Discovery (Wbd) Upfront presentation at Madison Square Garden, Chairman and CEO of U.S. Networks Kathleen Finch underscored the group’s focus on expanding its global franchises and developing new platform-agnostic shows that can drive linear ratings and engage audiences on Wbd’s streaming platform Max.
Emphasizing Wbd’s strength across the true crime, food, home, relationship, adult animation, and adventure genres, Finch announced that John Cena will host Discovery’s 36th annual Shark Week and that Food Network will create a baking competition inspired by Wbd’s Harry Potter.
“We are the most powerful creators of unscripted content across platforms and places. We draw the biggest collective audience in cable and provide an unparalleled way to reach consumers in a trusted environment. From Geena Davis and Jamie Lee Curtis, to blaxploitation royalty Pam Grier; Joe Dante and Roland Emmerich, to genre legend Peter Hyams topping the bill – 2024’s Forbidden Worlds Film Festival promises the biggest (and maddest) year yet for genre fans in the South West.
Firing into its third year of taking over arguably Bristol’s best cinema screen – the abandoned IMAX at Bristol Aquarium, Forbidden Worlds has never been one to cater to the masses. It’s a true one-screen wonder of a festival, promising the most unusual and sought-after of cinematic treats; big, mad, weird shit projected large and loud, for three straight days.
For example, while 2024’s edition promises an explosive opening night with a 30th anniversary screening of none other than Keanu Reeves action classic The Bus That Couldn’t Slow Down (otherwise known as Speed), look as far as the following day’s line-up and you’ll...

Three years before his career-defining role as Itto Ogami in the six Lone Wolf and Cub films, Wakayama Tomisaburô starred in a trio of films about doctor, bounty hunter, and sometimes shogun assassin Ichibei Shikoro. Where the Lone Wolf and Cub series leaned much harder into the strategies associated with the exploitation filmmaking movement that was booming in Japan during the early 1970s, the “Bounty Hunter” trilogy has both feet firmly planted in the 1960s, drawing influence from James Bond films and spaghetti westerns as well more violent contemporaneous samurai films such as Okamoto Kihachi’s Sword of Doom and Kill!
The influence of the 007 films on Killer’s Mission, from 1969, alone is evident right out of the gate, both in Yagi Masao’s score and our first glimpse of Ichibei preparing his gadgets, including a cane sword and a miniature crossbow, as he readies himself for his mission to prevent an enemy,...

While David Fincher’s The Killer starring Michael Fassbender as the tile character was an entertaining watch for fans, it was a notable step down from his prior works. Although it possesses Fincher’s impeccable filmmaking chops, instead of being a complex narrative, full of twists and turns, which fans have come to expect from him, The Killer was more like a straight arrow.
And American Psycho author Bret Easton Ellis was one of the many, who shared a similar sentiment about the film, stressing that the film didn’t have anything to say despite being brilliantly directed.
David Fincher’s The Killer
The Killer Has Nothing to Offer Narrativelty Apart From Great Visuals per Bret Easton Ellis
While visually impeccable as David Fincher doesn’t back down from displaying his skills behind the lens, Bret Easton Ellis expressed that the narrative of The Killer didn’t have much to offer.

If you thought our collective true crime fascination would have wound down at some point over the past few years, you've probably been pretty surprised at just how enduring our appetite for this stuff really is. We might only be a month and a half into 2024, but this year has already proven the true crime genre continues to captivate audiences worldwide, especially when Netflix is the purveyor.
Earlier this year, there was the "sickening" documentary "Hell Camp: Teen Nightmare," which chronicled the suffering of dozens of teenagers who were kidnapped and taken to a "wilderness therapy camp" which was basically an excuse to abuse them over the course of several months — and all with their parents' blessing. Lovely stuff. After that little appetizer, we all apparently became fascinated with Netflix's "American Nightmare," which told the story of a woman who was blamed for her own kidnapping. Now, the streamer has...

Online dating can be a minefield. Your feelings can get hurt. Your confidence can be shaken. Your time can be wasted. And you can wander into a maelstrom of murder, arson, and identity theft that leaves you questioning your previously established reality. This is the point at which a situation morphs from social annoyance to Netflix true crime documentary.
Lover, Stalker, Killer, whose title practically screams “edgy true crime doc!,” is a sort of tech-age cautionary tale about what can happen when you go looking for love on all the wrong websites.

Carey presented Cyrus with the first award of the night for Best Pop Solo Performance. The “Flowers” singer was seemingly shocked to hear her name from Carey. As the singer approached the podium, she was gasping all the way to receive her gramophone.
“This is just too iconic,” Cyrus said. “Oh my God, I just got stuck in the rain in traffic and thought I was going to miss this moment.”
She continued, “And I could’ve missed the award- that’s fine, but not Mariah Carey. I just saw you at the Hollywood Bowl; it was everything.”

A big-budget live-action adaptation of a cult Nickelodeon animated fantasy series, the return of a sports docuseries that transformed the global appeal of Formula 1, a new animated feature written by the incomparable Charlie Kaufman, and another season of a reality dating show that inspires equal parts love and hate on social media are among the standout projects hitting Netflix in February.
Netflix’s big feature release this month is the animated film Orion and the Dark, which debuts Feb. 2. Written by Charlie Kaufman, the celebrated scribe behind Being John Malkovich, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and Adaptation, the film is an adaptation of Emma Yarlett’s children’s book about an anxious kid who is scared of the dark. The Hollywood Reporter‘s review described Orion and the Dark as a film that “hilariously and movingly [taps] into typical childhood anxieties” and is “infused with ample wit of both the...

It’s a weird month on Netflix in February; one that will probably require you to be open-minded about the shows and movies you’re willing to consume on the service.
There are quite a few library TV series arriving this month, for example. If you’re ready to start binge-watching Monk, My Wife and Kids, or acclaimed show Warrior, you’re in luck, as those complete seasons will be available. The Blacklist season 10, Curb Your Enthusiasm season 12, Brooklyn Nine-Nine seasons 1-4, and Young Sheldon season 6 will also be hitting the ‘Flix.
In terms of what’s new, there’s a ton of foreign language content and true crime stuff, but original English language stuff will largely be unscripted fare like Love is Blind, which is back for a new season. There are a few bits and bobs on the way outside of that, though. Netflix’s animated movie Orion and the Dark will debut,...

Inspiration strikes at the oddest times. Recently, I was watching Blumhouse's "Night Swim" and started thinking about all the strangest killer objects in the history of horror movies. "Where would a swimming pool rank on such a list," I pondered. "Would it rank lower or higher than a hungry bed?" These are the hard-hitting questions that race through my head, only eased by tasks like ranking all the craziest, head-scratchiest, most out-of-bounds killer objects in horror movie history.
We're not talking about flesh and blood killers or animal attackers. Even something like "Santa Jaws" is omitted from contention because while you could blame either the magical pen or sketchbook canvas that brings the Great White Santa to life, it's still a jingle-jangling shark gobbling up victims. This list is dedicated to deadly things that should not kill. Monstrous versions of household items that spring to life and slay the innocent with a most baffling reaction.

Overtly, Kirtima from Killer Soup is the other woman. She’s meant to be the antagonist in some ways, especially in Swathi’s eyes. However, she’s just a girl trying to make it in this cruel world, you know? Kirtima has all the qualities that are considered admirable in a woman. She’s intelligent, ambitious, good with numbers, knows how to cook, she’s got the looks, of course, and she’s got a hidden talent! Kalaripayattu. Okay, well, it’s not really a hidden talent; everyone knows she performs it; I just felt like gift-wrapping it. I suppose since Swathi has Umesh, Kirtima might’ve been the right match for Prabhu. While Swathi brought out the worst in the man—those burps were so annoying!—Kirtima brought out a more caring side of him. I might be going off on a tangent, and of course, it’s just an affair and whatnot,...

We told you earlier this week about Stiletto, an upcoming horror movie from director Samuel Gonzalez Jr. (The Retaliators) that’s being described as a throwback to the early slashers of the 1980s. Bloody Disgusting has now exclusively learned that makeup effects legend Tom Savini and his creative partner Jason Baker designed the killer’s mask for the film!
The duo most recently designed the mask for Ethan Hawke’s sinister “The Grabber” in box office hit The Black Phone, which is getting a sequel from Blumhouse in Summer 2025.
Baker tells Bloody Disgusting in a statement, “Creating the killer’s mask for Samuel Gonzalez Jr. & Gigi Gustin on Stiletto was an absolute blast. I personally drew so much inspiration from the script. The film is a morbidly beautiful mixture of beauty and carnage. And that was the mindset we used in the design. Something elegant and terrifying at the same time.

Trying to find a pattern in the chaos. I found something that was missed by the original investigators..." Netflix has revealed an official trailer for yet another unsettling true crime documentary film called Lover, Stalker, Killer, streaming in February on Netflix. This feature doc from Curious Films (Running with the Devil) and director Sam Hobkinson, deftly assembles the pieces of a mind-bending true tale of harassment, digital deception, and murder in America’s heartland. Lover, Stalker, Killer tells the twisted tale of a modern-day love triangle gone murderously wrong. Following up other docs like The Tinder Swindler, this one examines how Nebraska auto mechanic Dave Kroupa's 2012 attempt to get into the online dating put him in a digital love triangle that ended in murder. This looks crazy! I don't like the way they over-stylize this incident and add all the dramatic music, but it still seems like a fascinating...

When Emily* showed up to her callback audition for a new film titled The Policeman starring Vincent Gallo, she knew it would be intense. In The Policeman, Gallo, who has a reputation for acting in controversial and edgy projects, plays serial killer and rapist Joseph James DeAngelo, also known as the Golden State Killer. The actress was auditioning to play one of his female victims who is raped and killed, and she was aware of the nudity and violence involved, as well as the dark nature of the film itself.

On the first day of Creepmas, my true love gave to me…12 Killer Santa horror movies to herald in Bloody Disgusting’s 12 Days of Creepmas. This year, we’re reinterpreting the “Twelve Days of Christmas” to bring twelve days of holiday horror. ‘Tis the season to be naughty, after all.
It feels only right to kick things off with a look at one of holiday horror’s most prominent icons: the Killer Santa Claus. The niche subgenre of Killer Santa holiday horror movies is as robust as ever, offering ample murderous maniacs to spread holiday fear this season. Here are 12 of the most prominent and bloodthirsty of the bunch.
If your favorites are missing, don’t worry; there’s still plenty of holiday horror fun on the way.

There are so many iconic horror monsters that have graced film screens over the years, striking fear in the hearts of audiences of all ages. Vampires, werewolves, ghosts, witches, zombies, and…circus clowns?
Ostensibly, a clown is a comedic performance, making fools out of themselves for the laughter and happiness of their audience. But as anyone who’s had to counsel a crying kid after they interacted with a birthday party clown will know, they often provoke the opposite response instead. A 2016 survey by the Morning Consult found that 42 percent of Americans were, to some degree, afraid of clowns: admittedly, this survey occurred after a minor mass hysteria over a series of alleged evil clown sightings across America, but the fact that “evil clown sightings” were even a thing indicates there’s some deeper hangups involving the make-up clad fools.

David Fincher isn’t looking to return to “The Social Network” anytime soon.
The “Killer” director told The Guardian in a wide-ranging interview that the 2010 Oscar-winning film could warrant a follow-up for fans, but that it would be a “can of worms” to untangle. Screenwriter Aaron Sorkin won the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay charting the rise of Facebook through the perspective of creator Mark Zuckerberg, played by Jesse Eisenberg. Andrew Garfield, Armie Hammer, and Rooney Mara also starred.
“Aaron [Sorkin] and I have talked about it,” Fincher said, “but that’s a can of worms.”
The director instead pointed to the possible franchise of “The Killer” starring Michael Fassbender. The Netflix film, penned by Fincher’s “Se7en” screenwriter, is based on the French graphic novel series that spans 15 volumes.
“One would think [it would warrant a sequel],” Fincher said. “I’ve given up on trying to predict what people want.”

David Fincher is “glad” the long-gestating “World War Z” sequel was ultimately scrapped.
The “Killer” director told GQ UK that the slated “World War Z” sequel would have explored similar themes to hit HBO series “The Last of Us,” which was based off of the video game franchise of the same name.
“Well, it was a little like ‘The Last of Us,'” Fincher said of the follow-up he planned to Marc Forster’s 2013 zombie apocalypse movie. “I’m glad that we didn’t do what we were doing, because ‘The Last of Us’ has a lot more real estate to explore the same stuff.”
Fincher continued, “In our title sequence, we were going to use the little parasite…they used it in their title sequence, and in that wonderful opening with the Dick Cavett, David Frost-style talk show.”
“World War Z” starred Brad Pitt as a U.N.

"Stick to the plan. Anticipate. Don't improvise." These are the mantra-like words of the nameless assassin in David Fincher's "The Killer." You could also imagine Fincher himself running those same words through his head as he obsessively makes a film. "The Killer" is clearly like catnip to the director — it's the story of an obsessive guy who meticulously goes about his work. Fincher makes movies. The Killer kills people. I'm not saying Fincher is on the same level as a cold-blooded killer, but he clearly sees a lot of himself (and his approach to his work) in his latest protagonist.
"The Killer" is a film as cold and calculating as its main character. One gets the sense that Fincher and writer Andrew Kevin Walker are going for something darkly funny, too, but the humor, while there, never quite connects. Part of that has to do with Michael Fassbender, who...

Colin Jost and Michael Che were back at the “Weekend Update” desk on Saturday Night Live to take jabs at politics and pop culture.
Jost started off the night by taking a jab a U.S. President Joe Biden and his “strong warning about anyone thinking about attacking Israel.” A cut of all the times that Biden said “Don’t” then played out, which drew the comparison to Guardians of the Galaxy character Groot who only repeats his name as his way of communicating.
“I really like that Biden only needs one word to get his point across,” Jost said. “He’s basically the Groot of presidents.”
Jost was not done roasting Biden when he continued, “To give you an idea how effective ‘Don’t’ is, it’s the same thing Biden says to his dog right before it bites another Secret Service agent.”

"Our goal is scary and original," Jason Blum said of Blumhouse at New York Comic Con 2023. "Even when we're doing IP or sequels, we always try to do something new."
Blum is a curator of the bloodcurdling, often with a dash of comedic rib-cracking. After all, he told his fans that "comedy and horror are cousins in many ways." The timing of a scare is linked to the timing of a joke. His producing credits include the likes of "M3GAN" and the "Halloween" trilogy. With that in mind, a house of horror-heads gathered at New York Comic Con's "Blumfest" to splash into more Blum-produced films, from the time travel hijinks of "Totally Killer," an evil swimming pool in "Night Swim," and the highly anticipated video game adaptation "Five Nights at Freddy's." If you've been tuning into Lifetime's latest Ripped From The Headlines True Crime slate, you know that they've been putting forward some powerful films.

But the most highly anticipated of the slate yet is the two-part Murdaugh Murders movie event starring the incomparable Bill Pullman.

The Exorcist: Believer is now playing in theaters. The first part in a proposed trilogy from Halloween director David Gordon Green and Blumhouse promised to be a direct follow-up to the original 1973 masterpiece, ignoring every single sequel that came before. That’s right, The Exorcist had numerous sequels, the last of which was released almost 20 years ago.
Most of them are… not good. And none of them have come even close to William Friedkin’s original classic. But that’s okay. Because the reality is, nothing ever will.

It’s a time-traveling adventure that takes us on a wild ride from the present day back to the neon-soaked, cassette-playing era of the 1980s. "Wake Up" is foaming at the mouth with primal thrills that do not care for mercy. Rkss presents their contemporary riff on "The Most Dangerous Game" in a department store setting, taking aim at unlucky Gen Z'ers who become trophy kills. Nothing matters but survival; a refreshingly focused take on apex predator material that veers into sickening slasher territory.
