Hideous Kinky (1998)
I found it enjoyable
18 May 2003
I really don't understand all the negative feedback about this movie. It's about an English woman who takes her two young daughters to Morocco in a search for the meaning of life. "Julia" is guileless and careless, exposes her children to dangerous situations and people, gets a boyfriend who is a street entertainer and has been in trouble with the law. She wanders here and there, ultimately not really discovering anything at all. The little girls are good actors, and the film is as much about their reaction to this life as it is the mother's vain spiritual quest. The older child just wants to be "normal," and they both try to find a father figure in the boyfriend, who is kind to them, but comes in and out of their lives. I enjoyed all their characters and was interested throughout the film. It is very beautiful to look at and Kate Winslet is gorgeous as always. There is a nude scene in the beginning - I am starting to think she loves them. It is very much a drama, and will probably bore most guys, but I would think most women would enjoy it and appreciate it. Despite the situation, the mother and children really love each other and their interplay is interesting to see.

Great film
2 May 2003
I have seen this film probably 5 or 6 times, but only lately discovered that it was based on a novel by Theodore Dreiser, based on a true life murder case in 1906.

Basically, it's about a social climber who has gotten a girlfriend pregnant and comes under the charms of a wealthy, beautiful young woman and needs to free himself.

I have always been riveted by Clift, and in this movie he does his best to be the man who is torn between two women.

I really have to hand it Shelley Winters as the woman that is desperate to be married and truly loves the Clift character. Usually I see her in movies where she is dominant and demanding, but in this movie she is weak and desperate. I never regarded her as a sensitive actress, but she does very well in this role, It's amazing to me.

As others have said, Elizabeth Taylor has never looked so good, she absolutely glows in this movie, she has never hooked so beautiful!! An absolute goddess, you really can't get enough of her beauty.

I would recommend this to fans of romance and film-noir. A very involving and tense but enjoyable movie experience.

Totally cute and sends a message
26 April 2003
Reese Witherspoon is my favorite actress under the age of 30 and I tremendously enjoy all her movies. In this one she's a girlie girl with a strong belief in herself and her ability to win a boyfriend she lost back by getting admitted to Harvard, his school, as a law student, because she thinks he wants a "serious" girl.

And she manages against all odds to become that girl, even becoming more than she thought she could ever be. Fantastic supporting cast, especially the gal who is her manicurist and sympathizes with her situation.

Funny, light-hearted, great script - I have known sci-fi and action movie people to even like this great movie. Since I like Reese and love comedy, I will give it 10 out of 10 stars

Pretty Funny!
15 January 2003
For all those people who trashed this movie,"What were you expecting, an Oscar-worthy film?" I saw it for the second time last night and I still think it's pretty funny in a very goofy kind of way. It sort of reminded me of "Dumb and Dumber," a movie people seem to love or hate. It's the completely inane story of a couple of horny potheads who wake up after partying and try to put together the events of the night before, with alot of surprises along the way. Just relax and enjoy the stupidity.

It held my interest
29 October 2002
I am not a big Sandra Bullock fan, I just like thrillers, and I picked this rental up for lack of anything else I wanted to see. I was surprised that I was captivated by it in a morbid way.

It's about a couple of bored teenage boys - one very bright, one very rich and popular, who have a secret friendship, and decide to commit the "perfect murder." They kill an innocent woman chosen randomly, and leave "clues" to point the cops in the direction of another innocent person. After the case is wrapped up and the "murderer" commits suicide, they think they are home free and become careless in their conversations with Bullock, the cop who has a nagging feeling they are involved and continues to investigate them.

I did not much care for Bullock's character, she has a chip on her shoulder and personal problems I didn't care about at all. I thought the best part of this movie was the young actors who played "Richard" the "Justin." I thought they were very good at portraying a young man who only cares for himself, and a young man who only wants to be as strong as his friend and please him.

I was surprised at the ending the first time, but watching it a second time I saw things that I missed that should have led me to that conclusion. I thought it engrossing and chilling, and I think it definitely is worth a rental.

I already knew the secret
4 October 2002
I just finished watching "The Crying Game" again for about the fifth time. I saw it about 10 years ago after someone had told me all about it. I deliberately took a friend to see it in the theater to see her reaction. And her reaction was "Well, I thought "she" was sort of attractive but they could have got someone better" until she realized the truth, and then was somewhat in a state of disbelief.

Alot of things appeal to me about this film - the true friendship with Fergus and Jody, the enchanting accents, the humor, although it is very, very dry.

I think it is quite witty in dialogue, has enough drama and action to satisfy alot of people. It will either totally involve you or leave you cold, I think.

It is a thoughtful, strange movie by Neil Jordan, whose movies I never fail to enjoy.

I think I would have to call it the strangest "love story" one could imagine. Certainly most unusual and not forgettable at all. 9 out of 10 stars.

The Anna Nicole Show (2002–2004)
Different and sort of entertaining
16 September 2002
I've seen most episodes of the "The Anna Nicole Show" and I think it's trashy, dumb, and entertaining. It's appeal to me is that it's about a woman who has absolutely nothing to do but wait on her money from her deceased ex-husband, while she concentrates on daily chores like going to the dentist(how TRAUMATIC!),decorate her home to her own "foo foo" tastes with an interior decorator who sucks up to her, and order her ever-present assistant and attorney around. The last show I saw Anna and crew needed a break from things so badly they traveled to Las Vegas for gambling, strippers, drinking, and food. Anna and her attorney, Howard K. Stern, were getting wild, cuddling with the strippers and rubbing all over each other. Even at a buffet,(she was hungry after all that activity) Anna does not serve herself - her attorney and assistant guess what she wants, and then are surprised that Anna wanted something healthy like a salad and forgot to get it. She still has a beautiful face, and has gotten quite heavy, but it seems to not bother her unless someone brings it up - she is happy to run around in belly shirts and exotic/revealing clothing. As long as she's happy, everything is fine. She's got a short temper, the patience of a 5 year old, and goes from speaking clearly to sounding like she is spaced out on something. It takes all kinds I guess, and she certainly is one of a kind. She is outrageous, to say the least. I think it's kind of entertaining to watch, really. I can't wait for the next episode where Anna takes her pooch, "Sugar Pie" to a pet psychic!

I thought it good, memorable film noir
22 August 2002
Warning: Spoilers
I have never seen "La Chienne," the movie that others say this is based on. I can only say what of think of this film. I thought this film was interesting and sad, and I have seen it several times and enjoy it every time.

"Kitty" and "Johnny" are con artists who dupe a middle-aged lonely man into loving Kitty, who's a lazy whore. Robinson has a painting hobby that has never gone anywhere, and he criticizes his own work for lacking "perspective." But he's happy to show Kitty his work, pretending he is a successful artist.

I have always liked Edward G. Robinson, in every role I have ever seen him in. In this film, he is married to an old, mean wretch of a woman, his job is really at a bank as a clerk, and when a younger, beautiful Joan Bennett pretends to be in love with him, he does everything he can to keep that love, even if it means going against the law to satisfy her demands for money.

In turn, the woman "Kitty" and her boyfriend, start showing his artwork using her name, and amazingly, she is a sensation. He ultimately finds this out, and even so, only wants her love, and she turns on him harshly, saying she never cared for him, making fun of him, and crushes his heart. He goes berserk, and winds up lonely, haunted by the beauty he thought loved him.

I thought this film was great film noir, and I enjoyed all the characters. Dan Duryea is at his best as a total piece of slime, Joan is a cruel, lazy beauty, and Robinson is just great in his role as a lonely, desperate man who only wants to be loved and admired.

Interesting but a little strange
19 August 2002
Warning: Spoilers
**Possible Spoilers**

I rented this from Blockbusters out of the "comedy" section, and I didn't find it funny at all. Rather, it is different stories of the lives of women very loosely connected who seem to be searching for happiness.

I appreciate it for looking realistically at the basically not-so-happy lives of 5 or so different women. I thought it might be one of those star-studded flops, but it wasn't. I thought it thought-provoking and interesting.

My favorite part was Holly Hunter's, she develops a casual relationship with a crazy, insulting homeless woman - but instead of turning away from it, she is interested in what the woman says to her despite her insults. The homeless woman is not that off about her life, and she starts wondering about herself and what she is really about. Other parts that were interesting were Calista Flockhart's relationship with her dying female lover, and Kathy Baker's romantic interest in a man who has moved in across the street who is a dwarf.

It is a strange and fairly slow-moving movie, but it held my interest. It also held the interest of my boyfriend, who normally will only watch action and sci-fi.

This movie may not appeal to alot of people, but it may to people who enjoy good acting and character studies.

I give it 7 out of 10 stars.

Hypnotic for lovers of drama, romance, and history
2 August 2002
I first saw this BBC production at 13 in 1971, and was simply fascinated. I have seen it several times since, and it's always fresh and interesting to watch. Keith Mitchell is excellent as Henry VIII, and I found no fault with the acting or history of the series. Well-cast, well-acted. I must say that my favorite episodes were Dorothy Tutin as Anne Boleyn and the very unfortunate young Katherine Howard, played by Angela Pleasence. I was surprised that she is the daughter of of Donald Pleasance. All of the episodes are outstanding, and are educational as well. Keith Mitchell plays Henry the VIII with all the conceited, bombastic, loving, hating and self-indulging qualities that history describes him as having. A must-see for lovers of drama, romance, and English History. 10 out of 10 stars easily.

Election (1999)
Reese Shines!
13 July 2002
I once read in a magazine article that while growing up, Reese Witherspoon's dad, who is a psychologist, used to call her "Little Miss Type A." I think that her role as Tracey in this film brings out alot of her own personality.

She is running for president of her class, and certain that she will acheive it. As the highest achieving student in senior high - she's been in every club and the president of everything possible. She manages to incense one of her teachers, played by Matthew Broderick. He's lost his best friend due to her intellectual attachment that turned sexual to his former best friend and teacher at the school, and is irritated at her rabid go-getter attitude and the sense that she feels better and more deserving than anyone else. He wants to bring her down, and enlists a very popular student who was the school's best athlete to do so.

I really am not a fan of Broderick, but he does alright here as a caring teacher who wants fair play. The innocent boy he enlists win, but only by a vote, because Broderick has thrown a couple of ballots away which would have made Tracey the winner.

This movie is FUNNY, due to Witherspoon's intense competetive Tracey, who CANNOT accept defeat, and the things that ensue after she is found to be the winner after all.

There are other stories going on, a lesbian affair by the popular boy's sister that turns out miserably, with her moping and strange thoughts, Brodericks unfaithfulness to his wife, and believe it or not there is the driest humor and wit in these stories as well as in the main one.

I thought this the only good teenage film worth watching at all besides "Clueless" in the past decade.

As the so very aggresive and positive Tracey, Witherspoon shined. A perfect performance by so many, and comedy I enjoy watching over and over, this movie really deserves a 10 in the genre of black comedy. Loved it!

How Sorry!!!
13 July 2002
From looking at other's comment's, I feel that I must lack a true appreciation of lousy movies! My boyfriend who is pretty weird himself about horror and sci-fi left this for me to watch this weekend. He thought it was well-written and oh so funny!

I totally disagree, and I do enjoy many horror films, such as "The Shining," "Rosemary's Baby," and even the low budget "Blair Witch Project." Apparently my boyfriend is too easily amused.

This movie is about a bunch of hippie/actors? who decide through Satanic rituals to conjure up the dead in a graveyard. First the lame leader of the group tries, then another one is performed by one of the women in the group who actually did look and sound a little scary.

For some unknown reason they drag one corpse into a nearby house and dress him in bridal attire and have a wedding of some kind. They talk to him, make fun of him. How freakin stupid.

After a while of playing with "Orville" the corpse, the dead start arising out of their graves and coming towards the house, terrifying the group.

I didn't find it even enjoyably campy, just awful. The acting was awful, the lines were awful. It must have cost them a whole $2500.00 to make this piece of garbage.

I have always heard that Ed Wood's movies were the worst, but "Plan Nine from Outer Space" was just so bad it WAS funny. Was this movie trying to be so bad it was funny? Or was it seriously trying to make me scared? It fails in all respects. I give it a minus 2 out of 10 stars.

Lolita (1997)
I thought the older one better
3 July 2002
I have not viewed comments from other viewers, I am just going to say what I thought. My boyfriend and I rented this version last weekend, with us both having seen the original and him having read the book.

I'm sorry, but I liked the original cast better, with James Mason, Sue lyon, and Shelley Winters. I felt they were all better cast. I love Melanie Griffith and Jeremy Irons, but I find them much better in other roles. Dominique Swain does quite well as the teasing, not-so-innocent bratty lover of a much older man, but I just thought Sue was better, at acting bored and acting bratty.

This film was prettier, slightly more explicit, and was more tiring to me. Plus the Peter Seller's role of Quilty is hardly there, and not as much a presence in this film as in the original. And I thought that character was a menacing character that was important.

If you can only rent one of these, then rent the 60s version. If you can, see both and compare. 7 out of 10 stars.

Passions (1999–2008)
A Fun and Addictive Escape
1 July 2002
"Passions" is part soap, part supernatural and very campy and odd. I don't think I have ever watched a soap quite like it.

It revolves around a hispanic family, a black family, a middle class white family, and the wealthy Crane family, and neighbor of the middle class white family who is actually a centuries old witch, named Tabitha (played by Juliet Mills) and her squeaky-voiced little familiar/companion, Timmy.

It is hard to take seriously, the plots are outlandish, and just about anything that can happen will, and beyond that. It's just plain funny with it's campy writing played so seriously by the actors.

Give it a chance - it's amusing, with alot of gorgeous actors, and some characters so evil you can't believe it. It mostly takes place in a town called "Harmony," of all things.

My only real complaint about the show is that it is extremely slow-moving, as others have complained. They can hang on a storyline for months, going nowhere. I think that if it were a little faster moving that it would greatly improve the show and increase viewer watching.

If you have nothing else to do, give it a chance. If you really like it you can tape it like me. It's nothing but a silly, campy escape with beautiful people.

One of the best ones
26 June 2002
My birthday present at 8 was to go to dinner with my parents and then go to see GWTW, which had been re-released on the big screen. As an 8 year old, I found the story a little hard to understand - I was bewildered by people laughing when I thought they should have been mad or sad, and really the only person I related to was Scarlett's child Bonnie. I thought it so sad when she died and also when Melanie died.

In my early teens I checked the book out 3 times or so from the library, I was fascinated by it. The beautiful and involving writing of Margaret Mitchell made me think it the best book ever. I still keep it on my bedside stand, I can pick it up and open to any page and read till I feel sleepy.

I think that the movie got the main points of the book - it would have actually made a good mini-series rather than a four hour movie, but I don't think they did mini-series in the 30s.

I think everyone knows that it is a historical movie about the Civil War involving a spoiled beauty, a plain, gracious woman, a man that is weak and indecisive, and a charming, masculine rogue.

The movie is very well-acted and lovely to look at. The costumes and sets are great.

My favorite person both in the book and the film is Melanie. What an impossibly unselfish, kind, sweet, good woman. Olivia de Havilland was so very good in her role as Melanie. She is the essence of kindness, and the beautiful Scarlett is selfish, greedy and mean. Melanie acutally was more beautiful to me. Even Rhett says, after she died - "She was the only completely kind person I ever knew."

Great performances down to the smallest parts, you won't ever forget this movie.

And the Sea Will Tell (1991 TV Movie)
Still I Wonder
25 June 2002
This made for TV movie is based on one of my favorite books, by the same name, and out of all the true crime books I have ever read, I still feel at odds as to whether the person being tried was guilty of murder or assisting a murderer or not.

As other people have already said, it is a story of two very different couples who sailed to an island looking for adventure/escape. The younger couple consists of a hard man in his 30s running from the law, and a girl in her late 20s, who is totally dedicated to aiding his escape and usually going along with whatever he wanted. The older couple are in their 40s, upper middle class, attractive, and their yacht, the "Sea Wind" is a marvel, designed for a couple who would want to exist very comfortably for long periods at different ports.

The younger couple were annoying to the older couple, lacking in supplies and begging at times, always needy. They brought along annoying dogs, were always running out of supplies. Although the older man Mac is not fearful of them, the woman really is, and desperate to leave. They have quite a few clashes, despite Jennifer's(the younger woman)attempts to make peace and be friends.

Then one day Buck, the younger man, tells Jennifer that the older couple have "disappeared" - he thinks they got lost fishing and are gone. According to Jennifer, she was not with him the whole day and heard nothing. They sail back to Hawaii on the "Sea Wind assuming they are dead, and are eventually arrested.

The rest of the movie revolves around Jennifer - was she an innocent who believed her boyfriend's Buck's story and heard nothing, or was she a part of the murders, or an assistant? The character Jennifer is very baffling, lying to achieve certain desires and totally truthful in other areas. Even acting at times like she didn't care what her attorney Bugliosi did or didn't do. She is a complex character, sentimental but sensible, wonderful at chess but deluded in judging character.

So did Jennifer help commit these murders or know about them? Read the book/watch the movie. I still can't figure it out.

I wish this were on video, so I could see it again. I thought it was well-cast with Richard Crenna as Bugliosi, James Garner and Deidre Hall play the older couple, and Hart Bochner and Rachel Ward play Buck and Jennifer. The only problem I have is that I didn't think Ward was quite right for the cuddly, spacy, cautious Jennifer. I don't know who I would liked to see cast, but is was not her.

All in all, a 9 out of 10.

Well-acted but depressing
19 June 2002
I rented this movie after a hard day's work, and was expecting a serious drama, but I found this movie just so depressing. There are no moments of levity or humor in it, which I do think is a part of life. No question about it being well-acted - I even thought Sean Comb's portrayal of of a man about to be executed was very, very good. It certainly is brave in it's look at racial issues and has unadulterated honest performances from everyone. Strong character portrayls from everyone that are hard to forget very soon, but just NOT enjoyable, and I even expect that from dramas.
