Series: a shortlist
by menederdebeder | created - 21 Jan 2011 | updated - 1 week ago | PublicThe following is a list of series I've seen. I have seen at least an entire season in chronological order. And for every such series I will give a short reason what I like or don't like about it.
The list is approximately in order from good to bad. Since many series are not comparable it will not be in perfect order. Also, I only start watching series I suppose I'll like. This is obvious but that means that like the top 80% are series I think are very good. A series that is near the bottom half of this list is still a very good series (in my opinion, obviously).
When it says '(Finished)' it means, that the series has ended and I have seen every episode.
Programs that are a direct copy for another country are not listed separate, unless one is way better - or different - than the other.
Single series with multiple entries in iMDB (some series have the seasons added as separate entries) are also listed as one. The first season I've seen is listed in this case.
(Series that still need to be added: World Series of Poker (2009, 2010), Atom (1), Dexter (1), Heroes (1-3), Life (1), Mad Men (1), My Family (1-9), The Blue Planet (1), The Office UK (1), The Pacific (1), The Sopranos (1-5), The Stand (1), Torchwood (1-3), World Poker Tour (8)), De beste Singer Songwriter (2-3)
Total: 205 seasons of 62 series

Votes: 164,519
Seasons seen: 1-4 (Finished) Soo funny. It is a little bit comparable with The Big Bang Theory, in that the main characters are highly anti-social. But unless that show, this one makes me laugh.

TV-MA | 60 min | Action, Adventure, Drama
Nine noble families fight for control over the lands of Westeros, while an ancient enemy returns after being dormant for millennia.

Stars: Rowan Atkinson, Brian Blessed, Elspet Gray, Tim McInnerny
Votes: 41,102
Seasons seen: 1-4 (Finished) Favourite season: 4 Brilliant series. The humour is very cunning. British sarcasm at best. Only the first season is not that brilliant. This series seems to get better with each season (too bad there were only 4).

35 min | Documentary

Stars: Coen Verbraak, Wouter Bos, Frans Weisglas, Jan Marijnissen
Votes: 49
Seasons seen: 1 & 3 This is a Dutch documentary series in which every season is about a different subject. Season 3 was about lawyers and they interviewed literally every top lawyer in Holland. The style is very basic and in this there lies it's strength. No flashy parts, just questions and answers, and only when really helpfull a short part from the news. The questions are very good and the answers very interesting. Certain perspective changer.

Follows the misadventures of four irreverent grade-schoolers in the quiet, dysfunctional town of South Park, Colorado.
Stars: Trey Parker, Matt Stone, Isaac Hayes, Mona Marshall

Bernard Black runs a book shop, though his customer service skills leave something to be desired. He hires Manny as an employee. Fran runs the shop next door. Between the three of them many adventures ensue.
Stars: Dylan Moran, Bill Bailey, Tamsin Greig, Paul Beech
Votes: 61,954
Seasons seen: 1-3 (Finished) Typical series to prove that the British know how to make a comedy. Especially the people hating Bernard is very funny. Makes me laugh very loudly.
13. Sherlock (2010–2017)
TV-14 | 90 min | Crime, Drama, Mystery
The quirky spin on Conan Doyle's iconic sleuth pitches him as a "high-functioning sociopath" in modern-day London. Assisting him in his investigations: Afghanistan War vet John Watson, who's introduced to Holmes by a mutual acquaintance.
Stars: Benedict Cumberbatch, Martin Freeman, Una Stubbs, Rupert Graves
Votes: 999,917

Stars: Brian Cox, Steven Mackintosh
Votes: 4,343
Seasons seen: 1 (Finished) Same as Wonders of the Solar System. Can be seen as a season 2 (except for the fact, that it doesn't cover the main premise of that series, of course).
17. Top Gear (2002–2022)
TV-PG | 60 min | Adventure, Sport, Talk-Show
The hosts talk about everything car-related. From new cars to how they're fueled, this show has it all.
Stars: Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond, James May, The Stig
Votes: 126,802
Seasons seen: 1-17 This is not a program about cars. It is a program that uses cars as an excuse to just cock about. And that's a good thing, because I don't like cars but I do like cocking about. It has many really hilarious moments. Sometimes it feels a bit forced, and sometimes the hosts do find themselves a little bit too funny. But those are minor problems to an otherwise very funny program.
18. Carnivàle (2003–2005)

28. High Stakes Poker (2006– )
60 min | Game-Show, Reality-TV, Sport
A televised poker cash game in which top pros including Sam Farha, Doyle Brunson, and Johnny Chan compete. This is not a tournament however, each player is playing with their own money and they have the option to buy in again.
Stars: Gabe Kaplan, Daniel Negreanu, A.J. Benza, Doyle Brunson
Votes: 1,244
Seasons seen: 1 & 4-6 Favourite season: 4 So obviously this series is only interesting if you're actually into poker. But if you are, this series is the best. The commentary is funny but not forced (although I heard that changes in season 7, more on that later). And you can watch it in two ways. You can either analyse every hand and see why they do what they do (which will not be easy) or you can just watch it laid back and be in awe every time there is a sick bluff or someone calls a hand perfectly. Or just the massive amount of money that changes hands.
29. A Bit of Fry and Laurie (1987–1995)
TV-PG | 30 min | Comedy
Comedians Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie perform a variety of comedy skits and the occasional musical number.

Stars: Jennifer Beals, Leisha Hailey, Laurel Holloman, Mia Kirshner
Votes: 28,777
Seasons seen: 1-6 (Finished) Yes, this series contains many beautiful women making out. But that is not the only reason to watch it. It is just way better than I expected.

TV-MA | 30 min | Comedy, Documentary
The comedy illusionist duo explore various topics and debunk what they consider misconceptions about them.
Stars: Penn Jillette, Teller, Shera Pollins, Michael Goudeau
Votes: 11,916
Seasons seen: 1-8 In your face scepticism! This series attacks about every crackpot, fraud and common misconception. Many of them I already hated, like creationism, UFO, ESP and alternative medicine. Some of them I was slightly aware of, but I never really hated until I saw this series, like the anti-genetic modification movement. Yeah sure, they are quite harsh and sometimes they might put things a little bit too simplistic. But they are mostly in their right and far most of their 'victims' don't deserve any better.

Follows four friends in 't Gooi, a Dutch region where rich people live.
Stars: Linda de Mol, Peter Paul Muller, Tjitske Reidinga, Susan Visser

Votes: 10,779
Seasons seen: 1-3 & 6 Talent shows... not my favourite kind of programs. But when those who are on the show are really talented and - very important - very versatile, it's a whole different story. SYTYCD is a good example. This show is actually really fun to watch. Spin-offs I've seen: So You Think You Can Dance (Benelux) (Season 1 & 3)

Stars: Tom Selleck, Rutger Hauer, Steve Backshall, Dave Canterbury
Votes: 617
Seasons seen: 1 (Finished) Yes, it is a beautiful series with beautiful images. But the voice over is way overdone, trying to be 'epic'. It isn't. It is just bloody annoying. Still I loved watching this series.
43. Archer (2009–2023)
TV-MA | 22 min | Animation, Action, Comedy
Covert black ops and espionage take a back seat to zany personalities and relationships between secret agents and drones.
Stars: H. Jon Benjamin, Judy Greer, Amber Nash, Chris Parnell
Votes: 166,037
Seasons seen: 1-3 This series has a lot of random humour, often a bit too random for me, but sometimes hitting the mark. This series, unlike most series, gets better the farther it goes on.
44. Dinosaurs (1991–1994)
TV-PG | 30 min | Comedy, Family, Fantasy
This show follows the life of a family of dinosaurs, living in a modern world. They have televisions, refrigerators, et cetera. The only humans around are cavemen, who are viewed as pets and wild animals.
Stars: Stuart Pankin, Allan Trautman, Jessica Walter, Leif Tilden
Votes: 21,752
Seasons seen: 1-4 (Finished) This series is pure nostalgia. When you're a little bit older, it might be a little bit overly moralistic. But it is still quite funny. And Baby Sinclair is just way too cool.

The fractured domestic lives of a nihilistic mad scientist and his anxious grandson are further complicated by their inter-dimensional misadventures.

The lives inside and outside video games of the members of online guild the Knights of Good.
Stars: Felicia Day, Sandeep Parikh, Jeff Lewis, Robin Thorsen
Votes: 10,462
Seasons seen: 1-5 Wow, this is nerdy. But it has Felicia Day in it and the episodes are so short that you can't really can't get fed up with it before it is over. In fact... it is kind of addictive.
47. Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey (2014)
TV-PG | 43 min | Documentary
An exploration of our discovery of the laws of nature and coordinates in space and time.
Stars: Neil deGrasse Tyson, Christopher Emerson, Keythe Farley, Piotr Michael
Votes: 128,839
Seasons seen: 1 (Finished)
Nice series, but sometimes a little bit off mark, I think. It seems to be more motivational than educative. A noble cause, but I watched it because I was already motivated. Still you can learn quite a bit watching it.
Also sometimes it was a little bit too epic.
48. One Tree Hill (2003–2012)

Stars: Adrianne Curry, Yoanna House, Tyra Banks, J. Alexander
Votes: 18,465
Seasons seen: 1-5 & 15-17 Favourite seasons: 4, 16 Real easy entertainment. I shouldn't be liking this but I do. There is a lot of bitchness, and it is easy to find favourites and girls you just can't wait to be gone. Spin-offs I've seen: Hollands Next Top Model (Season 1) Benelux Next Top Model (Season 2)
50. How I Met Your Mother (2005–2014)

Period drama about the pilots and flight attendants who once made Pan Am the most glamorous way to fly.

Stars: Michael Chiklis, Julie Benz, Kay Panabaker, Jimmy Bennett
Votes: 17,092
Seasons seen: 1 A sort of Heroes only for a younger audience. The characters are way more straight forward, but also a lot easier (in a good way) and less forced than Heroes.

TV-PG | 22 min | Comedy, Family
Jimmy becomes a single parent to an infant after her mother, with whom he had a one-night stand, ends up on Death Row.
Stars: Lucas Neff, Martha Plimpton, Garret Dillahunt, Shannon Woodward
Votes: 40,720
Seasons seen: 1-2 Quite funny series. Some characters are really good (Burt) and some are terrible (Maw Maw). The series would have ended up a lot higher if it was not for Maw Maw.
55. Arrow (2012–2020)

Stars: Stephen Amell, Katie Cassidy, David Ramsey, Susanna Thompson
Votes: 446,191
Seasons seen: 1-2 Series in the comics style. This means that it sometimes gets a little bit unbelievable. Why doesn't he just shoot him? Why do people with guns get close to people without guns? How does the help get there just in time every. *beep* time?
56. Pushing Daisies (2007–2009)

30 min | Documentary
James May gives a scientific explanation to - well just about everything; from human evolution and functions, meteorology, chemistry, physics, and so many other subjects.
Star: James May
Votes: 235
Seasons seen: 1 Not as good as hoped. The claims can not always be backed up by data. But more irritating: they talk about interesting stuff, but instead of showing the real thing which might be very interesting to see, they show animations that do nothing make it any clearer and are sometimes nauseating (especially in the first episode).
58. Glee (2009–2015)

Stars: Lea Michele, Jane Lynch, Matthew Morrison, Cory Monteith

Seasons seen: 1-3
Yes, pretty gay, the songs sometimes suck balls, but hey, what did you expect? It gives you exactly what it says it does. Sometimes the songs are actually pretty fun, and if you like over the top drama, this series is actually quite o.k. to watch.
That is to say, up to a certain time. At some point I did get fed up. Especially after some of the better characters left and were replaced by horrific characters. This happened mostly in season 3, where a whole bunch of new nauseating characters is introduced.

Stars: Johnny Galecki, Jim Parsons, Kaley Cuoco, Simon Helberg
Votes: 868,980
Seasons seen: 1-3 Mildly funny series. My problem with the series is that they seem to mix up jokes about science with jokes containing scientific terms. Sometimes they do get it right and get the former, but mostly they get the latter. Yes, sometimes I have to laugh a little bit, but on average it just isn't that funny. The good thing is that the episodes are short and you don't really have to pay attention. And sometimes you can catch the intelligent Sheldon making a mistake. That's always fun. But I will only watch this series if I'm really bored.

Seasons seen: 1 I expected a bad series, when I started watching. Bad but with dinosaurs! Alas, the dinosaurs weren't that common and are often not that realistic too. Which made 'bad' the only correct part of my prediction.
