I genuinely wept from queer joy
everfq20 October 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This show was a gift from Sappho to heal the queer community from years of tv baiting and burying us.

Let's start with Izzy. Con O'Neill absolutely nailed every tiny expression and movement of someone dealing with internalized homophobia. We see that initial resistance and feelings of shame. It's something that takes a long time to unlearn. But then you put on your makeup and sing while your friends cheer you on and you finally feel accepted.

Drag is so often used as a punchline, and for OFMD to have literally two of the most masculine characters on the show dress in drag and be showered in praise and acclaim by their friends, their found family- it's more than I could ever imagine.

That scene(while unfortunately brief, thanks a lot Ned) where Izzy sings La Vie En Rose and kisses Wee John's hand while Roach dances with Fang and Archie, Olu, and Jim dance together and Ed and Stede have their quiet moment- I've never seen anything that better encapsulated queer joy. That was the heart of the show for me, probably my favorite scene in the entire show. Queerness is community, it's found family, it's that feeling of knowing that you are safe, and you are loved.

Pure Joy!
sheardbecki20 October 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This episode really does have it all! The beautiful voice of Izzy singing Piaf... in English and French... the wonderful visuals of Wee John dressed as Calypso... the excitement and satisfaction of watching Stede defeat a maniac, violin playing, torturer pirate... the joy of comradeship and love amongst this beautiful Revenge Pirate Crew... and of course the 'Big moment' we've all been waiting for... when Stede and Blackbeard lose their minds and let the passion run free!! 😍👍 If it had been the last TV program I had been able to watch in my life... I would have died happy! I am so in love with this show and it's amazing characters. They make me happy... watching it feels good! And God knows, we need some joy in the world right now! Thank you to all those involved in delivering us such joy!

Self-love and celebration
c-1538425 October 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This is a joyous episode which emanates self-love and celebration. All departments have come together to create such a beautiful episode. The sets are gorgeously decorated, the characters' hair, makeup and costumes are wonderful, the lighting is stunning, and the music is beautifully complementary. The song sung by Con O'Neill during the party scene is absolutely magnificent. The love and community amongst the characters that shines through in this episode is a joy to behold and to feel as a viewer. It is wonderful to see them all be completely themselves and feel safe and loved as part of the crew. The resolution with the torturers suits the show perfectly. This is such a wonderful episode!

really delightful
madra_rua_7 November 2023
I try not to put spoilers in these reviews and it's hard to know how to approach this one without giving anything away, but there's a reason the phrase people keep using to describe Our Flag Means Death is "queer joy." There's an adorable cameo by Taika Waititi's daughters; the crew comes together for a celebration that showcases the exact vibe that made people fall in love with this show; the crew is attacked by the sort of villain who does things like tie up the two main characters on a sofa next to each other and force them to talk about their feelings; Stede and Blackbeard's relationship evolves to a new level. It's hard to ask for anything more.

Izzy gets a big moment here that's incredibly sweet and touching. However, as with a lot of his arc this season, it's beautifully acted but as far as the writing goes it feels a little unearned. He moved from where he was two episodes ago to suddenly being comfortable behaving the way he does here awfully quickly, with very little struggle or hesitation, and it doesn't entirely make sense; but as usual, Con O'Neill's outstanding performance really sells it. Still, it would have been nice to have more time for the rest of the crew to do more than stand around looking great in their party costumes.

Queer joy at its best !
lesbullesauplafond7 November 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This episode was incredibly heartwarming, and actually exceeded everything I could ever have hoped for Izzy's character growth !

The visuals were absolutely stunning. If there was one scene that had to be carefully picked from the whole show to describe how much of an amazing series it is, it would be Izzy singing La Vie En Rose, surrounded by the whole crew. (This scene is now locked forever in my heart, queer joy at its best !)

Even the party crashing scene orchestrated by that violin-maniac Ned Low wasn't enough to take away the crew's determination to keep the celebration going later. (Well, Roach actually really enjoyed the torture part though).

One of the most joyful and amazing episode for sure !

Best episode of the entire season!
penniellington3 November 2023
Warning: Spoilers
A perfect episode! They crammed so much into 30 minutes!

The gang together and happy!

A party!

A sadistic torturer out to harm the gang, but taken down by Stede!

WEE JOHN AND IZZY IN DRAG!

Izzy singing La Vien Rose in English and French!

ED & STEDE HOOKING UP!

Fang got a pet!

It was funny, it was scary, it was sad, it was sexy, it was simply put, just a gorgeous episode. Everything you want television to be.

Con O'Neill absolutely owned the episode and that's saying something. He's a gift to the world .

And I cackled over Roach enjoying the torture because he's a maniac. Viva la Roach.

A full 10/10 for this episode. Perfect. No notes.

My happy place of season 2
mikaelasvensson-5629230 November 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This episode is my happy place of season two. It's like a warm, rich soup of queer love and joy. Wee John in drag as Calypso is a delight and Izzy in singing La vie en Rose heals my heart every time.

I return to this episode if I want to feel comforted and relaxed, and it delivers each time. Even though there are some dark themes with Ned Low, I still consider this the happiest episode of season 2.

It's an episode that really showcases the brilliance of all the cast, and how all the different characters come together and form a rich tapestry of the variety of the human experience.

My only regret is that we didn't get to witness a dance between Ed and Stede.

Queer Joy
sirpadfoot20 November 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This show is often discussed as a love letter to queer people and this episode felt like the culmination of that queer joy. Wee John in drag as a tribute to Kristian Nairn's drag queen days, Jim with drawn on facial hair both goofy and affirming, Ed trying so hard to do better, Stede taking up the role of protector of his crew without changing his values or people first management style, Izzy taking a leap and letting himself be vulnerable and creative, it's all so lovely. The Ned Low element could have made it feel like a downer but instead they came away feeling like their version of pirating *works* they don't have to be anybody but themselves and they will still survive and thrive. And then of course our whim-prone lovers finally giving into the sexual tension was perfect. The only things that could have made it better were Archie, Oluwande, and Jim interacting more and a Gentlebeard dance. Lovely definitely on my rewatch list.

Favourite Ep!!!

Warning: Spoilers
I really love this show so much, and this episode is probably my favourite of the series!!! Con O'Neill's song was so beautiful, I didn't know he could sing and I'm really glad he was able to for this episode. Ned Lowe was a great character and seeing Stede kill him, and his reaction to that, really helps us see his mindset for the rest of the season. Wee John's Calypso look was seriously gorgeous too, and I love that he dolled Izzy up. The lighting in this episode was really nice too. The blues, purples, and pinks looked beautiful. Oh! And Taika's (Blackbeard) kids played the street urchins. Really hoping we get a S3!

Cinematic Brilliance, Heartfelt Bonds, and Unforgettable Character Journeys
sebastianchamra10 January 2024
"Calypso's Birthday" left me utterly captivated and thoroughly entertained. The outstanding cinematography in this episode is a visual feast, seamlessly blending vibrant colors and stunning landscapes, enhancing the overall viewing experience. The careful attention to detail and composition truly sets this show apart. The lighting, scene decor, costumes, and overall aesthetic was an absolute marvel to watch.

One of the standout elements is the exploration of the queer found-family dynamics. The camaraderie among the characters, forged through shared adventures, challenges and love for one another, adds a layer of warmth and depth to the narrative. It's heartening to witness the bonds between the crew members evolve, creating a sense of unity that resonates throughout this episode.

The themes woven into "Calypso's Birthday" are both thought-provoking and emotionally resonant. The show skillfully delves into concepts of identity, loyalty, and the pursuit of freedom, making it more than just a pirate comedy. These thematic undercurrents contribute significantly to the overall richness of the storytelling.

Romance is delicately interwoven into the narrative, adding a touch of tenderness amidst the high-seas chaos. The genuine and heartfelt moments shared between characters add a layer of authenticity to the relationships, making them compelling and relatable.

Stede Bonnet's character arc takes center stage in this episode, and the journey of self-discovery he embarks on is nothing short of captivating. The nuanced portrayal of his growth and transformation adds depth to the character, making him all the more endearing. Izzy Hands' arc, as well, is handled with care, providing a delicate exploration of identity and acceptance for this once tortured and hardened character.

The soundtrack of "Calypso's Birthday" deserves special mention. The carefully curated music not only complements the on-screen action but also elevates the emotional impact of key scenes. The synergy between visuals and sound enhances the immersive quality of the episode. Special shout out to actor Con O'neill for giving a captivating performance of 'La Vie en Rose' by Edith Piaf in both english and french, it really ties the whole episode together.

Lastly, the atmosphere created in this installment is simply intoxicating. The show masterfully transports viewers into its world, immersing them in the pirate life with a perfect blend of humor, drama, adventure and of course romance.

In conclusion, "Calypso's Birthday" is a triumph on multiple fronts - from its breathtaking cinematography and exploration of found-family dynamics to its engaging character arcs, heartfelt romance, evocative soundtrack, and immersive atmosphere. This episode stands as a testament to the exceptional storytelling prowess of Our Flag Means Death, leaving me eagerly anticipating more from this remarkable series.

A Birthday Party You Want to Be At!
allichinn17 December 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This is my favorite episode of season 2, I just love seeing the crew of the Revenge together having a good ol time. Just like they did in Season 1, it makes you want to have your own party for Calypso's birthday.

You will also see a cameo from Taika's adorable kids as well. I love how Rhys & Taika have there kids in the show it is adorable.

Once the party starts later in the evening, Izzy and Little Jon come out and wow the entire crew. Which gets abruptly interrupted by the jealous and competitive Pirate Ned Low. Who is looking for Blackbeard to settle the score, which Stede saves the night. I won't go into more detail, but go watch this episode to see what happens at the end.

Beautiful
mylifeiskindaok9 January 2024
Where to even begin; the set design and costume design in this episode are a force to be reckoned with. The visuals are stunning and so intricate down to every last detail. The makeup crew also deserves a shoutout to the phenomenal job they did with all of the characters at the party, and truly transformed what we thought we knew about some of the characters. It was full of romance and thrills (and comedy of course) and I couldn't have asked for a better episode. I won't spoil anything but I have to say that this episode really hits the peak of the season, culminating so much of what everything has been leading up to. Amazing work all around.

Best of the season
brownelizard9 January 2024
Perfectly embraces the whole crew with this episode, I watch it on repeat and the soundtrack when I can't visually pay attention is beautiful feelings. Izzy Hands singing is such a glorious thing and I appreciate both renditions of the song they included, definitely stick around until the end of the credits for that second one and a short piece not to miss of Fang .

I love the imagery and the behind the scenes work to bring Calypso's birthday to life, you can tell the crew each believes in the show and celebration of everything they share with this episode.

Glad they included the family of the show writers in there for fun as well.

My favourite episode
lolafarquhar10 January 2024
My favourite episode of the season I think. There was so much joy and love and absolute fun in this episode, not to mention the set dec and design was incredible! Shout out to the crew for pulling off such a magical setting, and all the decorations on board The Revenge. I especially loved the attention to detail when leaving only the green lanterns on when a change in mood was required due to the situation at hand. Izzy's singing was such a treat, unexpected but wholly beautiful, and the costume was once again unparalleled. Thank you to each and every member of the cast and crew for such an incredible episode, as a crew!

Best episode of the season
ditnu9 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
This episode had so many things I love: the crew coming together and having fun, Wee John being fabulous in drag, Roach being excited by being tortured, Izzy singing beautifully which actually caused my jaw to be on the floor. And of course Ed and Stede deciding to NOT take things slow after all. The set dressing of the party was amazing as well, so much attention to detail. The only thing that was missing was Ed and Stede slow dancing as they were about to do, right when Ned showed up. Curse you Ned! I was happy to have him gone but also concerned for Stede's wellbeing after that... Not something I was expecting Stede to do.

The DESIGN
rachelferat12 January 2024
This episode is absolutely brilliant. The writing is great, but the design is perfection. A perfect blend of historical inspiration and queer joy exemplified.

The whole show is a gem, but this episode stands out. The brilliance of having the important plot arcs resolve together and celebrating them with a visual exploration of gender, queerness, costume play, and perfomance epitomizes the best things about Our Flag Means Death. This is a show where anything is possible in the name of self-actualization. Where self-acceptance is the most valued goal, and accepting and celebrating others is a close second.

I need more.

Raise your MFing glasses!
CrazyMRFan12 January 2024
Our Flag Means Death has some beautiful cinematography, sets, costumes, the list goes on, but never has it looked so beautiful as this episode, with The Revenge decked out in gorgeous florals, bathed in purples and blues, and everyone dressed to the (piratey) nines! And no one was more stunning than Wee John, for reasons obvious in the episode. This one instantly goes into the OFMD Hall of Fame for the sheer queer joy emanating from every aspect of the episode - the expressions of self, the celebration of that by a found family of ragtag outsiders, an important romantic milestone for our main couple, and the cathartic thrill of making it through another perilous ordeal with your best crewmates by your side.

Calypso's Birthday is OUR birthday gift.
shaugen-3520515 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
This episode is a real gift to the viewers. Stede helps Ed to heal by suggesting they turn "poison into positivity" by letting the crew have a party for Calypso's Birthday. We are treated to seeing Taika's two daughters on screen playing two little gutter rats when they go to buy party supplies. It's hilarious seeing Ed (Taika) hand his daughter's knives and bags of money while he tells them not to become pirates. The party is a big success with Wee John dressed as Calypso and Izzy wearing beautiful makeup so he could also have a "look." Ed and Stede look over the crew celebrating and bask in the idea that Ed has successfully turned poison into positivity. Just as Stede and Ed seem to be headed to the dance floor, the ship is under attack by Pirate Ned Low who is angry that Blackbeard broke his record of consecutive raids. Ned is known to torture his conquests and proceeds to lead his mercenaries on to this end. Throughout the torturing, Ed protects Stede and tries to get Ned to only go after him and not Stede. Stede uses his wit to charm the mercenaries who turn on Ned Low. The scene has changed and now Ned is the captured one and he expects Blackbeard to revenge him. Instead Blackbeard refuses and says he isn't worth the poison. After Ned Low insults Blackbeard, Stede gets so fired up about the torture of his crew and the insults toward Ed and uses his sword to force Low out on the plank. Ed warns him not to do it, but Stede gets so emotional that he throws Ned's fiddle at him causing him to fall into the water and die. Stede is so upset that he leaves for his quarters, followed shortly later by Ed who goes to check on him. While Izzy is singing a beautiful rendition of La Vie En Rose, Stede grabs Ed and pushes him to the wall where their passion is finally unleashed. The ending scene is everything the viewer has wanted. Ed and Stede are together. Bring on Episode 7.

A Symphony of Love on the High Seas
josephdmartinez19 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
When queer stories are presented in a fashion that lets is characters fully express themselves in a space where being queer is a non-issues, fireworks truly result. It was a beautiful episode that really dived deep to find the buried treasure inside the crew of The Revenge, especially our favorite little bastard, and scene stealing songbird, Izzy. His journey up to this chapter has been tumultuous, but as he has gained acceptance and love from the crew, Izzy continued to grow and let his vulnerabilities show in a way that could only result in a viewers eyes welling up. We also get to see fun development between our two leads. Ed is able to show how great he is with kids and hopefully we will be able to see him be just as great with Stede's kids. Stede also gets to develop as a leader and finds assurance that his style of pirating not only works for his crew but also appeals to the crew attacking and torturing them. The show culminates with fireworks and a beautiful reprise from Con O'neil's Izzy that will leave you seeing things with rose tinted glasses.

This episode is a love letter to the queer community
angelamguzman13 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
I was so enthralled with the entirety of this episode. I think I've watched Izzy sing La Vie En Rose more times than I can count now. This show is honestly a cut above the rest. This episode was ambitious, joyful, and really shined a light on the ins and outs of love and queerness. The themes are complex, maybe moreso than one would think, but they were executed beautifully. David Jenkins saw what he had to do to make it sparkle (quite literally!) and said, "okay but let me go beyond that" and we have this gem of an episode. Even more of a reason why we are in desperate need of a season 3. More beautiful stories like this one are called for. Lovely job.

My Absolute Favorite of the Season
kshiran-3801624 January 2024
Spoiler-light? I'm trying to not give away too much.

In a media landscape where everyone figures themselves out at 17 or 20 or the late late age of 30, it's so good seeing myself for once. Older and wiser but also just as confused. Good to see Izzy learning who he really is and how he can connect to others, good to see Stede and Ed learning how to care for one another, good to see the new-old crew stretching themselves and sharing joy. You can want to feel beautiful when you're seven foot tall and bearded or if you're older it's your very first time even admitting it matters to you. You can want to have a community around to support you through your journey. (And Roach, in the background, absolutely having the time of his life through this entire episode doesn't hurt either!)

MY FAVORITE EPISODE <333
razzapple_15 January 2024
Oh my god I literally can't even begin to explain how much I love this episode. Literally everything was so perfect. This show is so unpredictable, what happened in this episode was literally the last thing I expected and I love it. It was executed so beautifully, when I say this show captures the feeling of love and community better than any other I've seen, this is what I mean.

Izzy's character development makes me sob oh my god, seeing him in this episode was THERAPY. It was so sweet and lovely, I adore it so much. And seeing Wee John get to shine as well?? So amazing, I love the constant focus on each character throughout the show, it really brings the whole concept of "as a crew" into light.

Another thing I love about this episode that kind of contrasts the rest, is how it marks the beginning of Stede's next era. Throughout the next episodes we see Stede take a bit of a turn, starting with the rather traumatic events of this one. I love how they managed to capture that idea, repeating the same flashbacks again and showing the distress that leads into the switch in his mentality and character development over the rest of the season, despite the episode being otherwise a light-hearted and joyful experience.

The execution of this episode was just perfect, the cinematography and set design was gorgeous, the makeup and costume design was beautiful, the acting was amazing (Con O'Neill's performance was especially outstanding) and everything else. This episode was genuinely perfect, I love it so much.

An unexpetced delight
bellaschnellara19 February 2024
That was such a lovely episode. Well, it contained some genuinely weird torture and Ed explaining a couple of children the mechanics of stabbing someone, but other than that: lovely :)

It was much quieter, I felt, than the previous episodes. There's a bit of introspection from Ed's side (who is out of the burlap sac again). He wants to make amends for his previous rampage and Stede has an idea how to help him with that.

The grand finale though... not so quiet. First of all, Wee John and Izzy look spectecular. Izzy's performance is dazzling. The entire crew partying and singing and dancing, so wonderful to see. They all deserve something nice. Well, and Ed and Stede... good for them.

Favourite line: "We're sort of in the, like, pre-revenge window."

Colorful community
jclarraga14 January 2024
Don't even get me started about this episode! The lights, the costumes, the make-up! Con O'Neill's beautiful voice! The set design in this episode, considering the budget cuts that this show faced in season 2, was spectacular and so fun to watch on screen. The color palette is so vibrant and playful, and the dark backdrop of the night sky only helps those colors to pop out at you. Additionally, the LGBT representation is top tier. I love how the writers were able to replicate the feeling of community brought about by drag culture. We get to see some great character development too as this pirate family comes into their own and learns more about their own desires.

The best episode?
suzanne-karrschmidt24 February 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Stede lets the crew have a party for made-up reasons, makes a villainous torturer party crasher walk the plank, and takes Ed to bed in a heightened emotional state after his first intentional kill. Izzy and Wee John appear in drag, and Izzy sings La Vie En Rose, finally comfortable with himself now that the crew have embraced him and given him the unicorn's leg. Emotions run high, from the glee of party planning to the romantic interludes. Deeply passionate, the pair share a smoldering wall kiss, but Stede still looks to Ed for consent before moving to the bed. Fireworks ensue inside and literally, outside, making "Stede becomes a man" canon.
