The Notebook Primer introduces readers to some of the most important figures, films, genres, and movements in film history. The success of his latest release, Wife of a Spy (2020), has once again positioned Kiyoshi Kurosawa atop the list of international cinema's most celebrated filmmakers. Indeed, a consistency in distinct systems of narrative and audiovisual expression has been central to Kurosawa's cinema, manifest in films spanning multiple genres and locations and relayed in mutable tones and mesmeric formal motifs. And though it took time to find traction with a global audience, this approach was something...

Release Date: October 30, 2018
Platform: PS4 (reviewed), Xbo, PC
Developer: Cyanide Studios
Publisher: Focus Home Interactive
Genre: Horror RPG
From French developer Cyanide Studios (Styx), Call of Cthulhu faithfully captures the distinctly macabre atmosphere of its source material, Chaosium’s Lovecraftian tabletop game of the same name, which released in the early ‘80s. It’s a first-person detective game requiring sharp focus and a cerebral approach rather than quick reflexes, and while its inky, morbid aesthetic suggests heavy survival horror gameplay, the experience falls squarely in the psychological horror category, with your character’s sanity constantly threatening to unspool as you confront the main story’s cavalcade of horrors.
It’s 1924 and you play as Edward Pierce, a troubled, substance-abusing P.I. who travels to Darkwater Island near Boston...

Director, screenwriter, film critic and author Kiyoshi Kurosawa began his career, as did many Japanese helmers of his generation, in the world of soft-core pornography — called “Pink Eiga” in Japan — before moving into straight-to-video productions consisting mostly of gangster flicks. In 1989, his career took a major leap when he made Sweet Home, his first outing in the horror genre, with which he still is most associated. Sweet Home was made into a video game, overseen by Kurosawa, and inspired the Resident Evil games, which went on to become a major Hollywood film franchise. His varied career would...

Katie Holmes is thinking good thoughts as she uses her gift to impart the wisdom of The Secret.
Katie Holmes is set to headline a feature film adaptation of hit 2006 book The Secret. Rhonda Byrne didn’t just write a self-help book series with her works. She created the law of attraction, which breathed new life into the New Age spiritual movement. The Secret spawned the follow-ups The Power in 2009, The Magic in 2010, and Hero in 2013. Byrne aims to bring joy to the world by helping people control the universe with their minds, using the teachings of Madame Blavatsky and Norman Vincent Peale and a little bit of quantum physics.

Eat your heart out, moviegoers. Everyone loves a good love story whether they admit it or not, and the 21st century has brought us more than a few couples worth rooting for: Clementine and Joel, Ennis and Jack, Joaquin and his computer. Often these unions are unconventional or hidden in the guise of something more high-concept — straightforward romances are so 20th century — but at the end of the day, we all want to see a happy ending for our smitten lovers.
Our list goes all over the map, from the mainstream maestro Nancy Meyers to international masters like Wong Kar-Wai. Some were blockbuster hits (“Twilight,” “The Proposal”); others have hardly been seen stateside at all (Lee Chang-dong’s 2002 “Oasis”). However, all of them illustrate some essential element of love, from falling to longing and all the sticky bits in between.

Before Resident Evil, there was Sweet Home. This is how a half-forgotten film and game spawned a video game genre...
This article originally appeared at Den of Geek UK.
Ring, Audition, Dark Water, Onibaba, House, Kuroneko... Ask most film fans to name a prominent Japanese horror, and one of those titles would probably come up. Ask most video game fanatics to name a Japanese horror game, and they'd probably reply with Resident Evil, Silent Hill, or, if they're feeling a bit retro, Splatterhouse or Castlevania.
There's one name that almost certainly won't come up in conversations about either category: Sweet Home. Yet this 1989 horror, and the video game of the same name released with it, inadvertently helped define an entire genre - and even spawn the Resident Evil franchise, which is still going 20 years later.
The Sweet Home movie is a curious genre mishmash with an impressive pedigree.

The grosses from two new $20-million-plus openers – “The Magnificent Seven” (Sony) and “Storks” (Warner Bros.) – delivering $35 million and just under $22 million respectively, might appear to be strong numbers. It’s the first time we’ve seen this level of gross since the second August weekend. And if the movies hold well and get strong international results, both could nudge into positive territory.
But a closer look is less upbeat, due to the total gross count as well as the disappointing showing of “Storks.” While remake “The Magnificent Seven” hit its marks, they are also less impressive on close examination.
The Top Ten

$21,805,000 in 3,922 theaters; PTA: $5,560; Cumulative: $21,805,000

Reaching back over a half century, “The Beatles: Eight Days a Week – The Touring Years” thrived with a contemporary mix of theaters and Hulu home viewing availability to become a major grossing event this weekend. The Ron Howard concert doc led an otherwise bleak set of new openers as audiences wait for top titles from festivals to reach theaters.
Included among the openers are two films from directors of Best Picture winners that got little attention: “Mr. Church” from Bruce Beresford (“Driving Miss Daisy”) and “Finding Altamira” from Hugh Hudson (“Chariots of Fire”). Fortunes take different paths. Ron Howard directed “Eight Days a Week,” while Clint Eastwood and Oliver Stone are nabbing attention with “Sully” at #1 and “Snowden” farther back in the pack, respectively.

Jeff Tweedy’s appearance on @Midnight is tonight and it turns out he was clever and delicately amusing about music based on this clip from Pitchfork. The Wilco frontman played a hashtag game called #OneWordOffSongs, and came up with the likes of “Ob La Di Al Qaeda” and “Sweet Home Williamsburg.” Nice burn there, Tweedy.

Tweedy wasn’t quite as blue as his fellow competitors, David Koechner and Jen Kirkman, the latter of whom dropped “Smells Like Teen Scrotum.” Kirkman also paid tribute to Wilco with “I Am Trying To Break Your Fart,” but, to be quite honest, we’re disappointed no one came up with “Heavy Metal Bummer.” Missed opportunity, folks.

This Past Weekend:
Tom Hanks and Clint Eastwood’s real-life drama about airline pilot Sully (Warner Bros.) far surpassed all expectations, making nearly $10 million more than my prediction with an opening weekend of $35 million in 3,525 theaters, also making it one of the biggest openings for a movie opening the weekend after Labor Day. The Screen Gems thriller When the Bough Breaks disappointed compared to some of their similar releases, taking second place with around where we predicted with around $14 million. The lower profile animated film The Wild Life (Summit/Lionsgate) did end up in fifth place behind Don’t Breathe and Suicide Squad, but with a measly $3.3 million in 2,493 theaters. For the majority of the population, hitting the gym is something done out of necessity, rather than joy. Though most enjoy the workout and the way they feel later, getting motivated is the biggest challenge.
When you’re dressed in style, however, that dreaded feeling of hitting the gym often diminishes. The best styles to shop for are those the celebrities are wearing, and right now, that means bright colors and bold patterns.
Here are some celebrity shoe sightings to help inspire your next pair of gym shoes:
Reese Witherspoon: Asics
Reese has been spotted wearing a colorful pair of Asics during her morning workout routine. On one occasion, the Oscar winner’s shoes featured gray canvas with neon orange laces and hot pink soles. Shirley MacLaine and Jessica Lange are in a movie together. It's called Wild Oats and it was directed by Andy Tennant of Fools Rush In and Sweet Home Alabama fame. You can see why this news is vexing. We should be thrilled about seeing MacLaine and Lange together (in a comedy no less!) but it might not be a great addition to this growing "Old dames having a ball!" genre that's become a staple of late.
The film, which follows the two Oscar winning actresses "newly rich" (given a banking error in one's husband's insurance policy), "newly single" (see above), and "forever young" (they're timeless, these glittering movie stars) looks to be a tad more Hello My Name is Doris than I'll See You In My Dreams, with a whiff of The Exotic Marigold Hotel. Oh, and did I mention it co-stars Demi Moore?
