If you’re looking for family-friendly programming, you might assume Disney+ is your best choice. But according to the Parents Television and Media Council, families might want to look elsewhere for a safe harbor. The group looked across the streaming landscape to catalog which platforms offered the most TV-g or TV-pg original series.
Interestingly, Apple TV+ was rated the best service for family programming. It offers the largest number of TV-g-rated original programs. Twenty-six out of 139 programs (19%) were rated for general audiences. Only 6% were rated PG. Half (50%) of all original content on AppleTV+ is rated TV-ma.
7-Day Free Trial $6.99 / month apple.com
The worst platform for family-friendly content is Prime Video. Less than 3% of original content is rated TV-g or TV-pg. Prime Video’s content spend has been seemingly erratic, with major funding going to Thursday Night Football, and effects-heavy epics like “The Wheel of Time” or “Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.

Five more, all TeamTO original series, are airing around the globe.

In December 2019, Hasbro, home to G.I. Joe, Transformers and Dungeons & Dragons brands, closed a 3.8 billion deal for Entertainment One, a producer with a 6,500 title library and popular cartoons like Peppa Pig and Pj Masks.
The toymaker soon regretted the move, and this past May — when Hasbro was fending off a proxy battle from activist investor Alta Fox, which tried to get it to spin off its games division — called the timing on the studio buy “unfortunate,” indicating it overspent.
Now Hasbro is unloading eOne, disclosing Nov. 17 it hired bankers to explore a sale of the studio but keep IP like Peppa Pig. That’s a nod to investors who have urged the company to sell part of all of eOne to reinvest in fewer, more profitable properties, and to do so with outside partners to reduce costs and risk. Wall Street analysts applauded the move.

Do frogs have ears? Why do birds sing? Do animals have nursery rhymes? How do dead leaves vanish in the winters? Such questions have been amusing children for generations. Adults sometimes have the answers to such questions, but these innocent questions asked by kids surely stop us in our tracks from time to time and make us ponder.
“Elinor Wonders Why” answers some of these questions and introduces kids to the many other ingenuities of nature.
This animated series with anthropomorphic characters is the perfect companion for your kids as they try to make sense of the world. Following the huge success of the Japanese originated “Pokémon” series in the ’90s, we began to see various studios creating shows around creatures with special abilities. We saw “Monster Rancher,” “Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends,” “Lilo & Stitch,” and now “Abby Hatcher.”
The show “Abby Hatcher” is a Canadian computer-animated series about the eponymous character and her best friends — the Fuzzlies, some furry, zany creatures with unique special abilities — who live with Abby at her family’s hotel. The Fuzzlies often get themselves into trouble leaving Abby Hatcher and her favorite Fuzzly-friend, Bozzly, to fix their messes.
The TV show premiered in the United States on Nickelodeon on January 1, 2019. It premiered on TVOKids in Canada on February 11, 2019, and Channel 5’s Milkshake! block in the United Kingdom on Mar. 2, 2020.
“Abby Hatcher” is created by Rob Hoegee and produced by Guru Studio and Spin Master Entertainment, the producers of the popular “Paw Patrol” series.

After almost three absurdly long years, “Stranger Things” Season 4 is just around the corner. A tentpole series for Netflix — at a whopping production cost of reportedly 30 million per episode — the fan-favorite sci-fi show that launched its young adult cast, led by Millie Bobby Brown and Finn Wolfhard, into superstardom will be dropping new episodes May 27.
And, according to the Emmy-winning series’ executive producer Shawn Levy, it’s going to be “harrowing,” “cinematic” and “epic.” He told TheWrap in a recent interview, “This is so much more story and runtime than ever before, not by a little. By a lot.”
The last month of spring will also see the return of reality series titles like “The Circle” — a social media-driven competition series where players catfish, befriend and flirt with each other with the aim of winning a grand cash prize — and “Bling Empire” — which centers on a group of uber-wealthy Asian American friends in Beverly Hills.

As the undisputed king of streaming (for now at least), Netflix has enjoyed the presence of some major blockbusters. Now, with its list of new releases for May 2022, Netflix is bringing back one of its biggest ever hits.
Stranger Things season 4 “volume one” is set to premiere on May 27. It’s been a long wait for new episodes of this ’80s-tinged sci-fi/horror series and based on the trailers, the wait will have been well worth it. In this go-around, the kids of Hawkins (now high schoolers) will have to contend with the Upside Down once again to go along with the horrors of the Creel House.
While Stranger Things is the biggest Netflix original this month, it’s far from the only one. Mike Myers’ latest series The Pentaverate premieres on May 5 (fittingly: 5/5). Meanwhile The Lincoln Lawyer is set to arrive on May 13 followed by Love, Death & Robots Volume...

Disney Emea hosted its annual Studio Focus at this year’s Annecy Animation Festival, lamentably pre-recorded for the second edition in a row, where the company announced a pair of new African series, the sci-fi anthology series “Kizazi Moto: Generation of Fire” led by “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” co-director Peter Ramsey, and a musical kids show titled “Kiff” from South Africa.
“This year’s fest is about celebrating African animation,” said Orion Ross, VP of original programming and animation for Disney Emea. “We would like to start with how Disney is embracing the vast talent from this continent.”
Each of the shorts in “Kizazi Moto” was created to answer one question: “What does African future look like from an African perspective?”
When discussing his involvement, Ramsey recalled a visit to the Cape Town Animation Festival where he was “blown away, reinvigorated by the people, work, the industry. There was the...

U.S. investment firm Narrative Capital has acquired Sony Pictures Television’s entire U.K. channels portfolio in a major deal, Variety can reveal.
The pact covers Sony’s seven free-to-air channels, including Sony Movies, Sony Movies Action, Sony Movies Classic, Sony Channel, Pop, Tiny Pop and Pop Max, as well as the brands’ various digital assets.
The Sony-labeled channels will be rebranded, with a new look unveiled on May 25, and all brands will sit under the Narrative Entertainment banner. Hasbro-owned Entertainment One is letting go of 10% of its film and TV staff, Variety has confirmed.
According to a memo from eOne’s head of film and TV, Steve Bertram, the layoffs come amid a move to “evolve the focus and structure of our organization around the world” and comes in response to the “significant disruption the traditional studio model was experiencing as the technology giants invested heavily in their platforms and the creation of original content,” which has been accelerated by the pandemic.
Recent years have seen the cementing of heavily vertically integrated entertainment companies, from Disney to AT&T-owned WarnerMedia to Comcast-owned NBCUniversal, which have all launched streaming services.
Entertainment One, which was acquired by Hasbro in an all-cash $3.8 billion deal, shuttered its German theatrical distribution operation last fall and in 2019 halted direct theatrical distribution in Australia and New Zealand. Since being acquired by Hasbro, eOne...

Hasbro beat Wall Street analysts expectations, posting fourth-quarter revenue of $1.72 billion, up 4% from the year-earlier quarter.
Adjusting for items, earnings reached $1.27 a share, ahead of analysts’ consensus expectation for $1.14.
Gaming as a category posted a 27% rise in revenue to $561.2 million as the company continued to cope with the effects of the coronavirus. While the pandemic has decimated retail sales, it has also spurred a rise in stay-at-home activities like game playing and streaming, both areas of strength for Hasbro. Its stable of gaming brands includes Magic: The Gathering and Monopoly. An expanded line of games and toys related to eOne franchises Peppa Pig and Pj Masks is due out later in 2021.
Results reflect pro forma comparisons with 2019 given the acquisition of eOne, which closed at the end of 2019. Moving forward, quarterly comparisons will be apples-to-apples.
As a segment, eOne saw revenue drop 21% in 2020 to $956.5, which Hasbro blamed on production shutdowns and other Covid-19 issues.

Hollywood’s demand for streaming content is putting kids media creators and producers squarely at the adults table.
The world of kids TV has long been thought to be a peaceful one, a place where “Blue’s Clues,” “The Baby-Sitters’ Club,” “Phineas and Ferb” and “Rugrats” are left alone to ramble and play. As more consumers move to streaming-video services, however, kids properties are taking on new importance — and many major entertainment outlets, both traditional and upstart, are gearing for battle. “You can see that streamers are snapping up popular intellectual property and that studios are competing heavily for talent,” says Olivier Dumont, president of family brands for eOne, the large Hasbro-owned production company behind such kids series as “Peppa Pig” and “Pj Masks.”
Chris Nee won acclaim for herself and Walt Disney when she created “Doc McStuffins,” an animated series about a 6-year-old who fixes dolls and toys and in the process,...

As multiple production companies lay off crew, French animation studio TeamTO has announced two new hires, both central figures in the huge explosion of French animation over the last two decades, with Clélia Santi being appointed as head of production, and Judith Bruneau to the newly-created position of line producer and talent scout, TeamTO announced Tuesday, April 21.
The hires come as TeamTO production continues unabated on multiple series, even amid the Covid-19 crisis, as animation consolidates as one sector that may under exceptional circumstances meet some or all of the sanitary challenges posed by coronavirus.
Starting off as an OnEntertainment production manager on “The Little Prince” and head of production on “Peter Pan,” then working as production manager on Luc Besson’s TV series spinoff “Arthur and the Minimoys,” then at Xilam on its first first 3D project, “Oggy Oggy,” Santi will oversee day-to-day activities on TeamTO’s current development/production slate.

Peter Micelli, who has spent the last two years as Entertainment One’s chief strategy officer of television, film and digital, is stepping down from his role at the British-Canadian content company, according to an internal memo that went out to staff Monday, Variety has learned.
At eOne, Micelli oversaw the company’s TV and digital content operations, where he was tasked with leading TV strategy and seeking out partnership and potential acquisitive opportunities for eOne. Prior to his time at eOne, Micelli spent over two decades at CAA as a TV agent.
Micelli joined eOne shortly after Mark Gordon became the company’s chief content officer. His exit comes less than a year after Gordon moved on from his position as eOne’s president and chief content officer and transitioned to a producing deal with the company. Gordon and eOne were said to be mutually unhappy together, prompting Gordon’s exit.

“Sharp Objects” and “Run” producer-distributor Entertainment One is reassuring partners of its commitment to drama following its acquisition by toy giant Hasbro.
EOne has always cultivated a strong set of procedurals, such as ABC’s Nathan Fillion-starrer “The Rookie” and Fox’s Stephen Dorff-led “Deputy,” but has also gained traction with cable propositions such as HBO’s “Sharp Objects” and the forthcoming thriller “Run” from “Fleabag” creator Phoebe Waller-Bridge, who both produces and stars.
However, following Hasbro’s shock $3.8 billion all-cash deal for the business – an acquisition that made sense from a kids’ content perspective given eOne’s lucrative “Peppa Pig” franchise and “Pj Masks” property – alarm bells rang around eOne’s future prospects in scripted drama.
Now that the deal has closed, senior eOne TV execs – who last week hosted global buyers in London for the firm’s annual U.K. Screenings event – are assuaging fears about the company’s post-Hasbro pipeline,...

Britain’s competition watchdog will investigate Hasbro’s $4 billion takeover of Entertainment One.
The Competition and Markets Authority said Thursday that it would examine whether the intended acquisition of eOne would result in a “substantial lessening of competition” under U.K. rules. The Cma was deeply involved in scrutinizing the sale of Sky, which was ultimately bought by Comcast at an unusual auction.
Toy giant Hasbro announced a surprise $4 billion all-cash deal for film and TV studio eOne in August. As well as movie and drama production and distribution, eOne owns the smash-hit kids’ property Peppa Pig.
When it announced the deal, Hasbro said that “the acquisition of eOne adds beloved story-led global family brands that deliver strong operating returns to Hasbro’s portfolio and provides a pipeline of new brand creation driven by family-oriented storytelling, which will now include Hasbro’s IP.”
The Cma set out a timetable for its investigation.

Hasbro’s $4 billion acquisition of eOne in August instantly put the Canadian toy giant in the league of major entertainment and content companies thanks to eOne’s arsenal of IP assets in music, television and film. But does the self-described “family brands” business that’s home to The Game of Life and My Little Pony align with a property named Death Row Records?
That’s what music industry insiders are wondering as the business takes stock of this new player, particularly if those very properties are up for sale.
Death Row, co-founded by Dr. Dre and Suge Knight in 1991 and known for blazing the trail for the “gangsta rap” of the 1990s, is home to music by Dre (including the influential 1992 album “The Chronic”), Tupac Shakur and Snoop Dogg, among others. Hasbro CEO Brian Goldner has a plan in place that he hopes will fully capitalize on the toy company’s recent acquisition of production studio Entertainment One, while boosting revenue and already existing Hasbro brands. Speaking at Goldman Sach’s annual Communacopia Conference on Wednesday, Goldner set out to address Hasbro’s recent $4 billion acquisition of “Peppa Pig” and “Pj Masks” creator eOne. It was already clear, as Hasbro has waded into Hollywood with content production, that the company’s acquisition centered around the valuable brands. But Goldner got more granular on Wednesday, laying out what Hasbro’s plans might be moving forward. Also Read: Toymaker Hasbro Buys eOne for $4 Billion in Cash “In eOne, we have the family brands business, which has a number of notable pieces of entertainment, and the most toy-etic of which are ‘Peppa Pig’ and ‘Pj Masks,'” Goldner said during the conference, which was live streamed.

Hasbro is turning the tables on Monopoly in a campaign to support young women entrepreneurs — but reactions have been a mixed bag since the toy company announced the new game Tuesday morning.

Entertainment One’s revised film strategy led to a 9% drop in group revenues, although the business was boosted by its Peppa Pig-fronted family division.

This comes after eOne brought together its film and television units, which the company said would bring in up to £15M of annualized cost savings by the end of its next financial year. Healthy increases in TV and family revenues and profit at independent studio eOne helped offset sharp reverses in its film business in the last financial year, which closed at the end of March, the company said Tuesday.
“It has been a strong year for the group, as we combined our film and television operations into the film, television and digital division for FY19, completed the acquisition of the remaining stake in The Mark Gordon Co. and continued the reshaping of our film business,” eOne CEO Darren Throop said.
Overall revenues were 4% lower at £1.04 billion. Ebidta profit of £177.3 million was spurred by the strong performance of the TV and family divisions.
In the family content business, “Peppa Pig” continues to be a powerhouse, and another animated series, “Pj Masks,” is gaining traction. There are eight new projects in the works, eOne said, reporting family revenue of £138.6 million, a 56% increase year-on-year, and Ebidta profit of £82.3 million,...
