So beautiful to look at, this is moving art!
alsation7217 March 2019
I loved this one ... at first I didn't think it fit in with the rest of the collection , but it does. It looks amazing and the high-fantasy story is compelling enough that I kept checking the time left on the clip, regretting that it wasn't longer.

Great Episode

Please give some credit to Ken Liu for being a writer. Unless I'm mistaken this was a very good short story in his "Paper Menagerie" book.

After looking at all these reviews, holy hell people are sensitive. Who cares if it didn't depict history and culture correctly, it's fantasy ffs. This episode has good animation, very good & compelling story. One of the best episodes if not the best.

One of the favourite episodes in love death robot
magicbluebox20 March 2019
This is a really beautiful episode and as Chinese this episode could really relate. In so many ancient stories in China, many blamed women as the reason why one man could fall from their peak of career, their study or even their ruling if the country. These women are blamed for centuries because of their beauty and being loved. What young Yan said is pretty much a response to those blames. And in their adulthood, the theme seems shifted a bit. This story might be ecplised by trying to express and criticise too much. The later theme looks fine actually. But I was hoping the writers could expand their first theme a little. Besides that, it's still a very beautiful episode.

NOT FOR EVERYONE
zdflanders30 March 2019
Warning: Spoilers
This one is a bit tough to watch and is undoubtably very disturbing hence the title, NOT FOR EVERYONE.

Personally I love characters undergo a physical metamorphosis to become something unstoppable. This is especially interesting when the character has suffered so much and that suffering leads to their transformation. This is why characters like Wolverine from X-Men or Griffith from Berserk are incredibly popular. It just makes for a stronger character.

Having said that, this episode is about the moments leading up to the creation of an epic vigilante. While it is incredibly depraved, it's worth a watch if you are up for it. I seriously wish this could've been a full length movie or series. It'd be neat to watch.

One of the best episodes
rapiz-8916825 May 2021
It mixes Chinese traditional tales and steampunk in a unexpected and perfect way. At first, it kind of confuses me because nothing in the episode looks like something I would expect from Love, Death & Robots. A Classic Chinese themed story of , relaxing music with Chinese instruments, the spirits that may be the most mentioned in all kinds by Chinese. So I find no reason that such a episode appears in such a series.

And then the story flows in a surprising but reasonable way. All kinds of stuff come in. Machines, robots, and even some half-genuine history of Hong Kong during the colony period. I couldn't even imagine so many seemingly conflicted elements appearing in a single episode. However, Good Hunting put things together perfectly.

Chinese Steampunk. The British's fault.
GraXXoR20 March 2019
As a long term resident of Japan, I have found this story is quite common in Asian comics and animation.. Half human, half animal spirits inhabit the real world and sometimes clash with humans, the defacto rulers, who by merit of their technology disrupt the spirit connection or destroy the magic and thus threatens their existence.

The episode gets props, IMO, for an interesting and so-far unexplored menagerie of genres and a charming, if somewhat pedestrian animatorial style: something akin to Studio Ghibli.

While it is undoubtedly a charming, self-contained story in and of itself, and an original pretext, I feel that it landed short of a number of the higher-art, ground-breaking episodes that have dotted this series so far.

Apart from the unexpected collision of occidental steampunk and Asian spiritualism/animism, there is very little else on offer from an animation standpoint and a rather mundane outing other than a mildly charming episode.

A good short that gives us something to think about
jjmarquez-1288216 February 2021
From all the chapters of the Love Death & Robots series, this is one of the most captivating, the story, while not being completely tragic, isn't happy (as isn't any of the stories told in the previously mentioned series) It carries almost the same message as Princess Mononoke, being an excellent chronological successor in the "we need to think more about nature" series of content, that carries that hard hitting message that we seem to forget from time to time.

My congratulations to the team responsible for this and to Ken Liu for writing this story.

Great Episode that is hard to watch
apc-659792 May 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I care more about the plots of these short stories more than the effects (which are beautiful). With that being said, I think this is one of the better episodes of series by far. It has a magical story and although the subplot relating to the British colonizers is dark, it is not something that people should be getting angry about.

However, the arc of the Yan is dark, and I think her story of prostitution and her surgery into a robot in particular was very hard to watch. More so than some of the other dark scenes within this series.

I still think it was an amazing story, but I think the topics in this episode can be difficult to watch and could be a sensitive topic to some viewers.

Masterpiece

One of the best episodes of that series. Great story, great art, great atmosphere of the influence of the development of civilization on those who caught the verge of "before and after"... Just a great job that deserves a standalone full-time cartoon.

A good story let down by some awkward voice acting. Why not just use subtitles?

The fantasy of a teenage boy.
Pjtaylor-96-1380444 January 2020
'Good Hunting (2019)' feels like the fantasy of a teenage boy. Its unnecessary nudity, 'furry'-esque designs and pseudo sexualised violence feel decidedly immature. The experience tries so hard to be 'edgy', but blood and boobies don't make for mature viewing. As such, the flick completely misses the mark in terms of adult storytelling. It also struggles with its structure and pacing. It's essentially a series of vignettes with an unsatisfying end. It never feels like it's saying anything, other than its broad 'science is the new magic' message. The 2D animation is nicely done, competently conveying both fast-paced action and intimate dialogue. It has a decent premise and an interesting, if confused, world. In the end, though, it just isn't all that entertaining. It has its moments, of course, but it's mostly uninspired. It feels immature, misjudged and generally just unfulfilling. 5/10

A genuine short feature
RogerBorg30 May 2022
There's a huge amount of story content crammed into the 17 minute runtime, credit for that. This really does feel like a fully conceived feature film condensed down to its basics.

The art and animation style are perfect for the tale being told, and have a lovely gaslight fantasy look to them - I'd love to see Girl Genius being animated in this style.

I do have to ding it on some details though. First, the presence of a katana in a Chinese tale is more baffling than any of the steampunk technology. The insistence on having cocks and boobs flopping around is tedious, although it's less adolescent here than in most of the other shorts in this series - clearly the message went out that this would be adult-only, and so every episode HAD to be adult.

Having Hollywood-Oriental voice actors speaking in heaviry accrented Engrish is daft. Just have them speak in Mandarin or Cantonese (if they can) and subtitle it.

And finally, the premise that English colonialism is worse than Mandarin despotism is pretty hard to swallow. In terms of sheer numbers, the Mandarin Empire has oppressed and slaughtered far more than the English ever did.

For all that, it's a fine piece of art and storytelling: just don't over-think it.

feels like a china mieville adaption
gary-0840531 March 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I just went to imdb to check if china mieville had his hands on this one. I'm sure his books have been an inspiration for this episode.

* a world where magic and (weird steampunk) technology coexist - check * remade(steampunk cyborgs) - check * constructs(steampunk robots) - check * a giant moloch of a city - check, this hong kong looks a hell like new crobuzon * weird airships - check * iron council train reference - check * social- and technology criticism - check * perverted upperclass - check * a fReemade going vigilante - check

You may have guessed, i'm a fan of mievilles books. And i started smiling more and more when i watched this episode. If you liked this episode and want more like it, give "perdido street station" a try.

Brings me back to GoldenEye 007 for N64
nadblaster27 April 2019
This is a fantastic episode, which looks great and has a great story. The whole thing is really brought down by the GoldenEye 007 "pain" sound effects. It sounds weird to complain about that one thing but when you're watching an incredible animation job, telling an excellent and touching story, and the one thing they skimped on was better sound effects for pain/effort grunts it'll drag you out of the experience real quick.

I'm not exaggerating, by the way. These are literally the sounds from the N64 GoldenEye game.

It has some really good elements and some really bad elements. Overall I enjoyed it but there are certainly aspects I would change. Not the most original animation but fun to watch.

Good but could have been better
than21720 March 2019
So I liked this episode. I didn't think i would like it at the beginning but it grabbed my attention as it progressed HOWEVER it felt like it was written in two halves by different people that then tried to combine the two stories together awkwardly. I would have preferred each stories individually as full episodes to the 'one' story that seemed awkwardly forced. Overall it's one of my favorite episodes of the series but I just wish the story seemed more linear instead of changing what it was trying to tell halfway through.

Hong Kong phooey
southdavid9 April 2019
I've decided to review each of the short films that make up this series individually.

A spirit hunter spares the life of a young fox spirit, only to meet up years later in a steam-punk Hong Kong under the grip of British oppression.

Back to a traditional animation style for this one which was fine throughout. The story was OK and to be fair, wasn't one I'd seen before, or was expecting - but the "android" twists seem to come out of nowhere. It was fine, but not one that will live long in the memory.

Disappointed
kevinandjinfeng24 October 2020
I was sad after starting this episode, and turned it off half-way through. It was just another predictable trope of a psycopath treating people bad with no motivation other than being cruel, and artificially created revenge situations. No imagination, and overly gory. I saw no point to this story.

Anyone who gives this a low rating is an incel
maxol-1454414 June 2022
One of the best episodes of this series. Hits hard and very unapologetic about the cruel nature of men. I believe some incels were bitter that this didn't represent their usual Anime tastes, i.e. Defenseless women being saved by heroic men. Instead this depicts men as the evil aggressors and the female victim fights back.
