One year later, the Barbenheimer shadow looms over the Academy Award Best Picture race.

The 10 nominees unveiled Thursday have a collective global box-office revenue of $1.7 billion. That might seem like an impressive number, but it represents a 37 percent drop from the $2.7 billion of the previous year.

How is it that the numbers slipped year-to-year by a billion dollars? Much as there were two blockbuster hits in 2023 — Barbie and eventual Best Picture winner Oppenheimer — so too were there a pair of massive hits in 2024: Dune: Part Two and Wicked. Each has grossed more than $700 million worldwide, not too shabby. However, those totals pale in comparison to the more than $2.4 billion combined that were racked up at the multiplex by Barbie ($1.4 billion) and Oppenheimer ($975 million). The sheer staggering nature of their record-breaking dominance over the 2023 box office remains a singular, unprecedented achievement.

The 2025 Oscar nominations were announced on Thursday to the usual surprised and offended audience.

The announcement was delayed by a few days due to the wildfires spreading across Los Angeles, but Rachel Sennott and Bowen Yang shared the news live on Jan. 23 from the Film Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater. The award show is slated to take place as planned, airing on March 2.

Emilia Pérez beat out the other features with 13 nominations; it was closely followed by Wicked and The Brutalist, which each have ten.

Following a Mexican drug lord transitioning gender, Emilia Pérez‘s 13 nominations set a new record for a non-English-language film. Star of the film Karla Sofía Gascón was also submitted for best actress, making her the first openly transgender actress to be nominated.

However, this year’s luncheon was canceled due to the devastating Los Angeles wildfires. The luncheon traditionally includes nominees being individually announced, receiving nomination certificates and posing for the iconic group photo on stage.

Records tumbling: As was widely expected, French musical crime drama Emilia Pérez could be in for a record-breaking Oscar night in a few weeks after landing a whopping 13 Academy Award noms. Jacques Audiard’s movie is already smashing ceilings, garnering the most noms for a film not in English and seeing star Karla Sofia Gascón become the first openly trans person ever to be nominated in an acting category. If Emilia Pérez wins the international prize, it will be the first French pic to do so in more than 30 years. That category, which we of course keep a close eye on, is dominated by Europeans, featuring Germany’s The Seed of the Sacred Fig, Latvia’s Flow and Denmark’s The Girl With The Needle.

Denis Villeneuve’s repeated Oscar snubs are sparking frustration among fans and industry insiders alike. Despite both Dune and Dune: Part Two earning nominations for Best Picture, Villeneuve was overlooked in the Best Director category for both films. Villeneuve’s accomplishments with Dune: Part Two warrant much better recognition than its current treatment. He undertook a notoriously challenging book-to-film adaptation, something that even legendary director David Lynch failed at. He also defied the sequel curse by making a second film that surpassed the critically acclaimed original.

“Does it get more Sundance than this?” Eugene Hernandez, the festival’s director, said at the opening night premiere of “Twinless,” which was being unveiled Thursday at the Eccles, Park City’s biggest venue. But the evening didn’t go off without a hitch. Shortly after Hernandez left the stage, a sizzle reel promoting the festival’s nonprofit arm had suffered sound problems. The moment was particularly unfortunate as the audio malfunctioned as the clip was introducing festival founder Robert Redford.

The house lights came up while sound was tested for five minutes. The film was quickly restarted, but the problem persisted throughout the screening to groans of “Nooooo!” from stressed audience members. Luckily, it didn’t derail the otherwise enthusiastically received film or the dual performance from Dylan O’Brien as twin brothers. Add to that extremely chatty Sundance tech and ground staff, and it made for a disruptive kickoff.

Emilia Pérez is the front-runner to beat

On Thursday (January 23), the Academy rolled out the nominations for the 2025 ceremony, which takes place on March 2. Timothee scored a Best Actor nod for his performance in A Complete Unknown, the Bob Dylan biopic.

While critics’ scores don’t determine the Best Picture lineup (there are thousands of highly rated movies each year), once the lineup is selected by the Motion Picture Academy, there are at least a few tea leaves worth reading. For instance, the only film to win Best Picture in the last 10 years with a freshness rating lower than 90 percent is Green Book, which has a Tomatometer score of just 77 percent.
