Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s turn in Bullet Train has led to theories he’s going to play Bond next. But do actors who play Bond-like characters go on to actually play 007? We take a look.
At the time of writing, at least, there’s much speculation about Aaron Taylor-Johnson and his connection to the James Bond franchise. In March, a British newspaper with a big red masthead spread the rumour that the actor is secretly being lined up to play 007, taking over from Daniel Craig.
It’s a rumour so persistent that Taylor-Johnson has started to get a bit cross when ‘The Bond Question’ is brought up in interviews. When asked by an Associated Press reporter about the whole matter, Taylor-Johnson looked down at his feet, as though trying to repress some terrifying wellspring of anger, before abruptly marching off with a chirpy, “Alright, have a good one!”

The Movie Brats of the New Hollywood took Hollywood by storm beginning in the late ‘60s, blasting through the studios and marking their territory in modern cinema. Scorsese, Bogdanovich, Ashby, Friedkin, De Palma, Schrader, on and on, made their names during this time. But you don’t get out of an era like that unscathed and even today, some feuds still simmer, like that between Brian De Palma and Paul Schrader, whose collaboration on 1976’s Obsession caused a rift that put an end to one of the could’ve-been perfect pairings of the New Hollywood.
In a recent Facebook post, Schrader was asked if he could ever reconcile with De Palma, to which Schrader replied, “Re: Bdp. Not my call.” This would indicate that Schrader is ready to patch things up with his former friend but maybe De Palma isn’t interested. Now, to be fair here, Schrader can be...

The films in the running for the 2024 Best Original Score Oscar are “American Fiction,” “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Oppenheimer,” and “Poor Things.” Our current odds indicate that “Oppenheimer” (3/1) will take the prize, followed in order of likelihood by “Killers of the Flower Moon” (4/1), “Poor Things” (9/2), “Indiana Jones” (9/2), and “American Fiction” (9/2).
Just two of the five musicians on this roster are returning contenders, with the first-timer subgroup consisting of Jerskin Fendrix (“Poor Things”), Laura Karpman (“American Fiction”), and Robbie Robertson (“Killers of the Flower Moon”). Robertson, who died last August at age 80, is this category’s eighth posthumous nominee and first since 1977, when Bernard Herrmann earned dual bids for “Obsession” and “Taxi Driver” nearly 14 months after his death. He would be the fourth deceased composer to win an Academy Award, following Victor Young and “Limelight” (1973) duo Raymond Rasch and Larry Russell.

The BBC have unveiled a new slate of star-studded dramas including the TV adaptation of James Graham’s football play “Dear England” starring Joseph Fiennes, a new co-pro with “Euphoria” producer A24 and the screenwriting debut from “Sex Education” star Aimee Lou Wood.
Director of BBC Drama Lindsay Salt revealed the 12-strong slate – which adds up to 66 hours of top TV – at a press event in London, U.K. on Wednesday evening. It includes two more series of Belfast-based police drama “Blue Lights.”
“Inflation, content and platform saturation, streamer retrenchment, the writers’ strike… It’s all fed a serious slowdown,” Salt said as she unveiled the diverse slate. “Five years ago, everyone was willing to make brave choices, to experiment, to try something a little unorthodox. Two songs from “Barbie” are Oscar-nominated, part of a diverse collection of songs and musical scores nominated for the 96th annual Academy Awards.
“What Was I Made For?” by Billie Eilish and Finneas O’Connell, and “I’m Just Ken,” by Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt, were chosen by the 390 voting members of the Academy music branch. Three “Barbie” songs were shortlisted (Dua Lipa’s “Dance the Night” being the third) but only two can be nominated, per Academy rules.
The “Barbie” songs are already considered frontrunners, and if either number prevails on March 10, the Oscar will go to a pair of songwriters who already have one of those golden statues. Siblings Eilish and O’Connell won for 2021’s James Bond film “No Time to Die,” while Ronson and Wyatt were two of four 2018 winners for Lady Gaga’s song “Shallow” from “A Star Is Born.”

Doctor Who is heading for a significant shakeup as Millie Gibson, who plays the Doctor’s newest companion, Ruby Sunday, prepares to exit the series after one season. The BBC introduced Gibson as Ruby Sunday in the latest Doctor Who Special “Doctor Who: The Church on Ruby Street,” alongside Ncuti Gatwa as the Doctor. Replacing Gibson in Season 15 of the long-running series is Varara Sethu.
Gibson will return as Ruby Sunday for season 14 of the series, which is set to drop in May on the BBC in the U.K. and Disney+ internationally. Season 15 is currently shooting in Wales, where Gatwa and Sethu will likely learn how much running is involved in the Doctor Who filming process. No reason has been given as to why Gibson is exiting the show.
Russell T Davies returns to the series for seasons 14 and 15 to showrun, write, and executive produce the new episodes, with co-production handled by Bad Wolf.

“Doctor Who” star Millie Gibson is being replaced after one season, Variety has confirmed.
“Jurassic World Dominion” actor Varada Sethu will star opposite Ncuti Gatwa as the Doctor’s companion in the 15th season of the show.
Gibson, who until now was best known for playing Kelly Neelan on British soap “Coronation Street,” made her debut on the long-running sci-fi show in December’s Christmas special. She played companion Ruby Sunday alongside Gatwa, who stars as the Fifteenth Doctor.
Gibson will return as Ruby in the upcoming 14th season, which is set to drop in May on the BBC in the U.K. and Disney+ internationally.
But for Season 15, which is currently shooting in Wales, Sethu will play Gatwa’s companion, a source confirmed. No other details have been revealed about her role. Sethu has previously appeared in “Andor” and “Mrs Sidhu Investigates.”
Gatwa, who also starred in “Barbie,” will stay on as the Doctor.

Fool Me Once kicks 2024 off with a bang as it hits the charts around the globe, but as you may have figured out by now, the show won’t be returning for a second season.
In case you missed it, Fool Me Once is a new British drama series that features the talents of Michelle Keegan, Adeel Akhtar, and Richard Armitage. It’s about an ex-soldier who finds out that her husband, who is supposed to be dead, is very much alive as she spots him on a nanny cam.
As with all prior Harlan Coben shows on Netflix and a growing number of Netflix scripted dramas – Fool Me Once was designed and will remain a limited series. That means by the time the credits roll on episode eight, you’re all done. That shouldn’t come as a huge surprise given that the series...

While his films have ranged from the sublime to the atrocious, there’s no denying the impact Brian De Palma has had on cinema. Let’s take a look back at 20 of his greatest films, ranked worst to best.
De Palma began his filmmaking career directing underground features shot on a shoestring, many of which starred a young Robert De Niro. He came into his own with the Hitchcock-inspired thriller “Sisters” (1973), starring Margot Kidder as a pair of killer Siamese twins. The Master of Suspense would serve as a muse to De Palma throughout his career, influencing such films as “Obsession” (1976), “Dressed to Kill” (1980), “Blow Out” (1980) and “Body Double” (1984) both in style and substance.
He enjoyed his first box office success with “Carrie” (1976), an adaptation of Stephen King’s chilling novel about a shy teenager (Sissy Spacek) with telekinesis. The film brought Oscar nominations to Spacek and Piper Laurie...

Two years ago, Addison Rae toyed around with the idea of pop stardom. Her debut single, the glossy “Obsessed,” offered a small taste of where the influencer could take a full-fledged music career, but it was the only record she released in an official capacity. There were rumors of a potential full-length album, and plenty of leaked songs from it. Rae has referred to the project in the past as “the lost album,” and now she’s found it — or at least some of it.

Times Square has little to no redeeming qualities. New York’s tourist hotspot is congested and chaotic — but it’s also an advertising magnet of bright lights and giant visual displays. When Spotify plasters LED billboards across the area promoting new music releases, fans and artists alike flock to the area to catch a glimpse and snap pictures to share on social media. Sky Ferreira fans would love to partake in this kind of fandom activity, but her album releases have been seemingly deadlocked with Capitol Records since her debut record arrived a decade ago.

This is a find. Writer-director Laurence Vannicelli’s follow-up to his little-seen debut Vera represents a classy, spare shard of quasi-horror so elevated it’s barely horror at all despite the deployment of a few supernatural bangs and whizzes. It’s more in the tradition of psychological thrillers from the old days that critics still pine for, such as Don’t Look Now (1973) or Obsession (1976), all teasing ambiguity and deep dives into the messier corners of lovers’ psyches. This Star Trek: Strange New Worlds article contains spoilers.
When Strange New Worlds premiered last year, nobody expected the show to become a series of strange new genres. And yet, the most retro Star Trek series of the modern era has proved to be the most flexible. In a race to see which Star Trek show would have become a musical first, nobody could have guessed Snw would have beat Lower Decks to that particular punch. But here we are. The first official musical in the history of Star Trek has arrived, and like a lot of Snw season 2, “Subspace Rhapsody” contains multitudes.
Here’s every big easter egg from the Strange New Worlds musical and how some of the deeper cuts actually will change the way you think about Star Trek history…

At this point, there should be no argument against the idea that representation is important in television, but Samba TV is highlighting how more diverse casts can benefit studios in its latest State of Diversity report.
One of the report’s key takeaways after examining viewing patterns for households of different ethnicities is that audiences are much more likely to engage with content where they see themselves represented. More specifically, the study found a positive correlation of 43% among households of diverse ethnicities watching programs with higher percentages of non-white stars.
Samba reports that Black households saw the strongest correlation, with 67% watching programs with a higher percentage of Black leads.
For Asian and Hispanic households, this correlation was lower, which Samba conjectures may be impacted by a more “sporadic” representation for these groups on screen.
Overall, this correlation was higher on streaming, where the positive correlation between diverse households watching shows...

Despite making up 18% of the U.S., Hispanic actors are underrepresented on TV, according to a new analysis released by Samba TV.
The analysis, which is based on the top 25 highest-reaching direct-to-streaming and top 25 highest-reaching linear TV premiere episodes that were released between January 1 and May 1, found that 42% of top-billed actors were Hispanic, Black, Asian, or another ethnicity such as mixed, while 58% were white. At the show level, 48 out of the top 50 programs featured a white lead, over two-thirds included a Black lead, and 56% featured mixed leads. However, less than half included Hispanic or Asian leads.

Whenever Bachata king Romeo Santos steps foot in a NYC stadium, the turnout is no joke. He has sold out shows at both Yankee Stadium and Met Life Stadium, and his performance on Friday, June 9, at Citi Field was no different. The sold-out, three-hour performance, which is part of the Grammy-nominated singer's "Fórmula, Vol. 3" tour, was accompanied by a packed crowd of 40,000 fans. Based on the countless Latin American flags that waved that night, it's fair to assume that a large majority of the audience were Latines. Dominican DJ Mad opened the show, playing everything from merengue to reggaeton and even Central American cumbia; in other words, he made sure to please the diverse Latine communities that showed up. Santos, who is a native New Yorker himself, remains significant for Latines from New York, particularly those who grew up listening to him back in his Aventura days. There was a...

On Friday night, 40,000 fans poured into Citi Field, eager to hear Romeo Santos’ silky falsetto. The sold-out stadium was calm as fans grabbed drinks and made their way to their seats until DJ Mad lit the stage up at about 9 p.m. He opened the night with a medley of classic reggaeton and merengue hits — and even pleasantly surprised the crowd with some Central American cumbia, no doubt inspired by the travels that he’s carefully documented on Instagram while touring with Santos. As DJ Mad finished his set, he...

Shamir has readied a new album called Homo Anxietatem, his ninth album to date. The new project arrives August 18th via the legendary Kill Rock Stars, and today, the artist has shared lead single “Oversized Sweater.”
Produced by Hoost, the Rina Sawayama boardsman otherwise known as Justin Tailor, Homo Anxietatem sees the genre-shifting Shamir dip into alternative pop. As a tip off to its subject matter, the record’s title translates to “anxious man” in Latin. Those themes leak into the Y2K-influenced album opener “Oversized Sweater,” which Shamir described in a statement.
“The first quarter of 2020 before lockdown I felt a lot of anxiety,” the artist explained. “I was fresh out the psych ward and had quit smoking weed and cigarettes cold turkey. I spent the first couple months of 2020 knitting this huge baby blue sweater. It’s basically a wearable security blanket that I used to channel all my anxiety into.

Sexual obsession is well-worn territory for Erotic Thrillers, a subgenre that often features men who think with their libido rather than their brain. When you spend your life thinking about screwing, it tends to screw with your life.
This is the central premise of Josephine Hart’s 1991 novel Damage, which was transformed in the 1992 film of the same name, and, most recently, was adapted into the four part Netflix series Obsession.
In both adaptations, a wealthy, powerful, middle-aged married man becomes sexually obsessed with his son’s new girlfriend. They begin an affair, and the sexual desire costs the man everything: his job, his marriage, and the life of his son, who dies tragically when he falls over a banister after witnessing his father fucking his fiancé.
What’s interesting about both Damage and Obsession is how both texts adopt the tropes of an Erotic Thriller, albeit by substituting criminal or murderous activity for melodrama.

It’s official: Indira Varma has entered the Whoniverse – or rather, re-entered. Varma is the latest cast member announced for Doctor Who series 14, playing the mysterious ‘Duchess’ – quite the villain by the sounds of it, as Russell T Davies promises “a whole new audience will be hiding behind the settee when the Duchess unleashes her terror.”
But while these days Varma is best-known for her roles in Game of Thrones, Obi Wan and Obsession, not only has she already worked with Davies on Torchwood, she’s starred alongside a whole host of Doctor Who’s most notable alumni:

Netflix’s Beef displaced The Night Agent as the top overall streaming title for the week of April 10-16.
Beef, starring Ali Wong and Steven Yeun, drew 1.59 billion minutes of viewing time for the week, up 65 percent from its premiere week. The series also sparked controversy when past remarks about sexual assault by co-star David Choe resurfaced. Choe later said he made up the story, and Wong and Yeun said in an April 21 statement that they “do not condone this story in any way” while adding they have seen Choe seek support “to better himself and learn from his mistakes.”
The Night Agent (1.17 billion minutes) slipped to second but recorded its fourth straight week over the billion-minute mark. Love Is Blind (1.09 billion) and Disney+’s The Mandalorian (1.03 billion) also topped a billion minutes.
Netflix’s Florida Man was the highest charting premiere for the week with 649 million minutes of watch time.

Shooting has kicked off in Rome on limited series “The Leopard” based on the classic Sicily-set novel by Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa that marks Netflix’s most ambitious Italian original to date.
Production on the lavish period piece will take place in the Sicilian cities of Palermo, Syracuse, Catania as well as the Italian capital over the next four months.
The historical tapestry with elements comparable to “Downton Abbey” or “The Crown,” and potential to make a global mark, is a modern take on the sensual Sicilian saga famously adapted into a film by Luchino Visconti starring Claudia Cardinale, Alain Delon and Burt Lancaster. The film, now an Italian cinema classic, won the 1963 Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival.

Netflix Top 10: ‘Beef’ Climbs to No. 2 on English-Language TV List With Over 70 Million Hours Viewed
During the April 10-16 viewing window, Netflix’s latest dark dramedy “Beef” climbed in the rankings to land the No. 2 spot with 70.38 million hours viewed — that’s more than double the prior week’s figure. The show also reached the Top 10 in 87 countries.
Starring Ali Wong and Stephen Yeun, the series follows Danny (Yeun), a contractor with a chip on his shoulder, and Amy (Wong), an unfulfilled entrepreneur — two people whose lives become inseparable after a seemingly random road rage incident. Young Mazino, Joseph Lee, Maria Bello and Ashley Park also star.
The jump comes at a time of controversy for the series as one of its stars, David Choe, has come under fire online for his appeared attempt to scrub the internet of resurfaced footage from 2014 where he details his own “rapey behavior” toward a massage therapist.

The Night Agent is still sneaking its way up Netflix‘s list of Most Popular TV.
The series racked up another 90.04M hours viewed for the week of April 10 to April 16, reigning over the week’s English-language series and soaring to No. 6 on the all-time list. With 605M hours viewed since release, The Night Agent took the place of Stranger Things 3, bumping it down the list along with Lucifer Season 5 and Season 1 of The Witcher.
There is still a few days left before the series’ 28-day measurement window ends, meaning it could easily climb into the Top 5. The No. 5 spot is currently held by Season 1 of Bridgerton with 625M hours viewed.
Second place on this week’s Top 10 went to another thriller: Beef. Word of mouth has certainly helped the series starring Steven Yeun and Ali Wong more than double its audience from the previous week with 70.38M hours viewed.

George Rr Martin has revealed fresh details about his newly announced Game of Thrones prequel series.
The American author, who is behind the fantasy book series A Song of Ice and Fire, which was turned into the hit HBO series about feuding noble families, wrote in a blog post that the new adaptation will be based on his novella The Hedge Knight.
The book is about the adventures of Ser Duncan the Tall and his squire, Egg, in a period where the Iron Throne is still under Targaryen rule before the events of the original series.
Egg, brother of Aemon Targaryen who became a Maester to the Night’s Watch at Castle Black and appeared in Game of Thrones, would later grow up to become Aegon V.
He is also the grandfather of Aerys II, often referred to as the “Mad King”, who was the ruler of Westeros before King Robert Baratheon.
