Religion of Sports and Showtime Sports are teaming up on “Goliath,” a new three-part docuseries examining the life, career and impact of basketball icon Wilt Chamberlain from his emergence on the national scene as a high schooler in the 1950s through his death in 1999.
“We are honored to team up with this group of talented filmmakers to bring the under-examined story of Wilt Chamberlain’s complex life to the masses,” Showtime Sports president Stephen Espinoza said in a statement. “Everybody knows Wilt for his legendary accomplishments on the basketball court — scoring 100 points in a game, averaging 50 points and 25 rebounds in a season — but there’s so much more to him than his stats. He was far ahead of his time in so many ways that will last infinitely longer than the numbers on a scoreboard.”

Meet the St. Francis Academy Panthers, the best high school football team you’ve probably never heard of. They were so good that they were kicked out of their top-flight high school league. In the trailer for the HBO docuseries, “The Cost of Winning,” which spotlights the team, you can see that there’s much more to the story.
The Panthers won three consecutive Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association championships before being expelled from their league in 2018, which led to accusations of racial bias. In the trailer, it is noted that the other schools in the Miaa were predominantly white (St. Francis is known as one of the oldest African-American catholic schools in the country). That led the team to crafting its own schedule. Despite the setback, Panthers seniors ultimately received scholarship offers from some of the top collegiate programs in the country, including Lsu, Alabama and Clemson.

Charles Barkley reacted to the uproar over New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees’ comments about athletes kneeling during the national anthem, saying he didn’t agree with Brees at all, but found the “vitriol” against him to be “overkill.”
“Drew’s original statement, I thought, was insensitive,” Barkley explained during a panel discussion on NBA on TNT Thursday night.
He went on, “It was very insensitive, especially during this time, but I thought the negative reaction from every talking head on television and some of his teammates was overkill. I’ve never heard a bad word about Drew Brees in my life. He made a mistake but we’ve got to a point in society where everybody on social media thinks they are God, judge and jury.”

LeBron James thinks that NFL owners need to drop what he called their “slave mentality” regarding athletes on their teams and how they express themselves politically, on or off the field.

The title for Showtime documentary series “Shut Up and Dribble” was inspired by LeBron James’ feud with Fox News host Laura Ingraham last February, but the project had been in the works long before that.
“I don’t believe in coincidences … that it took two years to make and got released now after the world has become increasingly politicized is very synchronistic,” director Gotham Chopra told TheWrap. “When we first started, it was going to be equal parts social impact and cultural impact — and there was going to be more basketball in it — but this just felt like a natural evolution of the project and the conversation.”
James clearly didn’t heed Ingraham’s advice to “keep the political comments” to himself and instead used her words against her on the three-part series that he executive produced along with Maverick Carter and Chopra. Former ESPN anchor Jemele Hill, who has...
