with the naked eye.
This miraculous, largely untold story hides behind every animal and ecosystem. From the Emmy Award-winning team that produced 2022’s Our Great National Parks, the four-episode docuseries reveals the secrets of the planet’s most powerful force — life itself. It’s also about how that planetary life support system –– spanning continents and oceans, fueled by wind, water, fire and the sun and moon –– is imperiled by the unprecedented speed of change to the Earth from human activity.
But hope, as Our Living World shows us, is hardly lost. This is a survival story, illuminating how our living network relies on all creatures great and small to beat the most treacherous odds and survive another day. Here...

Oscar winner Cate Blanchett is lending her voice to a Netflix nature docuseries highlighting species surviving amid the climate crisis.
Four-part Netflix series “Our Living World” hails from Freeborne Media and Wild Space productions, the Emmy-winning team behind “Our Great National Parks.” The series uses cinematic wildlife photography, macro close-ups, underwater tapestries, and digital effects to capture the tallest and oldest tree in the forest to the smallest egg in a salmon’s spawning pool and every organism in between. Cuttlefish, beavers, rhinos, crabs, dragonflies, flying foxes, and more are featured in nature action shots.
The official synopsis reads: “Spanning continents and oceans, fueled by wind and water and fire, this network allows the densest forests to impact the coldest glaciers, and the deepest oceans to feed the hottest deserts. But with Earth now changing at unprecedented speeds due to human activity, our living world’s network is malfunctioning – and it will take all creatures,...

Former President Barack Obama Wins Another Emmy, Beating Out Morgan Freeman For Outstanding Narrator
Morgan Freeman might have some fierce competition as former President Barack Obama beat him to the Emmy award for outstanding narrator.
The 44th U.S. president won the award for his voicework in Working: What We Do All Day. In addition to Freeman in Our Universe, Obama was up against Mahershala Ali in Chimp Empire, Angela Bassett in Good Night Oppy and Pedro Pascal in Patagonia: Life on the Edge of the World.
Working: What We Do All Day is a docu-series that follows the lives of 12 people working in the home care, tech and hospitality industries. It was inspired by Studs Terkel’s nonfiction book called Working: People Talk About What They Do All Day and How They Feel About What They Do.
Last year, Obama won an Emmy for Outstanding Narrator for his voiceover in Our Great National Parks. The last former president to win an Emmy was Dwight D. Eisenhower,...

Exclusive: The Republican contenders for his old job were debating up at the Reagan Library in Simi Valley last night, but today Barack Obama was in town seeking more higher ground.
The 44th President of the United States was on the westside of LA Thursday for a sit-down at CAA with the agents for his and former First Lady Michelle Obama’s Higher Ground production company.
According to a source close to the uber-agency, Obama met with his film, TV, and non-scripted team to discuss projects for Higher Ground. As casual as it can be when the ex-leader of the free world is in the house, the gathering was held in one of CAA’s large conference rooms.

Last year’s Best Narrator Emmy contest was a real clash of the titans as three-time champion David Attenborough (“The Mating Game”) attempted to fend off famously charismatic first-timer Barack Obama (“Our Great National Parks”). Now that the former U.S. president has one victory under his belt, he is immediately seeking a second for another Netflix series, “Working: What We Do All Day.” This time, he faces an entirely different slate of challengers who could very well make this outing even more difficult.
Those competing against Obama for the 2023 narration prize are returning nominees Angela Bassett (“Good Night Oppy”) and Morgan Freeman (“Our Universe”) and category newcomers Mahershala Ali (“Chimp Empire”) and Pedro Pascal (“Patagonia: Life on the Edge of the World”). Collectively, the professional actors have previously vied for 14 Emmys across 10 categories.

Former U.S. President Barack Obama scored his second Emmy nomination Wednesday, for the Netflix docuseries Working: What We Do All Day, which he starred in and was nominated for in the category of best narrator.
The show saw Barack and the series’ filmmakers interviewing workers in three different sectors — hospitality, home care and tech — to explore what a typical workday is like in each of those industries and the main challenges faced.
Working comes from the former president and first lady Michelle Obama’s production company Higher Ground, which struck a content deal with Netflix in 2018 to produce films and television series for the streaming giant.
The former first lady was also nominated for the first time, for outstanding hosted nonfiction series or special, The Light We Carry: Michelle Obama & Oprah Winfrey, sharing her nomination with Oprah Winfrey. In The Light We Carry, Michelle sat down with Winfrey for...

Presidents of the United States (both sitting and former) have won. So have former Beatles. And a First Lady. And a lot of other unlikely movie types. Even though Emmy Awards host Kenan Thompson roasted Netflix not once, but twice at the beginning of the telecast, the streaming service gets the last laugh. After two Creative Arts ceremonies last weekend and the Primetime Emmys tonight, Netflix has officially taken home 26 Emmy Awards in 2022.
Netflix entered the 74th annual awards with 105 total nominations, trailing only HBO and HBO Max with 140. Between all of the ceremonies, Netflix won 26 total awards, including three wins at the Primetime ceremony for “Squid Game” for Drama Actor (Lee Jung-jae) and Directing, and “Ozark” for Drama Supporting Actress (Julia Garner). Despite these banner victories and strong showings from “Squid Game” and “Stranger Things” overall, Netflix ends this cycle down almost 41 in wins over last year, when it took home 44 Emmys; it also trails HBO and HBO Max, which ended up with 38 total trophies.

On Wednesday, President Joe Biden hosted Barack and Michelle Obama in the White House to reveal their official White House portraits.
The former President’s portrait was painted by Robert McCurdy, and the former First Lady’s was painted by Sharon Sprung. This reunion of sorts occurred because Donald Trump neglected to hold an unveiling for his predecessors during his term, which is the usual tradition for American presidents.
The two portraits definitely seem like they were approached by separate artists and provide an appealing contrast. Barack’s portrait shows him standing up straight against a stark-white background looking casual yet confident and assured. The lighting and painting is also more granular and realistic.
Michelle’s portrait shows her reclined, and is much more colorful with her blue dress popping beautifully against the warm tones of her seat and the background.

HBO’s “Euphoria” and “The White Lotus,” as well as Netflix’s “Stranger Things,” lead the early Emmy tally heading toward TV’s big night: All three series landed five trophies during the Creative Arts Emmys, dispensed on two consecutive nights over Labor Day weekend, and are in the hunt for more high-profile prizes Sept. 12 when the 74th annual Primetime Emmy ceremony gets underway on NBC.

As Gold Derby predicted, Barack Obama was just awarded the Best Narrator prize at the 2022 Creative Arts Emmys for the Netflix documentary series “Our Great National Parks.” The former U.S. president was, understandably, not in attendance to accept his first TV Academy honor. He is now halfway to Egot status, having already nabbed two Grammys for Best Spoken Word Album.
Obama fended off quite a formidable challenger in three-time Best Narrator Emmy winner David Attenborough, who was recognized this year for “The Mating Game.” The other three contenders in the lineup were returning nominees Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (“Black Patriots: Heroes of the Civil War”) and Lupita Nyong’o (“Serengeti II”) and category first-timer W. Kamau Bell (“We Need to Talk About Cosby”).

Former President Barack Obama won his first Emmy on Saturday, for Netflix docuseries Our Great National Parks.
Presenter RuPaul accepted on his behalf, and to enthusiastic applause.
He was honored for outstanding narration, for the episode titled “A World of Wonder,” which explores Africa’s beaches, Japan’s islands and Australia’s Great Barrier Reef.
Obama is 2009’s Nobel Peace Prize recipient. He is also now halfway to Egot, as his Emmy also will join two Grammys that he won for spoken word albums The Audacity of Hope: Thoughts on Reclaiming the American Dream and Dreams from My Father.
Our Great National Parks is also nominated for its cinematography.

Barack Obama is officially halfway to an Egot, as the former president of the United States nabbed his first Emmy for outstanding narrator.
Obama lent his voice to the Netflix docuseries “Our Great National Parks,” narrating its five episodes that span from Patagonia, Chile, to Tsavo, Kenya. Netflix submitted the first episode, “A World of Wonder,” for Emmy consideration.
If Obama were to ever win a Tony award and the Academy Award, he would achieve full Egot status for winning an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony — a feat just 17 people have achieved so far.
In 2020, the documentary “American Factory,” which both Barack and Michelle Obama produced under their banner, Higher Ground won an Oscar, but neither personally took home the Oscar. The doc tells the story of what happens when a Chinese company opens an automotive glass plant at a former General Motors location in Ohio, facing intense community skepticism and cultural differences.

Emmy voters were moved by music, handing out five awards apiece to “The Beatles: Get Back” and “Adele: One Night Only” at Saturday’s portion of the two-night Creative Arts Emmys.
The music of “The Pepsi Super Bowl Halftime Show” was also a big winner, with three awards, including Music Direction for Adam Blackstone.
In the reality TV world, “Love on the Spectrum U.S.,” the Netflix series that follows people on the autism spectrum as they navigate the world of dating and relationships, snagged three Emmys, including ones for casting, picture editing and unstructured reality program. The first night of the 2022 Creative Arts Emmy Awards is taking place on Saturday, Sept. 3, and we’ll see where the Primetime ceremony could be heading based on the first wave of winners.
With an evening that features categories for animated program, reality host, documentaries and short form, we could get a strong sense of where some of the support lies for the main ceremony on Monday, Sept. 12.
There are significant history-making moments that can take place.
Barack Obama could become the second U.S. president to win an Emmy for outstanding narrator for Netflix’s “Our Great National Parks.” Dwight Eisenhower won in 1956, while still in office when he picked up the Governors Award “for his use and encouragement of television.”
If Obama wins, he’ll be halfway to Egot status after netting two Grammys for best spoken word album for “Dreams from My Father” (2006) and “The Audacity of...

The TV academy has honored the work of voice actors nearly every year since 1992 and has bestowed separate Emmys for Best Narrator and Best Voice-Over Performance annually since 2014. Included among those recognized in the former category this year are a three-time champion, a pair of returning nominees and two newcomers (one of whom is a Grammy-winning former U.S. president).

Night 1 of the Creative Arts Emmys will take place Saturday, September 3 at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles and will focus primarily on animation and unscripted fare. Gold Derby editors Denton Davidson, Daniel Montgomery and Marcus James Dixon recently got together to wage a war of words over their predictions for many of these races. Watch the editors’ Emmy predictions video slugfest above.
For Best Animated Program our staffers reach a consensus that Netflix newbie “Arcane” will pull off a win over more established favorites like “Rick and Morty,” “The Simpsons” and “Bob’s Burgers” as well as MCU’s “What If?” Daniel notes, “I think after ‘Primal’ won, that told me that the show that stands out here will likely win.” Denton agrees adding, “It also just won three juried awards. It cleaned house there and it’s the only one among the nominees that just took home three juried awards.

Labor Day weekend is coming up, which means just one thing: the Creative Arts Emmy Awards. Statuettes will be handed out on Saturday, Sept. 3 and Sunday, Sept. 4. Gold Derby editors and Experts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng are here to make their predictions for both nights, starting with Night 1. (Night 2 predictions coming on Aug. 30.)
Saturday is all about unscripted and nonfiction fare. This is when RuPaul will likely win Best Reality Host for the seventh year in a row for “RuPaul’s Drag Race” and “The Beatles: Get Back” is poised for a big night. But could it also be a big night for the Super Bowl halftime show? It would be the first halftime show to win the Best Variety Special (Live) category, which frontrunner “Live in Front of a Studio Audience: The Facts of Life and Diff’rent Strokes” has won twice for the franchise’s previous outings.

Only 19 out of 70 nominees in this year’s lead, supporting and guest actor and actress categories across dramas, comedies and limited series are people of color. But when it comes to unseen performers — including those in the narration category — there are actually more nominees of color than white ones.
“I’m reluctant to jump to conclusions,” Kareem Abdul-Jabbar says about the diversity discrepancy. For narrating “Black Patriots: Heroes of the Civil War,” the NBA legend-turned historian is one of four Black nominees — he’s joined by W. Kamau Bell to “We Need To Talk About Cosby,” Lupita Nyong’o for “Serengeti II” and Barack Obama for “Our Great National Parks.” This year, “The Mating Game” narrator David Attenborough, was the only white person to make the category.

The TV academy has honored voice-only performances since 1992, when six cast members from “The Simpsons” collectively became the first actors to receive Emmys for such work. The Best Voice-Over Performance category became an official non-juried one in 2009 and was then split into two categories in 2014: Best Character Voice-Over and Best Narrator. Jeremy Irons (“Game of Lions”) made history as the latter category’s first champion, having been awarded once before for “The Great War and the Shaping of the 20th Century: War Without End” in 1997.
The 2022 Best Narrator ballot list below consists of 33 performances. Seeking a fourth victory is David Attenborough (“The Mating Game”), whose three-year streak was broken last year by Sterling K. Netflix played matchmaker between James Honeyborne and the Obamas. The filmmaker’s Freeborne Media, which specializes in natural storytelling, and the Obama’s Higher Ground production company both have deals at the streaming giant, which introduced the two parties. What eventually came out of that was “Our Great National Parks,” a five-part Netflix documentary series hosted by former President Barack Obama.
“It quickly became apparent that we shared common interests, so it felt like a real natural fit to get together and talk about this,” Honeyborne tells Gold Derby at our Meet the Experts: Documentary panel (watch the exclusive video interview above). “The president is actually recognized as the president in all of U.S. history who’s saved more wilderness than anyone else, so he’s got a real authenticity to tell the story. There's no stopping Bridgerton's impressive reign at Netflix.
The streaming service announced Tuesday that the Regency era drama that focuses on a new love story every season has broke broken its own record.
Bridgerton Season 2, which launched in March, has soared even higher than Bridgerton Season 1.
It racked up 627.11 million hours viewed throughout the first 28 days on the streamer to become the most-watched English-language show.
Bridgerton Season 1 settles for second place with 625.49 million hours viewed during the same time period.
Netflix typically makes a decision on the future of a series after assessing its performance in that first month, with some making the cut for new seasons, and others being cut short.
Fans of Bridgerton will be well aware that Netflix quickly ordered a second season, followed by a third and fourth, as well as a Queen Charlotte spinoff.
Bridgerton Season 2 this week scooped up 66.61 million hours viewed, appearing in the top 10 in 88 countries.

Netflix has been dropping teasers for the much-anticipated fourth season of the Duffer brothers’ hit series for months now, but on Tuesday, the show finally released a full-length trailer while also confirming the penultimate season returns for its first half on May 27.

The race for this year’s Emmy for Best Narrator just got its highest-profile potential nominee. Former President Barack Obama could very well win this category for his voice-over work in Netflix’s five-part docuseries “Our Great National Parks,” which premiered on April 13.
Obama’s narration helps the series explore the ecosystems that exist in the national parks of the United States, as well as in reserves all over the world. The show also looks at the role that humans play in threatening those ecosystems while also showing our ability to create these monuments to preservation.

The series was produced by Higher Ground Productions, which was founded in 2018 by Barack and Michelle Obama. While the company, which has an exclusive deal with Netflix, has only been around for four years, it has already proved to be a major player in awards races.

As the threat grows more imminent, both families must decide how best to survive the potential crisis, all while grappling with their own place in this collapsing world.
Upon its publication in October 2020, Leave the World Behind was listed as one of Barack Obama’s Summer Favorites, also being named a Read with Jenna Today Show Pick; a finalist for the 2020 National Book Awards; and Best Book of the Year by The Washington Post, NPR, Time, Esquire and Elle, among other outlets.
