If we listen to each other’s heart, we’ll find we love A Goofy Movie as cinematic art!
Okay, that isn’t how the lyrics to the now famous “I 2 I” song first heard in 1995’s A Goofy Movie go but they reflect how the world at large views the film these days. Thanks to a generation of kids watching the movie over and over on VHS, endless cosplays of rock star Powerline, and the irresistible god-tier quality of Tevin Campbell’s musical contributions, A Goofy Movie is more beloved today than it’s ever been.
But with so many repeated viewings little questions start to appear in the mind of fans. Why didn’t the movie, a sort of sequel to the Goof Troop TV series, include the other members of antagonist Pete’s family, Peg and Pistol? How in the hell did Goofy and Max get to...

If you plan to attend Usher's "My Way" Las Vegas residency, you'll want to arrive early because you don't want to miss the preshow dance party courtesy of his unmatched fans. As I walked into the Park MGM arena for the show I was attending in late June, my ears were greeted with classic R&b and hip-hop songs like Tevin Campbell's "Can We Talk" and Miguel's "Adorn You" as a DJ encouraged us to stand, dance, and sing along with the rest of the audience. Usher's dancers even came out and interacted with the audience, inviting some lucky attendees to dance with them on stage. The vibes felt more like a house party with all of my best friends than a concert surrounded by strangers. So much so that I didn't even realize the show was starting.

Babyface squeezed several decades worth of hits and classics into his career-spanning set on the latest installment of NPR’s Tiny Desk Concert series. Babyface opened his set with a pair of early gems: 1987’s “Two Occasions,” a song he co-wrote and co-produced for his R&b outfit the Deele, followed by 1990’s “Whip Appeal,” the hit second single from his second album,...

American Idol did not *ahem* go easy on viewers during the first half of this season’s Final Judgment on Sunday, ending on yet another cliffhanger.
With 11 contestants already sent through to the Top 24 ahead of them, Paige Anne and Megan Danielle were called before the judges to learn their fates. But even after their Showstopper performances — Anne managed to slay Sia’s “California Dreamin'” from the safety of her hotel room, while Danielle wowed with a countrified take on Lady Gaga’s “Always Remember Us This Way” — the judges still couldn’t decide between them.

Debating which Disney animated film reigns supreme as the greatest of all time is a fool's errand, but if I was given a vote, I'd throw some love toward "A Goofy Movie." While it's not about a singing princess making her dreams come true or "Hamlet" but with lions, "A Goofy Movie" is a silly, heartwarming road-trip movie about generational differences and coming-of-age in a single-parent household. As a youngster, I very much saw myself in Max Goof (Jason Marsden), a rebellious teen constantly embarrassed by his well-meaning father and hiding his adolescent insecurity by performing. I distinctly remember sharing the second-hand embarrassment during the pair's excursion to Lester's Possum Park, imagining how I too would cringe out of my skin if my parents were that excited about broken, animatronic nightmare possums.
As I grew older, my perspective shifted. Re-watching "A Goofy Movie" as an adult, I couldn't help myself from immediately siding with Goofy.

FX's "Atlanta" is known for throwing viewers a curveball or two, but the show's reputation for unpredictable twists is why many will miss it after it concludes its final season this fall. Over the course of four seasons, the critically acclaimed series has turned itself into must-see TV for its bold innovation and sharp comedy, but the show's surprise guest appearances every now and then have also become a fan-favorite trend.
Though some episodes of "Atlanta" have faked viewers out with teases of appearances from folks like D'Angelo and Tupac and even made big moments out of its signature characters like Donald Glover's Teddy Perkins, the actual stars who have been seen in the series are always a real treat. Even those who were originally slated to guest-star on "Atlanta" have been a surprise for viewers.

Issa Rae is living the dream. The "Insecure" star was serenaded by Usher during his Las Vegas residency show at Park MGM on Oct. 15, and watching the performance is guaranteed to make you blush.
In a video Usher posted on Instagram, the singer croons his hit 2004 track "Superstar" to Rae - quite the apt song choice for the Golden Globe-nominated actor and producer - as she beams from ear to ear, holds his hands, and dances along. Rae somehow manages to remain calm, cool, and collected the whole time, despite the fact that she has a front-row seat to Usher's angelic vocals and suave moves. The clip ends just as he pulls her onto the stage steps for even more serenading.

It's one of the tragic moments of adulthood. You sit down to watch a film you idolized in your childhood — and haven't seen in just as long — only to discover a far less magical or even entertaining experience. Luckily, that's absolutely not the case with the 1995 Disney classic "A Goofy Movie," which I recently treated myself to a rewatch of. I am happy to report that the movie is still as heartwarming and hilarious as I remember it. From the big laughs of the Bigfoot scene to the teary eyes I still get when Max and Goofy finally reconcile.
But from the very beginning, Disney had less than stellar expectations for "A Goofy Movie" compared to bigger features like "The Lion King" or "Pocahontas." In fact, it wasn't even developed by Walt Disney Animation Studios (then called Walt Disney Feature Animation) but rather by a subdivision called Disneytoon Studios that...

Heath will also now oversee the financial health and management of the independent production studio.

Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you have not watched the fourth and final season of “Dear White People,” streaming now on Netflix.
When Justin Simien was adapting his 2014 satirical film “Dear White People” into a half-hour television series, he created a bible for the show that included a reference to Donald Trump becoming president. And then Trump did just that. When Simien was conceptualizing the fourth and final season of the Netflix comedy, he wrote in a fictional virus. And then Covid-19 hit.
At that point, he and co-showrunner Jaclyn Moore had already worked out plans for a future storyline in addition to the main characters’ senior year at Winchester University playing out in the final run of episodes. The future story is set 15 years later in order to see the characters finally attempting to resolve some things between them, while the senior year story follows them as they...

Carl “Chucky” Thompson, a producer and multi-instrumentalist whose slick samples of Seventies and Eighties soul underpinned some of the most popular R&b and hip-hop tracks of the Nineties, died on Monday at age 53, his rep confirmed to Rolling Stone. A cause of death was not immediately available.
In the Nineties, mainstream hip-hop started to move away from building tracks on obscure samples, choosing instead to craft songs around loops of well-known refrains and bass-lines from earlier eras. P. Diddy and his crew of producers — a group known as the...

At age 12, Tevin Campbell — freshly signed to Warner on the strength of a voice that was already drawing comparisons to Michael Jackson — hopped on a call with Prince. “I remember riding in the limo and talking to him over the phone,” Campbell says. “I knew who Prince was, of course, but at the time, I had a really, really, really high voice, so I didn’t pay attention to a lot of male artists — I couldn’t sing male artists’ songs. Last week on “The Voice,” the knockout rounds commenced with two artists getting sent home: Casmè for Team John Legend and Ryan Berg for Team Gwen Stefani. That left 26 artists still in the running to win the Season 19 championship, with many more about to be eliminated during Monday’s two-hour episode. Gwen was the only coach to use her last save of the season (on country singer Ben Allen), which meant John, Kelly Clarkson and Blake Shelton still had the power to swoop in and save an at-risk contestant before the all-important live shows. How did Night 2 of the knockouts play out, and what advice did mega mentor Usher give to the remaining artists?

When Nelson George sat down to write about the state of R&b for The Village Voice in the late Eighties, two super-producers were frequently on his mind: Teddy Riley, who helped invent a vicious new fusion called New Jack Swing in New York City, and his rival Babyface, a melodic mastermind based at the time in Los Angeles (but about to decamp to Atlanta).
George was writing from New York, and he was initially high on Riley, a hometown hero, but lukewarm on Babyface’s “computer-chip production.” In 1989, however,...

Get ready to start smiling! It's been 25 years since Disney released A Goofy Movie on April 7, 1995, spinning off the classic anthropomorphic dog Goofy and his teenage son Max Goof from their TV series Goof Troop into a beloved animated film all their own. And if you're a fan of the movie, you know that not only is it a heartfelt exploration of a fraught father-son relationship, but it's got some killer tunes courtesy of Powerline, the famous pop star voiced by Tevin Campbell who Max and all his friends in the film are obsessed with. The two tracks written for the fictional pop star have become nearly as beloved as the movie itself. In honor of the film's anniversary, and with everything that's...

Refresh for updates GLAAD has reached out to Empire star Jussie Smollett following what Chicago police are describing as a possible hate crime in which the black, openly gay actor was beaten outside a restaurant by two men who reportedly shouted racist and homophobic epithets.
“GLAAD reached out to Fox and Jussie’s team today to offer assistance as well as support for him,” GLAAD said in a statement. “Jussie is a true champion for Lgbtq people and is beloved by the community and allies around the world.”
The attackers reportedly punched Smollett before pouring an unknown chemical substance over him. At some point during the attack, one of the suspects wrapped a rope around Smollett’s neck before fleeing the scene. Early and unconfirmed press reports said the attackers shouted pro-Maga statements and wore Maga hats or ski masks. The police statement did not confirm or address those details.

[CUSTOM_PLAYER_BRIGHTCOVE "4855983440001"] Prince was so passionate about music, he literally lived at the studio. Paisley Park is the $10 million studio compound in Chanhassen, Minnesota, where the late singer also resided after it was completed in 1988. The legendary was a local boy from Minnesota, who despite all his success, ultimately never left his home state. Last year, Perry talked about wanting to be a dad during an interview on Steve Harvey, saying, "I know I would be a great father. I don't want to work this hard. I don't want to have all of this and not leave it to my children."
At that time, Perry felt that fatherhood was best left on the backburner, due to his schedule.

Let’s be honest, puberty isn’t kind to any of us. Weird things happen to chins, hair gets fuzzy, voices get squeaky and deepen (especially awkward if you’re a girl). But it’s normal! As non-celebrity civilians, we learn to develop stellar personalities to distract from the acne and move on with our lives. Not so easy for child stars. For kids and teens whose careers depend on their adorability factor — who can support their entire family for a year with their dimples — losing their cutie-pie good looks can be disastrous. Look at The Brady Bunch’s Susan Olsen. As Cindy Brady, the lisping daughter with the boing-boing blonde curls, she was a star. But sadly, she grew up to look like a tough-but-lovable bartender in a biker-themed pub in San Fran. Or Tevin Campbell, who was prom-date-perfect as a tween/teen R&B hottie.

The Voice‘s Season 3 premiere began and ended with almost unbearable suspense.
The show-opening performance of the Rolling Stones’ “Start Me Up” by coaches Blake Shelton, Cee Lo Green, Adam Levine, and Christina Aguilera found the latter two vocalists side-by-side and sharing a microphone atop a rapidly rising platform. Would one of the (former?) bitter rivals snap, and push the other to a disfiguring free-fall?
And the evening’s final contestant, Queens native Trevin Hunte, was encouraged by the judges to give up the name of the eighth-grade teacher who tried to quash his singing aspirations and told him he’d never amount to anything.

Every once in a while a film comes along which is able to transcend cultural, social and racial boundaries and present a relatable and poignant tale which is immediately accessible to a wide spectrum of audiences. One such film is the South Central La-set, coming-of-tale tale, Boyz N the Hood. Having recently celebrated the twenty year mark since its initial cinema release (and now out on Blu-ray), it’s a film which touched the hearts of many, due to its moving and sometimes unflinching look at the lives of a group of teenage kids living in a constant, gang-inspired suburban war zone.
The debut film of director John Singleton (who, at the ripe old age of 23, showed remarkable maturity and a solid gasp of human nature for his youthful years) it’s the tale of the daily struggles of a teenager named Tré Styles (alongside best friend and neighbour from across the street,...

Director John Singleton’s acclaimed 1991 crime drama Boyz N the Hood is making its way to high-definition Blu-ray on July 19. Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will bring out the film in a 20th Anniversary Edition priced at $19.95.
Nominated for two Academy Awards, the movie tells the story of three friends growing up on the streets of Los Angeles’ South Central. Ice Cube (Lottery Ticket) stars as Doughboy, an unambitious drug dealer; Morris Chestnut (TV’s V) as his brother Ricky, a college-bound teenage father; and Cuba Gooding Jr. (The Hit List) as Ricky’s best friend Tre, who aspires to get out of the Hood. Laurence Fishburne (Armored) plays Gooding Jr.’s strong father. Of course, as they try to get out, a tragedy pulls them back in and violence seems like the only answer.
The Oscars Boyz N the Hood was nominated for were Best Director and Best Original Screenplay,...

'Idol' expert Jim Cantiello offers up suggestions for the top eight as they tackle songs of the cinema.

"American Idol" top 8
Photo: Fox
"American Idol" ended last week in a swirl of shock, anger and boo- hooing as Pia Toscano was sent home and Ryan Seacrest was reduced to begging viewers: "We need you! Stay with us this season!"
Where does the show go from here? Well, "Idol" will be relying on the bright lights of Hollywood to wash out memories of arguably the most shocking elimination in its history, as the remaining eight singers take on songs of the cinema. That's a familiar theme in "Idol" land, one last seen just last year (recall how Crystal Bowersox gave a killer country-rock makeover to Kenny Loggins' "I'm Alright"), but which stretches back all the way to season two.
What direction should the contestants take?...

A blend of soul, rock and funk defines the sound of Aj Sarcione.s voice. Aj Sarcione, a newcomer on the music scene, combines bluesy baritone notes to a full tenor and falsetto range that reminds you of Prince, Joss Stone and Tevin Campbell. A veteran of MTV behind the scenes, Aj has struck out on his own in front of the camera and on stage. His voice even caught the ear of Whitney Houston, who asked him to sing at The Wang Center in Boston during her 'My Love is Your Love' tour. A short while later, pop artist Mya Harrison handed over her microphone while in concert after hearing Aj sing, asking him to perform her...

One of the fun things about TV shows is you never know who will pop up as a guest star. And sometimes remarkable guest star roles can even lead to Emmys.
But what happened to the notable black guest stars of yonder? You know, back when there were hit TV shows starring a black cast.
Fresh Prince of Bel-Air gave us Stacey Dash, Tevin Campbell, Nia Long and the couple from The Jeffersons.
The Cosby Show gave us several guest stars including Debbie Allen, Angela Bassett, Naomi Campbell and Stevie Wonder.
A Different World gave us Lena Horne, Tupac Shakur and Kriss Kross.
Family Matters gave us Shanice and Johnny Gill.
And now??? What TV show is giving us black guest stars? I can’t think of one show. Lincoln Heights had the possibility but ABC Family canceled it and unfortunately the show never caught on like the aforementioned programs.

Kon and Quincy Jones tap into 'abstract' feelings for single from Jones' covers album.

Akon and Quincy Jones love to crack jokes on each other. On the set of the video for the remake of "Strawberry Letter 23," Kon started the jesting by claiming he'd introduced Jones to a plethora of pretty women.
"You know that's not true," the legendary producer said, prompting a chuckle from Akon. Then, when Kon called the legendary producer "Uncle Q," Jones insisted that the two men were the same age.
Akon is one of many stars to have contributed to the LP Q: Soul Bossa Nostra, which is due sometime this spring or summer. The collection of performers and producers will deliver renditions of some of Jones' greatest hits.
"Timbaland brought the idea," Jones told MTV News of the project. "Three or four years ago,...

Michael Lynche caught a big break this week when the "American Idol" judges used their second-ever save to keep him in the competition. This got us thinking about other reality-show second chances, including Speidi on "I'm a Celebrity ... Get Me Out of Here!" and Chris March from "Project Runway," but my personal favorite was left out. While Matt Giraud received the inaugural judges' save last year, he wasn't the first comeback kid on "Idol."
No, that title belongs to Nikko Smith, the season four R&B crooner who was voted off only to be invited back to the competition when Mario Vazquez made the brilliant decision to pursue bigger opportunities and opt out of "Idol." (How's that working out, Mario?) Smith was one of four contestants eliminated from the top 16, but he ended up squeezing four extra weeks out of the competition, making it to the top...
