The Beekeeper (2024)

Beekeeper can Buzz Off
21 February 2024
Warning: Spoilers
I didn't quite understand the whole philosophy behind the 'beekeeper' and how he deals with the hive and all that. It sounded very convoluted, and quite frankly, the metaphor made zero sense.

But that was the least of the problems with this movie. It starts off confusing - the woman (Eloise Parker) Jason Statham's character Adam Clay is staying with, gets scammed and takes her life. Wait, this elderly lady is packing a semi automatic pistol in the house? I was expecting that it would turn out she was murdered by the people who's money she lost. There was burning food on the stove, so that seemed like a clue. Nope, she really did do herself in. No attempt to talk to anybody, including her daughter, an FBI agent, to try to fix the situation. The daughter by the way, was dull, and fell shoehorned in. If the daughter stopped showing up in the film, you wouldn't have noticed she was missing.

Going back to what sets off Adam Clay in the first place. Statham just happens to drop off a jar of honey at the same time that Parker's daughter happens to show up, and they both see Mother Parker dead. And we learn soon after that she hardly visited her mother, but just happened to visit the house this exact second, no reason. I was expecting that she would say 'my mom's burglar alarm was tripped and I was called to check it out', but nope, just random.

Then throughout the movie, Adam Clay goes on a rampage burning down the companies and subcompanies run by the scammer. The big twist, which was also pointless, was this spoiled brat scammer was the son of the current US (woman) president. What? How did that even matter to the story?

What is really odd as well, was that Statham's character went on killing people, and beating up law enforcement, but at no time did he show he even know how or tried, to get back any of the money. The charity was still out $2million at the end of the film, and that was pretty much it. He had one big fight with a merc at the end who for whatever reason, it was decided giving him an artificial leg would be a useful plot device. It didn't add much to the fight scene at all.

Also disappointing was the earlier fight scene where the 'current' beekeeper is sent to deal with Adam Clay, the former one. SHE goes on a murder rampage at a gas station with a mini gun, and nobody in Law Enforcement seems even mildly astonished at the scale of the damage. It was hilarious how bad this scene was done.

Overall a movie that I only give 2 stars because some of the fight scenes were well done, but overall, a waste of time to watch.

It LOOKED good, but doesn't tell the story well
26 October 2023
Visually, the movie was well-shot and the setting was great. And I didn't find the movie dull for the 3.5hrs running time, which could have shaved off an hour or so. I guess because it kept shifting tone and angle every half an hour, which could have worked in its favour, you were left hoping it would have some sort of pay off ending or climactic conclusion. Sadly. That doesn't happen.

One big issue with this film is the lack of a hero or protagonist you could relate to. The main character, Ernest, was a villain. His wife, who you would have hoped would have taken up the 'heroine' role, was mainly an invalid, victim through the entire movie (after the wedding). We never get to find out more about how the wealth ran through the community, why Hale wanted it for himself, or if he was in league with others, since there were suspicious deaths happening before Molly's family. We never get a sense of where Hale is coming from or even his family, he's just the archetype crime lord, getting others to do his work, and selling them out when they cease to be of use. DiCaprio seemed to be teetering into Sling Blade territory with his characterization. And we know that his character Ernest has a brother Byron, also involved in all this, but you never really see them act like blood relatives. There doesn't seem to be any relationship at all.

Then there were those distracting cameos. The worst was Brendan Fraser's outburst in the court room. I almost forgot what movie I was watching, it was that bad. Then we seem him in a scene with a bunch of supposedly powerful men trying to convince Ernest to do the 'right thing', pointing to a greater conspiracy, but then leaving it hanging.

The end was terrible, cutting to some radio program that almost destroys the atmosphere of the film that had just preceded it. It felt cheap and trite. And Scorsese's cameo, another distraction, was almost self-serving.

So while I am glad this terrible incident in US history has been brought to light through this film, I don't feel it said much or took any stance. A wishy washy effort by Marty.

I Wanted To Like This Movie
30 August 2023
When I saw the trailer, I was intrigued about this story, so I checked out the background of it online and thought this might be a movie worth watching.

The music aspect of the movie is well done. And the actors all play their parts well.

But I felt a lack of connection at the end of the day. It really was a half hour or hour MTV special that was stretched out too long. I really couldn't buy into the angst that Don was feeling, even though I could understand where it was coming from. It just felt repetitive. Especially all of the speeches that happen in the movie. Usually a movie will have one or two big speeches. This one seemed to have many 'oscar' moments that just weighed it down too much.

I also didn't like the cliched 'older self meets younger self'. I think that's been played to death, and is just cheesy now.

I am glad for the Emerson family and I hope they are continuing to rake in the money from the album. It was nice seeing the real voice of Donnie as it is today, he definitely is a gifted singer. But the movie just didn't resonate with me, and that's coming from a music lover.

A good concept, but doesn't deliver
23 August 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I felt that the director spent too much energy establishing the distance in time and location, that she didn't develop the characters enough to make you feel empathy for any of them.

Sure many of us have had that childhood crush that we wish could be revisited in later years, or at least some curiosity of what happened in the meantime. But it feels like those gaps in time weren't filled with anything. It's as if the characters had stopped for 12 years, then started again, then stopped, then started again, which would not be realistic.

I was also half expecting Nora to talk about 9/11 as they were on the boat, and how it affected her, as she would have been living in NYC at that time, but that wasn't even brought up. Not that it was crucial to the plot of the film, but it did shape a lot of people's lives who lived through it.

What really got under my skin, though, was the long pauses. I get it, you want to convey emotion through watching the characters pausing and looking at each other without saying anything. But after the 3rd or 4th time, it just felt really forced.

Ultimately, I didn't really feel any emotion for any of the characters, and what good is a drama if you aren't connecting with the people in it? Worth a look, but in the end, you don't really feel you learned anything at the end.

Cocaine Bear (2023)
1/10
Written and Directed by a 14 Year Old?
28 July 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I can't believe that an adult directed this film, it was so poorly done, I would have thought it was done by a teen. The jokes were non-existent, and much of it depended upon the characters wearing silly wigs, or acting ditsy.

Examples of really glaring continuity issues: The three guys including Ice Cube's son, and a blonde Sam Rockwell clone, started walking into the woods looking for the coke pretty early on. It seems like they're walking for hours. Then older cop guy shows up hours later, who gets out of breath just getting out of the car, and he arrives at the gazebo LONG before the three stooges arrive. What?!!

Later said cop is on top of the gazebo and is SHOT by a rifle by Ray Liotta. You'd think it was done on purpose. But then you see the three guys run off into the woods, and meet up with Ray Liotta standing there with his rifle, and he has no idea what they're talking about when referring to going to the gazebo. Huh? You just shot a guy standing on it?

The ending with the water fall is ridiculous, where did that cliff come from? The ground for the whole movie was FLAT. But somehow, they walk in a cave from flat ground, and end up at a cliff 1000 feet high?!

The only fun part of this movie is the title and using it to reference other things. The film itself is terrible, and you're not missing anything if you haven't seen it.

Not As Good As Game Night
13 April 2023
I decided to watch this film solely for the reason that I liked what these guys did with Game Night. I'm not a dungeons and dragons or knights in armor period movies fan, but I was hoping this movie would still be well-written with great comedic timing.

It was just so-so. I would say it was a like a Guy Ritchie Sherlock movie, with all the steampunk tech and modern day lingo.

None of the characters were likeable, or you didn't care whether they lived or died, or lived happily ever after. The action was okay, but I couldn't help but think I was watching a movie that was more animation than live. Even the horses they were riding were clearly CGI.

I would say that unless you are a die-hard fan of the dragons and knights genre, you might enjoy this. If you're just a casual fan of adventure movies, you can skip this one.

Not Good
4 April 2023
I remember watching this back in the day, and not liking it. I found it very stereotypical, and unflattering to the Japanese culture. After having been to Japan a number of times since then, I find the movie even more xenophobic. I mean, if they had made a similar movie about a white guy amongst a bunch of black guys acting stereotypical, there would have been an uproar. But because this is another country, which probably most Americans have never visited, this movie somehow gets a pass. Add to that, it's the work of Francis Ford Coppola's daughter, and it's automatically put into the 'praise' category.

Bill Murray's character isn't very likeable. Heck, none of the characters are very likeable. Seems like many of the jokes are at the expense of the culture, just like the Wes Anderson movie 'Isle of Dogs' was, or 'Rising Sun' by Philip Kaufman.

If this movie had had a decent Asian protagonist to help the movie along, it would have been less offensive. You don't see the American characters even try to embrace their new surrounding, they're instead portrayed as some how a victim of their new home. They would rather bend Japan to their will because they don't want to try to adapt. So instead of trying make friends with people there, they just gravitate to each other. I mean come on, you're not on Mars, you're in Japan! Enjoy it, explore it!

Avoid this movie, especially if you're a Japan-file. This won't add to your appreciation of the culture. I would suggest a movie like Ramen Girl if you want to watch a movie about someone who is an outsider who learns to fit in, instead of trying to bend the culture to their will.

All Style, Little Substance
3 February 2023
I must admit, I haven't seen the original Akira Kurosawa film, so I have nothing to compare this with. But I shouldn't have to, it should stand on its own. Sadly it doesn't.

I found this movie just couldn't follow a single style or even narrative. It jumped all over the place, and just when you thought it was over, it kept going. I guess a good analogy would be if 4 or 5 different directors had been given the task of filming a certain section of this film, then they stitched it together to make one movie, that's what this viewing was like.

I didn't understand how some characters could disappear from their work or their family for days, weeks, months at a time, and nobody called the police, and they still had a job.

I also couldn't understand the negative interactions between Bill Nighy's character and his son and daughter-in-law. What was the reason for them being so mean to him? There was no background on this.

The acting was decent, but nothing remarkable or earth shattering. Bill Nighy was his usual self, but not really carrying the movie. The young lady's performance was okay, but I was constantly distracted by her front teeth. I get it, that's her trademark look, but it still didn't help me feel invested in her character.

Everyone else in the movie was just there to build up or support Bill Nighy's character. They were okay, but nothing remarkable. I didn't recognize Adrian Rawlins, though! I will always remember as the solicitor who took on the Woman In Black in 1989.

Overall, just a so so movie. I wouldn't call it life-changing by any means. The look was the only thing going for it. Maybe I will check out the Kurosawa film and see how it compares to this one.

The Menu (2022)

The Menu Lacks Flavor
15 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I saw all the glowing reviews for this movie, so I was expecting a winner. But this menu lacked flavor.

Problems with this movie: Nobody you cared about; why did Chef decide to do this final menu; why did everyone believe in his cause; how were these people who came that 'bad' or deserving of their fate; why would he tell at least one of them what he was planning; and what was the point of setting up a fake coast guard, how did he know that would even be needed; what was the point of having his mother there; how does the protagonist not only figure out how to start up the boat but also pilot it in the dark.

The movie had good pacing, but the direction this film was going, even who would survive in the end, was way too obvious early on. A shame that so many great actors were somewhat wasted in this film.

Corny and Dated
5 December 2022
To be frank, I was a huge fan of this film for a long time. Maybe it was about 10 or 15 years ago when I last watched it, and still found it entertaining.

But today, I couldn't help but notice so many plot holes and inconsistencies that I found them distracting.

First of all, when Dr Stevenson disappears and takes off, how come there's no sound. But when the Time Machine returns, it's like a mini earthquake.

Why does the machine have to raise in the air to travel through time? And how did it end up in San Francisco 1979 in an exhibit, of all things?

Then there's Herbert Wells interactions in 1979. It's inconsistent. One second he has no idea about the world he's in. Next minute, he's knocking on Stevenson's hotel door and doing a fake voice as room service?! How does he even know about room service?

And Mary Steenburgen's character is odd. She takes a lunch break and ends up driving across the Golden Gate bridge, going to a park, then taking Herbert Wells home. I guess her job had flexible hours and didn't mind their employees take half days off out of the blue lol.

I might have to try to watch this again, I just can't get back into this one. A shame, I really enjoyed it so much in the past.

King Kong Kamp
4 December 2022
I finally saw this movie recently after probably last seeing it as a kid. I know over the last few years I've come across a lot of music that was inspired by this movie, like Jimmy Castors 'King Kong' and Love Unlimited Orchestra's dance cover of 'Theme From King Kong', so this movie did seem to catch the eye of pop culture back in the day.

Well, this movie is about as camp as camp can be. With dialogue referencing 'Deep Throat' and a 'Man in a Monkey Suit' you know this isn't going to be serious endeavor.

Charles Grodin was interesting to watch. I had to look it up just to confirm it was him. He wasn't doing his trademark shtick, which he had a distinctive way of speaking for many years.

Jessica Lange is pretty, but a complete airhead in this film. Jeff Bridges is trying to play it as serious as possible.

Worth a watch if there's nothing else on, and you're curious about this forgotten remake that happened between the original and the Peter Jackson version.

Has Some Entertaining Moments, But Way Too Long
1 December 2022
I think from the trailer, people already get a sense of what this movie is about. And the director doesn't waste any time hitting you over the head with that. Except for the first act, which seemed completely unconnected to the rest of the movie. A good director could have developed the relationship within the framework of the ship sequence, but for some reason, this guy made it like some anthology film, and the unnecessary preamble was put in to lengthen the running time.

The other issue was the long drawn out and repetition of the jokes. It was like that guy who tells a joke, and sees people laugh, so he keeps saying it over and over again until people are sick of it. That's how this movie handles the humour. Then it moves into the absurd with the last section. The twist was predictable, but makes little sense when you really think about it. The time jump was also odd and jarring, not handled very well.

Overall, the movie had some decent entertainment value, but should have had some serious editing to bring it under 2 hrs, including removing that entire first act, and maybe employing parts of it in flashback if they needed to fill in the gaps.

The All-Female Ghostbusters Movie Was WAAAAAY Better Than This!
15 November 2022
Okay, so they aren't going to even try to make something good. Sure, they change out the original actors (4 men), and either turn them into females, or turn them into kids, and expect the story to write itself. Jason Reitman couldn't even come up with an original set design, we basically see a reproduction of what we saw in the 84 film on top of the building. So many ideas borrowed from the original movie, but nothing really makes sense or adds to the movie, like why is there a gun seat in the Ecto car? That kid (or anyone else for that matter) would have been sheered off while that thing was driving. It's just awful that this movie was designed for kids, not for the people who really enjoyed the original. It's part dumbing down of hollywood, and part-not having original ideas.

All they do is switch out the age or gender of the protagonists and expect everyone to run to the theater to watch it. First it was all women; then it was all-kids for the Stranger Things crowd (they even had the gall to use one of the Stranger Things cast members). Next incarnation will probably be all black or all asian, but exact same story line, and they'll pat themselves on the back having thought of themselves as clever with the idea.

In conclusion, I'll take the 2016 movie over this one, at least it was FUNNY, which this one isn't. This movie just took itself way too seriously, and the casting was too dull. It got the extra star because Paul Rudd is his usual engaging self, but even he can't save this movie. He's barely in it, even though the trailers sold it as a vehicle for him.

I enjoyed this even though it did get too silly at times
13 April 2022
The movie is very Asian. The overall story arc is exploring family relations in an inter-generational family. Between daughter and mother, husband and wife, (grand)father and daughter. Expectations, disappointments, maybe lack of expressing love and emotion, all play a part in this film. It's framed in a sci-fi/fantasy thriller, that overall, doesn't QUITE make sense. I guess the director, who previously did the oddball Swiss Army Man, wasn't content with doing a straight up drama.

I am leaning to the belief that what happens is more of a construct of Michelle Yeoh's identity crisis as she reaches a crossroads in her life and her business. She escapes into the alternate reality to process her feelings and emotions for everything. That's the only thing that makes sense to me anyway.

The action was decent, but it's not the focal point of this film. There are scenes with fights, some really well done. There are some groan worthy moments, sexual innuendos during the fights, and so on. But overall, they're somewhat straight forward fight scenes. I guess Dan Kwan took some inspiration from the over the top CGI comedy of Stephen Chow's action films like Kung Fu Hustle.

I'm not sure if this film resonates with non-asians. They might not relate to the cold, judging motherly character of Michelle Yeoh, and not understand why she is distant with her daughter. But judging from all the positive reviews, it sounds like it has appealed to a wide audience.

Everyone does a great job in their roles. I can't believe James Hong is still acting. He's several years ago away from being 100 years old. And great to see 'short round' Ke Huy Quan in a movie. His voice hasn't changed much since his child acting days lol. The actress who played the daughter was also really good. And of course Michelle Yeoh sells the character, and all the alternate universe versions.

At 2 hours, the movie flies pretty good. There were some moments that were silly, and probably could have been shortened or left out, like the rocks and pinata moments. Otherwise, an entertaining film.

Raging Baloney
10 March 2022
I put off watching this movie for a long time, even after I'd seen many other Scorsese flicks. When he's on top, Marty delivers the goods. When he's not, it's a chore to watch. This movie is somewhere in the middle. It has received many accolades, but I didn't care for it.

Frankly, I only stuck watching the film all the way through, was for the infamous line 'you f*&( my wife?'. I never saw the scene, I just heard the quote many times over the years.

Well, it wasn't worth the wait. The movie was pretty bland. I was hoping for a lot of good fight scenes, but it's not a boxing movie. I was hoping for much drama, but nope, it's all about Jake LaMotta being angry, being a jerk. There's not much range here. And there isn't any original story arc or plot. So much stuff just jumps around, we're basically watching a highlight clip of the guy's life.

There's a few gimmicks to boot. Shooting it in black and white was interesting, but doesn't add to or improve the quality of the viewing experience. And DeNiro's wait gain was impressive, but was it really worth it? I'm just glad he was able to drop the pounds after. He did the same weight gain for Untouchables, which was much better as his heavier self was featured in most of the film.

This is not a movie that will enlighten you, or change you, or change your opinion of LaMotta, if you even had one. It's just there. I don't get the love for it, it's not outstanding in any way. Perhaps the only true highlight of the film is Joe Pesci's big time breakout performance. He really steals the movie. But he does become a victim of his own success, but playing the same character in every movie after this one.

I would only recommend this movie for anyone who is a Scorsese completist and just wants to finish seeing all his flicks. If you don't ever get to see it, you aren't missing much.

I just watched this episode and I can't believe that this was the actual series finale. They couldn't do a proper episode where the characters say goodbye? Instead, Quincy appears on the scene, not even a coroner case, then just fades away as the episode goes on? Fans deserved better. Adding insult to injury, the series wasn't even picked up.

Cute, but not very Scientific!
6 December 2021
This has been playing a few times on TV lately, so I've watched it a couple of times and have noticed things I didn't see the first time around.

Everyone has commented on the romantic aspects of it, and Pratt and Lawrence deliver. I wish Fishburne had been in there longer, he pretty much blows the other two actors out of the water.

Now the nitpicking: The damage that occurred should have registered in more than one place. It shouldn't have been something that would be invisible. Where are all the cameras? There should have been a camera in the engineering around to record the collision.

Why is it that Fishburne's character wakes up, and does have some medical diagnostic done ASAP. And no explanation as to WHY he had so many problems.

All those power shortages, wouldn't those have taken people out of suspension? Shouldn't everyone have died while they slept.

The whole space walk thing was silly. They've got such an advanced ship, yet they can only use tethers to the outside, and crawl around? No space pods, or suits with jets?! And as someone pointed out, only one automatic med device for the whole ship? And it requires medical clearance to use? What happens if the nurses and/or doctors died?

How did the trees and plants grow like that, was there something watering them after the two had long died?!

Okay, that's enough nitpicking. It's a good little afternoon movie if there's nothing else to watch. I wonder how many picked up on the Shining reference, with the bartender and bar? It's a bit of a red herring, it doesn't go sinister like it did in that movie.

Car Wash (1976)

Much Deeper Than Its Comedic and Musical Reputation
16 November 2021
Most people when thinking about this movie, remember the comedy and of course, the wonderful music provided by Rose Royce, and the one singing sequence with The Pointer Sisters.

But this movie is actually multi layered. It depicts one day in the life of a bunch of workers at a Car Wash, with a white owner. The workers are the poor, not all ethnic or black. We see life at the business from the viewpoint of the workers and of the owner. Things aren't always rosy at the top. There is also the one black worker who insists he's above the others, and they mock him as well.

Plot? Not really. The movie almost takes a dark turn towards the ending. But again, it just shows regular working class guys just getting by, and making the most of life without dwelling on their financial situation or social status.

And did I mention the great funky music?!

What the hell has happened to the show?!!!
8 November 2021
This isn't even the SAME show as last season. They're using the same actors, same characters, but it's NOT the same show. It's like someone decided to start it from scratch. The whole nuclear wasteland angle is really stupid. It looks like it's all shot on a sound stage, it just looks cheap, like some horrible B movie set. The editing is horrible.

I see they are wrapping up World Beyond as well. I guess the Walking Dead franchise has finally reached the end. I am okay with Fear also being put out of its misery, if this is the new direction they're going to take. I bet Alicia doesn't even return, that's how bad this season has been.

I Don't Get The Hate
4 November 2021
I finally got around to watching this film. Over the years, I've heard how it's over the top, camp, etc... And it has been given 'cult' status.

But I really didn't see it that way. Yes, there was some over the top melodrama. Faye really went all out on the anger scenes. But the movie wasn't just about Joan losing control. There were some scenes of tenderness and vulnerability as well. I think much of the hate are those who refuse to accept that Joan could be such a character in real life. Granted, even the real life daughter said a number of the scenes in the film didn't happen, and there was dramatic license with having the one maid Carol Anne being present throughout the whole film, instead of really happened (there were many different maids in real life). But the film moved really well. It doesn't really give any message or moral, which reminds me of the recent Eyes of Tammy Faye movie. It's just checking off the various points in Joan's life, just like that other film did with Tammy Faye. It still is engaging.

What I find most attractive about the film, though, isn't really touched on by other reviewers, is the LOOK. The film LOOKS great. I thought this was shown in theaters in Academy Ratio (full frame), because when I streamed it, that's how it was presented. So not only did it look retro, it was framed retro, adding to the authenticity of the presentation. The colors were amazing, I really felt they went for an early Technicolor look for all those scenes pre-1960s. There were moments when I thought I was truly watching a film from the 1940s.

So, this much maligned film, I would say, is quite well done. It helps to also understand how childhood abuse and trauma can create the type of personality that Joan exhibits in this film. And the abused then becomes the abuser. In the early 80s, nobody talked about child abuse and its affects on a person into adulthood. I'm glad I viewed it now, with that extra bit of knowledge. I don't view Joan as a monster, she was trapped in her persona, and lived at a time when one didn't seek therapy for childhood trauma.

The series is fluxed
1 November 2021
Warning: Spoilers
What a horrible start to a horrible idea for a season. The opening scene alone set the tone for the stupidity of the action. Was that Fast & The Furious meets Harry Potter?

Then we see the guy who is to be the new companion. He looks about as lively and charismatic as Bob Dole and John Kerry combined.

And what happened with the show's continuity? We see the terrier alien literally smash down his from door, and when he gets put in the cage, he's lying on the ground. The Doctor shows up, the door is intact, and there a perfect square on the floor as if the cage was upright. Huh?! In addition to bad writing, now they have bad continuity.

Then the doctor sees the flux is chasing after her, so she decides to head straight to Earth where it proceeds to chase her, like the TARDIS was a spaceship? What happened to dematerializing? And 7 billion dog ships is not going to protect the earth, they wouldn't even surround a fifth of the surface area.

I think this season is going to make the fans just pray for the show's death. Very disappointing it fell off the rails after Matt Smith....

How the Flux did this get over 7 rating?
1 November 2021
This episode was horrible. The beginning played out like a Fast & The Furious or Harry Potter movie. Then you get Yaz able to unlock alien tech that was supposedly booby trapped. And then this new guy who supposedly will be the new companion has the charisma of a door stop. And nothing about the story makes sense, now they're going to have a nonsensical season story arc. This better end with a regeneration, back to a male doctor, and a new writing team or show runner.

Just say 'no' to Wes
29 October 2021
I've tried watching Wes Anderson's films. I've sat through most of them. And I still dislike him. The problem with his 'style', is that it's all that there is. The stories are bland, the characters are lame. If you like watching a movie that screams hipster and 'ain't I'm clever', then this the movie for you. Wes' movies are good for screenshots as computer desktop wallpaper, but taken as a whole, they leave you feeling empty and wondering why you wasted so much time.

Keeping Up The Tradition of Alternating Good & Bad Seasons
25 October 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Last year was spectacular, so sadly after two episodes, it appears we're heading down another weak season. The usual alternating good and bad seasons that have plagued Fear The Walking Dead.

I'm not loving this whole nuclear fallout world of walking dead. Seriously, they're still alive living inside that dark haze? None of it makes any sense.

Episode was particularly bad. You Grace acting all strange with a new baby, then you see they've been living in the nuclear submarine the whole time. Just cringe worthy forced drama. Then they meet up with the same two people that Grace was hiding from in the beginning of the episode. They were driving for how long? So how did Grace get there?

Then towards the end, the story seems to fall apart. You get these zombies that come and go, one minute they're not around so they're repairing the car in the middle of the street, next thing, they're all over the place.

Then Morgan and Grace leave that woman after Grace has just shot and killed her husband, and it's like it never happened. Would the woman be kind of upset?

And then what was up with that last scene, with the guy and the box with the head? I

It seems like they're going for a zombies meets Mad Max type of season. I sure hope it gets better.

A Novel Idea That Fails In Execution.
22 October 2021
Warning: Spoilers
The concept of tying in vampire lore with a mob movie was quite interesting. Mob movies were the rage in the late 80s, early 90s, so this could have been added to that sub-genre of crime film.

But sadly, this movie suffers from poor direction and poor story writing.

Let me first start with the technical problems. I found the editing really really bad. Scenes would end suddenly, then jump into another scene you thought was related to the previous scene, but then it turns out they were either happening miles apart, or at a different time. It was really poorly done. For example, the scene where Anthony LaPaglia first meets Marie, this is right after him and Chaz. Palminteri had their heart to heart talk, then he walks off, I'm guessing, to go to his car. LaPaglia is about to get into his car, has an interaction with Marie, she decides he's not worth eating, and walks off. Next second you see her cross the street, and get hit by Chaz's car. And then there's a huge yelling. Anyway, it feels like LaPagia's character should have been just across the street and come over to smooth things over, but that's not what happens. That's just one example of where the editing is weird and the flow of the story is jarring or thrown off.

As another reviewer mentioned, the whole plot of the Mobsters getting turned into vampires is interesting but goes nowhere. Well, one problem is right after Marie bites Robert Loggia's mafia Don character. For whatever reason, she doesn't run away before the cops arrive?! She was already out of the apartment, and was on the roof, and so she waited there until LaPaglia finally shows up, at which time she decides to run?!! That made no sense.

Anyway, as the movie progresses Loggia just keeps biting one mobster after another, and they all brag how they're going to 'run this town'. But we never see who the competition is. Who are these other organized crime groups they are up against? All you see is just this one family and so the movie feels half thought out by the end.

One thing that bothered me was Landis was sloppy with his vampire tropes. We never get to see them dispatched the usual way. I mean, when has a vampire died from a gun shot to the head? I understand if you blow off their WHOLE head, that's hard to come back from. But a small handgun shot? There were no stakes to the heart, holy water moments. Heck, this 'vampire' Marie even had a reflection and she was running around inside of a church! WTF?! I was beginning to doubt she was a real vampire, just someone faking it, because of those non-vampire characteristics.

There are a few 'cute' moments when you see cameos by horror royalty, like Tom Savini as a paparazzi, Sam Raimi as the meat locker employee, and Dario Argento as an EMT. And oddly, in January, there's an abundance of black and white, horror movies on TV.

Otherwise, this semi-homage to classic horror, falls short. Still worth a watch. Some find it fun, but it's far from Landis' best work.
