For me, this place is one big grave.
With the continuous 100 year anniversaries that will span the next four years, one would expect some epic films on the many facets of The Great War, World War I, the War to End All Wars. Mostly, this has found itself on cable television with documentaries like The World Wars (2014) that controversially suggested there might be a through-line from World War I causing in some respect its sequel, World War II. Russell Crowe took this opportunity to make his directorial debut with The Water Diviner (2015), set from the perspective of Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (Anzac) at and after the Battle of Gallipoli in 1915. If its brethren, which are almost certainly forthcoming, stay at or above the quality of The Water Diviner, then we may well learn a few things about war and the people it leaves behind. The final guild/industry group to declare nominees did so this afternoon as the Motion Picture Sound Editors (Mpse) spoke up with a roll call of players for the 62nd Golden Reel Awards. On the film side of things, "Birdman" and "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes" had the best showing with three nominations each. I've been wondering if the latter could slide into Oscar play this year, but it's hard to gauge here, as "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" had a nice Mpse showing, too. In the effects/foley category, "Fury" is featured as well, also a strong possibility to pop up. All other expected players ("American Sniper," "Guardians of the Galaxy," "Unbroken," etc.) are featured. We'll see how the sound branch shakes it all out tomorrow but I'm a little more confused by where they'll end up going than usual, I must say. Check out...

Hollywood’s sound pros nominated Birdman and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes for three awards apiece as the Motion Picture Sound Editors unveiled nods for its 62nd Mpse Golden Reel Awards, honoring the best feature film, television, animation and computer entertainment work of the year.

This year’s nominations reflect that change, spanning an amazing diversity of mediums and genres, all executed at the highest level of creativity. The first round of 2014 Emmy Awards were handed out at the Creative Arts Emmys ceremony on Saturday (August 16) night at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles. The ceremony, which precedes the Monday, August 25 Primetime Emmy Awards telecast, offered signs of hope for a number of drama and comedy hopefuls. Netflix's "Orange Is The New Black," for example, won Emmys for editing, series casting and for Uzo Aduba, who is considered a guest actress for the purposes of these awards. No other comedy series was able to build any other momentum going into next week's show, with "The Big Bang Bang Theory," "Nurse Jackie," "How I Met Your Mother" and "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" grabbing isolated tech prizes and Jimmy Fallon winning the Guest Actor in a Comedy Series award for the second time in three years for his "Saturday Night Live" hosting duties. The two guest acting awards on the drama side...

History's “The World Wars” begins with German soldiers in a trench, pulling gas masks over their faces. A skinny private with a bushy mustache finds that his mask won't seal because his whiskers are too thick. As soon as the gas clears, he takes out a knife to cut his mustache into a compact rectangle. The little-known account of how Adolf Hitler got his strange mustache is only one of the surprising stories told in the series, which is Emmy-nominated for Outstanding Writing for Nonfiction, Outstanding Sound Editing for Nonfiction Programming, and Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Series. Back in 1981, when Ann Druyan co-wrote "Cosmos" with her husband Carl Sagan, the revolutionary science series was nominated for five Emmys and won three – all in the tech races. Even though the program was one of the biggest TV blockbusters of the year -- one hailed by the New York Times as "a watershed moment for science-themed television programming" -- It lost the top Emmy, Best Informational Series, to "Meeting of Minds," which featured Steve Allen interviewing celebrities dressed up like Catherine the Great and Leonardo da Vinci. -Break- So now Druyan holds a giant Emmy I.O.U. as she returns to the race with the newly updated "Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey," which is at least guaranteed of a nomination. It just finished airing to bravura reviews, solid ratings and its competition, at least numerically speaking, is slight. Only 13 other programs compete for Best Documentary or Nonfiction Series, including "The World Wars,...

One of the greatest pleasures of the last Mission: Impossible film was the addition of several excellent secondary characters for Tom Cruise’s Ethan Hunt to play against. This makes it very encouraging to hear that many of the same leads will be returning for Mission: Impossible 5. Simon Pegg has already confirmed his return alongside Cruise, and now we can add Jeremy Renner to the cast members who are unofficially on board for the film.
While speaking with Yahoo (via /Film), Renner more or less confirmed his return to the franchise. After being asked whether he’d be interested in a part in True Detective, Renner reminded Yahoo that he has a number of franchises he’s already working for. Alongside The Avengers and the next Bourne sequel, Renner included Mission: Impossible 5 as reasons why he’s unlikely to do True Detective:

History is making another addition to its original programming with an order for a new miniseries, Sons of Liberty. Hot off the continued success of Vikings, and the critical acclaim of other miniseries efforts (like The Bible and Hatfields & McCoys), the network now aims at what looks like a pretty interesting take on the lives of the biggest names of the American Revolution.
It seems as though we’re going for a “no really, they were just actual people,” approach to things, apparently trying to show that these were real men, with real lives and real problems, who threw themselves into something, probably far beyond their expectations. That could be a story worth telling, and there are some great cast members involved. Some audiences may have to be convinced that Ryan Eggold can get them to like him after he so recently got them to hate him on The Blacklist,...
