Alfred Hitchcock puts Jane Wyman in harm’s way, as she tries to rescue her unworthy boyfriend Richard Todd from a murder charge. Is Jane proving her love, or are both of them being manipulated by a scheming actress, Marlene Dietrich? This is the movie in which Hitch inflicts a ‘frump complex’ on Ms. Wyman — she looks demoralized whenever she shares the screen with Dietrich. It’s also the movie that ponders the cinematic concept of ‘The Lying Flashback,’ which made perfect sense to Hitchcock but frustrated his audience. Also starring Michael Wilding, Alastair Sim and a cherry-picked list of English acting royalty.

In theaters today courtesy of Stx Entertainment is The Bye Bye Man, which was directed by Stacy Title and stars Douglas Smith, Doug Jones, Carrie-Anne Moss, Faye Dunaway, and Leigh Whannell. Daily Dead had a chance to catch up briefly with Title this week, and she discussed what she initially saw in the project, her approach to collaborating with her husband and writer for The Bye Bye Man, Jonathan Penner, and her unique cast of familiar faces and newcomers.
I’d love to start off by hearing what it was in the story of The Bye Bye Man that drew you in. The concept of this figure basically being the physical embodiment of evil is an interesting one to explore.

[Originally appeared in the December 2014 issue of Deadly Magazine.] ’Tis the season to be nicer, more forgiving and charitable toward those less fortunate. Keeping these ideals in mind, this month is the perfect opportunity to celebrate my favorite terrible (but so terrible that I can’t help but love it) holiday film of all-time: Santa’s Slay.
Directed by David Steiman (who has yet to helm another film since—poor guy), Santa’s Slay stars Bill Goldberg as a murderous Kris Kringle. He returns to the sleepy town of Hell Township with revenge on his mind, after being forced to be nice to children for a thousand years when he lost a bet with an angel a millennium ago. There’s a bit of Santa-related mythology thrown in, but what makes Santa’s Slay worthwhile is all the over-the-top raucous action and pitch-black humor.

Spoofaway Camp: Strauss-Schulson’s Playful Mash-up Takes a Tumble On You
Director Todd Strauss-Schulson, whose last feature was A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas (2011) returns with The Final Girls, an entertaining surprise of sorts as a playful riff on early 80s slasher tropes as it borrows the cosmic charms at play in classic titles like Woody Allen’s The Purple Rose of Cairo (1984) and The Wizard of Oz (1939).
With a talented young cast and plenty of boisterous energy, Strauss-Schulson manages to instill a thread of sentimentality in this generally comedic feature, and ironically makes us care more for its characters than the films it pays homage to actually manage. Those looking for genre thrills will most likely be disappointed, and its eventual outcome is a bit too hoary despite its enjoyable cuteness from screenwriters M.A. Fortin and Joshua John Miller (the team who wrote Rose McGowan’s 2014 short film Dawn,...

Remember learning your ABCs? “A is for apple” and so on? Well, fright film fans have been able to revisit the American alphabet and look at it in twisted new ways thanks to The ABCs of Death, a massive horror anthology movie comprised of 26 short films about dying, each one standing for a different letter in the alphabet. ★★★★☆ There's an eerily effective collision of genres happening in Stage Fright (2014). Horror, comedy and musical are all at play and, under the masterful hand of writer and director Jerome Sable, make for deliciously gory fun. While it hearkens back to the canon of 1980s "summer camp slasher" films , there's a refreshing tongue-in-cheek comedic tone here. Viewers can get the all-knowing wink as well as some guts on the side. Camilla Swanson (Allie MacDonald) is having a rough time: ten years ago, her mother, Broadway diva Kylie Swanson (Minnie Driver), was murdered. This unexpected death leaves Camilla and her brother Buddy (Douglas Smith) in the care of their mother's manager, Roger McCall (Meat Loaf).

Only Lovers Left Alive (voted by Rick)
Only Lovers Left Alive, the latest film from cult indie director Jim Jarmusch, stars Tom Hiddleston and Tilda Swinton as Adam and Eve, two century old vampires. Adam is an underground musician with a dedicated cult following. In his past time, he drives through the city in his classic Jaguar, collects music memorabilia, photographs, books, vintage musical instruments and old vinyls. He lives in an isolated home in the ruins of Detroit Michigan where he reunites with his enigmatic lover Eve. There, he enlists the help of one of his most dedicated fans (Anton Yelchin) to help collect the analog equipment he needs, and his doctor (Jeffrey Wright) to provide him with a steady supply of his favourite drink, type O-negative. Immortality is weighing on him and thoughts of suicide slowly take over. Not much happens, and not much needs to.

Popular in the 1960s and early 1970s with more rare appearances in the 1980s, 1990s and the 2000s, the anthology-style horror film has made a solid resurgence in recent years with such portmanteau releases as The ABCs of Death films and the V/H/S series.
With Mexico Barbaro, Fear Paris and other projects in various stages of completion, the anthology horror film looks to continue to be an important part of the horror cinema landscape.
Some anthology films employ a framing or wraparound sequence in an attempt to connect the segments that make up the film while others dispense with this classic Amicus-style approach entirely and simply present a collection of short films connected by genre.
Either way, a horror anthology film is ultimately about the quality of its individual segments and this article will take you on a tour of the greatest horror anthology segments of all time.

Summer holidays, barbecues on the beach and weekends decimated by relentless weddings: this is August for some. For other, more discerning types, it is about Frightfest, otherwise known as the chance to spend those rare sunny days ensconced in a darkened room for a horror movie marathon. This year’s Leicester Square event featured the usual mix of gonzo gore, copycat-killings and premiere screenings of future favourites; we managed to catch a few highlights.
The latest film from writer and director Riley Stearns (Mary Elizabeth Winstead’s husband, fact fans), Faults, received a European premiere last month. Massively enjoyable from start to finish, Stearns’ black comedy mostly eschews the genre necessity of scattergun bloody slayings in favour of an intelligent script focusing on the gaping voids left in desperate characters’ lives.

Glee and Friday The 13th collide in Jerome Sable's tongue-in-cheek slasher musical, which strains for Rocky Horror greatness, but ends up horrifying for all the wrong reasons. Overseen by Meat Loaf's fame-hungry Roger McCall, the campers are preparing to put on a new production of The Haunting Of The Opera (nod, wink), which just so...

Horror musicals don't come around all that often, but we were treated to one this year by the name of Stage Fright, featuring the likes of Meat Loaf and Minnie Driver. The film's soundtrack is on its way, and we have all the details right here.
Lakeshore Records will release the Stage Fright – Original Motion Picture Soundtrack digitally on August 19th and on CD September 23rd. Stage Fright features performances by Meat Loaf, Minnie Driver, Allie MacDonald, the Metal Killer, and more.
The film’s writer/director Jerome Sable and Eli Batalion composed the music and lyrics for this "Glee" meets The Rocky Horror Picture Show musical comedy, producing a genre-bending score that mixes heavy metal rock with a full orchestral sound. If you're like us, you can't wait for the first day of every month, because you know that Netflix is going to add a ton of new movies and TV shows. You refresh your account over and over again at midnight, hoping that those titles listed in the "Recently Added" section update with something new and exciting rather than the same ol' titles you've been staring at for the last four weeks.
Well, lo and behold, we've gathered the most exciting movies and TV shows being added to America's most popular streaming service, straight from Netflix themselves.
"Rocky" fans will be pumped to know that the first five boxing flicks (sorry, "Rocky Balboa" fans) will be added August 1, joining other '70s, '80s, and '90s movie favorites "Face/Off" (slow-motion doves!), "Mad Max" (apocalyptic leather!), "Spice World" (spice up your life!), "The Birdcage" (Calista Flockhart was in this,...

Johnson (Dino Dan) and Sinking Ship Entertainment, and aimed at children aged four through seven, Annedroids is a live-action adventure series about “Anne,” a young female scientist, her human friends and their android assistants, and the amazing scientific discoveries they make while undertaking the biggest experiment of them all: growing up. The series spotlights, through trial and error, how science, technology, engineering, the arts and math (Steam) can inspire children to do great things.
Annedroids stars Addison Holley (Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood) as “Anne,” Adrianna Di Liello (Stage Fright) as her friend “Shania,” and Jadiel Dowlin as “Nick.” The series also features vocal talent from Millie Davis (Orphan Black) as “Pal.”

When will you kids learn? As demonstrated in the first trailer for the upcoming Ouija, If you don't want demons in your house, then don't summon them with an Ouija board and then wonder where they came from. Stiles White, writer of supernatural flick The Possession and a credited co-writer on the truly kooky Knowing, makes his directorial debut. Olivia Cooke, a winning presence on TV's Bates Motel but stuck in a thankless role on this year's The Quiet Ones, stars with Douglas Smith (Stage Fright). Michael Bay's production company Platinum Dunes is involved, and so is Jason Blum, a specialist in low-budget horror, whose Paranormal Activity featured a Ouija board. The trailers features a number of familiar beats -- snippets of horror moments we've all seen...

John Carpenter was once among Hollywood’s most prolific filmmakers. But the man who brought us such genre classics as Halloween, The Thing, Escape From New York, and Assault on Precinct 13 has only made one movie in the past 13 years—2010’s psychological thriller The Ward—and hasn’t troubled the box office in a big way since 1998’s James Woods-starring Vampires. (And Carpenter, 66, doesn’t sound like he’s in any rush to get back behind the camera: “I worked really hard for more years than I’d like to count, but now I can pick and choose things,...

After graduating from the HBO series Big Love with roles in Ya adaptation Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters and horror comedy Stage Fright, Douglas Smith is continuing to rise in Hollywood with news that he’s landed a supporting role in Paramount’s hotly anticipated franchise reboot Terminator: Genesis.
No information yet on who Smith is playing, but the film is currently rolling cameras in New Orleans, so I can’t imagine it’s an especially important part. Regardless, Smith is a talented young actor, and it’s exciting to see his star rise with a role in a tentpole as surely lucrative as Terminator: Genesis.
The movie, directed by Game of Thrones and Thor: The Dark World helmer Alan Taylor, is currently shooting. The script was written by Laeta Kalogridis (Shutter Island) and Patrick Lussier (Drive Angry) with an eye to igniting a new trilogy of Terminator movies for Paramount,...

Winning my award for “Most Badass 2014 SXSW Midnighters Feature” was a horror musical that took me by complete surprise, blending operatic theatrics and bitchin’ 80s hair metal for a gloriously gory chorus of terror. Stage Fright, created by Jerome Sable and Co-Composer Eli Batalion, is an exquisite throwback to a greater era of horror, but the boys who brought you The Legend Of Beaver Dam also inject a humorous bite worthy of both laughs and screams. I mean, who doesn’t love a sing-along boasting a body count? Wait – don’t answer that. Just let me keep thinking I’m normal.
Drawing comparisons such as “Glee meets Sleepaway Camp” and “The Phantom Of The Opera meets Scream,” I like to think Stage Fright finds a unique, witty blend that goes beyond Glee‘s overly-dramatic sarcasm. Coming out guns blazing, Sable and Batalion hit fans right away with a self-deprecating song...

With just over a week until PiFan, the biggest celebration of genre cinema anywhere in Asia, Team Twitch is barely able to contain our excitement. So instead of sweating and fidgeting uncomfortably, we're putting our anticipation to practical use and previewing some of our hot tips and most anticipated titles for the fest. Today it is my turn to dissect the ungainly World Fantastic Cinema programme - an orgy of 44 titles from all corners of the globe that makes up the backbone of the PiFan showcase. There are definitely a few I can recommend right off the bat, namely Jermaine Clement and Taika Waititi's uproarious vampire comedy What We Do In The Shadows (which Ryland reviewed here), Jerome Sable's eccentric, ambitious slasher musical Stage Fright...

This week’s Blu-ray and DVD releases are an eclectic bunch, to say the least. Not only is Steve Miner’s criminally overlooked horror/comedy creature feature Lake Placid swimming its way onto Blu-ray, but Severin Films is also releasing a trio of controversial cult classics- Bloody Moon, The Baby and Bloody Birthday-all in high definition for the first time ever.
The Time Machine is also getting a Blu-ray release this week, along with Gareth Evans’ stunning action masterpiece The Raid 2 and a handful of indie horror films, including the wickedly entertaining horror musical Stage Fright starring Minnie Driver and Meat Loaf. Overall, it’s a good week to be a genre fan with oddball tastes because there’s a whole lot of wonderfully weird stuff arriving this Tuesday.
Spotlight Titles:
The Baby (Severin Films, Blu-ray)

"Jodorowsky's Dune"
What's It About? Cult filmmaker Alejandro Jodorowsky's vision for a "Dune" movie was beyond remarkable; it was truly epic. Pink Floyd, H. R. Giger, and Mick Jagger were just a few of the names attached to the film - until it imploded. This is a documentary about a sci-fi film that was ahead of its time and the visionary behind it.
Why We're In: Tons of interviews, behind-the-scenes details, storyboards, and more make this a must-see for art house, midnight movie, and film history fiends.
Moviefone's Top Blu-ray of the Week
"Point Blank"
What's It About? Lee Marvin and Angie Dickinson star in this cool crime drama about a thief who's out for revenge on the dude who double-crossed him. Mel Gibson's "Payback" was based on the same novel, "The Hunter" by Donald E. Westlake, but that shouldn't deter you.

2014, Canada
The horror genre has not exactly been a steady and stable movie-going experience for freshness or originality as of late. Nevertheless, the persistence to include any distinctive gimmick or angle just to distinguish these faceless frightfests from one another is indeed appreciated. In writer-director Jerome Sable’s Canadian creeper Stage Fright one can actually both cheerfully sing and scream for their supper in this entertaining off-kilter morbid musical of mayhem. Sable’s impishly dire slasher stage production does conjure up an interesting take on how to “kill a live audience”…or at least try not to be killed in front of this very same audience. Editor's Note: This post is presented in partnership with Time Warner Cable Movies On Demand in support of May's Indie Film Month. "Stage Fright" is currently available to view On Demand. The first rousing musical number in the new musical-horror mess "Stage Fright" is clever and catchy, and it promises better things than the film ever delivers; wasting no time in unsheathing a razor-sharp sense of humor, writer-director Jerome Stable and musical director Eli Batalion give us a coterie of nerdy theater geeks, like so many "Glee" rejects gathered for a giant slumber party, singing away their troubles to each other: "I got beaten up a dozen times / for singing Stephen Sondheim's Rhymes" "Those school bullies sound awfully bad" "What school bullies? It was…my…dad…" They come to the camp where they can learn how to sing and be themselves (at least for once a year), and where "everyone is gay,...

In the fall of 2010, everyone at Fantastic Fest was talking about The Legend of Beaver Dam, a short film that looked like a spooky horror flick until it burst into a musical. The short captured the disparate moods required for both types of movies to succeed, and did so in spectacular fashion. It seems like everyone wanted more of that type of delightfully bent genre-mashing. Now we have more from writer/director Jerome Sable, in the form of Stage Fright, a full-bore, feature-length horror/comedy/musical, set at a performing arts camp for kids, where everyone is free to be a theater geek without fear of standing out from the crowd. Chef
R, 1 Hr., 55 Mins.
Jon Favreau spent most of the past decade directing the cinematic equivalent of two cheeseburgers (with extra cheese) in the form of the first two Iron Man blockbusters and one expensively overcooked turkey in the shape of Cowboys & Aliens. Now the former indie-scene hotshot (remember Swingers?) is attempting to prove he’s still capable of whipping up a character-driven comedy via the more modestly budgeted Chef.

Nothing else in Stage Fright, a horror-musical hybrid that plays like a sleepy, off-brand Troma movie, is as good as Meat Loaf.
A walrus-mustachioed Loaf plays Roger McCall, the skeevy owner of Center Stage, a summer camp for young musical theater performers. To generate the ticket sales that will pay his mounting bills, Roger pressures teenage singer Camilla Swanson (Allie MacDonald) to play the female lead in Haunting of the Opera, a role Camilla's mother originated and was murdered while performing.
Roger's only a supporting character, but Meat Loaf's total commitment to lyrics as goofy as "And when the terrorists get suicidal/We'll be just fine because we have our own Bible" is far and away the highlight of a musical that's torn between snarky humor a...
