Given how often one of the lead characters in the rollicking Belfast-set comedy Kneecap flashes his bare bottom, adorned with the words “Brits Out,” “cheeky” is truly the best way to describe this film premiering in Sundance’s Next strand.
The gleefully irreverent feature offers an origin story for the real-life band of the title, whose members also play themselves with admirable naturalism. It’s a meet-cute success story about two working-class drug dealers — Naoise Ó Cairealláin, known onstage as Móglaí Bap, and Liam Óg Ó Hannaidh (aka Mo Chara) — who team up with a schoolteacher (JJ Ó Dochartaigh, or DJ Provaí, the one with the arse) to form a hip-hop group who rap mostly in Irish Gaelic. Writer-director Rich Peppiatt’s (doc One Rogue Reporter) exuberant sophomore feature blends truth with print-the-legend fiction. In its own sweet way, Kneecap is just like nearly every other music-focused rags-to-riches movie ever made.

Lady Gaga joined U2 during their performance at the Sphere in Las Vegas last night for a rendition of “Shallow,” her song from A Star Is Born. The singer took the stage with the band clad in a leather jacket and sunglasses for a surprisingly energetic version of the emotive song where she shared vocals with Bono.

An orphaned Irish teenager spars with her scheming uncle in this insightful reworking of Sheridan Le Fanu’s novel
Here is a tightly laced, elegantly cut gothic period drama that easily slips through the cracks as the barrage of upmarket cinema vying for awards begins. The 19th-century source material, Sheridan Le Fanu’s novel Uncle Silas, isn’t super well-known outside university literature departments, and the lead actors aren’t especially famous names either – although gravelly-voiced David Wilmot, here playing the heavy, has built a career making indelible impressions with supporting roles on film and TV (Station Eleven). Likewise, if you caught limited TV series Ridley Road then the talents of Agnes O’Casey will already be a known quantity. But in a way, the freshness of face and/or versatility of both O’Casey and Wilmot, along with the rest of the cast, are what makes this feel like a discovery.

This four-part Netflix series isn’t the first time that Josephine Hart’s 1991 novel Damage has been adapted for screen. In 1992, celebrated French director Louis Malle made a feature film of Hart’s book that welcomed Jeremy Irons, Juliette Binoche, Miranda Richardson, Peter Stomare and Rupert Graves to this exploration of erotic obsession. The film earned Richardson a Best Actress nomination among many others at that year’s Academy Awards.
This serialised version was created by playwright Morgan Lloyd Malcolm with writer Benji Walters, and directed by Ordinary Love, Good Vibrations and Cherry Bomb‘s Lisa Barrow D’Sa and Glenn Leyburn, updates the action to the modern day and remoulds the characters somewhat. Richard Armitage plays successful surgeon Will, husband to Ingrid and father to Jay and Sally, while Charlie Muphy’s character Anna Barton is expanded to explore her response to the fallout of the story’s scandalous central affair.

It's easy for Liam Neeson's post-"Taken" movies to start blurring together if you're not paying close attention. Are we talking about the film where he plays a vengeful snowplow driver or the one where he plays a heroic ice road trucker? Does he play a hitman dealing with dementia or a potential terrorist with amnesia? Is he fighting bad guys on a plane or on a train? Has a member of his family been kidnapped or has he himself been kidnapped (or both)? Is he playing a Jesuit priest who has renounced his religion after trying to spread Catholic Christianity across Edo-era Japan, no longer willing to allow others to suffer so that he might cling to his personal faith?
Okay, you probably won't mix that one up with any other Neeson movies, but the point still stands.
In all seriousness, it's hard to fault Neeson too much...

Richard Armitage is set to star in “Damage,” a new Netflix series from Gaumont U.K. and Moonage.
Armitage (“The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies”) will play William, a politician who embarks on a passionate affair with his soon-to-be daughter in law, Anna (played by “Peaky Blinders” star Charlie Murphy.)
Anna is already engaged to William’s son Martyn, played by “Miss Marvel’s” Rish Shah. She fights to keep both relationships alive – one with Martyn and one with William – but it is inevitable that the truth will emerge and someone is going to get hurt.
In the meantime, William finds himself drawn into an obsessive spiral, unbeknown to his wife Ingrid (played by “Obi Wan Kenobi’s” Indira Varma.)
Pippa Bennett-Warner (“Gangs of London”) is also set to join the cast as Peggy.
“Damage” is based on Josephine Hart’s 1990s political novella about “erotic obsession and forbidden desire.

Round up the usual suspects. The insular Academy music branch is known for leaning into their regulars (see 12-time nominee Diane Warren’s shortlisted song for Sundance indie “Four Good Days”) as well as unexpected surprises (Amazon’s shortlisted Idina Menzel song “Dream Girl” from “Cinderella”). Needless to say, Menzel has been to the Oscars before, belting out “Let It Go,” Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez’ Oscar winner from “Frozen.”
The Academy music branch also tends to fall for global pop stars who might turn up to perform at the Oscar kudocast. Inevitably, music stars scored shortlist slots, including for the second year in a row H.E.R., who sings “Automatic Woman” in Halle Berry’s directorial debut “Bruised” (Netflix). Another Netflix contender is Ariana Grande and Kid Cudi’s “Just Look Up” from “Don’t Look Up.” Ireland’s two-time song nominees Bono and U2 wrote and performed “Your Song Saved...

After teasing it on social media earlier in the week, U2 has released the full-length “Your Song Saved My Life,” an original song the group and recorded for “Sing 2,” an animated musical set to hit theaters Dec. 22.
Although the new song doesn’t represent any vast jump in genre, U2 fans will recognize it as a departure from the group’s usual style, starting off with a gospel-pop style piano and elevating into orchestral accompaniment before wrapping up with a falsetto chorus and not many guitars in sight.
Several U2 catalog songs, including “Joshua Tree” favorites and “Stuck in a Moment You Can’t Get Out Of,” also appear in the movie, which has Bono taking on a lead voice role for the first time, envisioned as a lion. Flying high after two Academy Awards for “The Father,” which it produced and sold, London-based Embankment has unveiled a first look photo of “Sex Education” star Emma Mackey in “Emily,” as well as robust early pre-sales on the feature, an Emily Brontë origin story.
Mackey was nominated on Wednesday for a BAFTA TV Award for Netflix’s “Sex Education” in the category of female performance in a comedy program.
News of first major territories sold, including much of Europe, comes as “Emily” begins principal photography. The film marks the writer-director feature debut of actor Frances O’Connor, a double Golden Globe nominee for her performances in “Madame Bovary” and “Missing.”

Only scripts written under the WGA guidelines or those of several international partners are allowed to vie for the Writers Guild of America Awards. This limited eligibility means that these precursor prizes, which reveals its roster for the 2021 WGA Awards on February 16, are not the most reliable barometer of the eventual Oscar nominees and winners. Indeed, in the past 11 years only 73 of the Writers Guild of America Awards nominees have numbered among the 110 screenplays that reaped Academy Awards bids.

The envelope, please. No, not the one inviting your aging bones to join the AARP. The one announcing the nominees for the upcoming Movies for Grownups Awards. This year, Minari, Nomadland, One Night in Miami, The Trial of the Chicago 7 and The United States vs. Billie Holiday are contending for the Best Picture/Best Movie for Grownups category. The awards have also added categories in television/streaming for the first time.
For two decades, AARP’s Movies for Grownups program has championed what it calls “movies for grownups, by grownups.” It claims to advocate for the 50-plus audience, fighting industry ageism and encouraging films that resonate with older viewers. AARP’s Movies for Grownups continues its commitment to celebrate quality content by expanding to honor standout TV programs in new categories.

What is it with the recent wave of anti-love stories? Marriage Story showed how a genuine relationship can be suffocated by the byzantine legal system, and Ordinary Love saw its central couple nearly undone by a cancer diagnosis. As morose as the films could sometimes be, they were both excellent in their own ways — demonstrating […]

The number of films available to Oscar voters in a screening room devoted to the Best Picture category hit the 200 mark on Wednesday, which means that $2.5 million has entered the Academy coffers from films paying $12,500 each to be represented in the screening room.
The members-only Academy Screening Room hit the milestone with the addition of more than a dozen movies this week, including Fisher Stevens’ “Palmer,” Lee Daniels’ “The United States vs. Billie Holiday,” John Lee Hancock’s “The Little Things,” the Russo brothers’ “Cherry,” Josh Trank’s “Capone,” the documentary “Coup 53,” the Studio Ghibli animated film “Earwig and the Witch,” the international films “Funny Boy” and “Bacarau” (neither eligible in the Oscars’ Best International Feature Film category) and some off-the-wall selections, including “Snake White – Love Endures” and “Soorarai Pottru.”
Other late additions to the screening room have included “Minari,” “Promising Young Woman,” “The White Tiger” and “Cherry,” which were not added until January.

When word seeped out this week that Netflix was considering adding Malcolm & Marie to its list of Oscar-contending movies for this year, shudders went through the competition from other distributors. Can one studio/distributor/streamer — whatever — possibly grab all five Best Actress Oscar slots? That would certainly be a first in Academy history in that category, or just about any other. It is a question worth asking right now.
Recent Emmy winner Zendaya (HBO’s Euphoria) co-stars with John David Washington in the two-hander, Malcolm & Marie, which is now set for a February 5 release on Netflix. That makes it eligible for the Oscars as this Covid-affected season has been extended with eligibility going through February 28 for the delayed Oscar show, now set for April 25, 2021 with nominations announced March 15. As Deadline originally exclusively reported September 13, it was a $30 million deal for Netflix in a bidding war for the top...

After a one-year break and the subsequent reorganisation of the body, this year’s edition saw the triumph of Lance Daly's Black '47 and Lisa Barros D'Sa's Ordinary Day. The traditional awards ceremony of the Irish Film and Television Academy was broadcast last night on Virgin Media One, hosted by Deirdre O’Kane. After a one-year break and the subsequent reorganisation process that brought the body to approve a five-year strategic development plan for the period 2020-2024, the prestigious event was finally back and ready to award, as a one-time exception, the best productions and talents of the entire 2019/2020 season. In detail, this edition saw the triumph of Lisa Barros D’Sa romantic drama Ordinary Love, crowned as the best film of 2020, along with Lance Daly’s period drama Black ’47, named best title of 2019. At the delayed 2020 induction ceremony for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, bands Depeche Mode, Doobie Brothers, Nine Inch Nails and T-Rex are finally getting their due. Each of them waited a while to get in, so which other snubbed bands should be strongly considered for 2021? Vote in our new poll below which features 12 artists.
At the previous 2019 ceremony, voters also saw that long-overlooked bands The Cure, Def Leppard, Roxy Music and The Zombies finally got their due. With five to eight artists going in each year, bands seem to be the most populous. Male artists also have a fairly easy time getting in, but critics often complain about the lack of female artists being inducted. Our most recent poll results about female artists cried out for Melissa Etheridge to make the cut in 2021. Watch out soon when we have a poll about male artists.

Ordinary Love, a romantic dramedy starring Liam Neeson alongside Lesley Manville, can be viewed on Hulu as of today, August 3rd. The film, produced by Bleecker Street, features not only Neeson’s most recent performance (though that will soon change once Made in Italy releases later this month), but also one of his most heartwarming. For these reasons and more, it’s definitely worth checking out.
Neeson’s career spans several decades and dozens upon dozens of movies. During that time, the actor has cemented himself as one of the most recognizable faces of contemporary cinema. His roles are as versatile as his acting skills, too, as while most know him as the guy who often plays badasses, he can also portray a simple family man without expert combat skills.

Following on from a July where they added a large number of horror titles to their catalogue, Hulu have now made available even more great outings from the genre. As with all the major streaming players, keeping subscribers happy with new content during this Covid-19 year has been crucial, especially given the new competitors that have sprung up in recent months, further splintering film rights. Hulu are usually pretty reliable in terms of diversity, though, and have added some particularly strong horror titles for August.
Among the highlights for new movies is the original 1988 Child’s Play, which introduced the murderous Chucky to the world in a film that arguably remains the high-point of the franchise. A reasonably realistic setting, a convincing child performance and some excellent effects work make Child’s Play a classic of the period and more than worth a rewatch. And with the Chucky series on the way,...

Yes, it is a bit early to speculate on the state of the 2021 Oscar race, especially given that every day that the coronavirus pandemic rages on puts a damper on any indoor movie theaters actually screening films for academy voters as well as regular ticket buyers. Plus the opening dates of some potential blockbusters like Christopher Nolan‘s time-travel film “Tenet” keep shifting according to the surging cases of Covid-19.
It is likely more films may end up as VOD titles or on streaming platforms for now. But with the announcement that the eligibility period will be extended through February so that productions that had to shut down for safety’s sake can be completed, there is still a chance those featuring big name stars will be at least able to be seen before the 93rd Academy Awards ceremony will be held on April 25, 2021.

We’re only just over halfway through July, but let’s hop ahead a couple of weeks into the future and take a look at what’s coming to Hulu in August. Next month will see the streaming service add an enormous list of movies and TV shows, with numerous classics amongst them, and everyone from horror to action to romance fans and even family audiences should be pleased with what’s coming.
The first day of the month, for example, brings the opening installments in two major horror franchises that kicked off in the late 80s – 1987’s Hellraiser and 1988’s Child’s Play. Sticking with the 80s, August 1st likewise sees 1986’s Top Gun added to the library, too. Not to mention 1981’s My Bloody Valentine.

If you were concerned about there being a content drought in August due to the coronavirus pandemic shutting down Hollywood, you were…absolutely right in those concerns.
For its new releases in August 2020, Hulu is following Apple, Disney, and even Peacock’s lead in taking things nice and slowly. The vast majority of the notable offerings here are of the library variety. Hulu adds classic movies like Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, Rain Man, and Top Gun on August 1. Those go along with the very much still-holds-up Casino Royale on August 31.
Hulu also has room for some interesting recent indie movies like Ordinary Love (Aug. 3) and Peanut Butter Falcon (Aug. 6). But when it comes to Hulu original content there’s not much going on. The unheralded Find Me in Paris debuts its third season on August 21. That is followed by original comedy The Binge on August 28. And that’s about it!

The eight actors listed below share a few things in common beyond their profession. They star in films that might be part of the Oscar conversation this year. And while each have been up for a Best Actor trophy previously — some more than once — they haven’t yet claimed an Oscar as leads. While the ongoing pandemic is upending life for everyone, including the entertainment industry and theater chains, it is hard to know exactly how the need for social distancing will affect screenings. Streaming sites and VOD will be more important than ever since the academy has ruled such films eligible for consideration, provided they had originally intended a theatrical rollout for those films.
But if “Hamilton” can draw thousands of viewers to Disney+, it’s likely these popular actors will have the power to attract eyeballs as well to a smaller screen. Presuming their films actually come out this year as scheduled,...

Best known around these parts for his roles in Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World, Cloud Atlas, and Dunkirk, James D’Arcy has also appeared in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Homeland, Broadchurch, and more. The actor will now be stepping behind the camera for his first directorial effort, Made in Italy.
Starring Liam Neeson, the drama tells the story of a father who must return to Italy with his son in order to sell a house that belonged to his late wife. While there, Neeson’s character deals with a colorful variety of characters which include Lindsay Duncan as a tough realtor. Meanwhile, his son falls into a budding romance with a local chef. For an actor who has enjoyed a renaissance in action filmmaking these last few years, it looks like Neeson is charting a bit of a different path with this drama and Ordinary Love from earlier this year.
