The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences on Thursday revealed the 366 feature films that are eligible for consideration at the 93rd Oscars, which are set to air April 25 live on ABC.
The total number of films is up from last year’s 344 films in contention.
This year’s list was compiled based on tweaked eligibility rules implemented because of the coronavirus pandemic, which has pushed the ceremony to its latest date ever. For this year, feature films had to open by February 28 in a commercial motion picture theater for a seven-day qualifying run in at least one of six metro areas: Los Angeles County, New York City, the Bay Area, Chicago, Miami and Atlanta. Drive-in theaters open nightly were included as qualifying venues, as were films intended for theatrical release but because of the lockdown made available first via streaming, VOD service or other broadcast.

With lockdowns around the country still in place due to Covid, you may find yourself longing for the days of live music, counting down the days until seeing your favorite band on tour again is not only possible, but safe.
Covid-19 has left its mark on many industries, but the global live music industry has seen venues shut down, major festivals and tours screech to a halt, and artists left without rowdy crowds to sing back their most beloved lyrics. There truly is no substitute to seeing live music in-person...

It really did all come down to that Fleetwood Mac TikTok video, didn’t it? There it was, right in the middle of an inauguration week that was emotionally messy and culturally turbulent on such historic levels: a montage of American idiots, from sea to shining sea, doing their thing to the bass line of “Dreams.” Idaho skater Nathan Apodaca was there, riding his board, sipping his cranberry juice, doing his viral TikTok-star turn, while Stevie Nicks sings about walking through the wreckage of her broken heart and moving on.

A week ago, the race for the Best Animated Feature Oscar seemed as if it could have the smallest field of entries in years. Only 13 films were in the online screening room devoted to the category, although some significant contenders were clearly going to be added, Pixar’s “Soul,” Cartoon Saloon’s “Wolfwalkers” and Gkids’ “Earwig and the Witch” among them.
But on Friday, Jan. 15, voters in the category awoke to find that the size of the race had essentially doubled. Instead of 13 films in the screening room, there were 27, with the newcomers including not just “Soul” and “Wolfwalkers” and “Earwig and the Witch,” but also films from Denmark (“Dreambuilders”), Poland (“Kill It and Leave This Town”), Latvia (“My Favorite War”), South Korea (“Red Shoes and the Seven Dwarfs”) and India (“Bombay Rose”), as well as a Croatian movie with the intriguing and confounding title “Accidental Luxuriance of the Translucent Water Rebus.

Two weeks after releasing an explicit rendition of their decade-old cult classic “Potential Breakup Song,” Aly & Aj dropped a new single called “Listen!!!” whose lyrical content is about as charged as the former. Heart’s Nancy Wilson contributed guitar and backing vocals on the track, while Jack Tatum of Wild Nothing brought in backing vocals as well.
Sonically, “Listen!!!” isn’t too much of a departure from the band’s Og sound, with the track fitting perfectly into the style of the duo’s 2007 album Insomniatic. With lyrics about how...

Haley Reinhart is celebrating what would have been David Bowie’s 74th birthday with the release of a powerful cover of one of his most iconic songs, “Heroes.”
Reinhart, who finished third on the 10th season of “American Idol” and became a viral sensation as the face of Scott Bradlee’s Postmodern Jukebox with her cover of Radiohead’s “Creep,” kicks off the 1977 classic a capella, building the song to a triumphantly quiet finish with lush orchestration amidst a subtle arrangement highlighting her clear, emotive vocals.
Reinhart is one of the stars of the Netflix film “We Can Be Heroes,” a top-streamed movie on the platform with 44 million views in its first four weeks. The film centers on “The Heroics,” superhero parents kidnapped by aliens. It is up to the children to rescue them and step into their roles as the next generation of heroes. Each month, the editors and critics at Rolling Stone compile a list of our favorite new albums. Our picks for Deceember include Taylor Swift’s second amazing album of 2020, Playboi Carti’s cathartic punk-loving rap and a covers LP from the late Chris Cornell.
Paul McCartney, McCartney III
Every decade should kick off with a Paul McCartney one-man-band album — and this one needs it more than most. McCartney III carries on his tradition of homemade solo records, in the mode of his acoustic 1970 debut and his 1980 synth-pop oddity McCartney II.

When all 1,180 screens across Cineworld and Picturehouse’s cinemas in the U.K. and Ireland shutter from Friday, they will wipe out a third of potential box office revenue for distributors. On top of Odeon’s plans for weekend-only operations in a quarter of its movie theaters, the outlook may appear bleak for cinema-going in the U.K. But as the dust settles, numerous distributors tell Variety that the exhibition crisis won’t hinder their release plans, even though the temporary loss of Cineworld will make an undeniable dent in revenues.
“In the past three months, we’ve been incredibly proactive in the theatrical space and released six films that have a combined gross box office of over £2.5 million [$3.2 million],” Rupert Preston, CEO of Vertigo Releasing, told Variety. “Cineworld and Picturehouse have accounted for over 30% of that gross. So clearly, without them, there is a big hole to fill going forward.

Did we call it or did we call it? Carole Baskin will hit the floor for her second dance on “Dancing with the Stars” to yet another kitty-themed song: “What’s New Pussycat” by Tom Jones. Tptb can’t stop, won’t stop.
The “Tiger King” star and Pasha Pashkov have the Viennese waltz, which might be slow enough to help them improve on their score of 11 for their paso doble on the premiere. The Viennese waltz is one of seven dances on deck for Week 2 — foxtrot, samba, tango, rumba, cha-cha and jive being the others.
Busting out the tough samba and rumba this early feels wrong, but Skai Jackson has the former and Justina Machado has the latter. They topped the leaderboard Week 1, each with a 21, and all signs so far point to them being able to handle whatever Alan Bersten and Sasha Farber, respectively, throw at them. Chrishell Stause also has the rumba,...

‘Mama Weed’ starring Isabelle Huppert, is also opening in France.
France, opening Wednesday September 9
The French box office appeared to be on route to recovery in the first week of September thanks to the launch of Tenet and a wider range of titles on release generally. It now remains to be seen if this momentum can be sustained with further US studio releases remaining elusive and the country on high alert following a spike in Covid-19 cases.
French cinemas this week will mainly be reliant on local films to draw spectators.

There is something rather charming about Dreambuilders, the new feature from Hydralab animation studio and director Kim Hagen Jensen. It is a shamelessly derivative patchwork of locations, character arcs and story beats borrowed from elsewhere but there is a sweetness about the film which inclines us to cut it some slack.
Minna and her father have built a happy life together, both a little bruised by the absence of Minna’s musician mum who left many years before to follow her dreams. The two have fallen into familiar patterns which punctuate their days; they dance together in the kitchen to the sounds of a Mariachi band and play endless games of chess.
In her dreams, however, a more unsettled Minna is revealed. Change is coming to her cosy household and the big-hearted little girl fears the havoc it will wreak. Behind the scenes her dream-builder, Gaff (Luke Griffin), is concerned...

Noah Cyrus’s platinum single “July” just got a new music video nearly a year after the song’s release — and it was shot completely through the video game Dreams, a Sony PlayStation exclusive.
Cyrus’s video-game experience is the latest in Sony’s “A Sony Collaboration Series,” which pointedly highlights Sony’s cross-company strength in music, gaming, and electronics. The concept of a game-based music video is not new: A music video for Travis Scott and Kid Cudi’s April hit, “The Scotts,” came from Scott’s popular “Astronomical” stream on Fortnite,...

Only three new titles will be playing on the opening weekend.
The UK film release schedule is coming together for July and August as the industry approaches the first weekend that cinemas are allowed to reopen.
However, a lack of venues and the difficulty of coordinating international releases means only two films have confirmed new releases for the first weekend of July, with another beginning previews.
As of July 1, 18 new films will be released into UK cinemas in July. The majority of these are small releases, with none coming from the major studios.
