Haunt Films I've Watched

by RyanLWeaver | created - 24 Nov 2015 | updated - 4 months ago | Public

A list of every haunt film I've seen. By haunt film I mean films about houses, asylums, orphanages, persons, etc. that are haunted by ghosts or demons or in some way very much involve ghosts or the hereafter, including possessions and exorcisms, evil dolls, witchcraft in a haunt setting, and films in which there appears to be a haunting but a non-supernatural explanation is later revealed.

Keep in mind that while many haunt films are also horror films, the haunt genre and the horror genre are not the same thing. This list is not limited to horror and includes all sub-genres of the haunt genre - comedy, drama, family, etc. - so long as the previously mentioned conditions are met. Films such as the Harry Potter series do not meet the conditions even though they include ghosts and witchcraft because the ghosts are not the focus and the witchcraft is not intended to be scary.

As of the 266th film added to this list I'm writing a review for each one I add. I may go back and review some of the films I've seen previously but those reviews will be slow in coming if I ever even get around to them.

Not listed due to not being on imdb: The 3:07 AM Project (2013) (Short Film comprised of 4 Micro-Shorts)

Whether this is a haunt film or not is ambiguous, but it does manage to be very creepy. Considering the antagonists seeming ability to teleport I would say that yes it is. It's predictable but that doesn't take away from the effect and I found it to be an enjoyable four minute film.

The unique story concept sold me on this one instantly - a house built out of rooms people were killed in with the specific intent of building a haunted house.

It starts off with fantastic cinematography and within the first 7 minutes there is an extremely disturbing scene that gave me a good thrill. After that it becomes a detective mystery film for the next hour or so, and finally at long last it becomes a haunt film for the last twenty minutes with what is the most awesome haunted house I've ever seen on film. If there was a haunt thrill park with something like that house I would pay thousands to visit it.

Aside from taking so long to get to the haunt, the only downfall to the film is it is not scary, aside from the disturbing scene at the beginning and a few jump scares toward the end. Regardless of that though, the house was so well done I have to rank this one of the best haunted house films ever made. The house rivals and even surpasses the environments I've traversed in nightmares and horror video games.

If you want to see perhaps the best haunted house ever filmed, this is the movie to watch. Not the best haunted house film, but the best haunted house contained in a film. Just don't expect much in the way of fright or thrills and remember that it takes around an hour to finally get to the haunt - sort of like waiting in line at a thrill park to walk through an awesome looking but not-so-scary environment.

7. Alexia (2013)

Director: Andrés Borghi | Stars: Sergio Berón, Paula Carruega, Pilar Boyle

While I've seen similar plots, this one did a good job of being original. It managed to come across as creepy before the creepiness even began. It was a decent short haunt film with makeup and effects that were better than what I've seen in a lot of feature length haunt films.

8. Along Came the Devil (2018)

TV-14 | 89 min | Drama, Horror, Thriller

Director: Jason DeVan | Stars: Jessica Barth, Sydney Sweeney, Matt Dallas, Bruce Davison

Not a great movie overall, but the haunt scenes are fantastically terrifying. They are the very thing that I've watched hundreds of haunt films in search of but rarely find. A scene near the beginning when two kids are in a bathroom in the middle of the night was literally jaw dropping and made the hairs on my arms stand on end. I had to go back and watch that part several times because I was so in awe of what I'd just seen and wanted more clarity on it. A good many other scenes were similar, putting a huge grin on my face (the scarier something is the bigger I grin.) This one is definitely worth a watch despite its overall sub-par quality.

Though it looked home-made and not very professional, the way this film was presented was delightful. It was like a fairy-tale with a terrifying ending, or a short campfire story brought to life on-screen.

There were quite a few decent creepy moments in this one, as well as some unique things I haven't seen done before. It had not just one but two completely different scenes of a haunted barn, and a wide variety of fantastic haunt environments in and around a wonderfully creepy old house. The story was decent with a nice pace and likeable characters and had two endings, one that ended the primary story and one that tied up the entire Annabelle story in a satisfyingly surprising way. Overall this is a very good haunt film, one of the better ones I've seen.

Votes: 10,562

This was one of the better ritual films I've seen. It wasn't scary at all but there were some wonderfully creepy scenes. The story was unique, fantastic, and suspenseful, sucking me into the plot from the first scene. The film was well cast with excellent acting. The effects were okay but there was an obvious lack of budget at times. The one major element that was lacking was a properly creepy soundtrack. The film had many opportunities to use sound to amplify the creepiness through the roof and give me cold chills down my spine, but it missed them all. Despite that and a few small plot holes, it was a great film all around. I highly recommend this one and will likely watch it again in the future.

31. The Apparition (2012)

PG-13 | 82 min | Horror, Thriller

18 Metascore

A couple is haunted by a supernatural presence that is unleashed during a college experiment.

Director: Todd Lincoln | Stars: Ashley Greene, Sebastian Stan, Tom Felton, Julianna Guill

Votes: 20,634 | Gross: $4.93M

The acting in this film was terrible, especially from the lead actress, and the story wasn't very well written. The way the apparition was brought into the world didn't make any sense, nor did the way they attempted to reverse the process. The location was well chosen and a lot of the set design was excellent, especially the way they made furniture and items going through walls and other parts of the house. The primary problem I had with the film was that it just wasn't scary or creepy in the slightest. It seemed like the filmmakers were definitely trying to make it scary and creepy but failed to pull it off, and I think a lot of that had to do with a poorly chosen score and poor sound effects, as well as poor directing and cinematography choices. The lighting, coloring and angles of the shots felt amateur in many cases, though they worked in others. The ending didn't make a lot of sense and despite the fact that how it ended should have been creepy it failed to be so, and again I think that had a lot to do with the sub-par musical score. It wasn't a bad film but I did find it to be boring and kept hoping it would end soon. There was one scene that induced an adrenaline rush from suspense as the female protagonist tried to escape from a room while the apparition was after her, and another very brief scene of the apparition behind a shower curtain, but that was about it for any kind of scare despite there being many more scenes that should have been scary or creepy had they been pulled off decently. Overall this film did not feel worth the watch to me so I can't recommend it.

32. Army of Darkness (1992)

R | 81 min | Comedy, Horror

59 Metascore

33. The Atoning (2017)

TV-MA | 89 min | Drama, Horror, Thriller

While they are haunted by ghostly apparitions, two parents try to protect their young son from a dark secret that could destroy their family.

Director: Michael Williams | Stars: Virginia Newcomb, Cannon Bosarge, Michael LaCour, Dorothy Weems

Votes: 988

This film would have been a lot better if the first hour of it had been condensed into five or ten minutes and the rest had been drawn out to fill out the majority of the film. While the first hour was an interesting concept for a haunt film, it failed to be scary or creepy in the slightest. Right around the hour mark however there were several very creepy scenes. Beyond that though the thing that made it creepy was revealed in its entirety far too early and that destroyed any creepiness in subsequent shots of it.

The lighting in the film was terrible. Almost every shot in the film was too bright for a haunt film and for some reason they went with blue light for night scenes and some of the shots had lighting that didn't feel natural in the slightest, so much so at times that it caused me to laugh at the ridiculousness of it. Had they gone with natural subdued lighting with lots of pitch black spots to induce fear of the unknown, and had there actually been a creepy musical score, this film could have been very creepy.

The location was excellent for a haunt film, and many of the things that were happening could have been nice and creepy had the music, sound effects and lighting been appropriate for a haunt film. I also found the story to be far too confusing for far too long, and due to the length it took for explanations for the confusion I had guessed what had happened long before they revealed it, meaning they waited too long to do the initial reveal of what was going on in the house.

Some of the acting was okay but a lot of it wasn't very good. The woman playing the psychic was a terrible actress and overacted to the point that it was ludicrous. I can't say much for the lead actors acting ability either, though the lead actress and the child did a fair job despite some of the inane situations they were forced to act in; the child making pancakes comes to mind as the top contender for inane situation.

Overall I found the film to be boring and sleep inducing despite having a decent unique concept for a haunt film. While there were some good creepy shots around the one hour mark the rest of the film failed to live up to those few shots, and the ending did not make a lot of sense. If you're looking for a scary or creepy haunt film this is not it and I would not recommend watching this film.

In under two minutes this film manages to be scarier than most feature length haunt films. In most cases I do not like when a haunt antagonist is fully revealed, even near the end, preferring them to stay as unknown or partially unknown entities - they're scarier that way. But this one is a major exception to that as it flat out shows it almost right away but the protagonist only suspects it's something sinister and doesn't actually see it and that makes it a nightmare come to life.

The cinematography of this film was excellent; rarely do haunt films do it this well. The lighting, use of shadows, dispersion of background elements (more than just depth of field - this was carefully crafted dispersion), and the coloring were all very well done. The musical score was also impressive, as well as the acting and the directing in general, and the shots of what I'm pretty sure was supposed to be Satan were genuinely creepy. What lacked however was the story which felt as though it was meandering and incomplete. Without really spoiling anything because there isn't much to spoil I can say that the story is basically "A girl is either possessed or schizophrenic, stabs people to death, then chops off their heads and offers them to Satan." It didn't really go anywhere and there didn't seem to be any sort of progression; the disturbed girl was disturbed. I was left in the end wanting more but there wasn't more. Was the girl possessed? Was she schizophrenic? Who knows. What was the point of watching this film? I'm still puzzling over those questions, especially that last one. I suppose if you just really want to see innocent people stabbed to death and their severed heads stuffed into a suitcase or placed on a boiler room floor this is the film to watch. But outside of the positive aspects of the film already mentioned, especially the cinematography and excellent use of shadow and background dispersion, this film is not worth watching.

In contrast to the previous three Chucky films, this one is not horror at all, just straight dark comedy. In most instances the murders performed by Chucky and his bride are so absurd they end up funny instead of scary. The film was more entertaining to me than its predecessors, perhaps because of the humor, but I doubt that I would watch it again.

The color and locations stand out the most in this short film. Wherever the location they filmed this in was I very much want to visit it. The story didn't make a lot of sense, nor did the antagonists, and the ending was bizarre and confusing. It felt more artistic than scary, but it was a beautiful piece of "haunted house art", which is a phrase I've never uttered before.

Overall a great movie. It was well cast with a great story and great characters. It started off as a drama and slowly turned into a supernatural horror that was a unique take on the demon-child sub-genre. It had several typical jump scares, a bit of creep, noteworthy environments and a good sense of dread. I found it lacking on the scare side of things as not once did it put a chill down my spine, but it was very enjoyable regardless. Near the end I remember saying out loud "Wow that's wild" with a big grin on my face. This one is definitely worth a watch.

Getting through this film was a lesson in patience. The digital effects were terrible. Disregarding the fact that they were late 90's effects, they were far below the quality of those in the original Casper film. The story felt forced and awkward, and despite having some well known actors the acting was at times laughable. I now understand why I did not hear of this films existence until 2016.

This film was not scary in the slightest but it was fairly humorous and I got a good number of laughs out of it. The set was visually pleasing and the plot wasn't all that bad. What I took away from this film - and this is just my own humorous take on it - is that the devil wanted a flashlight and he did a lot of work and kidnapping to finally get one. And who can blame him? He was living in the dark in Hell. He spent years tinkering away as a mason to build elaborate hallways and staircases in Hell and his torch must have burned out so he wanted one of those new-fangled electric LED flashlights the people of the 21st century had. In all seriousness though, this film wasn't that great. They had about two opportunities to have really good creepy scares in it and they blew them both; the first by not providing the proper creepy music, and the second by over-revealing the antagonist. The cast consisted of an X-Men Wolverine wannabe, the smartest mathematician in the world, a couple of kids that weren't that great at acting, and a woman who was far braver than any navy seal or marine would have been in the same situation. The plot centered around a house filled with supposed Hebrew runes and glyphs that seemed to be completely misunderstood and misused by the writer for the sake of the story, and a mathematical equation that made no sense. I will give the story credit, however, for the unique idea of using mathematics as a magical language. The people counting endlessly, though, were a bit annoying. Overall I can't recommend this film unless you just want some good laughs - but in order to get those laughs you have to make up your own story for why the characters are doing things.

For a movie that terrified me as a child and has kept me distancing myself from My Buddy dolls my whole life, this one doesn't hold up so well as horror when watched as an adult. I found myself laughing more often than feeling fear, though it did have several good jump scares and there was a nice creepy tone to much of the film. I enjoyed this film far more than its predecessor. There are a good number of times in the film when the tension is nice and there are quite a few minor scares. The cinematography was notably nice at times. Chucky comes across as far more scary than he did in the first film. This film also departs from the first films mystery-horror genre with a multitude of creative on-screen kills that bump this film into the slasher genre. However, regardless of the scares and scary imagery, this film came across as a comedy more than a horror - but not in a bad way.

This film is mediocre in comparison to the previous two. I never felt scared, not even a little. I laughed a little bit but not much. Overall it just wasn't that entertaining of a film.

This is one of the worst films I have ever watched. The writing was atrocious and the acting was awful. The woman that played the nun deserves a Golden Raspberry for some of the worst acting I have ever witnessed. Most of the characters were annoying, and the story was held together by broken threads. There was nothing scary about it, though the first time that someone was sacrificed to the demon was interesting to watch. However, seeing the same sacrifice and CGI effect repeatedly throughout the movie made it lose what little interest it originally had. At the end of the film they apparently tried to ramp up that process but succeeded only in showcasing really badly done CGI and bad writing. I can not stress enough how bad the writing was. The things the characters were saying at times reminded me of some of the least intelligent people I have met throughout the course of my life. If anything this film should be labeled a comedy, not a horror, but even as a comedy it fails. I do not recommend this film at all. Watching it is a waste of time.

This is one of the best haunt films ever made, second only to its predecessor. The tension and fear were fantastic. James Wan is the Alfred Hitchcock of haunt horror, it's just not done this well without him behind the helm.

The story was wonderful and the acting was great. The cinematography, set design, lighting, editing and sound however were phenomenal, working together like a perfectly crafted clockwork to create the scariest vibe possible, punctuated by moments of calm happy times or skepticism of the haunt to create a roller coaster effect of emotions.

As of the time I watched this film I have seen 275 haunt films, and rarely do they have much of a scare effect on me. Of the ones that have actually done a good job of making me scared, few have come anywhere near the effect that this one had (and, incidentally, almost all of those few are James Wan films.)

I got chills all over my body and it felt like something was in the room with me behind my seat so I was afraid to even turn my head to look into the dark corners behind me, though a couple of times I did have such a strong feeling that something was in the room with me that I actually did have to turn and look to confirm that nothing was there (it was a lamp shade.) I found myself subconsciously tucking my elbows in toward my body so something wouldn't grab them. At one point I even thought I felt something touch the back of my head.

That is the level of fear and paranoia I always hope to get from films in the haunt horror genre, and this film gave it to me in the extreme. Having just watched it I already want to watch it again. It was one hell of a fun scary ride.

Nowhere near as good as the previous two installments. This film lacks any spine tingling scenes. I never felt creeped-out. It is missing the signature terror-from-nothing scenes that James Wan so wonderfully delivers in his haunt films, likely because James Wan did not direct this installment. What the film does have going for it is excellent locations and set design. The creepy house and its exterior are fantastically good examples of haunt scenery. The interior scenes were also extremely well done, with brown/orange and sea-foam-green tones and claustrophobic wallpaper patterns that gave the film a beautifully nightmarish look. Overall the film didn't add anything of real substance to the series. It could be looked at as just another episode in the life of the Warrens, which resulted in yet another artifact finding a home in that special room of Ed's. Worth a watch if you want another Ed and Lorraine adventure with this wonderful pair of actors. However, if you're looking for a good, scary haunt film, look elsewhere.

This film had decent cinematography and it was well acted, but for the most part I found it to be slow and somewhat boring. The film follows a journalist investigating a murder by way of exorcism and functioned more like a detective film than a haunt film, but it had haunt elements and a lot of possession and exorcism scenes. The ending was a surprise and a lot more entertaining than most of the rest of the film, but unfortunately the film failed to be scary or creepy in any way. There were a few jump scares that failed to be very scary, and a few slamming doors and windows on multiple occasions that also failed to generate any kind of scare or creepy vibe. The most effect this film had on me in the way of scares was via the two or three cuts to shots of a car going down the road with a loud engine simply due to the loudness after a quiet moment. One one occasion there was a demon haunting the protagonist in her car and in a corn field and those had scary imagery but again failed to actually deliver on the scares or creepy vibe. By the time the film was about halfway over I began looking at the clock frequently and hoping the film would end soon so I could put my time to a more efficient use than watching a sub-par film. It wasn't a bad watch and it was a halfway decent possession / exorcism film, but I definitely would not recommend it if you're looking for something scary or creepy.

Unlike its predecessor which was pure horror, this one went back to being primarily comedy. It was a fun typical installment in the series with a few surprises that were more funny than thrilling. A quick sequence with a giant Chucky was the most thrilling thing about the film. Overall it was a lot of laughs and not a bad addition to the series, but I wish the horror overtones of the previous film had been maintained in this one.

This installment in the series abandoned the comedy and went back to being straight horror, though aside from a few jump scares and a few tense moments it wasn't that scary. What I found most entertaining was not the film itself but the fact that the female protagonist Chucky stalks is the real-life daughter of the actor who voices Chucky, and I watched it with that in mind. That aside, I did enjoy the film and felt it was a nice kickback to the first film.

This film might just take the prize for the worst film I've ever seen. Terrible directing, shot angles that made no sense, cutaways that made no sense, terrible cinematography for the most part, terrible acting, unnecessary nudity, terrible effects makeup - at one point a woman has blood streaming from her eyes in 6 nonsensical unnaturally perfect lines, then in the next shot the blood is gone, then it comes back again. A few shots and cuts were well put together but on the whole the cinematography, directing and editing were great examples of what not to do as a filmmaker.

The sound was terrible with lots of echoing, wind noise and overall poor quality. It had perhaps the most awful music score I've ever heard in a film, to the point that it was distracting from what was happening on the screen. The music was all over the place and so bad that about half way through the film I pulled out my ukulele to provide my own music for it and I think my improv music did it justice far more than what was in the films score.

When they arrive at their new house near the beginning the kids are complaining that it's like a poor house from a Dickens novel, yet as they're saying this there is a shot of a nice chandelier and beautiful wooden staircase; the house was extremely nice and had to be fairly expensive with what appeared to be lots of land, multiple out-buildings and a barn with multiple thousands of dollars worth of full-grown hogs in it. The daughter dressed like a hooker throughout most of the film and the mother was okay with it, then at one point the daughter puts on what I would say was a fairly modest outfit, a long skirt and shirt, and her brother says "Mum isn't actually letting you go out dressed like that is she?" I don't know what kind of backwards family they were supposed to be but...Wow. Furthermore, the father was in a coma yet functioned like a Ouija board, dishing out information to them as they needed to know it.

The writing was awful and at times nonsensical. The climax of the movie made absolutely no sense, with shots strung together to make things happen that should have been shown happening on screen; I'm still puzzled over what happened and why. There seemed to be 3 or 4 endings and the first one would have done nicely just to end the misery of having to continue watching anymore of the film. So many times I wanted to just stop watching but I was committed to finishing it.

I laughed pretty hard all the way through the climax at just how terrible it was; I can't imagine what the combo writer/director/producer was thinking when he made this. I've watched a lot of low budget films and generally they at least make some sort of sense. This wasn't even made to be laughed at like Evil Dead and Army of Darkness, it seems as though the filmmakers were trying to take it seriously and failed miserably. Do not watch this film unless you just really want to study how not to make a film.
