Traditionally, movie theater walkouts are usually associated with the horror genre, with infamous cases ranging from 1973’s The Exorcist (particularly during the crucifix masturbation scene) and even Lars Von Trier’s controversial serial killer memoir, The House That Jack Built.
That being said, there are exceptions to this rule, as some movies manage to terrorize audiences into leaving the theater regardless of genre. One memorable example of this is Nicolas Winding Refn’s 2013 revenge thriller Only God Forgives, a film so brutal and inaccessible that quite a few critics ended up treating it like a snuff film from hell back when it was first released. However, I’ve come to learn that horror fans have a knack for seeing beyond the blood and guts when judging the value of a story, and that’s why I’d like to make a case for Winding’s near-impenetrable experiment as an excellent horror-adjacent experience.

Legally, we cannot say that Josh Greenbaum’s “Strays” is meant for children. The film, despite its dog-centric storyline, is rated R, and frequently shows dogs humping and getting high, and probably will scare kids into thinking Will Forte’s demonic dog-hating Doug is the epitome of the inevitable horrors of adulthood.
Oddly, “Strays” will likely play best to an adolescent audience, because its humor is geared firmly toward the 13-year-old demographic. But that doesn’t mean it’s not enjoyable. To the contrary, “Strays” plays like a slow morphine drip into an oblivion in which Jamie Foxx’s voiceover acting as an adorably emotive Boston terrier named Bug is Oscar-worthy and Will Ferrell’s signature “who, me?” tone (perfected in “Elf”) is on full display as adorable mutt Reggie, a pet who unwittingly escapes a toxic relationship with aforementioned loser Doug. Just let it wash over you.

Producer Marianne Slot will continue her successful collaboration with Icelandic director Benedikt Erlingsson, following 2018 “Woman at War” with TV show “The Danish Woman” and upcoming feature film “Normal Men.”
“It’s a comedy, as you can imagine. Benedikt Erlingsson and a feminist producer – that’s a good combination,” she laughs, recalling their previous film about an environmental activist going rogue.
“’Woman at War’ was so joyful to make. It is still being shown and used as a reference, even by politicians in many different countries.”
Slot talks to Variety in Locarno, when she is picking up the Raimondo Rezzonico Award, given to industry figures who have played a major role in international production.
A French producer of Danish origin, she has collaborated with such directors as Lucrecia Martel, Lisandro Alonso and Sergei Loznitsa and has been co-producing Lars von Trier’s films since 1995’s “Breaking the Waves,” including “The House That Jack Built.

Lars von Trier founded the Dogme 95 movement alongside Thomas Vinterberg in the 1990s as a stripped-down, chaste approach to filmmaking — chaste, at least, on visual terms, as there is never anything chaste about a movie from the director of “Breaking the Waves,” “Antichrist,” and “The House That Jack Built.”
But in reality, von Trier only actually made one movie that adhered to Dogme 95’s criteria: including all shooting done on location, no props or sets brought in, diegetic sound and natural light only, and no credits for the filmmaker. That film was 1998’s Danish comedy-drama “The Idiots,” which upon release at the Cannes Film Festival provoked a firestorm of fiercely divided reactions for its fictionalized treatment of disability. Now, independent film distributor and streaming platform Mubi will re-release the film, restored and uncut, on June 16 theatrically at the Metrograph before it hits streaming on July 7. This story about Riley Keough and “Daisy Jones & the Six” first appeared in the Limited Series/Movies issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
She walked out into the blue stage lights like she’d been there before, a gossamer cape swirling in the wind as she warily eyed the guitar player standing a few feet away. The wariness gradually melted, replaced by a gamut of emotions: playfulness, then a passion that felt driven and a joy that almost seemed desperate. She was flirtatious and seductive when sharing a microphone, but when her partner left the stage she grabbed hold of a love song and turned it into an instrument of salvation.
This all happened during the concert scenes in the final episode of “Daisy Jones & the Six,” and it added up to one thing: In the title role, Riley Keough was pretty much a rock star. In one way,...

Though you’ll undoubtedly forget many times while you’re watching it, Prime Video’s music drama Daisy Jones & The Six is not based on a true story. At least, not really. Adapted from Taylor Jenkins Reid’s novel of the same name, this series about the titular band was inspired by the real life drama of classic ’70s rock group Fleetwood Mac.
While Fleetwood Mac is very much real (and great!), Daisy Jones & The Six is not real (though also great!). Still, that does not make the Behind the Music-esque drama they experience in these 10 episodes feel any less real. Contributing to that sense of verisimilitude is that the cast of Daisy Jones & The Six all fit their roles to a tee.

Lars von Trier is not melancholic about the state of his career after being diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease.
The “Melancholia” auteur opened up about his next projects since revisiting his cult favorite ’90s series “The Kingdom” with new season “The Kingdom Exodus.”
“I don’t have this idea that there’s a film I haven’t made yet that has to be made, right now,” von Trier told The New Yorker. “Also, because of this Parkinson’s I’ve picked up, I could live with not doing more films.”
The director added, “I’m very aware of the risk of doing what I call old-man films. These are the films that happen because you have a house that is too big, and you’re striving to repeat your success.”

This review originally ran September 2, 2022, in conjunction with the miniseries’ premiere at the Venice Film Festival.
Lars von Trier’s “The Kingdom Exodus” warrants comparison with David Lynch’s “Twin Peaks: The Return” for multiple parallels between the two: Both are peak prestige TV with indelible auteurist hallmarks, returning for their third seasons after a quarter-century hiatus. Both invoke the supernatural, concoct elaborate lore and boast captivated cult-like followings.
Though the Danish “Kingdom” is of course much lesser known, its first two seasons did make enough of a cultural impact through international theatrical runs to spawn a Stephen King–created American remake, “Kingdom Hospital.”
“Kingdom Exodus,” making its world premiere at the 2022 Venice Film Festival, gets much more meta. In the cold open, Karen (Bodil Jørgensen) watches von Trier’s signoff from the previous season’s finale on TV. Frustrated by the series’ loose ends, she heads to bed and...

If “Die Hard” is a Christmas movie, then “Antichrist” is a Halloween one.
Lars von Trier’s haunting two-hander about a couple unraveling over the grief of their dead child transforms those horrible circumstances into a gripping, hellish descent replete with jump scares and sudden flashes of blood. It was “elevated horror” before that horrendous term was in vogue, an art movie engineered to immerse its audience in utter dread.
It’s also a stunning example of what the genre does well in disguise. Von Trier funneled his own bout of depression into a shocking eruption of storytelling possibilities. Yes, the filmmaker thanks Andrei Tarkovsky in the credits, but “Antichrist” owes a debt to everyone from Jacques Tourneur to Stanley Kubrick for its gradual escalation of disquieting moments. It’s an eerie movie with payoff, frightening at all the right parts, and never in ways that feel unearned. In that regard,...

Lars von Trier is opening up about his Parkinson’s Disease diagnosis.
The “Antichrist” auteur was diagnosed four months prior to the 2022 Venice Film Festival, where the long-awaited Season 3 of “The Kingdom” premiered 28 years after the TV show first debuted.
During a press conference at the festival, the director admitted to having Parkinson’s symptoms for a long time prior to an official diagnosis.
“That means that I had not lived up to the way I wanted to be as a director, because I was ill,” Von Trier explained to Variety. “And that’s a pity for the [‘The Kingdom Exodus’] actors, but I think they did Ok.”
Von Trier confirmed that he will “take a little break” to focus on his health. “The Kingdom Exodus” is his first project since 2018’s “The House That Jack Built,” which debuted at Cannes.
“I will take a little break and find out what to do.

“The Kingdom” lives.
Twenty-eight years ago, Lars von Trier created the darkly comic miniseries known in Denmark as “Riget,” which follows the lives of the staff and patients at a hospital experiencing weird phenomena — corpse mutilation, a Greek chorus of dishwashers, ghosts in the halls, a doctor rapidly giving birth to a full-sized Udo Kier at the end of Series One.
Nothing unusual to see here in Lars von Trier world. The series, defined by its sepia color scheme and idiosyncratic “Twin Peaks”-like humor, ran for two seasons on Danish TV and on DVD in the U.S. But now, von Trier is back with “The Kingdom Exodus,” the third season hitting major festivals this fall including Venice and TIFF, before the five-part season premieres on Mubi. Watch the opening sequence, a cozy, nostalgic ode to the original but with some cast and obvious technological updates, below.

This poster, for Palme d'Or winning Triangle of Sadness, will turn some heads, although maybe in disgust. Projectile vomit is a way to grab attention. The highly-stylized 'liquid gold' look of it, which I am sure is intentional, is perhaps the most interesting element in The Einstein Couple's design. If you recall, that design house was also responsible for Lars Von Trier's Nymphomaniac 'O Face' character posters and The House That Jack Built 'tied up' character posters, as well as the 'golden 69' Klown Forever poster. Clearly, they are not strangers when pushing the boundaries in a film poster. Here the collaboration is with Danish design house Riddertoft, who have been featured in the past in this column with the colourful seafood platter of a...

Lars von Trier has been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, Zentropa announced. The production company, which von Trier co-founded in 1992 with producer Peter Aalbæk Jensen, said the director is in “good spirits and is being treated for his symptoms” while he continues to complete “The Kingdom Exodus,” the upcoming third and final season of his “The Kingdom” series.
Zentropa added that von Trier will take part in limited press events for the series when it’s released later this year. “The Kingdom Exodus” is world premiering at the Venice Film Festival. Mubi announced in July that it had secured distribution rights to the television season in North America, U.K. and Ireland, Latin America, Turkey and India.
“The Kingdom Exodus” closes the controversial director’s TV series, which first premiered in 1994 on Danish public broadcaster Dr. The series follows the staff and patients of a neurosurgical ward in a Copenhagen hospital.

Matt Dillon might have been awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award at Locarno on Thursday, but he still has “stuff to do.” And he wants you to know that.
“The first thing I thought was: ‘Oh wow, that’s really nice.’ And then: ‘I don’t feel like I am done just yet!’,” Dillon tells Variety ahead of the ceremony. But he has been around for a long time, he admits, having made his first film, Jonathan Kaplan’s “Over the Edge,” back in 1979.
“We were a bunch of actors playing juvenile delinquents, staying at a Holiday Inn in Colorado where McDonald’s slaughterhouses are based. One day we came across that old guy, a scenic painter, who worked on ‘The Wizard of Oz.’ It was like running into Mozart.”
Curious about everything, he was affected by seeing characters come to life and the idea of mirroring human nature right from the start.

Matt Dillon is at Locarno this week where he will receive the festival’s lifetime achievement award, a prestigious honour that he joked comes with a unique balance of positives and negatives.
“I’m too young,” he said. “But I do this because hopefully there’s some director here that’s gonna say ‘good job’ because I’m only as good as the directors I work with.”
This year, in tribute to Dillon, the festival will screen Gus Van Sant’s 1989 film Drugstore Cowboy, for which Dillon won his first of two Indie Spirit Awards as well as his directorial debut City Of Ghosts starring James Caan, Gérard Depardieu, and Stellan Skarsgård.
“I made that film on celluloid and now nobody makes movies on celluloid anymore. Everything is happening so fast,” he said.

Mubi has acquired the third and final instalment of Lars von Trier’s “The Kingdom” trilogy.
The distributor, producer and streamer has snapped up the medical horror for North America, U.K. and Ireland, Latin America, Turkey and India. Presented by TrustNordisk and produced by Zentropa Entertainments, “The Kingdom Exodus” closes the controversial director’s TV series, which first premiered in 1994 on Danish public broadcaster Dr.
Season 3 will world premiere out of competition at the Venice International Film Festival in September, and land exclusively on Mubi in the fall, with episodes dropping on a weekly episodic basis. Variety understands that Scandinavian streamer Viaplay, which was originally announced as the streaming home for Season 3 this fall, still retains streaming rights for the Nordics.

Danish editor Molly Malene Stensgaard, best known for her decades-long collaboration with Lars von Trier, won’t be returning for the third season of his cult series “The Kingdom,” she confirmed at Karlovy Vary Intl. Film Festival, where she also joined the Crystal Globe jury.

“We are pleased to experience this high level of interest in the series among buyers, who are evidently intrigued and excited about the series’ epic story, director and cast, which of course comes as no surprise,” said Susan Wendt, TrustNordisk’s managing director.

Mads Mikkelsen is set to star in a new period drama King’s Land (working title) which will reunite the prolific Danish actor with A Royal Affair director Nikolaj Arcel.
The €8M (8.5M) historic feature, which is produced by Zentropa and will be shopped internationally by TrustNordisk, is penned by Arcel with Anders Thomas (Riders Of Justice) and is based on the 2020 Danish bestelling book The Captain And Ann Barbara.
It’s set in the mid-1700s, when Danish King Fredirik V declared that the wild heath of Jutland should be tamed, cultivated and colonized so that civilization could spread and new taxes be generated for the royal house. However, no one dared to follow his decree for the heath meant certain death and was considered a place haunted by ravenous wolves, highwaymen and brutal and unforgiving nature. By 1755, lone solder Ludvig Kahlen rold into the heath in a stubborn pursuit of a lifelong dream,...

When Alexander Skarsgård enjoys collaborating with a fellow artist, he’ll sure stay loyal to them.
After winning an Emmy for playing Nicole Kidman’s emotionally and physically abusive husband in “Big Little Lies,” Skarsgård suggested Kidman play his mother in Robert Eggers’ Viking epic “The Northman,” now in theaters. And Skarsgård is even looking to explore a “brother-sister road trip comedy” with his Oscar-winning friend Kidman in pursuit of a “lighter” project together.
Skarsgård’s faith in filmmakers has been a cornerstone of his decades-spanning career, from going “full method” as a gasoline-swigging model in Ben Stiller’s 2001 comedy “Zoolander” to blindly signing on for Lars von Trier’s critically acclaimed “Melancholia” a decade later.
“I actually worked with Lars for literally three seconds on the eve of the millennium,” Skarsgård told Entertainment Weekly while reflecting on his career-making roles. “He was shooting a crazy project in Copenhagen live over New Year’s Eve.
