One year later, the Barbenheimer shadow looms over the Academy Award Best Picture race.
The 10 nominees unveiled Thursday have a collective global box-office revenue of $1.7 billion. That might seem like an impressive number, but it represents a 37 percent drop from the $2.7 billion of the previous year.
How is it that the numbers slipped year-to-year by a billion dollars? Much as there were two blockbuster hits in 2023 — Barbie and eventual Best Picture winner Oppenheimer — so too were there a pair of massive hits in 2024: Dune: Part Two and Wicked. Each has grossed more than $700 million worldwide, not too shabby. However, those totals pale in comparison to the more than $2.4 billion combined that were racked up at the multiplex by Barbie ($1.4 billion) and Oppenheimer ($975 million). The sheer staggering nature of their record-breaking dominance over the 2023 box office remains a singular, unprecedented achievement.

The 2025 Oscar nominations were announced on Thursday to the usual surprised and offended audience.
The announcement was delayed by a few days due to the wildfires spreading across Los Angeles, but Rachel Sennott and Bowen Yang shared the news live on Jan. 23 from the Film Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater. The award show is slated to take place as planned, airing on March 2.
Emilia Pérez beat out the other features with 13 nominations; it was closely followed by Wicked and The Brutalist, which each have ten.
Following a Mexican drug lord transitioning gender, Emilia Pérez‘s 13 nominations set a new record for a non-English-language film. Star of the film Karla Sofía Gascón was also submitted for best actress, making her the first openly transgender actress to be nominated.

“No Challengers in original score… I feared days like this would come,” New York Times culture writer Kyle Buchanan lamented on social media after the Oscar nominations were announced. “I think the lack of an original score nomination for Challengers renders the entire Oscar nominations list invalid,” opined Hollywood Reporter commentator Daniel Feinberg. When it comes to the Academy Awards, Best Original Score isn’t usually a category rife with controversy, but this year’s lineup stoked outrage when Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross weren’t nominated for their pulse-pounding compositions from the provocative tennis drama.
So what happened?
Just weeks earlier, Reznor and Ross won the Golden Globe for their score, defeating four of the films that did get Oscar nominations: The Brutalist, Conclave, Emilia Pérez, and The Wild Robot. The fifth Oscar nominee, Wicked, missed the cut at the Globes.
The composing team is also Oscar-pedigreed. Reznor and Ross,...

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is making arrangements for all nominees of this year’s 97th Academy Awards to gather for the traditional Oscar class photo.
The annual photo, which celebrates the achievements of the year’s nominees across 23 categories, typically takes place during the Oscar Nominees Luncheon. However, this year’s luncheon was canceled due to the devastating Los Angeles wildfires. The luncheon traditionally includes nominees being individually announced, receiving nomination certificates and posing for the iconic group photo on stage.
To ensure this year’s nominees receive proper recognition for their achievements, the Academy is planning a special gathering at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in Los Angeles during the week leading up to the Oscars ceremony on March 2, Variety has exclusively learned. Alongside the planned group photo session, nominees will also attend a series of smaller, intimate dinners. These category-specific gatherings, which have...

Jimmy Fallon joked that actor Sebastian Stan has gone full-blown method after starring as President Donald Trump in “The Apprentice” by telling people he has already won the Oscar for his performance.
“Sebastian Stan was nominated for Best Actor for his performance Donald Trump. You can tell Sebastian is still in character because he is already claiming he won,” Fallon said during his “Tonight Show” monologue Thursday night. The gag made light of Trump previously falsely declaring he’d won the 2020 Presidential Election against former President Joe Biden.

Oscar-nominated artisans Kris Bowers (“The Wild Robot”), Clément Ducol and Camille (“Emilia Perez), Paul Tazewell (“Wicked”) and Judy Becker (“The Brutalist”) are among the recipients being honored at Variety’s Artisans Awards.
Variety’s 11th annual Artisans Awards is set to take place on Feb. 8 at the Santa Barbara Film Festival.
The festival will be dedicated to Los Angeles. Earlier this month, devastating wildfires affected nearly 200,000 residents and burnt thousands of homes and structures. In a statement, the festival’s creative director Roger Durling said, “As the tragic events in our sister city of Los Angeles were unfolding, we debated about moving forward with Sbiff. Film has always been a conduit for comfort and renewal, and film festivals play a vital role in fostering a sense of connection. The 2025 Oscar nominations have finally arrived after much discussion about who the contenders will be, what precursors one should pay attention to, and delays due to the ongoing wildfires in Los Angeles.

The Academy Awards are considered the pinnacle of cinematic achievement. They are a celebration of films that have left an indelible mark on audiences and the industry alike. Every year, the Best Picture category incites intense debates about which movie truly deserves the honor.
Most of the time the Academy’s and the fans’ opinions align with winners such as The Godfather or Schindler’s List. Other times, however, their choices leave a bitter taste, as was the case with Crash and Shakespeare in Love.

This year, Emilia Perez stands to make Oscar history, with its bold narrative and social commentary striking a chord with many. While its themes of representation and inclusion have garnered applause, questions linger whether it deserves the Oscar or not.

The 2025 Academy Award nominations are out, and they are whelming. The musical drama Emilia Pérez received the most nominations with 13, followed by Wicked and The Brutalist with 10 apiece, and then A Complete Unknown and Conclave with eight apiece.
Meanwhile, Dune: Part Two got only five nominations, down from the 10 that Dune: Part One received after it came out in 2021. This is despite the fact that Dune: Part Two was better reviewed than Part One and made more money at the box office than Part One. If you saw the movie, you know that Part Two finished adapting Frank Herbert's seminal 1965 sci-fi novel Dune, so it was no wonder that the second movie improved on the first; director Denis Villeneuve got to work with the juiciest parts of the book.
So why did Part Two receive fewer Oscar nominations? And why did Villeneuve not get a nomination for either of the films?...

With a 215-minute runtime and an epic scope, The Brutalist is arriving in UK cinemas with an interval built-in. But why will the fad never catch on?
Two-and-a-half hours into Killers Of The Flower Moon, it would be difficult to begrudge anyone begging Martin Scorsese for a quick loo break. The man’s 82 years old, for a start – surely he could appreciate the need for a call of nature?
And yet, when a handful of cinemas took it upon themselves to shoehorn a little break into the 206-minute epic in 2023, editor Thelma Schoonmaker called it “a violation”. Brady Corbet’s 215-minute The Brutalist, in UK cinemas this weekend, has earned its share of publicity for building in a nice little break after its first chapter. Cue the reignition of a debate which pops up every couple of years in filmic circles; should longer films bring back the half-time interval?

‘Emilia’ Marches On
Records tumbling: As was widely expected, French musical crime drama Emilia Pérez could be in for a record-breaking Oscar night in a few weeks after landing a whopping 13 Academy Award noms. Jacques Audiard’s movie is already smashing ceilings, garnering the most noms for a film not in English and seeing star Karla Sofia Gascón become the first openly trans person ever to be nominated in an acting category. If Emilia Pérez wins the international prize, it will be the first French pic to do so in more than 30 years. That category, which we of course keep a close eye on, is dominated by Europeans, featuring Germany’s The Seed of the Sacred Fig, Latvia’s Flow and Denmark’s The Girl With The Needle.

The Academy Awards have always been a stage where history is made, records are broken, and legacies are cemented. In 2025, the Best Actor category could potentially deliver another groundbreaking moment. If Timothée Chalamet, the 29-year-old Hollywood heartthrob, takes home the coveted statue, he will become the youngest actor ever to win the award.
This milestone would dethrone Adrien Brody, who has held the record for over two decades after his win for The Pianist in 2003 at just 29 years and 343 days old. The stakes are high for Chalamet, who is not just a fan favorite but also a critically lauded performer. His nomination this year comes for his role as a young Bob Dylan in A Complete Unknown.

While the Academy often leans toward rewarding seasoned actors, Chalamet’s undeniable talent and growing cinematic influence make him a strong contender.

Brady Corbet has made his best film yet with an American epic about a Jewish refugee. Here’s our The Brutalist review.
The Brutalist, Brady Corbet’s Cannes sensation, feels timely despite its post-World War II setting. Its take on the immigration experience, seen through the eyes of a Hungarian-Jewish architect, was always going to hit close to home to anyone who has abandoned their birth country in the search of a new life, but The Brutalist feels even more painfully real after the re-election of a certain US president.
We first meet László Tóth (Adrien Brody) as he is arriving in New York. He can barely hold in his excitement as the Statue of Liberty towers over him. László is a kind, selfless man, but the longer he lives in America, the more that seems to change.

This year’s Academy Awards season is set to become one of the most interesting and tightly contested seasons in the past few years. Everything from amazing biopics to genre roles has been delivered, and audiences have seen some amazing works from actresses within all categories.
It seems that besides showing the nominees’ performances and technicalities, the 2025 Oscar race is going to highlight their social and cultural influence and there will probably be some conversations that take place off the red carpet.

Denis Villeneuve’s repeated Oscar snubs are sparking frustration among fans and industry insiders alike. Despite both Dune and Dune: Part Two earning nominations for Best Picture, Villeneuve was overlooked in the Best Director category for both films. His snub is disheartening after he blew away viewers with the breathtaking cinematic scope of the second Dune film.

Villeneuve’s accomplishments with Dune: Part Two warrant much better recognition than its current treatment. He undertook a notoriously challenging book-to-film adaptation, something that even legendary director David Lynch failed at. He also defied the sequel curse by making a second film that surpassed the critically acclaimed original.

“Does it get more Sundance than this?” Eugene Hernandez, the festival’s director, said at the opening night premiere of “Twinless,” which was being unveiled Thursday at the Eccles, Park City’s biggest venue. But the evening didn’t go off without a hitch. Shortly after Hernandez left the stage, a sizzle reel promoting the festival’s nonprofit arm had suffered sound problems. The moment was particularly unfortunate as the audio malfunctioned as the clip was introducing festival founder Robert Redford.
The house lights came up while sound was tested for five minutes. The film was quickly restarted, but the problem persisted throughout the screening to groans of “Nooooo!” from stressed audience members. Luckily, it didn’t derail the otherwise enthusiastically received film or the dual performance from Dylan O’Brien as twin brothers. Add to that extremely chatty Sundance tech and ground staff, and it made for a disruptive kickoff.

It’s Oscar season…how do you feel about this year’s list of nominees (and snubs). We were definitely surprised to see that award-darling “Challengers” was notably missing, as well as nods to Nicole Kidman for “Babygirl”, Angelina Jolie for “Maria” and Stanley Tucci for “The Conclave.

Michelle Yeoh said the Wicked cast is celebrating but also “crying” after the 2025 Oscar nominations were revealed.
The actress, who played Madame Morrible in the movie musical, stopped by The View on Thursday, where panelist Joy Behar asked if she had yet to connect with her fellow castmembers after Wicked earned 10 noms earlier in the morning.
Among the film’s nominations were best picture, Cynthia Erivo for best actress, Ariana Grande for best supporting actress, best costume design and best original score. However, Jon M. Chu was shut out of the directing category.
“Yes! We are all crying for joy,” said Yeoh, who previously won an Oscar for her role in Everything Everywhere All at Once. “But, we must say we are also crying because Jon M. Chu, Alice Brooks — our Dp — were not nominated, but the rest of us are celebrating. Best picture, costumes, hair!”

When it comes to this year’s Oscar nominations, the love was spread across the distributor scoreboard, from legacy Hollywood studios and their specialty divisions, to streamers and maverick indie distributors.
Netflix walked away with the most of any individual distributor on Tuesday with a total of 16 nods after Emilia Pérez landed a spot in 13 categories, the most of any film this year and setting a new record for a non-English-language film. And it’s just one shy of the all-time record for any film (All About Eve, Titanic and La La Land each landed 14).
Next up on the Academy’s scorecard of top-nominated individual distributors was powerhouse A24 with 14, including 10 for The Brutalist. The movie, which swept the Golden Globes, will use its front-runner status as it continues to expand in theaters, where it has earned a promising $5.9 million despite only playing in several hundred cinemas to date.

For a race that seemed as unpredictable as any in recent history, the 2025 Oscar nominations came and went without many huge surprises. All the expected acting contenders — including frontrunners like Demi Moore, Adrien Brody, Timothée Chalamet, Zoe Saldaña, and Kieran Culkin — were bestowed with nominations on Thursday, as were several films long predicted to score Best Picture recognition. But while the 97th Oscars were perhaps shorter than usual on snubs and surprises, the list of nominees did clarify which films Academy voters truly loved and what might ultimately win Best Picture in March. Ahead are the key takeaways from the 2025 Oscar nominations.
Emilia Pérez is the front-runner to beat
With 13 Oscar nominations on Thursday, including Best Picture, Best International Feature, Best Director, and acting nominations for Karla Sofia Gascón and Zoe Saldaña, Emilia Pérez is not just the year’s top Oscar contender but one of the most decorated nominees in history.

Youth is not wasted on the young, especially if you’re Timothée Chalamet. The A Complete Unknown star made Oscar history in more ways than one with his Best Actor nomination for the Bob Dylan biopic on Thursday.
Chalamet, who turned 29 on Dec. 27, is the youngest person to score multiple Best Actor nominations since James Dean. As writer and film historian Mark Harris first noted on Bluesky, both men accomplished this feat before the age of 30. Chalamet received his first bid at 22 for 2017’s Call Me by Your Name. Dean died at 24 in September 1955 in a car crash. Less than six months later, Dean received a posthumous nomination for East of Eden. He earned a second one the following year for Giant and remains the only performer to receive multiple posthumous nominations.

At this point, we’ve seen so many iterations of The Joker. From Caesar Romero to Jack Nicholson to Heath Ledger to whatever Jared Leto was going for, the Clown Prince of Crime, just about everything has been done. And while nobody did it like Ledger, we do wonder what other actors would have brought to the makeup had they edged him out. Some, like Joaquin Phoenix (who was offered the role) would get their chance later on, but others will forever be a fantasy – and usually for good reason. Take Adrien Brody, for example, who says he was in the conversation to play The Joker in The Dark Knight, even if it faded quickly.
Adrien Brody recently appeared on the Happy Sad Confused podcast and reflected on circling The Joker for Christopher Nolan. While he does admit that he was far from landing the role, he did express his...

Cynthia Erivo is back in the Egot running. Should the Wicked star win an Oscar for best actress, Erivo would join Hollywood’s most exclusive club of stars who have won an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar and a Tony.
Only 19 people have won all four trophies before. Erivo is currently part of another select group — those who are only one away.
The broadway superstar won a Tony in 2016 for her performance as Celie Harris Johnson in Broadway’s The Color Purple and took home a Grammy a year later for best musical theater album for the same role. Sean Baker, Jacques Audiard, James Mangold, Coralie Fargeat and Brady Corbet were among those nominated in multiple categories for the 97th Academy Awards when Oscar nominations were announced Thursday.
Emilia Pérez led the 2025 Oscars pack with 13 total nominations, setting a record for the most for a film not in the English language. This included three for filmmaker Audiard, who was nominated for best director, adapted screenplay and original song. (The movie is also nominated for best international feature, but the Academy has not specified who would receive a trophy for that category.)
Following closely behind in the nominations tally was The Brutalist with 10. Corbet was the recipient of two of those, with the filmmaker nominated for best director and original screenplay.
A Complete Unknown, the biopic starring Timothée Chalamet as music legend Bob Dylan, landed eight nominations. This included three for Mangold, who was recognized for best picture, director and adapted screenplay.

How do the 2025 Oscars Best Picture nominees stack up on Rotten Tomatoes? And does the film with the highest freshness rating have a better shot at winning the big prize?
While critics’ scores don’t determine the Best Picture lineup (there are thousands of highly rated movies each year), once the lineup is selected by the Motion Picture Academy, there are at least a few tea leaves worth reading. For instance, the only film to win Best Picture in the last 10 years with a freshness rating lower than 90 percent is Green Book, which has a Tomatometer score of just 77 percent.
Last year’s winner, Oppenheimer, holds a formidable 93 percent, but it didn’t rank first among it’s competitors. That distinction went to The Holdovers, which has a rating of 97 percent. So, a movie doesn’t have to have the highest score to win Best Picture, but it certainly helps its chances.

In my Oscar predictions piece on Wednesday, I warned about the possibility that this year’s list could be even more international than in recent years, partly because of the L.A. wildfires, which moved the Academy to extend the voting period twice and by nearly a week overall. It was indicative that voters in Los Angeles, where a lot of them live, might have been preoccupied. This said to me that the ever-growing international base of Oscar voters, not affected by the fires, might have more influence than ever on the nominations.
There is no question that happened.
Let’s start with Best Picture. Since Z in 1969, there have been 11 films simultaneously nominated for Best International Feature (formerly known as Best Foreign Language Film) and Best Picture. This year, for the first time, there are two: France’s Spanish-language Emilia Pérez and Brazil’s highly political I’m Still Here,...

“Emilia Pérez” and “Wicked” emerged January 23 as the two Oscar craft juggernauts, scoring seven nominations apiece and setting up a battle of the musicals at the 97th Academy Awards on March 2. This matches the seven craft nominations of last year’s eventual Best Picture winner “Oppenheimer.”
Jacques Audiard’s operatic thriller “Emilia Pérez” grabbed cinematography (Paul Guillaume), makeup and hairstyling, editing (Juliette Welfling), score (Clément Ducol and Camille), sound, and two original songs (“El Mal” by Clément Ducol and Camille and Audiard and “Mi Camino” by Camille and Ducol).
Jon M. Chu’s populist blockbuster “Wicked” captured costume design (Paul Tazewell), production design, makeup and hairstyling, editing (Myron Kerstein), sound, score (John Powell and Stephen Schwartz), and VFX.
Sharing four noms were “The Brutalist,” “Conclave,” “Dune: Part Two,” and “Nosferatu.”

Dune: Part Two star Josh Brolin chided the Academy for not nominating director Denis Villeneuve for his acclaimed work on the blockbuster sci-fi sequel.
Brolin took to his Instagram stories to point out that “it makes no sense” that Villeneuve was snubbed for best director given the film racking up five nominations — including best picture.
“Apparently, I’m going to quit acting because Denis Villeneuve didn’t get nominated, and this is just how this thing works,” the Gurney Halleck actor said. “Makes no sense to me. That’s okay. It’s an amazing film. I think it was even better than the first one. But the people who have gotten accolades sure deserve it and happy to be a part of it.”
Given that Villeneuve is a producer on the film (along with Mary Parent, Cale Boyter and Tanya Lapointe), he could still win an Oscar if Dune: Part...
