The Batman (2022)

the millennials have come out in force
3 March 2022
I can truly say that I've never experienced this yet, a campaign of millennial non-sense that already insists this is the best Batman movie ever made... and if you give it any less than an 8/10... you'll receive a 'not helpful' click under the review you probably put a lot of thought into... yes, the millennials have woken.

This movie isn't bad, it's plenty dark (mood wise and stylistically) much more like the DC comics... it kinda reminds me of 'Dredd' in that sense, which was good but not great, however much better than the Stallone flick... the difference is that movie was R-Rated, 'The Batman' is not, so we'll still have to wait to see what I've longed for all my life, a R-Rated Batman film.

I have major issues with cast choices for 3 main actors... in the case of Robert Pattinson, I knew it wasn't going to work. For whatever reason, they thought a Brit would be a good choice but it really wasn't... it's not that I don't like him, I really liked 'The Lighthouse' (a role he was strangely suited for)... and Paul Dano was not a good choice either, I could think of 10 actors off the top of my head who would've been much better, he's got that quirky, bizzare cleverness needed for the role but I'm not a big fan of his.... and don't get me started about Zoe Kravitz.

Overall, this film was completely unnecessary, but at least they didn't just re-do the same old Batman vs. Joker we've seen several times.

Action/Special Effects are excellent... and a big reason I didn't score it lower.

there are good and great PG-13 horror films... this is not one of them
4 February 2022
Poltergeist, The Changeling and even the more recent Krampus are good examples of scary horror flicks that didn't need the graphicness of an R-Rating to be successful... and indeed, there are many more... but this was just wretched, the scene with the Scarecrow was the only good scene in the whole flick.

I love and cherish the 3 books on which this film was based... and this was just bad, the special effects (especially that thing that comes down the chimney) were an all-time low for Guillermo Del Toro.

Obviously I disliked this film... it should only appeal to pre-teens looking to have some laughs with friends... anyone else should avoid this dreck.

The one thing I did appreciate was they didn't try to adapt my favorite story... The Wendigo.

Great early giallo from the Godfather of Gore... be aware that there are multiple versions.
26 January 2022
To accurately review this film, it is essential that you see the full 103 minute version, which was the 2nd DVD released from Shriek Show... the 1st DVD release had a butchered 95 minute english language widescreen print and a longer Italian language version in low quality fullscreen... I have both copies, the 2nd one has the full version in widescreen with no bonus features while the 1st one has all the bonus features... so make sure you see the full 103 minute version.

If you like Fulci and/or Giallo films... this is a must.

Tarkovsky's final film is certainly a personal one... and personally, I didn't care much for it.
7 January 2022
First and foremost, I think Andrei Tarkovsky is one of the 10 greatest directors in film history... but he is certainly an acquired taste and many find his films just too boring and self-indulgent.

I love all 6 of his 7 feature films, but with this one I had to watch it over 3 sessions... even though it features the great Swedish actor Erland Josephson, this is not nearly on par with his great roles in Ingmar Bergman's films... it's incredibly pretentious in it's piousness... Tarkovsky was certainly influenced by his illness and imminent death, and he felt the need to portray a story where disaster can be averted by simply asking for forgiveness from God while surrendering a part of yourself.

I won't mention any plot elements, just watch it for yourself... even though it's lesser Tarkovsky... it's still Tarkovsky.

Not one of Amicus' better horror anthologies... but still very watchable.
21 December 2021
This film was played alot on TV in the 1980s and 1990s, especially in the U. K., so alot of love and adoration was poured on to this film during it's T. V. period... I myself watched this in my early teens in the 90's, and I remebered it more fondly but a recent view really changed my mind.

I personally rank this one as the 5th best Amicus horror anthology (not as good as "From Beyond The Grave", "Tales From The Crypt", "Dr. Terror's House Of Horrors" or "The House That Dripped Blood"... but better than "Vault Of Horror" or "Torture Garden"). Only the first story really being memorable, the others rank from mediocre to decent.

Overall, if you love just about every 'good' horror anthology (about 25 or so)... then this should be no exception... if you want to see the best of the non-British, non-American bunch... check out "Black Sabbath" from 1963, "Kwaidan" from 1965, "Spirits Of The Dead" from 1968, and "Three... Extremes" from 2005.

Still today, even though it is very dated... it's still very watchable, just don't expect to put it in the Top Class of horror anthologies.

I'd rather watch Red Sonja 20 times in a row before watching this 'dreck' again
10 December 2021
Go watch the original 'Conan The Barbarian' if you haven't already seen it, even 'Conan The Destroyer' is much better than this uninspired, pointless remake... glad to see this film lost money for the film company, otherwise we might have to endure a sequel of this truly awful film... even Jason Momoa couldn't save this from being absolutely terrible, he did such a good job in the first season of "Game Of Thrones" but it doesn't seem like he's even trying to act in this one... I guess he knew how bad this would turn out.

Before I saw this, I thought Red Sonja was bad... but "Red Sonja" is good in comparison to this dreck... I can't point out anything this remake did well.

A legendary figure in the history of film preservation gets a fine documentary
10 December 2021
Without this documentary, virtually nobody would remember this man... every cinephile in the world owes a great debt to this heroic figure.

Without Langlois, some absolute classics of film history would not be in existence... especially silent films, like Pastrone's "Cabiria", Wiene's "The Cabinet Of Dr. Caligari", Von Stroheim's "Greed" and Murnau's "Sunrise".

A well worth-while experience.

IMDB's rating of 1.8/10 is too generous
4 December 2021
There is nothing redeemable about this film... utter dreck... and this is coming from someone who likes Dwain Esper's "Maniac" and "Don't Go In The Woods"... so you'll believe me when I say to avoid this at all costs, unless you want to pass out from boredom... I would rate this a 0.1/10 if I could.

people giving this thing 10 stars is absolutely ridiculous... LOL
23 March 2021
This is not a good film at all... it has it's moments, when Naschy turns into the wolfman and bursts through the door of that house and attacks the 2 people inside was awesome!!... and the sets and atmosphere were better than expected.

But seriously... how the hell can people give this a perfect rating?!?... is this film really the 'ceiling' of film greatness for some people??... impossible

I've only seen the "Frankenstein's Bloody Terror" version, so maybe the original Spanish version is an improvement.

a true masterpiece by the French minimalist master
23 March 2021
I just have to laugh at the people who scored this any less than a 7... to those that did or would in the future... go watch Michael Bay's 'Transformers', I'm sure that's more to your tastes.

For lovers of 'World Cinema'... this is a masterpiece by one of the greatest French directors of all0time

would have been better without Jesse Eisenberg
21 March 2021
This movie was very entertaining... but Jesse Eisenberg is such an annoying person... I hesitate to use the term 'actor' because he can't act, he's the same whinny, arrogant, semi-intellectual, jewish stereotype in everything I've seen him in... sometimes it works like in 'The Social Network" and "The Squid And The Whale" but you just hope this guy dies to stop his goddamn voice from narrating... or at least I do.

All the other actors are fine... Woody Harrelson, Emma Stone and Abigail Breslin are fine actors... and it works as a horror comedy, as long as you're not expecting any scares.

The short running time of 88 minutes really works in it's favor as well

10 years before "Night And Fog"... and still superior
17 March 2021
Alain Resnais famed 1955 French documentary "Night And Fog" took the world by storm... many knew about the death camps in Poland, but few had ever seen the horror of the aftermath of the Holocaust... the dead bodies that were gassed or shot dead but not yet cremated or buried and the collection of shoes, human hair and clothing of the tens of thousands who were cremated was too horrific still for most to imagine in 1955...

Well this film was made by the legendary Billy Wilder 10 years prior, but seldom seen... and this film was more refined, more brutal and featured much more horrific footage then "Night And Fog"

This short 22 minute documentary is actually a truncated version of a documentary titled "German Concentration Camps Factual Survey" but the full 75 minute film would not be completed for another 70 years, losing much of it's potency in the time since.

I can imagine the reaction in 1945 when the war had just ended, judging by the reaction of 'Night And Fog', it would probably pass for a terrifying horror film

One of the best shows ever made... just slighty inferior to The Sopranos
17 March 2021
HBO once had the greatest shows in the history of television/PPV, it has gone far downhill as of late... this is one of the greatest of those and it's solid all the way through.

Breaking Bad (2008–2013)

Perhaps the best show on CABLE of all-time but doesn't match the best of HBO
17 March 2021
This is a very good show, don't get me wrong... but it's not on par with several HBO shows like "The Wire" or "The Sopranos"... or even "Boardwalk Empire"

The main problems I have are that many of the decisions made by the main characters are too illogical... the character arcs go up and down and don't feel realistic... Jesse is by far the worst, it feels like Walt should be alot smarter than he actually is... and the two sisters Marie and Skylar are infuriating.

Then other characters like Hank and Walter Jr. Are well written and feel so much more realistic... in fact that goes for everyone besides Walt, Jesse, Skylar and Marie... they go from inspiring sympathy to absolute hatred from episode to episode.

The best shows on HBO through the years relied on realism and well written characters and the quality difference is enormous from shows on AMC.

A good show, maybe the best show for a cable channel... but this doesn't compare to HBO.

Zombie (1979)

A true classic of the Zombie genre
4 March 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Haters can f' off... this is near the top of the Zombie genre... it isn't perfect, but the only Zombie films that are truly superior are Night Of The Living Dead and Dawn Of The Dead (the originals of course)... this film has the atmosphere, the gore and a steady plot... and the first zombie that bursts out of door on the ship was a great moment in history of zombie films.

On the downside... it takes awhile to get going, the shark fight was silly (why would a zombie retreat??, it's a mindless killing machine), and the molotov cocktail scene could've been handled better (c'mon, we can throw live firebombs at actors... it's Italy not America... did Italy even have safety precautions in those days??)

I loved that it paid tribute to "I Walked With A Zombie" with the voodoo origin, and the trance-like score and sound effects really add to the grim atmosphere.

I've seen dozens of Zombie films... some good, mostly bad... you can certainly do a lot worse than this

Largely misses the mark, some good gore but not scary at all
17 December 2019
Disappointing, but that's to be expected from a live-action adaptation of a video game.

The visuals are pretty good and a few good new ideas... but the "creep factor" is rather low and it's woefully inept at offering scares.

The climax scene in the church was pretty good though... Lovecraft inspired evisceration!!

Doesn't come close to living up to it's potential
15 December 2019
Warning: Spoilers
The idea of this film seems like it's completely original... an otherworldly realm to be explored and survived on it's search for the truth behind it's existence... I'm assuming there are earlier films with similar plots (seems like there has to be), but I can't really recall any quite like this.

This film had a lot going for it, the director did the understatedly clever "Ex Machina" prior to this, a mega-budget this time around and a pretty decent cast with the always reliable Jennifer Jason Leigh as a co-star... but the ideas failed to be as riveting as they could have been, continuity errors and really, really stupid decision making (why did they only "blackout" at the beginning?... would've been much better if the memory loss was reoccurring, and "why would they post someone at guard at ground level when they could be guarding the stairwell to the ladder from above??... idiotic, and some of them are supposed to be smart)

The "action scenes" obviously had a lot of $$ put into them, and tremendous CGI quality for the special effects... but the plot was severely lacking with the aforementioned continuity errors... it doesn't make the most out of it's opportunities... it wasn't scary at all and the ending (although again, special effects are great) was just dumb and pretentious, doesn't seem to flow well and ideas just seem trite.

Too bad, it could have been great... it really goes to show that these Hollywood 'mega-productions' rarely seem to get it right.

Early Ford talkie ruined by missing footage/soundtrack
15 December 2019
Unfortunately, the only print of this film that survives is missing quite a bit of 1-2 second frames and soundtrack continuity errors... I have the "Ford At Fox" Region 1 DVD, and I believe this is the only print known to exist... A warning comes before the film starts saying something like "Taken From The Best Available Sources"... dialogue is frequently interrupted by abrupt lapses and spoken words cut off in mid-sentence...

It almost makes the film too frustrating to finish... it's worth sitting through anyways for Spencer Tracy and Warren Hymer's performances, and to see an early supporting role for Humphrey Bogart, but "Bogey's" performance is largely forgettable... and Claire Luce is utterly wooden as the object of "Bogey's" affection.

It's hard to recommend this film otherwise... unless you are a John Ford completest.

One of the better 'Peplums'
14 December 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Obviously not as good as the 1963 American film "Jason And The Argonauts", but one of the better and more interesting Italian peplums... it offers a different set of occurrences on Jason's (and his mates, including Hercules) quest to retrieve the golden fleece from an obscure Greek island.

It gets a little sidetracked in the middle section, probably the weakest part of the film is the 2/3 section of the film... but picks up again with the retrieval of the golden fleece... a pretty nice scale up a giant Greek statue.

The quality of these films is never going to match certain American productions of the same nature... but Italy did churn out quite a few of these films... and a select handful of them are pretty good... this being one of them.

Another pretty decent peplum which offers yet another quest for the golden fleece was the earlier 1958's "Hercules"... with awesome special effects from the legendary Mario Bava... however, I prefer "Giants Of Thessaly" to that film.

Overall, not the greatest peplum ever made... but in the Top 1/3rd of the genre.

A truly underrated French horror flick... unrated version is essential!!
14 December 2019
I won't ruin the film by discussing anything other than how important it is to watch the "unrated" version of this film... although this version doesn't change the plot at all, the main reason to watch films such as this is the gore/violence... which is mostly omitted in "The Evil Within", which is the R-Rated North American version which appeared on VHS.

I don't believe that this film has been reissued in it's "unrated version" in North America... making the Anchor Bay DVD that much more rare... if you are lucky (like I am) enough to own or have access to this version... hold on to it, and enjoy the visceral carnage!!

I was expecting more but I expected too much
14 December 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I really wanted to like this... I know this was released as part of the Criterion Collection in a set with 3 other late 60's Shochiku sci-fi/horror titles... and Criterion is my favourite DVD/Blu Ray company.

The "Eclipse" series is a really "mixed bag", I find... some sets are great, others not so much... judging by the IMDB ratings on the other 3 films in the set, this was supposed to be 1 of the good 2, with the other 2 being terrible... but I didn't think much of this one... maybe "The Living Skeleton" is better?... I don't know... but obviously, the Japanese were not cut out for low-budget sci-fi films.

It just wasn't interesting... and quite pathetic in other areas... protagonists trying to escape from the "alien" are suddenly confronted with an "avalanche" of rocks... out of nowhere!!... and this happens more than once... LOL

I find the "Mr. Mano" character to be the most interesting, a common character in Japanese film... a selfish jerk who will sacrifice friend and foe alike to save his own hide... of course, characters like this must meet a gruesome end in films like these.

A few kudos go as well to a very serviceable "score"... creepy and effective.

Bizarre J-horror suceeds in some areas... fails in others
14 December 2019
I gotta praise the atmosphere of this film, it's a totally unnerving experience... though it doesn't make a whole lotta sense (I watch a lot of Lucio Fulci, so I'm used to that), the gruesome nature of the film is enough to make those who aren't used to it sick to the stomach... but that's sort of the point.

6/10

For those that aren't aware, this film is not a sequel to the original Evil Dead Trap... I'm guessing the producers saw the final cut, were perplexed and decided to use the success of "Evil Dead Trap" to sell the film to distributors more easily (and perhaps to sell the audience the misleading idea of a sequel)...

It tries to tie into "Evil Dead Trap" by using a creepy child, who seems more like a ghost, appear from time to time and is named "Hideki" (an obvious nod to Evil Dead Trap) and seems to be able to possess the 3 main characters at different times in the film... at least that seems to be the case

It tries hard (and almost succeeds) to be one of those films that constantly hold you in a state of "shock and disgust" (films that succeed at this are: Andrzej Zulawski's "Possession", and Pascal Laugier's "Martyrs" (unrated of course))... however, the non-gore scenes which make up a large part of the film don't hold the viewer in that rare state of "glued to the screen watching something truly abhorrent and riveting"... and it's truly confusing at times.

Gore hounds of Fulci and others like him will find a lot to like in "Hideki"... but not for "beginners" in horror... and especially, not for the faint of heart.

Better than average Canadian horror flick
13 December 2019
This is a pretty decent horror flick from the freezing north (Canada, where I'm from)... Canada actually released a few good/great horror flicks in the 70s and 80s (good being the likes of "Prom Night" and "Terror Train"... great being "Black Christmas")... this one was always trashed for being "too dark to see what's going on" on the Beta/VHS, so to see this film properly you have to see the "Scorpion DVD or Blu Ray" version which drastically enhances the picture... lots of bad reviews of this film on IMDB are based on the "very hard to see what's going on" VHS version, so it would be interesting to see what IMDB score this film would have if it were solely based on the enhanced version.

DVD/Blu Ray also has footage that was cut from said VHS version, which is a definite bonus if you like this film... otherwise, it doesn't make the film much better for those who don't like this sort of thing.

Simply overrated
11 December 2019
The formulaic nature of the film ruined it... the original idea by Bruce Lee for the sadly unfinished "Game Of Death" of levels/layers to advance through would have worked well for that film (luckily, the outtakes were salvaged) and formed the widely used format of video games for waves/levels... but it doesn't work in this film... unless that's your "bag", certainly not my idea for progressing through a serious film

Also has lots of plot holes and inconsistencies... seemed like an action film for 13 year olds.

Also, this is one of the very few weak performances from the terrific Tilda Swinton... she did her best with the awful role, I suppose

Check your brain at the door
