Guillermo del Toro’s affable smile can win anyone’s heart. Not to mention, his movies as well. The Mexican filmmaker has given us a sleuth of cult classics over the years. Though not one of the most dominating personalities out there, del Toro has quietly sneaked in quite a number of remarkable works over the span of his illustrious career. With three Academy Awards and just as many Golden Globes, there can be no doubt about his impact on the industry. But things could have turned out better if he had chosen another movie over Hellboy 2.

At the turn of the millennium, Guillermo del Toro was not the icon he is today. A director with a couple of films to his name, he was still looking to find his feet in the industry.

4K is about to get a lot darker, as director Guillermo del Toro teased over the weekend that four more of his films will be hitting the format within “the next year or so”. They are: his 1993 debut Cronos, 1997 follow-up Mimic, 2002’s Hellboy, and 2015’s Crimson Peak, which is one of del Toro’s most visually striking features.
In an X post from yesterday, Guillermo del Toro wrote, “4 new 4K transfers coming up: Crimson Peak, then Cronos, Blade II and finally Mimic all in the next year or so. I am done with the color timing of 3 out of the 4.” Note that these releases will not be coming out simultaneously or in chronological order.

Guillermo del Toro looked a little surprised on Monday’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live” when the host whipped out a photo of the Oscar winner with Steven Spielberg and J.J. Abrams on a shopping spree at a hobby shop – to buy model kits.
“I know this store because I used to drive by it all the time; this is a hobby shop in Burbank, right? And if you look through, you can see this is Guillermo with Steven Spielberg and J.J. Abrams,” Kimmel said of the images in the photos, then asking del Toro what the trio was buying.
“We get together now and then on Sundays; I paint model kits,” del Toro said. “I paint mostly cadavers and monsters; J.J. paints like things like the ‘Psycho’ house. Steven has his ‘Hamilton’ combo.”

He’s won Best Picture and Best Director, but now Guillermo del Toro can add the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature Film to his trophy case. “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio” beat out a very competitive field to take the Oscar and became just the second stop-motion animated film to take the honor after “Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit” in 2005. It is also the first Animated Feature Film Academy Award for Netflix after five previous nominees.

Harrison Ford might as well be sitting next to Tom Cruise next to the dictionary definition of "movie star." Outside of a handful of appearances as either himself or characters he first made famous in the film, Ford hasn't otherwise appeared on the small screen since "Star Wars: A New Hope" hit theaters. Well, not counting the countless syndicated TV broadcasts of his films that all of our dads watched on Sunday afternoons, of course. But since originating the role of Han Solo, Ford's domain has been the silver screen, which is why it was so surprising to see the now 80-year-old actor sign on to not one, but two separate TV series this year.
Ford's first foray into starring on television came with the Apple TV+ series "Shrinking" from "Scrubs" and "Ted Lasso" creator, Bill Lawrence. Given his reputation of cinematic exclusivity, the creative team never imagined they'd actually...

“Avatar: The Way of Water” came out on top at the Visual Effects Society’s 2023 Ves Awards, held Wednesday evening at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills.
The James Cameron epic set a Ves record this year with 14 nominations in nine different categories, and it set a record for wins by coming out on top in every category in which it was nominated. By contrast, the original 2009 “Avatar” received 10 nominations and won five awards. The previous record for wins by a film was set by “The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers” at the first Ves Awards in 2003, when it won eight awards. (The show had fewer awards then than it does now.)

Syrian American actor and filmmaker Jay Abdo (pictured) and young Tanzanian filmmaker Martha Ngwada will also be honored at the event.

When audiences last saw a feature film from acclaimed director Guillermo Del Toro it was “The Shape of Water,” a surprising Oscars heavyweight that won Best Picture and scored Del Toro Best Director honors at the 2018 Academy Awards. So expectations for Del Toro’s follow-up, a fresh adaptation of William Lindsay Gresham’s 1946 noir novel “Nightmare Alley” (which was previously turned into a 1947 noir feature film), were sky-high heading into Wednesday night’s screenings in New York and Los Angeles. Based on early responses from journalists and pundits, Del Toro did not disappoint — though whether academy members will warm to the film’s cold-hearted story and characters is another conversation entirely.
“The movie itself lands as a rock-solid, potentially across-the-board player, bolstered by impeccable craft below the line and a superb ensemble in top form,” Vanity Fair awards writer David Canfield wrote. “It’s a darker movie than ‘Shape of Water,...

Five Madrid-based companies, led by leading Spanish production house Tornasol Films, producer of Oscar-winner “The Secret in Their Eyes,” are teaming to launch services consortium Centro Navarro para la Producción Cinematográfica in Navarre, Northern Spain.
Based out of the Sarrio industrial park in Berrioplano, a town near Pamplona, Cnpc will provide production services, develop R&d projects and launch industry training programs in a region of Spain that is consolidating as a film-tv hub bulwarked by tax incentives.
Since 2015, Navarre offers a competitive 35% tax credit for Spanish shoots and co-productions.
