Two Africans, an Afghan, and a Syrian walk onto a remote island in Scotland. The punch line potential is infinite. Writer/director Ben Sharrock knows it too as he places them all in the same cramped apartment with a “Refugees Welcome” banner outside so they can argue about the merits of Ross and Rachel’s “break” courtesy of a burned Friends box set left behind by whomever lived there last. Add an eccentric cultural awareness course led by a duo in Helga (Sidse Babett Knudsen) and Boris (Kenneth Collard) who teach sexual harassment by having the former smack the latter’s intentionally handsy dance partner in the face and you’ll find yourself mimicking the class of foreigners watching in stunned silence thanks to the dryly humorous mix of confusion and horror.
Sharrock’s Limbo is very British in this way despite its multi-cultural cast of strangers in a very strange land.

No man is an island in Limbo, a glumly comic drama about a group of misfit refugees stranded in surreal exile in a remote Scottish backwater town. Building on the promise of his festival prize-winning debut feature Pikadero (2016), Scottish writer-director Ben Sharrock displays a winning flair for small observational detail and minor-key mirth in his warm-hearted second feature, whose deadpan ironic tone invites comparison to Aki Kaurismaki or Jim Jarmusch.

Spartan and wind-whipped and 25 miles from the already far-flung mainland of northern Scotland, the Uist Islands would be a disorienting place for most outsiders to find themselves stranded for an indefinite amount of time — and that’s without the additional, time-stretching uncertainty of a pending application for political asylum. For the Syrian protagonist of “Limbo,” a refugee stationed in a bleak safe house on the island while he awaits the mercy of the British government, it amounts to a kind of physical and spiritual quarantine that could resonate with a broader swath of viewers than it would have done six months ago. Which isn’t to say Scottish director Ben Sharrock’s thoughtful, gentle-natured sophomore film, which dramatizes the refugees’ plight through deadpan comedy rather than issue-movie hand-wringing, lacks ample empathy of its own.

Ben Sharrock announces himself as a master of atmospheric film-making with this stirring drama about a Syrian migrant
What a thoroughly wonderful sophomore feature from the British director Ben Sharrock – witty, poignant, marvellously composed and shot, moving and even weirdly gripping. Despite an elegant deadpan style established from the outset, Sharrock soon gets you to invest in the characters and care deeply about what happens to them. Limbo is about refugees and asylum seekers in Britain, and it’s a bracingly internationalist and non-parochial piece of work: film-making with a bold view on the world but also as gentle and intimate as a much-loved sitcom. It reminded me at various moments of Aki Kaurismäki or Elia Suleiman or Bill Forsyth, with a distinct touch of Bruce Robinson’s Withnail And I.

Among an impressive list of U.K. projects to debut at the Toronto Intl. Film Festival, two of the most high-profile are TV dramas — underscoring how British scripted series are now rivalling the country’s proud tradition for indie cinema in terms of creativity, and — some might argue — even eclipsing it.
Psychological thriller “The Third Day” stars Jude Law and Naomi Harris, and is set on a mysterious British Island. With backing by HBO and Sky, the inventive six-parter is created by Felix Barrett, the founder and artistic director of renowned theater group Punchdrunk, and Dennis Kelly, the writer of “Matilda the Musical” and cult TV show “Utopia.”
Meanwhile, BBC-backed “A Suitable Boy” sees “Monsoon Wedding” and “The Namesake” director Mira Nair make her television debut with the adaptation of Vikram Seth’s classic novel set in 1950s India. Adapted by Andrew Davies, the doyen of period TV drama, “A Suitable Boy...

August’s home media releases are off to a quiet start this week, as we only have a handful of titles heading to Blu-ray and DVD on Tuesday. One of this writer’s favorite films of 2020, Swallow, is coming home on both formats, and Joko Anwar’s remake of Satan’s Slaves (another great film!) is also hitting Blu and DVD this week as well. Scream Factory is set to unleash The Soul Collector on Tuesday, and if you happened to miss it on the network, HBO is releasing the first season of His Dark Materials on various formats, too.
Other Blu-ray and DVD titles arriving on August 4th include Coma, Gates of Darkness, Limbo, and The Haunting of Molly Bannister.
Coma: Steelbook Edition

Hello, dear readers! We’ve made it through another month, which means we have a new batch of horror, sci-fi and even a handful “genre adjacent” films heading to VOD and digital platforms in the coming weeks. Some of the highlights for August’s digital debuts include La Llorona on Shudder (August 6th), Sputnik (August 14th), Open 24 Hours (August 18th), Random Acts of Violence (hits Shudder on August 20th), The Pale Door (August 21st), and Centigrade and Rogue both arrive on August 28th.
It’s also worth noting that one of my favorite documentaries of 2020, You Cannot Kill David Arquette, is slated for release sometime in late August, but an official date hasn’t been revealed just yet.

The feature directorial debuts of Halle Berry and Regina King will be part of the lineup at the 2020 Toronto International Film Festival, organizers announced on Thursday.
Berry’s film, “Bruised,” features the actor and director as a mixed martial arts star fighting for custody of her young daughter. King’s “One Night in Miami” is based on a play that fictionalizes a night in 1964 in which boxer Cassius Clay (soon to be Muhammad Ali), singer Sam Cooke, football player Jim Brown and activist Malcolm X met in a Florida hotel room.
Nearly half of the 50 selected features, 23, have a female director or co-director.
Other films among the 50 titles announced by TIFF include Chloé Zhao’s “Nomadland,” a drama from “The Rider” director that stars Frances McDormand; Francis Lee’s “Ammonite,” a female romance set in 1840s England and starring Saoirse Ronan, Kate Winslet and Fiona Shaw; Reinaldo Marcus Green’s “Good Joe Bell,...

CAA has signed award-winning filmmaker Ben Sharrock.
Sharrock is a budding indie director whose second feature, “Limbo,” was named by critics as the hidden gem of this year’s coronavirus-hit Cannes Film Festival selection.
This is U.K.-based Sharrock’s first U.S. agency, though he continues to be represented abroad by Harriet Pennington Leigh of Lark.
Sharrock wrote and directed “Limbo,” also serving as co-producer with his partner Irune Gurtubai. The film takes an absurdist look at the modern refugee experience through the eyes of four Middle Eastern refugees relocated to a remote island in Scotland.
The project has earned praise for avoiding themes of sorrow and upheaval while still confronting uncomfortable truths about the experience, and how it shapes identity. The film was brought to the Cannes virtual market and remains for sale from Protagonist Pictures.

As well as leading the company’s international sales, she was also instrumental in bringing in projects such as Mariano Cohn’s and Gaston Duprat’s “Official Competition,” starring Penelope Cruz, Antonio Banderas, and Oscar Martinez, one of the top-selling titles at this year’s Berlin’s European Film Market.
Saal relocated to London to join Protagonist as head of worldwide sales in 2014. Prior to that, she was senior VP of international sales at Paris-based Studiocanal, and international sales and development exec at Paris-based Kinology. She started her career at New York-based Focus Features.

A bit earlier today, in lieu of the actual fest, the Cannes Film Festival announced what their Official Selections would have been. Of course, these movies won’t actually be playing at Cannes, but they will be showing at other festivals around the world over the next handful of months. It would have been an interesting crop of titles, all lumped together in the south of France, and this afternoon, we’re going to take a look at a few of them, as the lineup is being rolled out. Some of the highlights here seem to include Ammonite (starring Saoirse Ronan and Kate Winslet), Wes Anderson’s The French Dispatch, Pixar’s Soul, and a pair of new works from Steve McQueen (Lover’s Rock as well as Mangrove). There’s also films like Viggo Mortensen’s directorial debut Falling, which played at the Sundance Film Festival, plus much more.

Despite its cancellation due to the coronavirus, Cannes has revealed the 56 movies chosen for its Official Selection as a badge of honor for the movies and in a bid to boost their distribution credentials. Details about the makeup of the lineup, including a record number of women directors and debuts, were revealed yesterday.
The festival didn’t differentiate movies by section this year, instead announcing all 56 movies in one list, only demarcating some by thematic category.
Artistic director Thierry Frémaux had previously said that Spike Lee’s Netflix film Da 5 Bloods would have played Out of Competition. Lee was set to chair the jury. The movie would have marked Netflix’s return to the festival after a three year absence,...

The show is going on for the 2020 Cannes Film Festival, even though by now in a normal year we would have known which film would succeed Bong Joon Ho’s “Parasite” as the new Palme d’Or winner. The original 2020 festival was scheduled to run May 12-23 but was canceled in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic. Cannes is living on this year as festival president Pierre Lescure and general delegate Thierry Frémaux are announcing the 56 films that made the cut for the 2020 Official Selection. Selected films will be branded with an official Cannes 2020 label that they can take to additional festivals later this year and use when they open in theaters.
The Official Selection at Cannes usually includes the following sections: Competition, Un Certain Regard, Out of Competition, Special Screenings, and Midnight Screenings. The Palme d’Or contenders premiere in the Competition category. Last year’s Cannes Competition section...

Cannes Film Festival will not take place this year, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, but the official selection has still been unveiled. While no distinct sections were revealed, Thierry Frémaux and Pierre Lescure took the stage of an empty theater to share the 50-plus films that were accepted to screen at the festival. While those Cannes world premieres will not happen in person or digitally, these films will be able to show the prestigious laurels as they head to other festivals this fall and beyond–except Venice Film Festival, who have said they will not be part of their event.
“This Selection is here, and it’s a beautiful one,” Frémaux said. “Even though movie theatres have been shut for three months – for the first time since the invention of film screening by the Lumière Brothers on December 28, 1895 – this Selection reflects that cinema is more alive than ever. When “The Bachelor” franchise launched in 2002, the very first season aired in the aftermath of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
The original idea was to shoot the final rose ceremony in front of the Eiffel Tower, but due to safety precautions in the wake of 9/11, production was limited to domestic locations, so plans for the romantic Paris proposal were nixed.
Nearly two decades later, the ABC franchise is dealing with another unexpected tragedy: the coronavirus outbreak. And once again, the globe-trotting show will be forced to shoot domestically — and within the confines of a quarantined location.
While all plans are a work in progress and subject to change, given the uncertainty surrounding future government-mandated stay-at-home orders, Season 16 of “The Bachelorette” is tentatively aiming to head into production sometime this summer. If those production plans can move forward, the new season would likely air in the fall, Variety has learned.

Epic Games has announced a major new publishing program that will initially see them partner with major studios such as Remedy Entertainment, genDesign, and Playdead.
The publishing deal (which was announced via the Epic website alongside a corresponding video) is notable not only due to the quality of the developers in question (more on that a bit later) but because of the generous terms of this arrangement.
First off, all of these Epic partners will retain “retain 100% of all intellectual property and full creative control of their work.” That’s not always easy to come by in this business, and it’s caused studios like Remedy to suffer through long stretches where they did not entirely control the future of series they previously worked on (and even created) such as Alan Wake.
Second, these projects will be fully-funded by Epic Games Publishing, which means that Epic will “cover up to 100% of development costs,...

Fledgling distributor Aviron Pictures has been hit with a significant staff reduction less than a month after the removal of top executive WIlliam Sadleir, numerous insiders told Variety.
Almost half of a staff of 30 were dismissed last week, amid wide rumors that the company’s deep-pocketed financier Black Rock has defunded the outfit entirely, sources said. A full shuttering is expected, they said.
