A far-right Italian politician has called for an episode of the children’s TV series Peppa Pig to be banned in the country.
The episode, entitled “Families”, was broadcast in the UK on Tuesday (6 September). It is noteworthy for introducing the characters of two co-parenting lesbian polar bears.
Federico Mollicone, a member of the right-wing Italian political party Brothers of Italy, who are predicted to win the general election this month, said broadcasting the episode in Italy would be “unacceptable”.
“Once again the politically correct has struck, at the expense of our children. Can’t children just be children?” he told La Stampa (as reported by The Guardian).
“We ask Rai, which buys the rights to the Peppa Pig series in Italy with a fee from all Italians, not to broadcast the episode in question on any channel or web platform.”
It is not yet known when the episode will be broadcast in Italy.

Penny Polar Bear is very excited to share about her parents. For the first time in its nearly two-decade long run, Peppa Pig has included a same-sex couple. The moment comes during the episode entitled "Families," which aired on Britain's Channel 5 on Sept. 6. The short scene happens when Peppa's classmate, Penny Polar Bear, discusses her family during the school day. "I'm Penny Polar Bear," she says, as she draws a photo of her two mothers in dresses. "I live with my mommy and my other mommy. One mommy is a doctor and one mommy cooks spaghetti. I love spaghetti." The inclusive storyline has been a long time coming: In 2019, a petition called...

Jean-Paul Rappeneau: "The idea here was that there would be autobiographical elements even if the story was completely imaginary.” Photo: Unifrance
After a hiatus of more than 10 years, veteran French director Jean-Paul Rappeneau has returned to film-making with Belles Familles / Families, which received its UK premiere at the Edinburgh International Film Festival. In the period of his absence from the screen he worked on the development of a contemporary spy film, Affaires Etrangères, which eventually fell through. Following a period of introspection Rappeneau, 84, was persuaded to return to work by the idea of a film which enabled him to return to his roots in Auxerre in Burgundy where he lived with his parents for the first 18 years of his life, before moving to Paris to continue his studies and eventually move in to the film world. The 40th edition of the Toronto International Film Festival now has something of a slate. Festival toppers Cameron Bailey and Piers Handling presided over a press conference Tuesday morning where more than 34 films were announced including the world premieres of "The Martian," "The Family Fang" and "Demolition." It's an intriguing initial lineup for the venerable Canadian institution and something of a steadying the ship after losing some major debuts to Venice, Telluride and the New York Film Festival over the past few years. Well, maybe. The most impressive world premieres include the aforementioned "Demolition" with Jake Gyllenhaal (officially the best opening night film in recent memory), "The Family Fang" with Nicole Kidman, "Legend" with Tom Hardy, "Trumbo" with Bryan Cranston, "The Martian" with Matt Damon and Lance Armstrong doc "The Program" with Ben Foster and Michael Moore's latest documentary, "Where to Invade Next." Notable films that will have premiered...

With the world’s most prestigious film festival just around the corner, cineastes have been lasciviously salivating about what’s going to show up at Cannes, with wish lists appearing almost immediately after Berlin (a fest that had one of their most impressive line-ups ever) announced their awards. The remainder of the 2015 fest circuit looks to be a plentiful, diverse porridge, with many of the world’s most renowned auteurs’ sporting brand new titles. While many prognosticators will be sharing the same lists, more or less, hopes are incredibly high for a handful of sure bets, and a gaggle of hopefuls. The main competition always seems easier to postulate, though Thierry Fremaux always throws a few curves, (After the Battle in 2012, The Hunt in 2013 or last year’s Timbuktu, which won the Cesar for Best Picture recently, are a couple ready examples of under-the-radar titles).
Italy seems primed for saturation at the fest.
