Doesn't get any more real than this
2 March 2018
Warning: Spoilers
I have put off watching this movie for ages as I just didn't think it would appeal to me. My close friends and brother have all being telling me to watch this film so here I am. This is powerful stuff and I mean POWERFUL STUFF. This is just so true to life. This is government BS gone nuts. This film is put together and devised by somebody who has clearly been through all this and has first hand knowledge of all the front line bureaucracy that is soul destroying. I have worked in the Employment service and have always worked as a civil servant. This film is perfect and sums up exactly how life runs. Simple story a carpenter has a heart attack and is told he can't work by his doctor but is then told he can work by the "health professional appointed by the govermnment". All the online computer stuff (some of which I struggle with and I know computers). The endless forms to fill in and endless waiting on the phone is just so true to life.

The whole film is simply one normal bloke trying to get employment and going through a benefit system etc that is not designed to help or make life easy.

I'm not going into all the details but the scene in the food bank just had me in tears. You need to watch this film. Absolute travesty that this film didn't win every oscar going. Terrific movie.

Logan (2017)
10/10
This is what we've been waiting for.........
4 March 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Not that I'm saying I didn't rate all the little in jokes so far in the xmen movies but this is different. We have moved away from the easy going special effect laden good guys wear xmen outfits and save the day.

This is nasty, violent, bloody and frequent use of strong language. The scene is set in the future, there have been no mutants born in 25 years, Logan is looking old and is visibly limping and clearly ill and tired. He's also not healing like he used to (Hugh Jackman brilliant as the troubled antihero as always). Professor Xavier (a brilliant Patrick Stewart) who is barely a shell of himself, stripped of his suits and having to take high doses of meds to control his abilities. The plan is simple, Logan is working as a chauffeur (yes really), is caring for Professor Xavierwith a former mutant hunter and is trying to save up money to escape and get all three of them away from everybody. Then he encounters a team of mutant bounty hunters and a young girl who is very much like him, but she is being hunted. Best advice, hold on and don't be scared of a bit gore. This is very much in your face camera not panning away violence. A 15 certificate in the UK and deservedly so.

As I stated earlier this is not called x men part whatever, this is as Logan should be. A tour de force and a brilliant movie.

Also nothing extra at the end credits at all.

Just doesn't work
16 July 2016
Warning: Spoilers
I decided I love the originals so I'm going to give this a go. I have lost out in the past by reading reviews and avoiding movies which as it turned out later I have really enjoyed. I don't actually really know where to start here.......

1, The cast just doesn't work and the script which I think is supposed to be funny just isn't. I heard about 6 kids laughing at a couple of funny parts (they were all borderline 12). That was it. I genuinely tried to enjoy this mess(sorry movie) and I literally didn't laugh at all.

2, You have three scientists and a street smart (token) black woman who shouts and screams at everything to make things funny (doesn't work in fact I came out with a bad head). There is just no chemistry there. Also the four are friends in about 2 seconds, Im also not naming characters. No point. 3, The special effects were on a par with a scooby do movie and the budget looked about the same. Plus the "ghosts" just look cheap CGI and I got bored with the predictable "slime" the same ghost buster repeatedly routine. 4, They go from no money to suddenly having amazing expensive and well put together kit. 5, Chris Hemsworth plays the receptionist, and this is the major criticism. He is literally so stupid and brainless (as are all the male cast) it's beyond sexist. He is actually the saving grace because he is quite funny despite the major character flaws. Slimer makes a cameo as do the remaining original ghost busters (minus Harold Ramis R.I.P and Ric Moranis who retired). I did try guys but the film is let down by a very weak script and director. I go into any movie and try to enjoy it on its merits but this mess had me shaking my head and contemplating why I had wasted 2 hours of my life.

Don't bother
11 June 2016
This is a movie which I actually was worried by the trailer. It looked rubbish. Finally watched this and oh my it fails badly and its 2 hours 7 minutes of my life I will never get back. I can see why it bombed. This looks cheap and tacky and I ended up half reading and watching this movie This is a real "Alan Smithee" movie if ever I saw one. I know that I have to write more and to be honest I'm struggling. The special effects are dire the acting is worse. Having all white cast where blatantly they wouldn't/couldn't be. It actually reminds me of an episode of stargate SG1 where they ran out of budget and ideas. And apparently this is meant to have a sequel. Worrying.

I walked away a bit let down to be honest
25 March 2016
Warning: Spoilers
I don't know maybe I was expecting too much. I hands up confess I am not a massive fan of DC comics. But I have dipped in to Superman and Batman story arcs over the years. Simply put the film is way too long (2 hours 40 minutes) and for me it really seemed to drag. The story is simple, All is cosy and then Superman turns up with the kryptonians and General Zod etc (the film follows directly on from Man of Steel which I enjoyed) Essentially you see Batman having a certain distrust towards Superman and basically thinks he's a killer (all of this is orchestrated by Lex Luthor of course) and he essentially wants the Dark Knight and the last son of Krypton to do battle. It happens but takes most of the film to get there. Also Doomsday turns up but it is spliced from General Zod and Lex's blood. Lots of CGI (some of it terrible, you'll see). Also a small cameo for Wonder Woman amongst others who is barely used at all. I just think for what they spent on this movie it could have had more story and substance and been better. I'm going to sound like a hypocrite here but I am going to see this again with one of my best friends and see if maybe I enjoy it more this time around. Like I said I felt a bit let down.

No to be honest I still found this a little (lot) dragged out, and I still felt very unsatisfied by the whole experience. This movie will probably make it's money back simply because there is no competition now (no Star Wars etc) but the box office takings according to the online press have nose dived a drastic amount after the opening weekend. I'm trying not to be a nay sayer and doom and gloom here because i love and watch all types of movies but this one just feels over hyped.

Abrams nails it the force is strong with this one
19 December 2015
Warning: Spoilers
I'm not ashamed to admit it I'm a massive fan and have been all my life. I was disappointed with the prequels so when I heard this was being made I was feeling a little hopeful.

This is essentially a case of the events in the originals have been forgotten and the Galactic Empire has been replaced by the First Order (same evil intentions). Luke Skywalker etc are all myth and legends and are largely forgotten about. Enter Kylo Ren a former Knight of the Order of Ren (think Sith Lord) and and his stormtroopers who are trying to hunt down a certain Last of the Jedi Knight called Luke Skywalker who has apparently been in hiding for years and just vanished.

Throw into the mixer the original heroes such as Leia, Han Chewbacca with C3PO and R2D2, along with some new blood in Rey (a scavenger who is force sensitive and not too bad with a lighsabre) Finn (a stormtrooper who runs as he won't kill for the First Order) and Po who is the best pilot in the resistance.

I'm missing a lot out here but it is deliberate as there is too much for me to go in depth about.

Taken 3 (2014)
4/10
weakest of the lot, shame too
13 January 2015
Warning: Spoilers
I love the first two movies and was so looking forward to this being released. So much so I got out of my sick bed and journeyed to the cinema. Okay here's the plot. Bryan Mills gets framed for his ex wife's murder. That's it. Nobody is taken. Liam Neeson is clearly tired of this franchise and is obviously in this for the money. The plot is none existent and boring, the action sequences (what there are of them) resemble a schoolyard scuffle and the camera work is so bad it's difficult to follow without going dizzy. There are a number of car chases but even they are nothing spectacular I'm afraid, certainly compared to the first movies. Also forget gun play (the director did). Or even blood effects. Simply put this movie has gone from a decent 15 to a dire 12A or PG13. its almost a U quite honestly. There are a few laughable moments............They're not supposed to be. As far as the actors are concerned. Nobody has enough to do or a script to shine with. It's a shame because I am a fan of this genre and I love the first two movies.

Cyborg (1989)
10/10
I love this world
24 September 2014
Warning: Spoilers
sorry I have to give this movie the max score because it is simply put one of my favourites of all time. It was the first DVD I bought when my parents bought me my first ever DVD player.

Simply put world has been ravaged by a plague and the last remaining scientists commission a cyborg to journey to New York and retrieve data from a computer and then try to return it to Atlanta (no internet I guess??). Obviously Fender and his flesh pirates get in the way, although I confess I always wondered how Pearl Prophets bodyguard who is armed to the teeth, manages to lose his machine gun with grenade launcher. You don't see this used at any point by the way. Enter Mr Van Damme who plays a Slinger (mercenary for hire) and sets out on a personal vendetta to try and kill Fender. Now there are holes a plenty (van damme loses his sword very quickly, no reason really given). The pirates have guns that seem to fire a ball bearing of some type (as does he) but no gunpowder etc.

What I love about this movie is that there are so many scenes that showcase Van Dammes kicking prowess, and the entire movie for the budget is actually quite well put together. Now bare in mind that the production crew had limited budget and this film made in excess of 10,000000 dollars on a 500,000 dollar budget. Not bad. This is one of the movies which actually got me interested in martial arts (now a journey) and is up there with IP Man 1 and 2 as well as Enter The Dragon. Albert Pyun directed this movie and he is a very talented guy who I think could make Avengers for a 1000 dollars.

sorry not funny
13 September 2014
Warning: Spoilers
I really tried to enjoy this movie, then again I tend to be one of the few who doesn't find Ant & Dec funny which is unforgivable for a Geordie apparently. I missed this at the cinema so tried to watch it on Sky, I don't know maybe I'm just not into this kind of humour but I enjoyed Elf and Stepbrothers both Will Ferell movies. Simply put this movie is unfunny, they've taken the humour of the last one and recycled it. This time however it just didn't work. There's a point in the movie where being blind is the "funny bit" so to speak, I am blind and am never afraid to rip jokes out of myself. I simply found this section of the film unfunny, boring, pointless and to a degree quite offensive. Then again maybe it's just me being oversensitive. Just avoid this film at all costs. Honestly I had to stop and start watching this movie about a dozen times over a week. Painful but at least I didn't go to the cinema to see it.

The Raid 2 (2014)
10/10
and I thought the Raid was brilliant
12 April 2014
Warning: Spoilers
In simple terms this movie takes place 2 hours after the original. Our hero is basically told he has found one little fish and the police want him to go very undercover and weed out the bigger fish. That's essentially the story where Rama is tasked with befriending the big boss's son who is in prison. One of the things I love about this movie is the director appreciates the talent he has available and he uses it. I can picture his direction being "right you know what you can do, have fun and I'll roll the camera and let you guys do your stuff". Simply put that would have worked. There is yet again a lot of brilliant martial arts in this movie, very little gun play compared to the first one, quite honestly this could be a stand alone film. The story is different to the raid but is still great. Only criticism I would consider is that the films a bit long but I did enjoy it so didn't really care. A word of warning this is not a martial arts movie you get the kids to watch it is very brutal the action looks very bloody and the weapon work is very realistic/close quarter. This movie makes a lot of 18 rated films look tame. Enjoy it and if you study martial arts you will love it

I love this show
8 February 2014
Warning: Spoilers
Its interesting I read a lot of negative reviews about this show. Some saying its like the Waltons or too sugary sweet. Also the good guys always win etc etc. I started watching this because of Tom Selleck and I have to admit I was hooked immediately. Yes the Reagans have a knack of always winning and it does remind me of the Waltons but who cares? I love watching the idea of a family of cops agreeing and arguing having family feuds (what family doesn't?). To me this is well acted escapism that is easy going and easy to watch. Sit watch and enjoy when you don't want to have to think too much. Also you get a great none tourists view of New York.

too slow
4 August 2013
Warning: Spoilers
First of all I am a massive drive fan and also a Ryan Gosling fan. Unintentionally followed his career for years going right back to Young Hercules. Anyways here's the story. brother is killed and mother comes to Bangkok and asks her other son to avenge the death. There you go I just saved you whatever the entry fee is. The problem I had with the movie is just that it is too slow and thats it. Plus you really don't care about the characters they are all nasty uncaring and quite frankly you don't want to be best buddies with any of them. My main issue with the film is that I don't think the actors were given enough to do. They all did well with what they had but I think David Lynch directing may have worked better. Billy as a character is drug dealing and has a thing for raping and killing young girls teens or younger it seams. Crystal his loving mother is basically a drugs kingpin in the States and again doesn't bat an eyelid when she hears what her eldest loving son did. Julian the youngest again is a drug dealer etc who also owns/runs a boxing gym. Now I read somewhere that Ryan Gosling studied Thai Boxing for a while to prepare for the role. When he does have a fight, he is like a white belt versus a black-belt. Trust me folks this is no fight. To say he gets beaten is putting things politely. Now I can see this movie being regarded as a classic but I must admit I found it a little hard to watch at times. Saving grace the fantastic soundtrack. It wouldn't work otherwise. I'd say enjoy but I don't honestly know how many people will enjoy this movie.

After Earth (2013)

doesn't work
26 June 2013
Warning: Spoilers
I go into most films with an open mind simply because every time a critic recommends a movie and I dive in I am usually disappointed. My first concern with this movie is that it is M Night Shyamalan and I haven't been overly impressed by his terrible directorial efforts in the past. Next part simply put I think this movie was just too demanding a role for Smith Jnr if you will. I suspect if they had got somebody better in the film may have worked (well anybody who can act). Will Smith really overacts to the point where he is trying too hard. Shame because he is a really talented bloke and I love his movies. Simple story father and son take a trip and crash land on a quarantined earth and something has survived as well as them, sadly not their acting abilities or the script. Nothing else I can say really just unfortunately not a good movie.

Shame really
4 April 2013
Warning: Spoilers
I remember when this show was announced, now bare in mind I love and still continue to watch Stargate SG1 and Atlantis. I thought excellent the legacy continues, started very well and here's the problem I had. It just didn't grow on me it never sparked if you will. Yes there's Robert Carlyle who is brilliant as always but (and here's the thing) I really didn't think he had any competition acting wise. Plus to be honest even now I struggle to remember any character names and I also greatly struggled to understand anything that the Colonel said. I found that I wasn't too bothered when a character was killed off and I seemed to get bored very quickly. I promise I did try but this series always struck me as the poor cousin. I dare say another season and it may have worked but when it ended (terrible ending in my opinion) I wasn't that bothered. Maybe it's just me I don't know.

yuck
22 January 2013
Warning: Spoilers
This movie had in theory no chance at life, I think as soon as the scientology aspect was mentioned it was effectively dead in the water. I went to see this when it first came out and in the theatre were 8 people, myself one other and 6 people all dressed the same sitting right in the front row literally miles away from us. Nothing against them it was just a little surreal This movie has so many goofs and gaffs and plot holes I would expect a film student with his buddies to make something like this after a few drinks some star wars figures and possibly some stop motion photography. The concept and story is just so insultingly stupid (humans are really insulted I must mention) that it kind of doesn't work that well. There are a few things about the production that are a little daft lets say and I will try to explain. The camera angle used for the bad guys who are meant to be about 8 foot tall I think, is atrocious after a while I found my neck cranking as I was constantly looking at an angle to watch these scenes. The Alien race love gold and plunder it apparently yet the good guys simply walk into fort knox and take gold (after 1000 years!!!!!! yeah right) The idea that untrained primitive man could fly a Harrier is simply insulting (again the equipment and fuel has been sitting for 1000 years) learning machine or not you don't just fly one of the most difficult aircraft in the world. I could go on but there is only so much space on this review. This film deserved to flop and quite frankly I'm not even slightly surprised it did.

Dredd (2012)
8/10
what Dredd should be
11 October 2012
Warning: Spoilers
First thing, if you go by the comics you see a few connections such as obviously Anderson (PSI division) and Dredd not removing his helmet. This movie is quite simply superb I loved it. I will apologise however as I have not read 2000AD or Judge Dredd for many years but he never loses his appeal.

Dredd as a character is superbly played by Carl Urban (hope I spelt that right) He is a clone of a Chief Justice if I recall as was his brother Rico (no mention of him in the movie that I recall). Dredd is simply told to take the rookie out on her first day for evaluation. Simple as that he pretty much decides if she passes or fails. If only life was that simple. He basically treats this as another day at the office so to speak. He rattles off the stats for Anderson in a very "this is how it works deal with it how you want" kind of way. I really enjoyed this aspect of the Dredd character, he's been there seen it done it got the t shirt.

Effectively this is two Judges versus a 200 floor block controlled by a former prostitute called Ma Ma. Orders are to kill the Judges, simple as. Building is locked down and no communications at all (so no back up for Judges). The resulting movie is very violent and bloody as well as very close to the comics. The story is weakish but the acting makes up for it. Do enjoy this.

This is a movie you have to love
19 May 2012
Warning: Spoilers
You know sometimes they make a movie on a budget that is so pitiful it shouldn't work, as in they haven't spent enough to make an impact. The beastmaster is the kind of movie that studios love because it cost about 4 million dollars to make and it works. I recently watched the directors cut with full commentary and didn't realise how involved this movie was to make. Very simple story, the lead character can communicate with animals and can see through their eyes, he uses this ability to avenge his fathers death against an evil priest and a hoard of barbarians. Throw in a beautiful girl, a few witches and a couple of allies and you have a real winner. The thing to remember here is that most mega budget movies cost at least 25 million US then and this well it didn't (director commentary mentions about 4 million US) This movie is still regarded as an absolute classic and I was raised on this film. HBO became known as Hey Beastmasters On it showed this so often. So if you like sword and sorcery and beautiful heroines and etc etc. You'll love this movie.

Enjoy

Warrior (2011)
10/10
this is Rocky for the next generation
15 April 2012
Warning: Spoilers
If I want to keep it quick and easy just read my summary title. I recall this movie coming out at the cinema and I avoided because it was a 12A which means lots of screaming chatting teens turning up who spoil the show. Finally saw this on blu ray and in a word wow. The story works well and newsflash here, both the stars can really act (Tom Hardy of course is Bane in the new Batman movie). The mma and choreography in general is crisp and sharp and you can't help but cheer as you watch. I really don't get why such a well made movie didn't do better at the box especially when you look at some of the rubbish that does well. Two brothers who went on very different journeys in life with an alcoholic father and nothing in common to unite them. I even love the contrasting styles. You have the former marine who blasts in short and sweet and finishes the job. His brother a school teacher on suspension for prizefighting mma (ironically). He is a thinker but former mma star in his own right and is a lot more technical and calculating for a better word. Anybody watching this who studies martial arts or mma will have a smile whilst they watch this. Karare Kid this isn't.

Enjoy

John Carter (2012)
7/10
good but not for all kids
10 March 2012
Warning: Spoilers
Okay before I start I have read this comic so sort of knew what to expect. It is based on a story written by the author of Tarzan himself so you know it's good. Basically the hero John Carter a civil war veteran gets transported to Mars and due to the heavier gravity on earth he is able to almost fly (jump long distances high basically) and possesses amazing strength. Although a lot of the natives are 12 foot tall and he isn't. He gets involved in a civil war basically and has to reluctantly help a princess. Thats my spoiler but there's a reason I only gave this movie a 7.

The story is very hard for your average 12 year old to understand and they will get bored unless they are willing to try and understand none human phrases and at some parts read subtitles? Apologies for the description but this is supposed to be an alien culture and they do have their own words and phrases which you pick up as you watch, same as learning a foreign language. I saw this movie today and approximately 12-14 12 year olds came in to watch and got themselves thrown out after 20 minutes as the movie is not all action and they struggled to grasp the story and its very clever concept (and got bored and the usual ensued). As I said some children will struggle with this movie. It is certainly neither bloody nor mega violent compared to other 12As but there you have it.

Abduction (I) (2011)
What a shame
1 October 2011
Warning: Spoilers
so here is the story (what there is of it). Teenager finds out courtesy of missing children website that his parents aren't and that his real dad is a serious active special ops/splinter cell guy and his real mother is dead. Pretty much the story. Truth be told when Iwent to see this there were a lot of disruptive loud and annoying teens in the theatre but there you go 12A. Sigourney Weaver (aka Ripley) is wasted in this film and clearly did it for the pay check. The violence that there is is just pathetic, the kick-boxing and martial arts featured is just boring and dull. I was expecting much more than this.

Don't waste your money folks.

Rocky Balboa (2006)
As good as the original
30 September 2011
Warning: Spoilers
You know I am actually beginning to enjoy writing reviews and to be honest I feel that this movie just needs as many reviews as it can get because it is an excellent finisher to the series after number 5.

It's funny but I knew what was going to happen in this movie before they wrote it as it's the final (clue here not called Rocky 6 but Rocky Balboa). Its a story of a guy who has long since hung up his gloves and is running a restaurant telling old boxing stories from the good old days and generally leading a normal relaxed life. He still follows the game so to speak but he feels that he needs to finish off a part of his life which is not quite done. You see him doing an annual pilgrimage to all the places where he took his wife when they met and he is more or less estranged from his son who is in his shadow.

I love the way that the press and promoters think they are goading him into the exhibition fight (he already decided, you know it I know it). I actually really started to smile when he is meeting his trainer and they go through the speel of "this kid is fast, you do't have that, he has hand speed, you don't have that" etc I just smiled and thought this guy has written a story where he is deliberately and intentionally making a point of the fact that he is old and past it, but he is going to give it his heart and soul. When the rocky training entourage kicked in that was it I was almost in tears I thought "rocky, rocky, rocky". When the fight starts I loved it and although you knew what the outcome was going to be the way that nobody cares at this point and the entire audience is shouting "Rocky, Rocky"etc you just know when Rocky turns around and waves/smiles he has put that part of his life to rest.

Enjoy this movie and please don't think that it is just about boxing, it isn't it never was.

Drive (I) (2011)
What a gem
29 September 2011
Warning: Spoilers
Okay story is simple, part time stunt driver, mechanic and wheelman with skills in all departments. I only went to see this because the other movie I wanted to see was a 12A and had a ton of kids going in. Knew the rough story and figured Ryan Gosling why not. What an opening the atmosphere is brilliant and the music is superb like an 80s flashback. Simply put the driver gets double crossed on a job and has to cover his back. Ryan Gosling plays the part brilliantly and there is violence in the movie, warranted where used but I warn you very bloody when it happens and there is nothing left to the imagination. I felt that the rest of the cast did well but this is Ryan Goslings baby and he steals every shot. Thuroughly enjoyable. If I had to criticise it I would say maybe a little slow in parts? Still loved this movie and will be buying it. A cult classic that will not do as well at the box office as it deserves.

I have this on heavily cut DVD
16 July 2011
Warning: Spoilers
I remember watching this movie when it first came out many years ago on video and loved it, basically elimination tournament with weapons. Bloodsport essentially. You have the Samurai character badly and uncomfortably played by David Bradley. I say badly because he is so uptight the entire movie. Maybe he was worried about Mark Dacascos upstaging him, should be he does.

Anyways this is more a message about the region 2 DVD, please don't buy it. It is cut to the point of being a PG. Sincerely this movie is poleaxed by the censors. If you want to watch Mark Dacascos in his element acting superbly please watch this otherwise find the uncut version.

Green Lantern (2011)
6/10
enjoyable but.......3D
18 June 2011
You are looking at my review and thinking why enjoyable but..... Simply put I enjoyed this very predictable movie and as long as you forget your brain and enjoy the action (what there is of it) you'll be fine. I read the Green Lantern for a few issues in the 80s and knew the green lantern back story as I am a comics fan in any case. My problem is this. I have to be careful of movies I watch as I have terrible eyesight (registered blind and colour blind). I saw this movie in 3d which so far I have been fine with and I have seen a few 3d movies (about 5 so far). Not too certain whether it is me but I came out of the theatre with a really bad headache in particular my eyes were aching. My advice to anybody is simple be wary of this 3d. Again I emphasise it may just be me. I hope it is.

the movie that could have been so much better
11 June 2011
Warning: Spoilers
Before I start my review, please don't watch this if you have epilepsy or any reaction at all to flashing lights. I have very bad eyesight and believe me this movie hurts to watch. Simply put the details are guy is a fighter has to pay off brothers mob debt and fights underground to do it, throw in a beautiful actress and some very decent mma guys including Michael Bisping who is one of the best. That is the story in a nutshell and yes it has been done before a few times. What ruins the whole thing is the atrocious editing. there is so much camera movement, flashing in and out and I could go on but this movie literally made my eyes ache. And I don't just mean the fight scenes which have been obliterated by the atrocious editing. The camera seems to be constantly fighting with the camera man and the director and the editor and nobody wins. This movie would have worked if the camera had stayed focused and just stayed still. I wont get technical about the quality of mma etc as it is too hard to see anything with this movie. I love my action flicks and to be honest I think mortal kombat had better editing than this . Such a shame. I bought this DVD because I saw Michael Bisping on the cover. Wish I hadn't.
