My favourite Directors

His style is always very clear and unruffeled, even if spectacular things happen on screen. All of his movies have a great fitting atmosphere for their content, and the lighting is always on point. really incredible is also the fact that all of his movies are made with as small of a budget and expenditure as possible and always look way more expensive as they actually are. He´s also one of the only Directors who write and score most of their movies themself.

The master of Suspense counts as the most influencial and intelligent filmmakers of all time. He knows exactly what to do and what not todo, but his movies never feel calculated but always have a sense of fantasy and fun, even in movies where it´ not visible the first time you watch them. He was a genius and should be a inspiration to everyone interested in the art of cinema.

Very underrated artist who is very good in making movies with fantastical elements which feel believable in the moment you see them. Also all of his movie are almost always technically flawless and a perfect example for making movies which feel alive. (For example the famous "Spielberg Oner" and putting special effects always in the same frame with the actors to interact.

Alex Proyas does only make movies once in three too five years, but he does some great work, his specialty are amazing visuals connected to beautiful scores and always with a neat idea behind it.

Has also the very rare strength (like Spielberg) to make his movie seem more alive. In this case through very real human interaction, people talk over each other, runall over ther place and talk about things which have no purpose for the plot, but that let all of his movies seem more real. Also always very nice cinematography and ensemble staging (like Carpenter).

Brian DePalma has any reason to be called "The new Hitchcock" because that says it all. But he has his own style, which is very sleek and technically also as perfect as it get´s.

David Fincher is a real genius in making dark and unsettling movies whith themes about the bad sites of humanity. His movies are always incredibley stylistic and he often does things with the camera where you can´t figure out if it´ actually real, or done in post-production. If you want to learn how to make intense and unsettling scenes, you have to look at his work, because his style on itself is simple but effective.

James Cameron succeeds with excess. his movies are always big scale movies with a clear message and incredible work put into every frame. He showed very early in his career things no one could have imagined at the time. I´m personally more of a fan of the pre-Titanic era, but that´s just my taste.

Has his completely own visual style which is very creative and always a lot of fun to watch, his movies always have a kind of dark comic-realism, like gloomy fairy tales. He´ as good with low-budget material as he is with big-budget productions.

Tim Burton (also) has a very unique gothic-style which is always filled with atmosphere and wonder. Most of his movies have protagonists who are outsiders and have to overcome some sort of obstacles thrwon into their way, which is probably how Brton sees himself. Also his very frequent working-relationship with composer Danny Elfman who´s scores perfectly underwrite Burton´s incredible style.

David Twohy is a very intriguing director who writes all of his movies himself and has a very unique style which is hard for me to explain. He has a very playful style and seems to try at least once in all of his films to push a scene so far to the limit that you have the feeling the screen explodes any moment now. He also has such unique ideas how to structure his scenes, or when to use creative ideas as effect as possible. It´s hard to say whithout pointing to special scene´s in his movies, so i just suggest you watch them and i think you will understand...

He is the directorial equivalent to a chameleon, because he never does the same thing twice (well except that a second Trainspotting movie´s supposed to come out this year) and all of his films are very experimental (in a very good way) and unique in what kind of genre he tackles. He tries to do something different every time he works on a project and this is very intriguing about his career.

Sex, violence, and much much blood...but also smart ideas and clever filmmaking. That´s how i would describe this Dutch gem of a director. I don´t know any of the work he did in his home country, but all he did in america is amazing, because all of that movies are very satirical and have something to say about the way, mostly the americans, live. He also uses sex and violence not only for shock, but always with a purpose for the story. Great work with special effects, and a visual style which often seems almost documentarion, mostly in his science fiction work, let´s all seem fairly believable but also slightly over the top.

A very technical filmmaker, he does always somethingincredible in this regard and has a very interesting visual style. All of his movie are also very dark and dramatic, but always with a little bit of hope underneath.

He´s a director i would call "movie-wizard" because his films are, on a technical level, always flawless and full of creative visual ideas that most people would never come up with. Like Spielberg and Donner, he has a great sense for how to stage actors in the frame, and how to let them interact with special effects so fliudly that all of his movies seem alive. But there are times when he tends to up the anti and showes us things that are impossible to explain, because you have to see them to beleive...

John McTiernan is most known for his great action classics, but not just because of bullets and explosions, but because he´s a great storyteller. Because this is what he does, he uses the camera to tell stories not just to get a good look at guns and muscles. If you look close at all of his films, they are all strong in the way the story unfolds and that´s most of the reason they work so well.

This guy from russia is just crazy...crazy imaginative! All of his films are set in a fairly rel environment, which get´s bombarded with over-the-top-fantasy stuff, so that you feel the impact of the clash even harder. He has a very playful and immense creative visual style and always works very well with sound. He´s also a big fan of slow-motion and always does great stuff with that gimmick, which is often overused by other directors.

Once called "The new Spielberg" but i always thought he would be more like the "new Brian dePalma who was the new Hitchcock" to say the least. He has similar strengths, mostly in his early work, because he got hit and miss afterwards, but even his weaker efforts have always a great sense of atmosphere and visuals which are different and beautiful to look at. Also his use of color in his movies is very strong and often overlooked.

James Mangold is very good in directing actors, it makes no difference for him if the movie is action oriented, a drama, or a comedy. His movies always flow very lightly, so that you can watch them other and other again.

I like Martin Scorsese´s "little" films more than his big Mafia-epics an stuff, but that´s my personal taste, i still think that Goodfellas is a very well made movie on a technical level. That goes, in fact, for all of his movies, they are technically flawless and have more or less interesting themes.

This guy is mad, but in a very noble sense of the word. His movies are very creative and different, but also elegant and smart. Elegant because they look like arthouse movies even if we talk about something like The fifth Element, or Lucy, which are big-budget-blockbuster-movies. The fifth Element also was the most successful european movie at the time, which made him very famous and opened a gate for other directors to try out new ideas.

He also produced many france action movies which are mostly hit and miss, but helped to form the careers of such directors like Louis Letterier, or Pierre Morel for example.

He´s one of the best modern action directors out there, and no one seems to notice that. At first it seems like he does all that stuff most action directors do, fast cuts, some close ups, moving the camera with the actors, and other things that are done to cover up the lack of experience, BUT he does it perfectly and with such an amazing sense for when to cut, or when to do what shot, it´s a delight.

But also quiet scenes are no problem for this guy, everything hits the right note at the right time, and even if his projects seem more like commissioned work, he makes them his own.

A fairly underrated director.

This guy knows how to direct good thrillers. His movies always have a interesting idea, or setting, and characters you care for. He´s also very effective in staging room, you get the feeling like you are in tghe same room or situation as the protagonist.
