Want to enhance your horror movie? Make sure you sign up a cat...
This feature contains broad spoilers for several horror movies featuring cats, including Alien, Cat People, Drag Me To Hell, Fallen, A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night, Pet Sematary and The Voices.
The relationship between humans and cats over time has given way to a number of cultural impressions and outright superstitions. Ancient Egyptians associated them with gods. In the Middle Ages, they were linked with witches and killed en masse, which probably hastened the spread of the Black Plague through the rodent population. And in the modern day, it's interchangeably lucky or not if a black cat crosses your path.
Like anything with such a wide array of symbolic links, movies have presented cats as characters in different ways over the years. It's their abiding association with the supernatural – whether as an omen...

Chip and Joanna Gaines may be Hgtv’s power couple now, but the mom of four had a pretty amazing example set for her growing up. A few years ago, as I stood in line at a Hero Complex Gallery show celebrating the legendary Joe Dante and Roger Corman, I overheard someone behind me discussing a documentary project they were working on about the art of movie posters. Fast forward to September 2016 and that documentary, 24x36: A Movie About Movie Posters, was enjoying its world premiere during the 2016 Fantastic Fest, and I was incredibly interested in seeing it due to my own personal love for movie art, as well as the fact that this project has been on my radar for quite some time.

It was late November, 2016 when I visited the set of The Conjuring 2 (directed by James Wan). The reason I never wrote about it for Clothes on Film or anywhere else was because of my official role on the day: I was playing an extra (or background artist if you like) during the film’s Maida Vale pub scene. Specifically this is the moment when real life husband and wife paranormal investigator team, Lorraine (Vera Farmiga) and Ed Warren (Patrick Wilson) meet with noted experts in their field to discuss the validity of their current case, aka the Enfield poltergeist. I made the finished cut, by the skin of my teeth I imagine. If you are so inclined, look out for a lightly moustachioed fella with curly hair sitting at the bar. Yes, that’s me.

Ingmar Bergman called him the greatest director. Lars Von Trier calls him “God.” The legendary Russian filmmaker Andrei Tarkovsky, who died in 1986 aged only 54, is one of the most influential in the history of the medium, a cinematic philosopher who was constantly at odds with the Soviet government, which saw subversiveness in his morosely dreamy films… as, indeed, there may well have been. Tarkovsky called his style of filmmaking “sculpting in time,” and the ambiguous moodiness of his work often encompassed a particular Russian-flavored tumultuousness on the small scale of a human life reflected against human history, full of tragedy, trauma, and torment. My day started with me balancing emails and waiting at the InterContinental for my first interview of the day: American Fable. I spoke to the director for a podcast I am also working for during SXSW, One of Us, and it went really well. It always feels good to be the first interviewer because you know you’ll be on time and you’ll probably also have the chance to run over time and ruin everyone’s schedule for the rest of the day.
As I mentioned yesterday, American Fable is incredible, so talking with Anne Hamilton about her movie was equally special. She had so much to say about her craft, and I cannot wait for people to hear it.

For the first time, iconic cookie brand Nestle Toll House is sponsoring a series on YouTube, and in doing so, it has turn to a chef with a bright disposition and a charming demeanor. Ashley Adams, co-founder of the Feast Of Fiction YouTube channel, is the host of Bake My Day, a cooking web series that makes use of Nestle Toll House products.
On Feast Of Fiction, Adams and co-host Jimmy Wong craft recipes based on famous foodstuffs from fictional worlds. Bake My Day, on the other hand, is a bit more straightforward. Its recipes, such as chocolate quesadillas and “Scotcheroos,” are somewhat offbeat, but Adams’ presentation style, like many of the chefs on the Food Network, is full of smiles and energy. She even adds in a bit of Alton Brown-esque goofiness for good measure.
Upcoming Bake My Day episodes will throw some wrinkles into the show’s formula.

Kristin Cavallari isn't experiencing that pregnancy glow the third time around... Quite the opposite, in fact! During a recent interview with Byrdie.com, the Hills alum revealed she gets "more breakouts and clogged pores during pregnancy." Her fix? "I recently rediscovered my Clarisonic," she said, "and it honestly makes a huge difference." That's a good thing, but Kristin isn't the type who likes to slather on the concealer to hide those rough spots. "My day-to-day beauty routine has always been no-fuss," she also said. "I'm not a big makeup girl during the day. But with kids, I usually have about two minutes to get ready in the morning since they're...

Life has gotten a little crazier for Hilaria Baldwin now that she's mommy to two tiny tots, but Alec Baldwin's lady still managed to step out for the Mission: Impossible—Rogue Nation premiere in New York City last night. The yoga instructor, along with the actor and his daughter Ireland Baldwin, all attended the event at the Big Apple, and Hilaria stopped to chat with E! News about how things are going with her newborn son Rafael Thomas Baldwin, who entered the world just last month. "My day never ends. It never begins and it never ends, because I'm up every two hours with him and he sleeps in bed with us," she tells us, but adds that she does get a little bit of help from time to time from...

Whether making a feature or short film, a great amount of time goes into the process. The writing, the shooting, the editing and then getting your film shown… every filmmaker makes the arduous journey and dreams one day they’ll hear their names announced on Oscar nominations morning.
For one such filmmaking team, Mat Kirkby and James Lucas, the dream became reality on January 16 when their short film, The Phone Call, was among the five films nominated for an Academy Award in the Best Short Film category.
Their emotional film follows Heather, (played by Oscar nominee Sally Hawkins), a shy lady who works at a helpline call centre. When she receives a phone call from a mystery man (played by Oscar winner Jim Broadbent) she has no idea that the encounter will change her life forever.

Gwyneth Paltrow is comfortable in her own skin! The "Thanks for Sharing" actress showed off her fresh face via Instagram on Tuesday. In the photo, Gwyn shows the before and after shot of her super glam makeover. "My day-to-night transformation," the mother-of-two captioned the candid snap. On the left, Paltrow poses without a stitch of makeup on, and at 42-years-old, the blonde beauty still has flawless skin! Paltrow -- who's split from Chris Martin after 10 plus years of marriage last March -- recently opened up about her ex in an interview with Harper's Bazaar. "Of course, there are times when I think it would have been better if we had stayed married, which is always what your children want," she told the mag. "But we have been able to solidify this friendship, so that we’re really close."You'd never be able to tell that this is the face...

There's no doubt that Gwyneth Paltrow is a natural beauty, but the Oscar winner gave us even more proof in her latest Instagram selfie. Paltrow, who is shown in a side-by-side split, gave fans a glimpse inside her glamorous makeover from a fresh-faced, makeup-free beauty to a sleek, red carpet-ready star. It's sort of a bummer to me that the two films at the forefront of this year's Best Documentary Oscar race — Laura Poitros' "Citizenfour" and Steve James' "Life Itself," each of which I like just fine — can't really hold a candle to some of the very best films in contention, whether "The Overnighters" (my favorite), "Tales of the Grim Sleeper," "Virunga," etc. Alas, that's how it's shaping up. And that's just, like, my opinion, man. But I get it. We must protect whistleblowers and the spotlight of the Oscars is important for this kind of thing, yada, yada, yada. (Not that there isn't a ton of nuance in this situation to be chewed on no matter what side of the political line you fall on.) But... Anyway, Poitros' film won the International Documentary Association's Best Feature prize Friday night, out of a field of nominees that included the aforementioned "Grim...

Fox now will be serving up Bob’s Burgers — and not John Mulaney — on Sundays at 9:30/8:30c.
In the wake of waning ratings for the poorly received Seinfeld-lite sitcom, the network has announced that Mulaney will now air Sundays at 7:30/8:30, occupying Bob’s Burgers‘ time slot — and as such, given football scheduling, won’t return until Nov. 23.
The Emmy-winning Bob’s Burgers meanwhile will christen its new Sundays-at-9:30 home starting this weekend, leading out of a fresh, Thanksgiving-themed episode of Family Guy.

So – where were we?
I’d had a 7 mm. golden nugget lodged in my right kidney. That got removed but then I went into the hospital with sepsis and acute urinary infection. That led to the discovery that I’d had a heart attack, much to my amazement. I’d felt nothing; it was revealed in chemical markers. Further investigation showed that while the heart itself was okay, I needed a triple bypass.
Well, that was a stunner.
The procedure is called a coronary artery bypass graft, known as a Cabg, sometimes called a “cabbage.” Which is a little disconcerting. Working on my heart is a cabbage.
It’s a relatively recent procedure, starting up in the ‘60s. It’s not uncommon now and they’ve gotten pretty...

BAFTA-winning naturalist Steve Backshall is the ninth celebrity to be confirmed for this year's Strictly Come Dancing.
He made the announcement today (August 25) live on BBC Breakfast.
Backshall won two BAFTAs in 2011, including Best Children's Television Presenter, and is best known for presenting Cbbc's flagship wildlife programme Deadly 60 and spin-off Deadly Pole to Pole. He is also a published author.
His career has seen him confront some of nature's most terrifying creatures, including diving with great white sharks, catching a king cobra and being bitten by crocodiles.
Backshall said that he considers Strictly to be more of a challenge than his naturalist work, saying: "My day job filming wildlife in jungles and swamps is nothing like as scary as what is ahead.
"I think Strictly Come Dancing is going to be my wildest challenge by far!"
He joins already-confirmed celebrities Frankie Bridge, Judy Murray, Alison Hammond, Thom Evans, Simon Webbe,...

One of the best thrillers of the year takes place inside one car. Said car is being driven by Ivan Locke, played by Tom Hardy.

Shooting Locke, you did the drive down the motorway 18-20 times for real to film it, and pulled together your cut from there. Were you aiming for the claustrophobia of a small theatre?
Yeah. While making Hummingbird, we tested the cameras by shooting from moving vehicles. Then we would view the test footage in a cinema, and I found it really good. So I wanted...

Pictures of Idris Elba filming his upcoming movie, A Hundred Streets, in London on Tuesday started a heated debate this week. People weren't so interested in the actor's handsome looks or fit frame draped by a svelte suit, but rather the situation in his pants. As the pictures show, something very long was clearly beneath the right side of his trousers. Just what was it exactly: a random object or a burgeoning bulge? According to 52% of readers who took the hilarious Popsugar Love & Sex poll, it definitely seemed like the real deal. As speculation continued on Saturday, the actor set the record straight on Twitter: "The good news is i got a shit load of followers. The bad news is, that is a mic wire. #egowentintospaceshipmodethough," he wrote. The good news is i got a shit load of followers. Having scripted films like Eastern Promises and Closed Circuit, Steven Knight will argue to you that he writes conventional Hollywood stories that get made into conventional films. However, as a burgeoning director, he distances from such expectation with his second behind-the-camera project Locke, which stars The Dark Knight Rises star Tom Hardy in a car, dealing with an “ordinary tragedy” all while driving in the middle of the night. A handsfree version of My Dinner with Andre filmmaking, Locke is a creative force that shows the potential of voice performance and dialogue for vivid storytelling, and features a landmark performance from Hardy.
Knight previously directed the curious Jason Statham drama Redemption, which is known by the less embarrassing title of Hummingbird elsewhere in the world. Amongst many projects listed on IMDb, Knight is currently scripting The Hundred-Foot Journey which is set to star Helen Mirren, along with a mysterious WWII film with Brad Pitt.

Attention, our audience’s and our own — it’s a valued commodity these days. We struggle to command our audience’s attention, for them to discover our work and then, once they’ve discovered it, to actually focus on it. Meanwhile, we struggle to focus our own attention, to fight our society’s weapons of mass distraction so we can not just see our work to completion but fully discover the meanings within it. What role does attention play in your work? Can you discuss an instance where you thought about some aspect of attention when it came to your film? My day job […]...
