2019 was a mixed bag when it comes to reproductive rights. While the year saw draconian abortion legislation introduced in states like Alabama, Georgia, and Ohio, the nationwide backlash arguably lent greater momentum to the abortion rights movement, catapulting it to the center of cultural conversation.
As a result, the once-taboo topic of abortion has become increasingly commonplace in popular culture, per an annual Abortion Onscreen Report released by Ansirh (Advancing New Standards In Reproductive Health). Released yesterday, the report found a record number of TV shows in 2019 featured a discussion...

Syfy has announced it is renewing the vampire show for a fifth and final outing. The news comes only a few days ahead of the season 4 finale, which airs on Dec. 20.
“Van Helsing” is set in a world dominated and controlled by vampires. Season 4 continues the story of Vanessa Van Helsing and her band of heroes as they fight to reclaim the world after vampires took over during “The Rising.”
The most recent season of the show is averaging just under 300,000 total viewers through 12 episodes in the Live+Same Day ratings, down from the 380,000 average viewers who tuned in to season 3. Those numbers place it as the second least watched series on the network, only in front of “Happy!” which was canceled after a single season back in June.

Big choruses. Big beats. And most of all, big ballads — big yearning ballads and big inspirational ballads.
That’s what you’ll find in the 75 songs that qualified in this year’s race for the Academy Award for Best Original Song. The Academy used to release its annual list of eligible songs, but it halted that practice last year, when it instituted a 15-film shortlist in the category for the first time. But TheWrap obtained this year’s list of eligible songs and listened to every one of them.
And while the songwriters and performers range from Beyoncé to Thom Yorke, Elton John to Taylor Swift, Jackson Browne to Pharrell Williams, similar themes and similar sounds abound.

Sony’s unceremonious split with Marvel has left fans with a lot of unanswered questions. Where the Spider-Man franchise will go from here? How will the Avengers will explain the web-head’s abrupt absence? Perhaps most pressing of all, what will happen to the romance budding between Happy and Aunt May?
Now that Peter Parker is out of the McU, so too is his family. This means that his Aunt May can no longer entertain an onscreen relationship with Harold “Happy” Hogan. The adorable flirtation began picking up speed in Spider-Man: Far From Home and had plenty of moviegoers excited for what would happen between the two of them next. Unfortunately, their courtship is dead in the water unless the two studios reconcile.

If Playmobil: The Movie had a (memorable) theme song it would be Everything is Meh. Not offensive, actively unpleasant or particularly poor, just…meh. In fact, Playmobil: The Movie is exactly the sort of film which springs to mind when someone tells you that a Playmobil movie exists.
Marla and Charlie Brenner make a formidable team. When the siblings play, the world falls away and they are free to roam their imaginary Playmobil universe together. The Knight and The Viking are the tiny alter egos who unite and fight at their command, nothing is impossible for this adventurous pair.
Marla (Anya Taylor-Joy) has an appetite for adventure in the real world too. Elaborate travel plans festoon her bedroom and the first big song of the movie is peppered with excited exclamations over all the bright things the future will bring. Then tragically the bubble bursts.

Beyonce at the Grammys is like Lucy and the football: every time Charlie Brown tries to kick it, it’s pulled right out from under him. She has been nominated for Album of the Year three times and lost three times. She’s not the only person who has failed to snag the top award that often, but the last two times she lost were both upsets. Could she finally win with her latest critically acclaimed set, “Homecoming”? If so, it would be the first live album to prevail in a quarter century.

The George R.R. Martin drama “Nightflyers” has been canceled by Syfy after only one season.
Based on the novella from the mastermind behind “Game of Thrones,” the show was seen as a big gamble for the NBCUniversal-owned cable network, as it represented the most expensive series it had ever developed. The network attempted to spark interest by releasing the entire series at once across its digital platforms on Dec. 2, but the show never really took flight, with its finale garnering only 420,000 live viewers, a drop-off from 623,000 for the premiere.
The series followed a crew of eight scientists, led by a reclusive captain, on a spaceship called The Nightflyer. The tight-knit group set out on an expedition to discover and make contact alien life, but when a series of horrifying and violent events occur, they begin to question each other and their camaraderie becomes a fight for survival.

The race for Best Pop Solo Performance at the Grammys may be wide open since none of the nominees in the category are up for Record of the Year or Song of the Year. But even when there is a general field nominee in the running there have often been upsets, so we may not be able to rule anyone out of this contest.
Ariana Grande is nominated for “God is a Woman.” It was a top-10 hit, and Grande is a powerhouse female vocalist; that has been a winning formula for Adele, who has won this category three times, more than anyone else since men and women were merged into one solo performance category in 2012.
But Adele usually dominated the general field categories too, while Grande was snubbed in the top races, so she’ll try to follow Ed Sheeran‘s path instead. Sheeran was surprisingly left out of the top categories last year,...

To the religious sceptic, a lot of miracles read smoother as metaphors: the bread not literal flesh, the wine not blood. What remains is the impulse to spin meaning, wherever it can be found, into comforting forms. In Alice Rohrwacher’s films, motifs of faith and folklore thread brief magic into working class lives. Her characters summon the immaterial to sensuous effect: a young girl cups a ray of sunlight in a dark barn, pooled warmth held against her mouth as if to drink; after a day of unpaid labor, weary workers blow wind at the turned back of a young marquis, the force of their defiance ferried by a mouth-made breeze. These innocuous transformations are reprieve from a hostile world, where the furtive movements of a changing nation are set against pockets of defiant time. In Corpo Celeste (2011), a young girl watches the Catholic church yoke its flagging customs...

Rihanna is the latest musician on a long list of artists who aren’t happy with Donald Trump using their music during his rallies or other events. The Ocean’s 8 actress found out from Washington Post White House Bureau Chief Philip Rucker that Trump used one of her hit songs at his rally in Tennessee Sunday and she wasn’t having it.
“It’s been said a million times, but here’s a million and one — Trump’s rallies are unlike anything else in politics,” tweeted Rucker. “Currently, Rihanna’s ‘Don’t Stop the Music’ is blaring in Chattanooga as aides toss free Trump T-shirts into the crowd, like a ball game. Everyone’s loving it.”
It didn’t take long for Rihanna’s fans to alert the icon that Trump was using her song without her knowledge so she took to Twitter and responded to Rucker saying: “Not for much longer…...

In a stark turnaround from previous years, Netflix is having an incredible fall when it comes their original films, with the release of critically acclaimed films such as Happy as Lazzaro, Shirkers, The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, The Other Side of the Wind, Private Life, and Roma. Written by Eric Heisserer (Arrival), Bird Box follows the story of Sandra Bullock’s Malorie, a woman who is trying desperately to save her family from a mysterious force that kills you once you make eye contact with it. Sports entertainment fans should be happy: WWE Superstar The Big Show — real name Paul Wight — is set to recur on Season 2 of Syfy series “Happy.”
“The World’s Largest Athlete” will play Big Pink, the cellmate of Mr. Blue (Ritchie Coster), on five episodes of the upcoming run.
“Happy” stars Christopher Meloni as Nic Sax, a corrupt ex-detective-turned-hitman whose life is changed forever when an imaginary and extremely positive blue-winged horse named Happy (voiced by Patton Oswalt) appears.
Wight’s TV and film credits include “Psych,” “Royal Pains,” “Burn Notice,” “The Waterboy,” “Star Trek: Enterprises” and “MacGruber.”
Oh, and he’s also done some professional wrestling. The six-time world champion is the first wrestler in history to capture the WWE, WCW and Ecw Championships.
Wight is repped by Apa and Sam Perlmutter Law Office.

Six of the 11 acts that took to the stage on Tuesday’s first live semifinal of “America’s Got Talent” were eliminated from the competition during Wednesday’s results episode. All of those that were bounced had been good enough to make it through the audition process and survive the judge cuts phase. But they did not win over enough viewers to number among the five acts that move on to the finals of season 13 of “Agt” that start in two weeks.
Those that didn’t make the cut on live show 4 were the singers Amanda Mena, Makayla Phillips and Us the Duo; multimedia artists Front Pictures; dance troupe Junior New System; and children’s choir Voices of Hope. Which of the six acts that was axed on Wednesday will you miss the most? Read our recaps of their performances and then cast your vote in our poll at the bottom of this post.

"I'm calling about a missing boy. Someone important, a Marquis." The Match Factory released a new trailer for the film Happy as Lazzaro, originally titled Lazzaro felice, the latest film made by acclaimed Italian filmmaker Alice Rohrwacher. This premiered at the Cannes Film Festival this summer in competition, and it was highly regarded as one of the best of the festival, despite not winning any awards. It's an odd, awkward film about a boy named Lazzaro who works as a farming peasant on a tobacco farm in Italy. About halfway through, the film jumps in time to the modern day where he ends up in a city searching for his friends and family. Adriano Tardiolo stars as Lazzaro, and the cast includes Luca Chikovani, Agnese Graziani, Alba Rohrwacher, Sergi López, Natalino Balasso, Tommaso Ragno, and Nicoletta Braschi. Expect to hear a lot more about this film by the end of the year,...

Kenya Barris and Pharrell Williams will collaborate on a stage musical about Juneteenth, the African-American holiday honoring the date that U.S. Army ships forced Texas landowners to free the last of their slaves. It is viewed as the last day of slavery in the United States.
It’s a familiar subject for Barris. The Season 4 premiere of his hit ABC series “Black-ish” had a musical episode that focused on an 1865 version of the Johnsons, the family at the center of the sitcom. Barris will write the libretto with Peter Saji, his “Black-ish” colleague.
Williams is a 10-time Grammy winner, whose songs include “Happy” and “Freedom.” He will compose the music and lyrics, and produce under his company I Am Other with partner Mimi Valdés. Saji will also produce the show.

Illumination and Universal Pictures have released the first trailer for their holiday animated film The Grinch, with Benedict Cumberbatch lending his voice to the well-known Christmas menace.
