The Star Trek franchise has several movies and TV shows running and in development. Yet Star Trek: Lower Decks has had a special place in the hearts of the fans for its family-centered characters and being an animated series specifically made for adult audiences. Starring several amazing actors, the series unfortunately would be discontinued after its season five.
Star Trek: Lower Decks
As the shocking news was made public, fans were visibly upset but no one seemed to be as upset as the Lower Decks’ star Jack Quaid. In a recent Instagram post, the actor addressed the series’ end and also hopes that the show will be continued by some other studio after Paramount discontinues it.

Paramount is making another effort to make Star Trek 4 happen, with The Flight Attendant writer Steve Yockey behind the script.
Eight years on from Star Trek: Beyond, Paramount and Bad Robot are still trying to get a sequel together that reunites the series’ cast, including Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto and Karl Urban
The name behind this latest attempt is screenwriter Steve Yockey, who’s best known for TV series The Flight Attendant – a comedy murder mystery starring Kaley Cuoco. Yockey also wrote episodes of Supernatural and the Scream TV spin-off series.
Nothing else is known about the project at present, though Variety reports that Paramount hopes to get the core cast first established in 2009’s Star Trek, which also includes Zoe Saldana and John Cho. The glaring exception will of course be Anton Yelchin, who tragically passed away in 2016.

It has been 8 years since the last Star Trek movie, Star Trek Beyond, graced the big screen. Ever since, while there have been several TV shows and more on the way, the futuristic space franchise has not returned to the big screen despite the announcement of a sequel before the release of the third movie.

Its loyal and huge fanbase has thus been eagerly waiting, hoping to see the cast of the rebooted saga once again. While negotiations with actors and writers have been broken several times before, the inclusion of Steve Yockey as the new screenwriter has created a significant buzz. And Paramount still hopes that the sequel to Beyond will be the last film of the rebooted movie series featuring its original cast.

While “Star Trek” has flourished on the small screen and within many of Paramount+’s series like “Picard,” Trekkies haven’t experienced a film in theaters since 2016’s “Star Trek Beyond.” But there seems to be some tentatively good news on the horizon regarding the long-in-development “Star Trek 4.” Variety reports that the studio has hired Steve Yockey to write the newest incarnation of the “Star Trek 4” script, which is being described as a final installment.

There's more "Star Trek" television right now that Trekkies know what to do with. Whether you prefer it when the franchise is philosophical yet whimsical in the manner of Gene Roddenberry's original ground-breaking series ("Strange New Worlds"), a mix of raunchy humor and emotionally mature sci-fi storytelling ("Lower Decks"), or embracing a "warm, flashy, 'heart dangling on the sleeve with such force that you might as well brace for an aerial spray' ethos" (as /Film's own Jacob Hall put it in his review of the "Discovery" season 5 premiere), there's something for "Trek" enthusiasts of ever shade right now -- again, on the small screen. Unfortunately, if you enjoy it when the property stretches its wings and takes flight in theaters, you've been plumb out of luck since 2016.

Steve Yockey, creator of the Max series “The Flight Attendant,” is joining Starfleet as the new screenwriter for “Star Trek 4.”
Story details remain under a powerful cloaking device, but Paramount Pictures and Bad Robot still intend the project to be the final chapter for the cast that rebooted the franchise in movie theaters with 2009’s “Star Trek,” including Chris Pine (as Capt. James T. Kirk), Zachary Quinto (as Cmdr. Spock), Zoe Saldaña (as Lt. Nyota Uhura), Karl Urban (as Dr. Leonard McCoy), John Cho (as Lt. It’s been eight years since the release of the last Star Trek movie, which, believe it or not, is actually the largest gap between movies since the franchise first hit the big screen in 1979. There have been several potential Star Trek movies in the works during those years, but they have either been scrapped or stuck in development hell. We still don’t know exactly what the future will bring, but Paramount apparently has “a plan” for the franchise’s return to theaters.

ScreenRant spoke with Roddenberry Entertainment COO Trevor Roth, who assured fans that there is a plan in the works. While I might be tempted to say that it feels like Paramount is just throwing things at the wall to see what sticks, I would love to see a proper Star Trek movie once again.

Madame Web filmmaker Sj Clarkson is both persistent and prolific. The British director has helmed at least 109 episodes of television from 2001 until now. She cut her teeth to the tune of 37 episodes on a British medical soap known as Doctors, but that experience eventually paved the way for the likes of Dexter, Orange Is the New Black and Succession. (Her first episode of Dexter ended with John Lithgow’s iconic line of, “Hello, Dexter Morgan.”)
In recent years, Clarkson’s efforts to mount projects on a massive scale have tested her patience, as her Naomi Watts-led Game of Thrones prequel pilot, Bloodmoon, didn’t go, nor did her version of Star Trek 4 in 2018. Nevertheless, Clarkson’s feature directorial debut, Madame Web, is now arriving in theaters on Feb. 14, and she never imagined that her first film would take place in a universe that’s related to Spider-Man.

The Star Trek franchise can’t seem to catch a break on the big screen. There have been numerous Star Trek movies in development since the release of Star Trek Beyond almost eight years ago, including one from Fargo creator Noah Hawley. The project was pretty far along before Paramount pulled the plug, and Hawley has revealed that the movie would have starred Cate Blanchett and Rami Malek. Hot damn.
Noah Hawley discussed the Star Trek project on a recent episode of Armchair Expert with Dax Shepard, speaking of his tales of “heartbreak” in Hollywood. “Yeah, I mean, I was going to make a Star Trek movie with Cate Blanchett and Rami Malek,” Hawley said. “Could have had that, America.“
It’s unlikely that Cate Blanchett and Rami Malek had officially signed on, but Hawley has previously said that they were in the middle of major casting when the plug was pulled.

“Star Trek” turnover is not particularly rare, and ever since 2016’s “Star Trek Beyond,” the last “Star Trek” movie released theatrically, Paramount has struggled to get a new film off the ground. There was an idea from Quentin Tarantino that “The Revenant” writer Mark L. Smith wrote that never got made, “WandaVision” director Matt Shakman was supposed to make a version of “Star Trek 4,” “Avatar: The Way of Water” writer Josh Friedman & Cameron Squires wrote a version, and “Fargo” showrunner/writer/director Noah Hawley wrote a version that never got made either (a new version is in the works too; potentially two).

Another new Star Trek film is in development – reportedly an origin story – while Star Trek 4 is apparently still said to be alive and well.
Only yesterday we learned from Jean-Luc Picard himself that a Picard movie is apparently in the works. According to Patrick Stewart, the esteemed actor who embodies Picard, the film would be a final outing for the beloved character who has most recently appeared in a multi-season TV show that has developed his post-Next Generation story.
Given that Paramount always seems to have several Star Trek projects cooking at the same time, it’s unsurprising to hear that there’s more on the way too. It’s been announced that Andor director Toby Haynes is on board to direct and Seth Grahame-Smith has written the script for a Trek film that will act as an origin story that will expand the ‘Kelvin timeline’ universe.

As reported in Deadline today, Paramount has officially announced that they are developing a new "Star Trek" feature film. It will be the first "Star Trek" movie since the release of "Star Trek Beyond" in 2016, but the fourteenth "Star Trek" film overall.
The new film will be directed by Toby Haynes, a prolific British television director who has helmed episodes of "M.I. High," "Doctor Who," and the British version of "Utopia." His most recent directing job was six episodes of the hit "Star Wars" series "Andor." Interestingly, he also directed the celebrated "Black Mirror" episode "USS Callister," which was a darkly humorous riff on "Star Trek" and science fiction fandom. He also directed the 2019 TV movie "Brexit: The Uncivil War" starring Benedict Cumberbatch. The new "Star Trek" film is slated to be written by Seth Grahame-Smith, the author of the books "Pride and Prejudice and Zombies" and "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter.

“Star Trek” is about to explore a whole new era of its timeline. A new film in the universe Gene Roddenberry created, to be produced by J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot for Paramount, and directed by “Andor” helmer Toby Haynes and written by “Pride and Prejudice and Zombies” scribe Seth Grahame-Smith, is arriving at impulse power, if not warp.
The film will be set decades before the events of the 2009 “Star Trek” film Abrams directed, which explored a parallel timeline to the main “Star Trek” canon viewers have known and loved to show how Kirk (Chris Pine) and Spock (Zachary Quinto) met for the first time. It’s unclear if it will actually be set in that timeline — known to Trekkies as the “Kelvin Timeline” — or in the main continuity. But apparently it will be an “origin” story, so it must be connected in some way to “Trek” storytelling that’s already known and loved.

A new “Star Trek” film is in the works at Paramount with “Andor’s” Toby Haynes on board to direct and Seth Grahame-Smith penning the script, Variety has confirmed.
While plot details are being kept under wraps, the upcoming feature will be an origin story that is set decades before 2009’s “Star Trek,” as well as an expansion of the “Star Trek” universe. J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot is producing.
Meanwhile, the fourth installment of the rebooted “Star Trek” film series remains in development, with the studio describing it as the “final chapter.” In the third film, 2016’s “Star Trek Beyond,” the crew of the USS Enterprise crash-lands on a mysterious world after being attacked by the lizard-like dictator Krall (Idris Elba).
A fourth “Star Trek” movie starring Chris Pine was first announced in July of 2016, with Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, John Cho and Simon Pegg expected to return.

The current Captain Kirk has no idea what state the next Star Trek film is in, and that’s surely not a good sign.
Paramount’s stalled Star Trek 4 project remains as a masterclass in franchise mismanagement, given that the seven years since the release of Star Trek: Beyond have been littered with creative changes, false starts and public relations gaffes.
All of the classic studio mistakes have been on display throughout the project’s tortured history: executives drawing up plans for multiple films (rather than focusing on the one squarely in front of them), keeping talent suspiciously in the dark (also to be found in the Lucasfilm Star Wars playbook as you can see from this story today) and miring the project in traction so filmmakers depart for fairer shores.

The status of a new “Star Trek” film has been in a somewhat nebulous state for years now. Sometimes, Paramount will announce the development of a new film. But then the cast with say they haven’t talked to anyone about that, and it’s not happening. Then a director will get hired, only to leave after several months. Then an actor will say that they don’t think it’ll ever be made, while there are reports of scripts being written.

Pet Sematary: Bloodlines (read our review) marks the directorial debut of Lindsey Anderson Beer, a much-in-demand screenwriter who’s served in the writer’s rooms of some of the biggest franchises out there. Notably, she’s worked closely with J. J. Abrams on breaking a story for the fourth Star Trek movie and was one of the writers involved with Quentin Tarantino when he flirted with joining the franchise. In a wide-ranging interview with THR, Beer gives a little insight into what it was like working with Tarantino, which she said made for one of the most fun experiences she ever had working in a writer’s room.
While Tarantino is known for being a solo writer, Beer says the auteur was very open to hearing everyone’s ideas for what his Trek movie could be.
“We got in there, and he started with, “So what are your guys’ ideas for a movie?...

“You really wanna head back out there, huh?” Although Captain Kirk doesn’t answer this question posed by his friend Dr. McCoy at the end of Star Trek Beyond, we all know his answer. Whatever differences between the fatherless Kirk of the Kelvin timeline, played by Chris Pine, and his Prime Universe counterpart played by William Shatner, the two Captains share a love of adventure that keeps them coming back to their beloved ship and searching for the unknown.
And yet, we’ve never had the chance to see what’s next for the Enterprise-a of the Kelvin Universe. According to Spock actor Zachary Quinto, we aren’t going to see that next adventure any time soon. Speaking to the crowd at Star Trek Las Vegas, Quinto summed the delay in the next movie with a simple, oft-repeated phrase. “It’s complicated,” he revealed (via TrekMovie). “The fact that anything...

We’ve talked about the loose definition of based on a true story but what happen when what the movie is based on may not even be entirely factual. This is can happen with movies like The Possession which was based on an internet article that someone fleshed out into a story when they thought the thing they bought was cool. Other times a movie can be merely inspired by an event even when they don’t credit that event in the film’s credits. Think A Nightmare On Elm Street. Nothing's a surefire bet in Hollywood until it is. Few took "Star Wars" seriously until it forever changed the movie landscape in 1977, ushering in our modern blockbuster era. Many were just as skeptical of the very concept of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, right up until "The Avengers" became the highest-grossing non-James Cameron movie ever at the time of its release in 2012. But when it did, you can bet your bottom dollar studios did everything in their power to replicate that success as quickly as possible -- and you can be just as well-assured that the outcome was often more regrettable than not.

So, what’s the latest on “Star Trek 4“? J.J. Abrams certainly sounds bullish on the film’s future. He told Esquire in their Chris Pine cover story that its script is in a good place, adding “I will say it’s the first time [since the 2009 film] that we have a story that feels as compelling as the first one.” But Variety reports that Pine doesn’t have a clue what’s going on with the potential sequel, and finds the whole situation “frustrating.”

Pedro Pascal had the best reaction to a Buffy the Vampire Slayer throwback picture that Sarah Michelle Gellar posted on Instagram this week.
During the season three premiere of his Disney Plus series The Mandalorian in Los Angeles, the 47-year-old actor spoke about the time he guest starred on Gellar’s show.
Speaking of the throwback picture, Pascal told an Access Hollywood reporter: “What I just found out – that I am very excited about, and I can’t wait to get my phone back so that I can look it up myself – is that Sarah Michelle Gellar remembers me.
“I want her to know that I remember every moment of shooting that episode, as brief as it was. She was such a kind scene partner, and we had the best time.”
During the interview, Pascal was shown a photograph of himself from the 1999 episode.
“This is Eddie, and the episode is ‘The Freshman.

What’s going on with Paramount’s “Star Trek” film franchise? Don’t ask Chris Pine, even though he’s one of its headlining stars. Pine has played Captain Kirk in three “Star Trek” movies, and he is painfully out of the loop when it comes to the long-delayed and long-overhauled fourth movie. Directors such as Quentin Tarantino and Noah Hawley developed “Star Trek 4” scripts that never got off the ground. “WandaVision” director Matt Shakman was the most recent filmmaker attached to “Star Trek 4,” but he left the project to shoot Marvel’s “Fantastic Four” reboot instead. Paramount announced last September it was removing “Star Trek 4” from its release calendar.
As part of Chris Pine’s new Esquire cover story, franchise producer J.J. Abrams said the “Star Trek 4″ script is in a good place. “I will say it’s the first time [since the original reboot] that we have a story...

It’s been seven years since the release of Star Trek Beyond, and in that time, we’ve seen the release of multiple Star Trek TV shows, including Discovery, Picard, Lower Decks, Prodigy, and Strange New Worlds… but no fourth movie. Paramount can’t seem to get Star Trek 4 off the ground, but when the project does finally launch, producer J.J. Abrams believes it will have quite the story to tell.
In Esquire‘s recent Chris Pine profile, J.J. Abrams offered a quick Star Trek 4 tease: “I will say it’s the first time [since the original reboot] that we have a story that feels as compelling as the first one.” The first Star Trek reboot was quite a lot of fun and still stands as the best-reviewed film of the franchise, according to Rotten Tomatoes. Chris Pine has finally addressed the viral video that appeared to show Harry Styles spitting on him at Venice Film Festival last year.
In the video, taken at the premiere of Don’t Worry Darling, Styles is seen walking over to his seat beside his co-star Pine. Fans speculated that Styles appeared to then spit in Pine’s lap before sitting down next to him – a moment that was affectionately branded “spitgate”.
After the incident, Pine’s representatives issued a statement about the rumour, saying: “This is a ridiculous story – a complete fabrication and the result of an odd online illusion that is clearly deceiving and allows for foolish speculation.”
Pine has now personally commented on the rumours for the first time, confirming to Esquire that “Harry did not spit on me”.

Chris Pine doesn’t think the “Star Trek” movie franchise is really prospering.
The star of “Star Trek Beyond” reflected on leading the prequel films as Captain James T. Kirk since 2009. Pine criticized the box office comparisons between the “Star Trek” IP and Marvel films, telling Esquire, “I’m not sure ‘Star Trek’ was ever built to do that kind of business. I always thought, ‘Why aren’t we just appealing to this really rabid fan group and making the movie for a good price and going on our merry way, instead of trying to compete with the Marvels of the world?'”
Pine continued, “After the last one came out and didn’t do the $1 billion that everybody wanted it to do, and then Anton [Yelchin, who played Chekov] passed away [in 2016], I don’t know, it just seemed…feels like it’s cursed.”

Chris Pine has shared his “frustration” at the lack of communication over the fourth Star Trek film.
The actor starred as Captain James Kirk in the three Star Trek reboot films in 2009, 2013 and 2016. A fourth film has been in development since 2015, with Pine’s return announced in 2022, but little further progress has been made.
In a new interview, Pine admitted that he wasn’t sure whether there would be another Star Trek film after 2016’s Star Trek Beyond, saying that the franchise “feels like it’s cursed”.
“I don’t know anything,” he told Esquire. “In Star Trek land, the actors are usually the last people to find out anything. I know costume designers that have read scripts before the actors.
“I would say it’s frustrating. It doesn’t really foster the greatest sense of partnership, but it’s how it’s always been.”
Pine continued: “I love the character.

Director Matt Shakman has, in his decades-long directing career, amassed quite the pop culture imprimatur. He began as a child actor, having appeared as a regular on the 1988 "Growing Pains" spin-off, "Just the Ten of Us." As a kid, he had guest spots on multiple ultra-popular shows, including "Diff'rent Strokes," "Night Court," and "The Facts of Life." He retired from acting to attend college, afterward beginning a career in TV directing. Throughout the '00s, he helmed multiple single episodes of just about every popular show on TV, from "Judging Amy" and "Boston Legal" to "Six Feet Under." He directed five episodes of "Psych" and five episodes of "House" before landing the plum gig of "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" in 2007. He was behind 43 episodes of that show.

Of all the actors to have appeared on "Star Trek," Jonathan Frakes might be the most prolific director. Throughout the franchise's history, at least since the days of "Star Trek: The Next Generation," actors have often stepped into the director's chair, helming multiple episodes. Frakes, however, managed to find a whole second career in directing, and has, to date, directed 25 episodes of Trek across its various iterations. Frakes also directed 10 episodes of "The Librarians," 13 episodes of "Leverage," and dozens of episodes from other shows. Frakes also broke into making feature films with "Star Trek: First Contact," and "Star Trek: Insurrection," as well as the brightly colored kid adventure films "Clockstoppers" and "Thunderbirds."
Having worked on both film and television, Frakes may be uniquely qualified to comment on which medium is most appropriate for "Star Trek." It might be worth mentioning that "Star Trek" has always functioned better on the small screen than the large.

No surprise here as Paramount has temporarily removed Star Trek from its release schedule. The news comes a month after director Matt Shakman exited the project. A search for a new director is underway.
The movie starring Chris Pine — scripted by the feature franchise’s first female writers, Lindsey Beer and Geneva Robertson-Dworet — had been set to open on Dec. 22 next year.
Star Trek originally was dated for June 9, 2023, before shifting December 22, 2023.
The recent trilogy of Star Trek movies produced by J.J. Abrams (he directed two of them) and starring young versions of the legacy TV characters have grossed 1.96 billion.
