Pretty good, but not a favorite

Warning: Spoilers
After the third season ended on a high note, I was expecting a lot from the fourth. "Stab in the Dark"- the premiere of the season- is fortunately a solid "Death in Paradise", but there are aspects keeping it from great.

Let's start with good, shall we?

. The production values are great as usual. The direction is smooth with some atmospheric shots and the music fits the scenery. The acting's mostly enjoyable too. Don Gilet gives a solid performance and so does Natalie Gumede.

. The murder mystery is intriguing with many clever twists and turns. Most of the humor works. Especially liked the scene in which Camille and Goodman watch a horror flick.

But.....

. The solution, even though satisfying, is not the best the show has got to offer. I saw the twist( Andre was guilty after all) coming a mile away, because of the very obvious clue: " The man, who wasn't there" poem.

. Not all of the jokes work. Even though Kris Marshall is more comfortable in the role, his clumsiness is not as funny as Ben Miller's.

. There are also moments, where feels as if the characters were lucky and happened to be in the right place at the right time. Especially how the beach locker was found felt convenient.

Overall, solid, but not great episode.

Decent mystery.

Warning: Spoilers
This was a decent mystery, but not a particularly hard one to solve. This is mildly interesting with the ghost addition. Sances have a long history of being involved in mystery movies going back to Charlie Chan. The acting was good. The script was solid. The fictitious island of San Marie is always beautiful in the filming.

Spoilers ahead...

The one somewhat negative I have about this one, and it's not really that much of a negative, but it was pretty easy to see who the killer was. If you assume that everyone was holding hands as they said, and that no one gave someone a wooden hand or something ridiculous like that, it could've only been the one person that was outside, this person was the only one who wasn't really accounted for. They must've figured out a way to get in. Figuring was a little harder. I figured that out just before the end because it was the only real reason that he might've committed the murder, and you only had his word that his wife had left the island.

Island Spectre

Warning: Spoilers
The Festival of Fete Mouri, a Legacy of Slavery, a Seance for a 140+year old murder victim, and a local Murder, provided D.I.Poole with an island tablea to get his critical faculties around.

Series 4 has newly promoted police sergeant Fidel Best receiving a transfer to St. Lucia, the only indication of it being a phone conversation with police officer Dwayne Myers. This is badly handled as no mention had been made of its possibility, and the phone call is after the event.

Sergeant Best's replacement DS Florence Cassell arrives somewhat surreptitiously such that Dwayne tried to chat her up. However he felt the need to impress her with his police skills, when she announced her appointment by arriving at the police station in uniform. The police Commissioner mysteriously appearing at the police station to introduce her, has had act as stand in at the station which has proved to be a mixed blessing to all concerned.

Series Began To Change -for the worse
Littlelep13 March 2024
When the show was first available in the US, I looked forward to watching every episode. Of course, the jolt from the first lead change was disconcerting; but that was mild, because the replacement actor was so interesting.

The replacement of constables seemed to have been made with no thought as to the show's future; and a female was brought in to satisfy the demands for equality of numbers, even if the quality of the show would thereby suffer. Flor'ence, as she was called, recited her lines as though she were sounding out each syllable. She spoke in "broken English." Even when expressing a short thought, there were great breaks between the words. I wonder if she even had a screen test.

Then she became a major part of the show, and things quickly went from bad to worse. Aside from the grating, almost numbing, speech pattern, she was way too young to have the experience required for the role of sergeant. Her wardrobe for the first few episodes was an attempt to outdo her predecessor. Fortunately wiser heads nipped that in the bud.

I have watched through several series with Flor'ence because I enjoy the other characters and actors. Now that it is weitten in stone that she would be around for a long time - and even brought back after getting rid of her for a while, reluctantly I have to say farewell to Death. I hope that AI comes up with a way to cut out parts and characters so that the good parts can be watched without having to suffer through those bits that never should have been there in the first place.

Goodbye, Flor'ence, not going to miss you.

Guest starring Don Gilet
safenoe10 May 2024
Warning: Spoilers
This is a landmark episode because it guest stars Don Gilet as Andre Morgan. Only just recently, Gilet became the new DI Mervin Wilson, replacing Ralf Little who decided to move on.

I know there's been a bit of internet chatter from die-hard fans expressing discontent about Gilet becoming the new DI because Gilet had already played a different character in a past episode of Death in Paradise, being this episode. But funnily enough no-one expressed discontent when Ralf Little became the new DI even though he had played a different character in an earlier episode. Funny that init. You must wonder why there's that discontent about Gilet's casting init.

A pretty average series opener.
Sleepin_Dragon5 May 2021
It's the festival of Fete Mouri, and also a good time for a Seance, a ghostly figure has appeared, and people want answers, a new question though, who did the stab in the dark?

I can see that others enjoyed this series opener a bit more than I did, I think it was ok, I wasn't blown away by it, it has plus points, but there are a few negatives here too, I felt like this was the turning point, this was where some of the silliness came I go the show, we had more silly walks, more daft gags, it changed.

The basic story is pretty good, some of the acting is a little questionable at times, but overall it's a pleasing watch.

I liked the involvement of Selwyn, it was nice to see him have a meaty part, he wasn't just in it for the odd moment, he was a big part of this episode, it was also great to see the arrival of the wonderful Florence.

Watchable, 6/10.
